Dr Anja Ulbrich, A.G. Leventis curatorof Cypriot Antiquities in theAshmolean Museum, Oxford, recentlydelivered a lecture on Cyprus, Island ofAphrodite: Her images, cult andsanctuaries during the era of the citykingdoms (Archaic and ClassicalPeriods) at Senate House, University ofLondon.

The lecture was organised by theFriends of the British School at Athens, chaired by the archaeologist GeraldCadogan, and attended by Mr A. P.Leventis, the director of the A.G.Leventis Foundation, Dr AchilleasHadjikyriacou, the cultural counsellorof the Cyprus High Commission, DorosPartassides, representative of CyprusTelevision, and a mixed audience ofarchaeologists, classicists and thepublic.

The starting point of the intriguing, richly illustrated lecture was Greekliterature, mostly Homer and Hesiod, which vaguely portrays Aphrodite, frequently called “Kypris” or “Lady ofCyprus” (potnia Kyprou in Greek), asthe most important deity on the islandwith universal powers, facets andfunctions in the Cypriot society andreligion during the age of the citykingdoms (ca. 750310 BC).

Dr Ulbrich went on to explore thesignificance and various functions ofthe goddess by analysing thearchaeological evidence from and forher sanctuaries in Cyprus proper. The

first part of the lecture focused on theimagery of the votive figures in stone andterracotta from her sanctuaries, particularly those portraying her orreferring to Cypriot Aphrodite, not calledAphrodite in Cypriot dedicatoryinscriptions before the time of Alexanderthe Great. A second part investigated thedistribution and topography of her cultsites in Cyprus and in the urban centresand territories of the island’s 12autonomous citykingdoms.

Through the period under review, variousdifferent types of images of or referring toCypriot Aphrodite were dedicated asvotive figures to the goddess. They reflectboth, her various aspects and functions aswell as the multicultural nature ofCypriot society at the time. Thus,

the imagetypes of a naked female, sometimes supporting her breasts or of apregnant enthroned woman or goddess, characterized Kypris as goddess of sex, love and fertility. They were introducedfrom Phoenicia in the 7th or 5th centuryBC respectively, probably throughPhoenicians in the Phoenician citykingdom of Kition in Cyprus.

A survey of the distribution of sanctuariesof the goddess in Cyprus, illustrated withvarious maps, showed that she was thedominant deity within the urban centresof all citykingdoms as well as in townsin the territories. There she wasworshipped in several sanctuaries atgeographically prominent sites, such ason top of an acropolis, in a palace or near

the citygates, either in all her variousaspects mentioned above, or differentaspects of her were dominant at differenturban cult places. The further away hersanctuaries lay from a city or largertown, the more her aspect of female andvegetal fertility and as a hunting goddessbecame prominent in the images of hervotivefigurines.

Commenting on the lecture, Dr AchilleasHadjikyriacou, the Cultural Counsellorof the Cyprus High Commission, highlighted the fact that Dr Ulbrich’sresearch allowed the audience toappreciate the complex social, cultural, religious and historical connotations ofthe “Great Goddess of Cyprus”.

As he stated: “Cyprus is widely knownas the Island of Aphrodite, but there isstill a lot to learn from the ongoingarchaeological research regarding theimportance of the Goddess as at a crosspoint of ancient civilisations, culturesand histories. Dr Ulbrich, a leadingscholar in this field, has providedoriginal insights into the presence ofAphrodite in the Iisland during theArchaic and Classical periods while atthe same time she convincinglyexplored exploring the change in theGoddess’ physical representations andreligious symbolisms across time andplace.”
