The Friction Circle

by John Brandt, President

Amazing it is how fast the summer worked its way through this year. As I write this the crisp cool breeze almost makes me think it is springtime and the track is about beckon, but there is no mistaking the orange and brown hues of fall with the sound of the dry leaves underfoot and the savory scent of a warm meal inside. If I still find myself confused about what season it is, all I need to do is re-play a few of the thousands of political robo-calls on my answering machine.

Call it what you like, the social season, the off season, the planning season…whatever! It’s firmly here, and that is great news for all of us who like to visit with old friends and make new ones over some good food and drink…at events like the Holiday party, or our big New Member social; both of which promise to be tremendous.

We can also consider this as a time for rebuilding- and I don’t just mean mechanical components, though clearly there is a lot of that going on...I want to encourage...implore even that you find some time to help the club continue the level of excellence that we are known for. There are a number of ways that you can be of great service to your Mid-Ohio PCA. You all grasp that it takes the effort of many to produce our fantastic events and you can get involved just by sharing some ideas at a Board Meeting- perhaps you have thoughts about how we can improve our driving events or you have a great idea for a socializer? Perhaps you have a bitter grievance to air...we want to hear from you!!We are starting the process of forming a committee to produce this very magazine, “DOS”, or “Die Offene Strasse”. As long as DOS has been around, it’s been the work, some would say, the burden, of one sole individual who has been tasked with the full content, layout, advertising and production of the magazine. This is a big job for one person and as long as I can remember, there has always been a troubling reality that, sooner than later, we would probably be looking for somebody to take over as the DOS editor.

Bill Slone is in my mind the finest newsletter editor we’ve had. He’s made strides forward in the look and content that has been unprecedented, and through his commitment, DOS is a better product than it has ever been. Bill’s energy though is not limitless and we cannot expect any Editor’s commitment to be indefinite, so it is our hope to divide this big assignment into more palatable bites for several people to chew. I expect that in addition to the Editor, there will be Advertising Reps, a Production Liaison, Style Director and several member correspondents “At-Large”. Please consider pitching-in with the magazine! Look for an announcement to form the committee in the near future.

I want to say “Thanks, Ron Thomas” one more time for hosting the Car show and Chili cook-off party in October. It was a perfect day and absolutely everyone had a great time. There were over 50 cars on display, all forms of gorgeous Porsches to look at, and for the first time, the show featured non-Porsche cars owned by members too- this added some real entertainment to the day and I think we should keep doing it!. Yes the cars were the stars but with a great supporting role played by a plentiful supply of delicious chili. This year’s winning chili was made by Patrice Hennessy who unseated the long-reigning champ Sheila Henderson. I’m looking forward to the re-match!

Again, make sure to come to the Holiday party on December 8th. It will be one to remember due to the awesome venue of Wedgewood Country Club and the fact that we arranged for a grand, over the top meal of Filets and Tails.

I really hope to see you there. It will be a great way to cap off an exceptional year and look forward to a great season ahead.

Milestone:This is a milestone for me, the 24th issue as Editor of Die Offene Strasse. We have accomplished what I believe are several positive changes for the newsletter: more member articles, bigger format, some color features, and 2 articles published in PCA’s Porsche Panorama. After 2 years, I think it is time for me to step back as Editor and let other individuals with fresh ideas take over the reins of Die Offene Strasse. As John Brandt wrote in his column, we are looking for a group of individuals to share the responsibilities of the newsletter. This has been done in other Regions, and has worked out well. In addition to the areas that John mentioned in his column, the next Editor, or newsletter committee, should be knowledgeable in digital publishing. (Certainly more knowledgeable than I am!) If you are interested in serving as Editor or one of the other positions, please let myself or John Brandt know.

HolidayParty: The annual Holiday Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 8th. It was incorrectly listed as December 1st in previous DOS issues. If you haven’t received your invitation yet, it will be in the mail shortly.

NoALMSatMid-Ohioin2013: The American Le Mans Series released their 2013 schedule, and Mid-Ohio was noticeably absent from the schedule. Both ALMS & Mid-Ohio stated their reasons (all of which sounded like Marketing Spin to me), but said the unified series (ALMS and Grand-Am) will be back on Mid-Ohio’s schedule in 2014. Let’s hope so.

DecemberDieOffeneStrasse: December’s issue of DOS will be late next month. Kathy and I are headed to the United States Grand Prix in Austin, TX, and will not be back until late November. I hope to have pictures of our MORPCA members attending the race...or at least pictures of us at a local pub!

Meet the Candidates for the

2013 MORPCA Board

John BrandtCandidate for President

A lifelong fan of the marque, John got his first Porsche, a ‘71-911E Targa, in the summer of 1996 and immediately joined Mid Ohio Region PCA. A 944 followed shortly thereafter and he started going to track events at that point. That led to the white ‘84 Carrera track car that is familiar to the club. “Participating in the DE program for a number of years led to a growing involvement in the functions of the club and I found that the more I became involved- the more fun it became.”

John served as Vice President in 2010 and has been President since 2011 with a continual goal of facilitating great times and camaraderie in MORPCA. He has acted on the club race committee as enduro chair and volunteered on the DE tech inspection crew for years. John is a PCA nationally certified driver’s education instructor and is involved with several club’s DE programs, most notably in this region.

John is a graduate of Ohio U. and works as a mortgage loan officer. He and his wife Erin have one son, William, who is 11 and is already a skilled Go Kart Driver, and track regular like his dad! Erin likes to visit on track days and especially enjoys going to social events like the holiday party, chili cook-off, and car shows. Maybe we can get her out to the polar bear trap shoot this year!

“MORPCA has been great to me. We truly have a special group of people- the best I know anywhere. That’s why I remain excited to serve. If elected, I promise to give my full attention and do my best to serve the needs and wishes of all the interests of our club.”

Mike StonerCandidate for Vice President

I joined MORPCA shortly after purchasing my 2001 Speed Yellow Boxster. I have been active in MORPCA since 2006 when Debra and I became empty nesters. I was Treasurer of MORPCA from 2007 to 2010, VP since 2011 and participate in track events, car shows, casual driving events and occasionally hosting social events at our home. I’m pleased to share a 1999 White Boxster track car, “Mach Schnell”, with Jeff Brubaker and Gerhard Hillmann.

I was trained as an accountant, worked as a CPA or CFO for nearly three decades, and am now the managing partner for a private equity group. I serve as a board member for two local companies, serve on the board of a local non-profit, chair a committee for the Hilliard Board of Education and would be honored to serve as Vice President of MORPCA.

Meet the Candidates for the

2013 MORPCA Board

Kevin HennessyCandidate forTreasurer

I have done my best this year to continue the great tradition of service that past MORPCA Treasurers have given to the club. I hope my efforts this year have reaffirmed your choice in electing me Treasurer in 2012 and warrants your vote again for my re-election to Treasurer in 2013.

I run for the position of Treasure, to both contribute back to the club, but also to pay it forward, so that others can have the opportunity to experience what I and others have benefited from over the years of MORPCA membership. I would appreciate your vote and if reelected, I look forward to my continued work with the MORPCA Board and Chairpersons in support of the club’s membership and activities.

Patrice, Targa, Quattro (our latest 4 legged addition), and I hope to see you out at one of the clubs upcoming events, as there is no time like the present to get involved in your club.

Betsy MacDonell Candidate for Secretary

I have been a member of MORPCA since 2000, soon after the purchase of my first 911. My first of 7 Driver’s Education events was the next year and I have been involved with the club ever since. The Secretary position looked like fun so I have been the scribe for about 7 years. During the board meetings the Club Race sounded like another fun way to help the club, so I volunteered for the Track Steward’s Assistant job for the last five race weekends. I live in Worthington with my husband Parker, and my 2 children, Lindsey and Alec.

Auto racing returned to Put-in-Bay (South Bass Island) on Lake Erie through the support of the Put-in-Bay Road Race Heritage Society on Sept. 20, 2012. For the previous three years, the Road Race Reunion included only tours of the original street course. This year, the 4th year of the reunion, true wheel-to-wheel competition debuted at the PIB Airport. A one-mile course was set up on the runways; with hay bales creating curves to simulate a road course for the field of mostly under 2 liter sports cars. As well, all entrants were, again, escorted in a 2-lap parade on the original course through the streets of the town.

Dick Snyder and his 1959 356A Convertible D finished first in GROUP 1 in one of two 8 lap races. Eric Pickering finished second driving a 970cc 1963 Morris Mini Cooper in GROUP 1. Unfortunately, Bruce Pickering just couldn’t coax another 8 lap race from their little British car as it retired for the day with a broken throttle cable. Races were shortened from 10 laps to 8 as Med Flight landed on the runway to shuttle an Island resident to a mainland hospital. It’s Island Time, Mon!!

The first race on the 3.1 mile course at Put-in-Bay was held in 1952 and continued through 1959, and an attempt to resurrect the island race occurred in 1963. The race was popular and was limited to Sports Cars under 2 litres and a field of 100 cars (they were turning cars away). The demise of the race occurred when the Ohio legislature passed a bill outlawing competition on city streets.

The reunion events are being conducted by the Put-in-Bay Road Race Heritage Society, which aspires to celebrate the Put-in-Bay Road Races and ensure the history of those races is captured and preserved. Photos, taken by MOR member, Daniel Mainzer, Mainzer Photography, are posted on the website: www.mainzerphoto.com; andwww.putinbayphotos.com/RoadRace2012.

The south side of Columbus offers up quite a variety of automotive facilities. There are a number of wrecking yards and scrap dealers- “You pull it”, Buckeye Auto Wrecking, All City Auto just to name a few. There are also automotive themed refreshment sites such as the Junkyard Lounge and TK’s. Railroad tracks crisscross this area and nestled in between these are an assortment of used tire dealers like Dolab’s 2 and Rubios. And the pearl amidst all this is Columbus Motor Speedway and today they are hosting our Porsche Club’s autocross.

It was a beautiful early fall day. The summer heat had left Columbus at least for a little while. Morning temperatures were a crisp 50 degrees. And this brought out the Porsches. We had 16 Porsches show up with everything from a 914 and early 911’s to a Cayenne. Did you know that the Mid Size Porsche club rules allow the 914 and the Cayenne to run in the same autocross class? We didn’t either but the results showed less than a second separating the two vehicles. (Horsepower for the 914- 94; Horsepower for the Cayenne Turbo- 500) Go figure. Other Porsches making the scene were a pair of 944’s, a 928, 6 air cooled 911’s, 3 water pumpers and 2 Caymans rounded out the field.

Eight X cars brought everything from Miatas to a Formula Ford and a variety of other German engineered Audis and BMW’s.

We had new timing equipment for all these cars with a nice LED display that proudly produced the times at the end of the runs. The equipment worked flawlessly and it was really a nice addition to our autocross events. A big thanks to the MOR board for approving this purchase!

As the sun rose on the backs of Dave Wenger and Jim Rybak they stared out over the Columbus Motor Speedway bowl and the course

came to them. The start would begin on the banking and for about ¼ of the track and a series of offset gates would get things started. A huge braking zone would then have the cars turning right onto the crossover which led to first of two slaloms. After completing the first slalom a hard left brought the car back to the banking where a quick straight allowed everyone to gain a lot of speed again before encountering a surprisingly tight 2nd slalom. This lead to the most open section of the course as some additional gates allowed even more speed to be created before the really big braking zone and the left turn back onto the crossover to repeat the first slalom again. The finish was just beyond that with a right turn back onto the banking.

MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting MinutesSeptember 12, 2012

Submitted by Trina Allision

Members present: Ron Thomas, Chip Henderson, John Brandt, Kevin Hennessy, Trina Allison, Frank Todaro, Jeff Brubaker, Brian Peterson, and Gerhard Hillmann.

The meeting was held at King Avenue Five Restaurant and Sports Lounge and started at 6:28pm. The minutes from the August meeting were approved. John announced that Chip Henderson will be assisting Frank Todaro with the administration and organization of the Driving Events Committee. Frank mentioned that the program next year will not be asking instructors at these events to pay to instruct. He hopes to fine tune the already excellent program with help from Chip. Kevin then launched into the financials of the track events. The most recent event, Club Race and Driver’s Education at Mid-Ohio, had more expenses than usual due to fees for track clean up after incidents. Bills continue to roll from the track, but Kevin estimates that the Club made about 20K from the weekend. The event had more racers and drivers so it had more expenses. The volunteer corner workers on Friday were paid and the awards were more expensive. All of our driving events have made money this year. John stated that he would like to offer a 4th DE event next year. Frank said that the 3 DE events did not have any problems with attendance in fact he had waiting lists for some. He wants to put on the best DE and Club Race we can. Ron would like to see a just one fun race and on Sunday just do enduros and DE sessions. Frank emphasized the following important points for the program; the dates has to stay off Mother’s Day weekend, an instructors training event could be offered, and he will ask for an additional time for another DE. The Mid-Ohio CR/DE event was an “excellent weekend” according to Frank. We will know more when Dave shares his thoughts on it as CR Chairman.

The club financials are in great shape according to Kevin. He will work up the number for our charitable contribution. (28% of adjusted net income at the end of year)

Trina pitched the Holiday Party starting with the menu selections at Wedgewood Country Club. The dinner will cost about $55 per person as described. Ron made a motion for the club to subsidize the dinner by $30 per person. Frank provided a second and the motion was approved by a unanimous vote.

Gerhard announced that the next Third Thursday event will be held at Wurst and Bier at Crosswoods. It will be held on the 20th of October and at the usual time of 6 to 9 pm.

Ron provided a recap of P2O in Granville. He had a great time and despite the lower number of cars registered most people thought we had more due to the wide streets. The event will definitely be there next year. P2O will be featured in C magazine this month. Byers Imports was a big help in the success of the event. Ron has offered to host a fall party at his home on October 13. The event will be billed as the MORPCA Anniversary Party and Chill Cook-off. Kevin made a motion to allocate $1500 for the event and Brian Peterson provided a second. The motion passed.

Jeff has been working on some great technical sessions for the winter. These will include a visit with Michael Shanks Racing program and a detail clinic. The dates will be announced soon.

Trina announced the membership numbers for August. The club is at 938 total members with 9 new and 29 renewals. It is the best month ever!! She also mentioned that 2 new members came out of the most recent Byers Driving Experience at Mid-Ohio.

Brian reminded everyone that the new website is a contribution website where people can post content themselves. Brian asked that each board member contact him so he can show how it is done. John asked if Brian knew how many people have clicked on MOPPCA.org. Brian will get that number for the next meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 9:01pm. The next meeting will be held at King Avenue Five Restaurant and Sports Lounge on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 6:30pm. Plan to meet fellow club members for warm-up cocktails prior to the meeting around 6pm. All members are invited to the board meeting.
