As we reflect and celebrate our 75th Anniversary, we proudly acknowledge the long and illustrious story of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Founded by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally in 1939, the RWB is Canada’s premier ballet company, one of the oldest ballet companies in North America, and the first in the British Commonwealth to be granted a Royal charter.

Over the years, the RWB, its dancers, and its choreographers have received many international awards and have brought honour to Winnipeg, to Manitoba and to Canada through special distinctions in international competitions and performances from Tokyo to Varna to Paris. Our artistic vision respects the traditions of ballet, while at the same time endeavours to find new ways to stretch the conventions and test the limits of the art form without discarding its defining formal conventions. Ballet is modernized through creativity, bringing us to the crossroads of tradition and experimentation, speaking today through the prism of the past.

We are proud to be Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The RWB plays a leading role in the Winnipeg arts community, just as Winnipeg is fundamental to who we are and why we do what we do. We perform five annual productions here at home; our School Recreational Division introduces dance to countless people in and around the city each year; and our Professional Division trains artists for careers in dance. Some of these individuals were born and raised in this city; others moved here at a very young age to train at our world-renowned School; still others came later in their careers to have an opportunity to perform with our legendary ballet Company. We work with many Winnipeg-based designers and choreographers to create new repertoire and to revive the classics. We employ dozens of Winnipeg-based teachers and musicians and our Wardrobe Department is comprised entirely of Winnipeg-based talent. The same goes for our highly proficient technical crew.

Proceeds from our annual Gala enable the RWB to present the high quality performances that our patrons have come to expect and enjoy. We graciously appreciate your support. Together, we will continue to achieve our mission to enrich the human experience by teaching, creating and performing outstanding dance.
