Principal’s Message SCHOOL VALUES Based on the results of our student, parent and staff surveys, our new school values are Respect, Resilience and Responsi-bility. Other responses which were popular were related to stu-dents being learners, doing their best and caring. These as-pects will be tied into our School Wide Positive Behaviour framework which staff were planning on our pupil free day last Monday. An example of this would be a teacher asking a stu-dent “Are you being a responsible learner?” or “Are you being a respectful friend?”. Once completed the framework will be provided to our school community so that we can all reinforce the values using a common language. UNIFORM School Council have reviewed our Uniform Policy and Dress Code, which is included in this newsletter. One clarification re-fers to netball skirts. When netball skirts were included in the dress code a few years ago it was the intent that they would be worn as an alternative to the school dress, in Summer. Recent-ly students have been wearing netball skirts in Winter with leg-gings underneath. From the beginning of the 2018 school year netball skirts will not be included as a uniform item and will only be worn by students participating in inter-school sport. PARENT OPINION SURVEY This week 91 randomly selected families, (family names are generated by a computer program), will receive a letter with instructions on how to complete a parent opinion survey. The survey asks families to consider a wide range of issues to do with the school and also provides an opportunity for families to contribute comments on what they like, or what they might like to change at the school. The use of opinion data to monitor school performance is a very important step towards making our school the best it can possibly be. Schools conduct annual and anonymous opinion surveys for staff, children and parents and use the information to drive school improvements. Results from all surveys are analysed and discussed at school council, by the leadership team, staff and the regional office. These survey results do have an impact. We encourage those parents who receive a survey to complete it thoughtfully. Thanks for your cooperation. 2018 STAFF AND STUDENT PLANNING Planning for the 2018 school year is beginning. We are re-quired to submit, to the Department Of Education and Training, an estimate of our 2018 enrolments. To further assist with our planning for 2018, we would appreciate hearing from any fami-lies who know they will be moving from the area, or whose chil-dren will not be returning to Seaholme Primary next year. Please make sure you notify the school in writing if this is the case. Have a lovely week, Merridy Patterson

SEAHOLME PRIMARY DRESS CODE Latest Update: 24/07/2017
BACKGROUND The code, which includes the school uniform, is school policy and takes precedence over studentsʼ individual preference in matters of dress. School Council has carefully considered the key criteria set down in the ʻEducation Act 2008ʼ in the development of the Code. As such, School Council believes the Code is: • Respectful of the cultural norms of the school community • Suitable for students in regard to the tasks and functions required at school • Reasonable and contemporary • Appropriate in consideration of health and safety
SCHOOL COLOURS AND LOGO The school colours are maroon, gold & white. The school logo is an embroidered badge with a seahorse and the school name.
CLOTHING The Dress Code requires all students to wear school uniform every day, unless they are covered by an exemption (detailed in this document). The exception to this is any ʻcasual/costumeʼ days. The uniform consists of: a. Items as outlined in the School Uniform List and available from Double C Jeanery b. Items purchased elsewhere that match our school colours and style and have no other logo, writing or decoration on them c. A combination of the above The majority of uniform items are supplied by Double C Jeanery, an external provider of uniforms and can be purchased at their store in Laverton.
FOOTWEAR The Dress Code requires all students to wear suitable, safe, closed in footwear, which allows them to participate in the full range of school activities. School Council highly recommends black school shoes or plain white or black runners with a non-marking sole. Thongs, sandals, crocs and slip on par ty type shoes are not permitted.
HATS Sun hats are compulsory in Term 1 and Term 4, in line with The Cancer Council V ictoria s̓ SunSmart Program, an interna-tionally recognised skin cancer prevention program. Students must wear either a yellow legionnaire or bucket hat. Both are available from the office. During Term 2 and Term 3, hats are not compulsory however students may continue to wear a sun hat or plain maroon beanie. Hats are expected to be worn on all excursions as they help to identify our students in a crowd.
BAGS All students require a functional school bag, with their name clearly marked. School Council highly recommends the Seaholme Primary School bag available from the Double C Jeanery.
RELIGIOUS HEADWEAR Students may wear religious headwear, such as a hijab or kippah. However, School Council highly recommends these are in the school colours.
DRESS CODE EXEMPTION School Council, in compliance with equal opportunity law, provides grounds for exemptions when the Dress Code: • Offends a religious belief by the student or parent • Prevents a student from complying with a requirement of his/her ethnic background • Prevents a student with a disability from being able to attend school or participate in school activities • Is not suitable for a student with a particular health or size condition • Is not suitable for a student when the parents can demonstrate particular economic hardship When a request is made and granted, the Principal, Assistant Principal and School Council President consider what type of exemption is required. Partial modification of dress requirement rather than complete exemption is investigated. A child who gains a partial exemption is still required to wear other items in school colours. Requests for exemption are kept by the Principal/Assistant Principal in the strictest confidence.
YEAR 6 SIGNATURE ITEM Year 6 students, may wear a signature uniform item that includes the school logo. Any changes to this item requires approval from School Council during the conceptual stage and should be presented to School Council prior to the end of Term One each year. REVIEW OF THE DRESS CODE School Council carries out a yearly review of the Dress Code and reports on this via School Council meetings. If a change is deemed necessary, to reflect emerging safety issues or any significant changes within the school community, consultation regarding the proposed change is carried out. The change is then communicated to the school community. COMMUNICATION OF THE DRESS CODE Prospective students and parents are notified of the Dress Code prior to enrolment and opportunities to view and order the school uniform items are provided. It is also available on the school website or by re-quest. OBSERVING THE DRESS CODE If a student is not dressed according to the Dress Code, a note from the parent/carer should be provided to the class teacher. If the student continues to come to school out of uniform the following course of action is undertaken: 1. Phone call and/or note sent home 2. Copy of the Dress Code is sent home to be read, signed and returned 3. Follow up phone call, if required If the student continues to not comply with the Dress Code, constructive communication between the Principal, Assistant Principal, student and parents begins. Parents are required to provide reasons why their child is not conforming to the Dress Code. These reasons are immediately investigated and acted upon by the Principal, with appropriate assistance, as required. HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES For health and safety reasons, the following criteria must be adhered to by all students:
• Jewellery (excluding small earrings or studs and watches) is dangerous and not permitted. (see Jewellery Policy). Religious or cultural significant jewellery must be worn inside clothing at all times. • Fingernails must be short and clean. • Shoulder length hair and longer must be tied back. Students should be dressed appropriately for weather conditions and the activities they are in-volved in.
OTHER INFORMATION The school provides a second hand uniform service which is managed by parent volunteers. School uniform may be purchased at Double C Jeanery, 2 Aviation Rd Laverton 3029, Ph 9369 4307, email: [email protected] For any other information regarding the Dress Code please contact the Principal on 9398 2806.
