“How’s your band going? How’s Snow Patrol?” says Vince. He looks a little stoned but then he always has that lovely blissness to him so I can’t be sure. His lilting Scots brogue and delicate clumsiness always puts me at ease. His memory though seems to invent it’s own story and Vince, being at the behest of his own mind, says it like he means it. So when he says, “How’s Snow Patrol” I’m only a little confused. I’m not surprised anyway. “Er Vince mate we’re called Polar Bear.” “Oh” he says as if it won’t stop him from always thinking of us in his own way. And that was the start of it. For real. Vince had his way. I didn’t want him to have to remember a whole other two words. It’s best for everyone this way. Snow Patrol then.

* Thompson’s Garage, Belfast, 1997, or thereabouts. We’d finished another painful set of me strumming ineptly on my 50 quid guitar/piece of shit and staring into the ground so intently it may have looked to the casual observer (and there weren’t many) that I was actually trying to bore my way into the basement to escape. In the early days I did not smile. I did not move. I did not have fun up there. I was terrified. My face was a ball of fire. Embarrassed by my loudness. Our loudness I should say because I was embarrassed enough for all of us. However, the main band following us (the incredible Disraeli Gears also featuring Paul Archer, brother to Iain and friend forever) included a drummer that hit the snare as if he was mad at it. Jonny Quinn he called himself when we spoke later. I’d go from that room to the rest of the world with the man. From then to now and far beyond I dare to hope. The calm yin to my wild yang. There has to be both or there is nothing.

* Drouthy Neebors (it means thirsty friends in Gaelic). Downstairs. Nightshift. I worked for a long time in the pub across the road from my house in Dundee to supplement my student loan, which was generally spent on music and things to drink whilst listening to music. I needed a job. I got one there. Behind the bar instead of in front of it. Less damage could be done. You’d think. Anyway. I’d met a guy a few weeks before. A DJ of some repute in Dundee. Let’s call him Nick Decosemo because that is his name. Him and his DJ partner were minor legends in the town and I was excited to meet his other half. This night. This night downstairs in that stupid pub I ended up being fired from (Another story. A good story too) in walks the legend himself. He asks for a pint and I duly get him one, for twas my job. Upon delivery of said pint I say “Hello Tom? Tom Simpson? I’m a friend of Nick’s.” With this Tom raises his eyebrows as if to say “Yeah? And?” and he takes a seat in the corner with his pals. Who would know it was to be the start of a great love story?

We laugh about it now. To be honest most of what we do is wrapped in laughter and Tom sparks it more than most. Also to have learned the piano in the time he did is nothing short of a miracle.

* Kidnapped. We loved him so much we stole him. Him with his guitar low-slung and hung on him like his hero Strummer. He wears it higher now. At his own height for the man he’s become to plant his feet and surprise us all with a wailing wall of crushing noise or a delicate tapped wine glass of a note that finds its way to a warmth-trigger in the depths of you. From kidnap to now though it’s been a journey alright. Before Nathan came along we struggled like hell to keep our heads above the water. When he joined something changed. He probably doesn’t realise it himself but he helped immeasurably galvanise this band of ricocheting ideas and has an attention to detail I never could find in myself that helped solve the puzzle of what we were and what we wanted from music and for music. He’s way too handsome though.

* “There’s a guy hanging upside down from the ceiling playing the guitar!” My mate Fraser had run down the King Tuts stairs to tell me this as I played pool. “Bullshit!” I said but thought better than to not believe Fraser (a man not prone to bullshitting) so off I followed him upstairs. Sure enough, there he hung playing a pretty complicated guitar solo swinging the wrong way up (whatever your profession upside down is pretty much always the wrong way up) from a lighting fixture in the very low King Tuts roof. When I say very low I’m not taking away from this crazy guitarists feat of acrobatics, he would still mess his face up pretty bad if he fell, but I have nearly knocked myself out a few times jumping up and down on that stage. Still swinging he was though and I, like many of the pretty rammed Tuts punters, waited to see what happened next. The dismount when it came passed without incident but the madness continued unabated. Jumping off amps and speakers (as it turned out later actually hurting himself quite badly on a few occasions but soldiering on heroically nonetheless) until a frantic end of blurring arms and legs I thought would result in the formation of a black hole. The band was Terra Diablo and the man was of course Paul ‘Pablo’ Wilson. Then there were five.

* There’s a thrum about the place. The cold Scottish winter night outside has given the room and the fifty good people in it that particular extra winter warmth only a formidable Celtic evening can. More people shudder through the front door shaking out the cold and letting the friendly

hugs and first sip of whiskey thaw the blood back to liquid in their veins. There is a radio on but right now no one pays it much mind. Number twenty something in the charts it seems and a record is played that is talked and over, not out of rudeness but because we are all here for a reason. For the last decade the band has lived in the shadows. Very few records sold. Sleeping in vans and on floors. Tasting the ego-pummelling bitter pill of being dropped. Tonight, maybe this whole last month, something has changed. Over the next hour random words and songs are heard from the defiant radio begging to be heard until we comply. “This week’s highest new entry in at number five Snow Patrol with Run.” There is cheering and hugging and some tears. The last ten years seem to disappear. There is only now with these wonderful friends that stuck by us through it all. There is only now, oh and the future.

* In that future we are seeing the world. Thanks to all of you that is.

* To everyone who stuck with us through all this, thank you. It was and still is a blast. Without you all there is only shouting into the void. So much love. Gary. x
