Did Jesus fulfil the OT promises and predictions of the coming Messiah?

Starting from the beginning

• Adam and Eve had complete freedom to live in friendship with God

• One trespass led to condemnation for all men (Rom. 5:18).

• God declares a plan to rescue us and make friends with us again.

What is God’s Plan?

• A unified plan for all of history –“a plan for the fullness of time,” Gal. 4:4–5

–“to unite all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth” (Eph. 1:10),

–“to the praise of his glory” (Eph. 1:12).

The unfolding of God’s rescue plan

• God choses people declaring his responsibility for their destiny • promises and predictions of a saviour– Explicit: surveyed today– Symbolic: Wednesday

• fulfillments of these promises

The rescue plan is ancient

9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’Isa. 46:9–10

The Saviour King

• Jacob prophesied The scepter will not depart from Judah,

nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.

The Saviour King• Balaam’s prophecy"I see him, but not now;

I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth.

The saviour the Son of David• Nathan utters God’s promise to King David11 ……'The LORD declares to you that the LORD

himself will establish a house for you. 12 When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’

Saviour God• 6 For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

• 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. Isaiah 9:6-7 (BC 742)

God’s suffering servant:Isaiah 53:10-12 (690 BC)

10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

• 11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

• 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,

and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made

intercession for the transgressors.

The saviour the son of man

13 "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Daniel 7:13-14 (553 BC)

The last OT Prophecy9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! The inter-testament period

• DURATION: 400 years before christ• Prophecy ceased• The Jews under great political and economical

pressures• The Jews ideas about the anticipated Messiah

Military leader

• From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."Genesis 3:15

The rescue plan is ancient

The OT looks forward to the Messiah

• Before the Exile: a man in future who is:– A king like David – A military leader, a liberator – A prophet from God

• Post-exile: A supernatural person– Ancient– Comes on a clouds– Rules over everlasting Kingdom– Suffering servant

Peter recognize Jesus as the Messiah

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”

‘suffering messiah is inconceivable’, said Peter

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. The son of man

• 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.’ Mark 8:38

Servant of the Lord

•45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Jesus rejects ‘son of David’ title

35 ……..‘Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? 36 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:‘“The Lord said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right handuntil I put your enemies under your feet.’”37 David himself calls him “Lord”. How then can he be his son?’Mark 12:35-37

The messiah Son of God

61 …………Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’62 ‘I am,’ said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’

Jesus is the fulfilment of the OT promises

“Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.’” Luke 24:44–48

The uniqueness of Jesus Messiah

• Fully God fully man• Atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4:10)

• Gave his life as a ransom for many (mark 10:45)

• Thus he freed us from sin and Guilt• He and the father are one John 10:30

• He forgives sin Mark 2:5

• He accepted worship John 20:28

God’s plan in action

• Past: have been saved of the punishment of sin• Present: being saved from the power of sin• Future: will be saved of the very presence of sin

Promises of A Rescuer/ Saviour

• For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 2 Cor. 1:20
