ABOUT THE PROGRAM The summer program, now in its 13th year, features lectures by Program Director Dr. Nancy J.

Walker and the faculty of the George Washington University, as well as by guest speakers from

a wide variety of organizations. This summer offers the particularly exciting opportunity for

participants to analyze policies and issues that are the core of the U.S. presidential campaigns.

Participants will have access to the libraries at the George Washington University, the National

Security Archive, the Library of Congress, and other research libraries in Washington, DC.

In addition to attending lectures, all participants work on group projects and write a policy

memorandum on a U.S. foreign policy issue of their choice. After the two-week program

is completed, participants write a substantive research paper on U.S. foreign policy. Upon

successful completion of the program, participants earn academic credit from the George

Washington University.

“ Not only did I end up coming to GW for grad school following the program, but the networking, education, and experience gained helped me launch my career and left a lasting impression with me. I know that I would not be where I am in DC without doing this program.”

—Jennifer Lowry, UC Santa Barbara, 2013

“ There is a need for long-term policy planning in American foreign policy. It is no accident that the policy planning staff at the State Department was created in 1947. It’s part of one of the structural changes that allowed the U.S. to be more engaged internationally. That as we committed to NATO, the United Nations, and other institutions after the end of the Second World War, we were going to be long-term players in the international community.”

— Esther Brimmer, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor of International Affairs, GW; Former Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, U.S. Department of State (2009–13)

“The program was an enriching experience, as I gained important insights into the decision-making processes in Washington. The sessions broadened my perspectives, cleared some doubts, and inspired more questions!”

-Juhi Ajuha, Nanyang Technological University, 2015

“It was an unexpected and extraordinary pleasure to take this intensive summer program. I made new friends from all over the world, including Egypt, the USA, and India, and learned new perspectives of foreign policy through them. It was really an amazingly diverse program, both the students and the content covered.”

-Nouhad Awwad, American University in Cairo, 2014
