Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Individual Research Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline: December 15, 2011

The Foundation supports research focused on strategies to promote neural growth and survival, evaluating the efficacy of drugs/interventions related to secondary neuronal injury, defining anatomical characteristics of spinal cord injury, and elucidating the biological mechanisms to improve concomitant functions affected by spinal cord injury and alleviate pain and spasticity.

Amount of Awards: Two-year awards for senior scientists and young investigators up to $75,000 per year, including indirect costs up to 10%. Postdoctoral Fellowships up to $60,000 per year, including indirect costs up to 10%.

Muscular Dystrophy Research Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadlines: LOIs due December 15, 2011 Full Proposals due January 15, 2012

Grants support independent investigators with interests in developing treatments for the muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system, including the muscular dystrophies, motor neuron diseases, peripheral nerve disorders, inflammatory myopathies, disorders of the neuromuscular junction, and metabolic diseases of muscle, among others.

Amount of Award: Unlimited for one to three years, including 10% percent indirect costs.

Muscular Dystrophy Development Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadlines: LOIs due December 15, 2011 Full Proposals due January 15, 2012

Grants support members of a research team in the laboratory of an independent investigator. Under guidance, the applicant will conduct a neuromuscular disease research project relating to the muscular dystrophies, motor neuron diseases, peripheral nerve disorders, inflammatory myopathies, disorders of the neuromuscular junction, and metabolic diseases of muscle, among others.

Amount of Award: Up to $60,000 per year for one to three years, including 10% indirect costs.

The Huntington Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences Deadline: December 15, 2011

Awards for Fellowships (residential) for faculty and post-doctoral Fellows support humanities research, using the Huntington’s collections, in the fields of history, literature, art history, and the history of science and medicine.

Amount of Awards: Barbara Thom Postdoctoral Fellowship, Mellon Fellowship, Dornsife Fellowship, and Dibner History of Science Fellowship awards are $50,000 each.

National Brain Tumor Society Innovation Research Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadlines: LOIs due December 9, 2011

Invited Full Proposals are due four weeks after notification that the LOI was accepted

Innovation Research Grants support transformative or catalytic scientific research projects, at any stage of the research and development continuum that will significantly move the field forward toward effective brain tumor therapies for adult and/or pediatric brain tumor patients.

Amount of Award: $150,000 per year for one to two years; indirect costs are not allowed.

Schomburg Center Scholars in Residence Departments: Arts and Sciences and the School of Theology and Ministry Deadline: December 1, 2011

This program support scholars with research interests in the black experience, with a specific interest in research projects on African, Afro-American, and Afro-Caribbean history and culture.

Amount of Award: $30,000 for six months; $60,000 for twelve months.

Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test Departments: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Deadline December 1, 2011

This award supports pilot projects for both seasoned and less established investigators as they discover new methods for early detection, especially new techniques in biological or immunologic methods.

Amount of Award: Up to $40,000 over one to three years.

American Federation for Aging Research: The Cart Fund Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline LOIs due December 1, 2011 Full Applications due February 15, 2012

Awards support exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s Disease research projects that are new projects that have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research.

Amount of Award: Up to $250,000 for up to two years; indirect costs are not allowed.

American Society for Mass Spectrometry Research Awards Departments: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environment Sciences, and Physics Deadline: November 30, 2011

Awards support research by young scientists in mass spectrometry and allied topics such as advancement of techniques and instrumentation, as well as fundamental research in chemistry, geology, forensics, biological sciences, and physics.

Amount of Award: $25,000; indirect costs are not allowed.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Departments: Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the Connell School Deadline: November 15, 2011

Multiple award mechanisms support studies to increase understanding of the causes of suicide and factors related to suicide risk, or to test treatments and other interventions designed to prevent suicide. Six types of grants, from postdoctoral fellowships to distinguished investigator awards, are awarded for neurobiological, genetic, epidemiological, clinical, or psychosocial research on suicide.

Amount of Awards: Amounts range from $30,000-$225,000 over one to two years, depending upon the award.

National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences and the Lynch School Deadline: November 4, 2011

Fellowships support early career scholars working in critical areas of education research and develop the careers of its recipients through professional development activities involving National Academy of Education members.

Amount of Award: $55,000 for one full academic year or $27,500 for each of two contiguous, half-time years.

American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund Departments: Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physics Deadline: November 4, 2011

Research grant programs support fundamental research in areas including chemistry, the earth sciences, chemical and petroleum engineering, and related fields such as polymers and materials science.

Amount of Awards: New Directions: seed money of $100,000 over two years. Doctoral New Investigator Grants: $100, 000 over two years for faculty within three years of first appointment. Undergraduate New Investigator Grants: $50,000 over two years for faculty within the first three years of first appointment.

The YSP supports the career development of investigators focused on the development of children in immigrant families, with particular interests in English Language Learners with learning disabilities; children living in families with parents who are refugees; immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean; the effects of racial/ethnic bias/discrimination on newcomer children’s identity development and on other developmental, education, and health outcomes; mobility of immigrant children and families and the consequences for these children; and the effects of deportation or detention of family members on the children living in immigrant families.

Amount of Award: $150,000, including 15% indirect costs.

American Cancer Society Grants and Awards Departments: Arts and Sciences, the Connell School, and the Graduate School of Social Work Deadline: October 17, 2011, 5:00 p.m. ET

Multiple grant opportunities support high impact and innovative cancer research and training across a wide range of disciplines to meet critically important needs in the control of cancer. Grant areas include Research Grants for Independent Investigators, Mentored Training and Career Development Grants, and New Initiatives and RFAs in Health Disparities and in Palliative Care.

Amount of Awards: Amounts range from $60,000 to $200,000 per year, plus indirect costs, depending upon the award.

National Psoriasis Foundation Discovery and Translational Research Grants Program Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline: October 17, 2011

Grants support early stage research projects that demonstrate the potential to significantly increase our understanding of the genetic and environmental basis for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, with priority consideration given to applications that address genetics, cell biology, immunology, or epidemiological/health services research.

Amount of Awards: Discovery Research Grants: $50,000 for one year; indirect costs are not allowed. Translational Research Grants: $100,000 per year for two years; indirect costs are not allowed.

America Academy of Arts & Sciences Visiting Scholars Departments: Arts and Sciences and the Lynch School Deadline: October 15, 2011

Visiting Scholars (residential) are young scholars whose research is focused on Science, Technology, and Global Security; Social Policy and American Institutions; Humanities and Culture; or Education (at all levels).

Amount of Award: $40,000 for Postdoctoral Fellows; $60,000 for Faculty (not to exceed one half of current salary).

National Humanities Center Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences and the School of Theology and Ministry Deadline: October 15, 2011

Fellowships (residential) support scholars from all fields in the humanities, the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects.

Amount of Award: At least half salary and travel expenses to and from North Carolina for Fellows and dependents.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program Departments: Arts and Sciences, the Carroll School, and the Law School Deadline: October 15, 2011

Fellows from the fields of business administration, economics, journalism, law, political science, and public policy participate in two high-level work placements in the federal government and private sector in Germany.

Amount of Award: A monthly stipend of approximately $2,458.01 USD for the program in Germany (September-May) and additional stipends for travel, insurance, and language training.

John Templeton Foundation Departments: Arts and Sciences, the Carroll School, the Lynch School, and the School of Theology and

Ministry Deadline: October 14, 2011

The Foundation supports research (and disseminating the results of research) on issues surrounding altruism, creativity, free will, generosity, gratitude, intellect, love, prayer, and purpose in its Core Funding Areas of Science and the Big Questions, Character Development, Freedom and Free Enterprise, Exceptional Cognitive Talent and Genius, and Genetics.

Amount of Award: In 2010, grants ranged from $200,000 to over $4 million.

American Health Assistance Foundation Alzheimer’s Disease Research Awards Departments: Biology, Chemistry, the Connell School, and the Graduate School of Social Work

Deadline: October 12, 2011, 11:30 p.m. ET

Grants support innovative, early-stage research on Alzheimer’s disease that will promote advances in the etiology, prevention, and treatment of the disease. Standard Awards provide significant funding for researchers who have already generated some amount of preliminary data. Pilot Awards support highly innovative, very focused research with modest preliminary data. Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards support young researchers in their final stages of mentored training.

Amount of Awards: Standard Awards: $400,000 for three years; indirect costs are not allowed. Pilot Awards: $150,000 for two years; indirect costs are not allowed. Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards: $100,000 for two years; indirect costs are not allowed.

Amount of Award: Up to $60,000 plus a housing and moving allowance.

Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Fellows Departments: Arts and Sciences Deadline: October 3, 2011, 11:59 p.m. ET (for creative arts, humanities, and social sciences) November 15, 2011, 11:59 p.m. ET (for mathematics and natural sciences)

Fellowships (residential) support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishments who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields in a wide range of areas.

Amount of Award: $70,000 for one year.

Society for the Humanities Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences Deadline: Preliminary Fellowship Forms due immediately

Proposals due October 1, 2011

Fellowships support scholarly reflections on “RISK @ Humanities”, its focal theme for 2012-2013, as a means of analyzing historical, theoretical, and global understandings of risk as a concept and as a reality that lies at the heart of the humanities and the arts. Interdisciplinary projects are sought to question how risk shapes the humanities and how the humanities might dialogue with broader biological, ecological, economic, and technological approaches to risk.

Amount of Award: $45,000.

Irvington Institute Fellowship Program of the Cancer Research Institute Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline: October 1, 2011

Awards support postdoctoral fellows who are embarking on a career in immunology research with direct relevance to cancer.

Amount of Award: $50,000 for the first year, $53,000 for the second year, and $57,000 for the third year, with an additional $1,500 each year to help pay for research supplies, travel to scientific meetings, or health insurance.

Life Sciences Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline: October 1, 2011

Fellowships support postdoctoral researchers across the spectrum of the life sciences, including biochemistry; cell, developmental, molecular, plant, structural, organismic population and evolutionary biology; endocrinology; immunology; microbiology; neurobiology; physiology; and virology.

Amount of Award: $57,000 per year for three years; indirect costs are not allowed.

Fellowships support faculty in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences in preparing a major piece of scholarly work.

American Council of Learned Sciences Collaborative Research Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences, the Law School, the Lynch School, and the School of Theology and

Ministry Deadline: September 28, 2011, 9:00 p.m. ET

Fellowships support collaborative research in small teams of two or more in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences.

Amount of Award: Up $35,000 for assistant professor, up to $40,000 for associate professor, and up to $60,000 for full professor, not to exceed $140,000 for any one project, as well as up to $20,000 for travel, materials, or research assistance.

American Council of Learned Sciences Digital Innovation Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences, the Law School, the Lynch School, and the School of Theology and

Ministry Deadline: September 28, 2011, 9:00 p.m. ET

Fellowships support digitally-based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences.

Amount of Award: Up to $60,000 towards an academic year’s leave, plus project costs of up to $25,000.

American Council of Learned Sciences Burkhardt Residential Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences, the Law School, the Lynch School, and the School of Theology and

Fellowships support long-term, unusually ambitious projects in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences at one of the participating residential research centers.

Fellowships support advanced assistant professors and untenured associate professors in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences whose scholarly contributions have advanced their fields and who have well designed and carefully developed plans for new research.

Amount of Award: $64,000, a summer stipend of $14,222, and $2,500 for research and travel.

Charles H. Hood Foundation Child Health Research Awards Program Departments: Biology, Chemistry, the Connell School, and the Lynch School Deadline: September 16, 2011, 12:00 noon ET

Awards support hypothesis-driven clinical, basic science, public health, health services research, and epidemiology projects with direct relevance to child health, for recently appointed instructors, assistant professors, associate research scientists, or equivalent positions.

Amount of Award: Two-year grants of $75,000 per year, including 10% indirect costs.

Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship Departments: Arts and Sciences Deadline: September 15, 2011

Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment in the arts and sciences. Fellows are writers, scholars, scientists, artists, playwrights, filmmakers, photographers, composers, or the like.

Amount of Award: Generally range from $25,000-$50,000 for a six- to twelve-month Fellowship.

Sloan Research Fellowship Departments: Arts and Sciences Deadline: September 15, 2011

Sloan Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, neuroscience, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, or in a related interdisciplinary field.

Amount of Award: $50,000 over two years. Indirect costs are not allowed.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation ‘A’ Awards and Epidemiology Awards Departments: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Deadline: September 15, 2011, 11:59 p.m. ET (‘A’ Award) December 15, 2011, 11:59 p.m. ET (Epidemiology Award)

‘A’ Awards support young scientists who want to jump-start their career in pediatric oncology research. Epidemiology Awards support investigators with a specific focus on novel, promising approaches to the epidemiology, early detection, and/or the prevention of childhood cancers.

Amount of Awards: ‘A’ Awards: $125,000 per year for three years, indirect costs are not allowed. Epidemiology Awards: $100,000 per year for up to two years, indirect costs are not allowed.

Awards support fundamental basic and clinical research in genetics, molecular and cell biology, molecular pharmacology, molecular virology and immunology; and translational research directly relevant to improved treatment or diagnosis of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma and, where applicable, to prevention. Scholar Awards support highly qualified investigators. Special Fellow Awards support investigators who have completed a minimum of two years of postdoctoral research training and are continuing their research under the research sponsor’s direction. Fellow Awards support promising investigators with less than two years of postdoctoral research training.

Amount of Awards: Scholar Awards: $110,000 per year for five years. Special Fellow Awards: $65,000 per year for three years. Fellow Awards: $55,000 per year for three years.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Priority Research Grants and High Priority Bridge Awards Departments: Biology, Chemistry, and the Connell School Deadlines: September 15, 2011, 12:00 midnight ET (Postdoctoral & Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship,

Career Development Award, Innovative Grant) November 1, 2011, 12:00 midnight ET (Short-Term Bridge Award)

JDRF supports exploratory, discovery, non-clinical development, clinical, and clinical development research relevant to type 1 diabetes in the therapeutic areas of immune, beta cell, and complication therapies as well as glucose control.

Amount of Awards: Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards: $43,240 to $57,568 per year for three years, plus a research allowance of $5,500; indirect costs are not allowed. Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards: up to $90,000 per year for up to three years; indirect costs are not allowed. Career Development Awards: up to $150,000 per year for up to five years, including indirect costs of 10%. Innovative Grants: up to $110,000 for one year, including indirect costs of 10%. Short-Term Bridge Awards: up to $55,000 for one year, including indirect costs of 10%.

Amount of Award: $60,000 for one year, with a possibility of an additional $60,000 for a second year; indirect costs are not allowed.

Awards support research on youth settings, how they affect youth development, and how they can be improved; and on studies that examine when, how, and under what conditions research evidence is used in policies and practices that affect youth and how its use can be improved.

Amount of Award: Typically range between $100,000 and $600,000 over two to three years, including up to 15% indirect costs.
