In the 2017 Flower Year, visitors to Mainau Island can discover exciting mathematical connections and numerical phenomena in nature during a round tour of the botanical treasures we have in different places in the gardens. Who would have thought that the florets of Romanesco broccoli and the disc florets at the centre of a sunflower are structured in accordance with a very specific numerical order, known as the Fibonacci sequence? On this island of Lake Constance with its colourful flower beds and its Mediterranean- style flair, the visitor can find plenty of space for relaxation and enjoyment. If your head is spinning from attempting to square the botanical circle with our motto for the year (island x palm tree)2, you can, of course, take things easy and completely relax, for instance as you look across the azure blue waters of Lake Constance and up to the summits of the Alps in the far distance.

Our father Lennart Count Bernadotte was the son of Prince William of Sweden and of Maria Pawlowna, Grand Duchess of Russia. He further developed the former castle park of his great-grandfather, Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, making it a paradise of flowers and plants and opening it to the public. Today, we are the fifth generation of our family to guide the island’s destiny and we hope to continually inspire afresh an enjoyment of nature in our visitors from all over the world. MiscellaneousWheelchairs and electric mobility scootersWheelchairs are available for hire free of charge at the entrance on the mainland and at the harbour entrance, in particular for visitors with reduced mobility or for elderly guests. You can hire electric mobility scooters (at € 15.00/3 hours, with a surcharge of € 1.00 for each additional hour). Where does rubbish go? Correct sorting and disposal of rubbish is part of the concept of Mainau Island. We have put up several rubbish recycling collection points for this purpose; one of those is situated at the coach park. We kindly ask you first to separate the rubbish collected in the coach and then to dispose of it at the recycling collection point. Moreover, you help to support our efforts by informing your travel passengers about Mainau’s policy of separating rubbish. Thank you very much!

Island busDuring the Mainau Flower Year from 24 March to 22 October 2017, our island bus provides a shuttle service between the entrance on the mainland and the centre of the island (car park at the Schwedenschenke restaurant) every 15 minutes from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 2.00 to 6.00 p.m. You can obtain the precise timetable at our service centre. Price: € 1.50 per person per ride

Coach driver’s meal With a reservation in one of our restaurants the bus driver receives the pre-ordered menu free of charge.This offer is valid in addition to the already granted free meals for groups in our restaurants.

A tranquil time of year begins on Mainau when the last blossoms fade and the flower beds are cleared in preparation for a short winter sleep. Coots and other waterfowl flock to the bay and the trees are covered in shimmering hoarfrost.

Now’s the time for taking peaceful strolls through the snow-covered landscape. If you’re seeking somewhere warmer, then visit one of Germany’s largest butterfly houses and see the colourful butterflies.

The tropical climate here is 26° C with around 80 % humidity both day and night.

Combine your visit to Mainau Island with a stay in Constance. Niederburg, the oldest part of Constance, has pretty narrow streets just waiting to be discovered. They are lit by bright stars showing the way.

The Christmas market at the lake stretches from the historic inner city down to the harbour from the end of November to just before Christmas Eve.

Spring Exhibition “Spring’s Awakening” | From the beginning of March to mid-MayThe Spring sales exhibition at Mainau Castle is the traditional opening event for the Mainau Flower Year and invites visitors into rooms with colourful displays. Visitors enjoy looking around, lingering and drawing inspiration from the many attractive home accessories and decorations, both small and large. This year is no exception and the Mainau exhibition team has put together many accessories and ideas for you for the upcoming Spring and Easter celebrations.

Orchid Show | 24 March to 7 MayThe annual orchid show in Mainau Island’s Palm House, from March until May, is one of the most significant in Europe. This magnificent show starts off the Flower Year attracting many visitors with its beautiful display of orchid species including rare wild orchids and also precious varieties.

Tulips and Spring Flowers | AprilMainau gardeners plant almost 400 different types of tulips in the flowerbeds and meadows each year. The long carpet of tulips growing along the Spring Avenue is truly a magnificent sight. Enjoy more than 1,000,000 tulips in the meadow on Mainau Island’s southern flank.

4th International Lake Constance Folklore Day | 23 AprilIn the beautiful setting of the flower island, about 1.000 persons in traditional costume present the diversity and livelihood of traditional costumes and entertain the visitors with traditional dances, music and dialects.

The Count’s Island Festival | 25 to 28 May The ethos of the 16th Count’s Island Festival is again all about “strolling, shopping and enjoyment.” More than 70 national and international exhibitors offer everything you can imagine on the theme of “trends and life style for the garden lover”. As well as enjoying the varied programme of events, you can obtain tips and suggestions for your own garden or balcony from the Mainau gardening experts.

Rose Blossoms and voting for the Mainau Queen of Roses | June to SeptemberDuring the rose month of June, more than 1.000 varieties of the Queen of Flowers bloom along the Wild and Bush Rose Promenade and in the Italian Rose Garden which was laid by Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden at the foot of the castle in 1871. Vote from 10 to 26 Juni for your favourite to be crowned the Mainau Queen of Roses.

Midsummer Festival | 24 JuneThe Bernadotte family has their roots in Sweden. Experience the traditional Swedish Midsummer Festival! As you enjoy the typical music and dance of Sweden and its delicacies on the forecourt of the Rothaus lakeside terraces directly on the lake, you can sense the merriment and zest for life for which our neighbours from the far North are renowned.

Dahlia Blossoms | End of August to OctoberOver 12,000 dahlias in more than 270 different varieties provide a brilliant firework of blossoms each year heralding the arrival of autumn. Vote from 2 September to 3 October for your favourite to be crowned this year’s Mainau Queen of Dahlias.

The Count’s Castle Festival | 29 September to 3 OctoberThe Count’s Castle Festival has “Noblesse Oblige” as its motto. This is a very special shopping experience in the Baroque Mainau Castle in rooms not usually opened to the public and offers you the opportunity to buy select and beautiful jewelry and fashion items and choice accessories as well as culinary delicacies.

Winter Exhibition 2017/2018 | From mid-November 2017 to the beginning of February 2018From mid-November 2017 to the beginning of February 2018, the exhibition rooms of the Baroque Mainau Castle will be transformed into a magical winter world. Scandinavian winter decorations for your own home such as Nordic imps and colourful wooden Swedish Dala horses will welcome visitors to a leisurely shopping environment. During craft activities such as making your own imps, do-it-yourself enthusiasts can let themselves be whisked away to the far North and can then enjoy a walk in the wintry park of the flower island afterwards.
