Digital Citizenship is a term to refer to the skills a person needs in order to understand and participate effectively in a digital world. Like any skills, these are learnt over a period of time.

Teachers and Digital CitizenshipAs teachers, we have a professional obligation to develop and maintain relationships - this includes any of our online relationships. We need to think about digital citizenship in terms of ourselves as professionals, as well as the children we teach.
Online ProfileBeing a digital citizen means being aware of what you say and do online, and what others comment or say about you online. This is particularly important when you are in the teaching profession. Your online profile, comments, blogs etc are known as a ‘digital footprint’.

Social Media
Social media are the tools that allow us to connect, communicate, collaborate and share information online. Some example of social media use include:
1. Connecting with our own families and friends via Facebook2. Sharing photos via flickr 3. Connecting with fellow educators in online communities 4.Sharing children’s learning with families via their Storypark ePortfolio
There are many different purposes for connecting online and many different ways of connecting.

Passcode Lock:A passcode lock requires that a passcode is entered before access can be gained to the device. All iPads should be set with a passcode lock that is known by all teachers. By ensuring that this is turned on, access to the devices is prevented unless a teacher enters the passcode.
If the Erase Data option is turned on, this will mean that should the passcode be entered incorrectly 10 times, then all data will be erased. This is a good safety measure in-case the iPad is stolen as children’s photos and data will be deleted. However centres will need to decided how practical this is for centre use if young children try to guess the passcode.
PrivacySelect the Privacy option under Settings to see what applications are using your location. If location settings are on and photos have access, then the GPS coordinates are ‘attached’ to the photo which shows the location the photo has been taken. Ideally, location settings should be switched off in early childhood settings.
RestrictionsThis provides some control over material that can be accessed however it is not 100% reliable.

You can also only permit certain websites to be accessed. To do this, select Websites from under Allowed Content, select Specific Websites Only and type in the website you want to access. By doing this, you minimise the risk of children accidentally stumbling across inappropriate material.
Updates Update your apps regularly; having the latest versions of your apps is important for a variety of reasons:! Security: Updates often fix security vulnerabilities in older versions
! Stability: Updates also fix other, non-security-related bugs. For example, a new version could solve crashes you may be experiencing or make a feature work properly.
! Features: Major new versions of apps generally add new features you can take advantage of.! Performance: New versions can also increase the software’s performance
Safe SearchingThe web is an excellent place for finding resources to support children’s learning. Thinking about ‘search terms’ when googling or looking for information is important to ensure that the most relevant, and appropriate, information is located. You can do this by selecting two or three key phrases related to the search term e.g. crabs, animal, sea will locate information relating to the sea animal.
