DHL UK RESPONSIBILITY. SIMPLY DELIVERED.

INTRODUCTION

With approximately 480,000 employees in more than 220 countries and territories, and with revenues of more than €55 billion, Deutsche Post DHL (DPDHL) is the largest and leading mail and logistics group in the world.

Corporate responsibility is a matter of great importance at DPDHL and is anchored as a principle in our Corporate Strategy, using our knowledge and global presence to make a positive contribution to society and the environment.

Under the motto “Living Responsibility” we focus on protecting the environment (GoGreen), delivering help (GoHelp) and championing education (GoTeach) and supporting volunteering activities of our employees (Global Volunteer Day, Living Responsibility Fund).

In 2013, we continued to develop our corporate responsibility strategy to further intertwine corporate responsibility and business success. Whilst our GoTeach and GoHelp (Corporate Citizenship) programmes remain unchanged, significant developments were introduced with our Shared Value proposition, as the driver of our environmental protection activities (GoGreen), the creation of a dedicated management process and implementation of an established Responsible Business Practice network for managing all CR relevant topics, developing corresponding measures and reporting on progress.

Our employees are central to delivering our “Living Responsibility” strategy; it is their dedication to local and national charities and social enterprises that ensures a culture of supporting good causes runs throughout our business.

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY IN THE UK

As the largest operator of trucks, trailers and vans in the UK, with in excess of 43,500 people working across more than 500 locations nationwide, we have a responsibility to both our employees and to the communities in which we operate.

In the UK, under the banner ‘Responsibility. Simply delivered’ we have implemented a CR strategy that is aligned to “ Living Responsibility”, focussing on three strategic areas where we feel our knowledge and expertise can best support and make a positive contribution to the communities in which we live and work;

• Road Safety – Raising awareness of the potential dangers around vehicles and promoting road safety best practices;

• Employability – Investing in training and skills development for young people and ex-military personnel;

• Engagement – Encouraging our employees to invest their time and fundraising efforts in their local communities.

All CR programmes are delivered by either the DHL UK Foundation or the DHL business, at local site level or through partnerships with not for profit/community organisations.

CR Mission To be a leading contributor to the community by protecting vulnerable road users, offering work-place opportunities, and supporting our employees in their CR activities

The DHL UK Foundation is an independent charity, founded in 1988, which funds programmes to help disadvantaged children and young people achieve their full potential.

Where possible Foundation programmes are aligned to the DHL UK CR strategy, encouraging all DHL employees to get involved in their local communities. Employee engagement activities include mentoring, career guidance, DIY support of community facilities and raising funds for national and local charities.

is at the heart of how DHL in the UK puts ‘Living Responsibility’ into action.”

ROAD SAFETY

As a global transport company with more than 22,000 vehicles in the UK, we have a responsibility to ensure we operate these vehicles safely and are always looking to reduce the likelihood of incidents to other road users and pedestrians.

Driver Training

All DHL drivers are trained to the highest standards. Every one of our drivers is required to undertake at least 35 hours of approved training every five years. Since 2011, DHL also train drivers on the Smith System Defensive Driving programme. New employees are now inducted into the programme from the outset and existing drivers undertake a coaching and mentoring phase, which exceeds the new national standards.

Trucks and Child Safety (TACS)

In addition to the extensive training and awareness programmes that all of our drivers receive, we also deliver a national road safety programme called Trucks and Child Safety (TACS), which aims to keep children safe around larger vehicles on the road.

Run by the DHL UK Foundation and delivered by DHL employees, we achieve this aim by offering free road safety and vehicle awareness training to school children aged between seven and eleven. By taking an articulated lorry into schools, our employees can explain to children how to keep safe around larger vehicles through practical and interactive demonstrations, reducing their risk of being killed or seriously injured on UK roads.

In addition to TACS, we are currently working with schools to broaden our awareness campaigns to include more generic road and cycling safety, as part of a wider engagement campaign.

“TACS is right for our children, right for our business and is simply the right thing to do.”

Jonathan Pilbro, VP Retail, Fashion and Beauty.

Vulnerable Road Users

DHL takes its role as a leading and responsible operator seriously. We are members of Transport for London’s Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme and also work with trade and business associations such as the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) to ensure we are informed of latest developments in this area and that we are part of the public policy debate, which in some instances may also mean changing the way in which we operate – for example investigating out of hours deliveries to avoid peak time congestion and so on. Other on-going public policy discussions are:

• maintaining and enforcing high standards of driver training and vehicle safety;

• improving road layout, road quality and better design of cycle lanes and ‘highways’;

• making it easier for deliveries to take place outside of peak hours;

• to encourage safe cycling behaviour; as a sponsor, DHL has been a long-standing supporter of professional cycling on the track. We also encourage and support our employees to cycle to work, so we also have a natural desire to support safe cycling.

Engineering and Technology

In association with commercial vehicle manufacturer Don-Bur, DHL has created a new coupling device for articulated Lorries - known as the ‘Safe Suzie’, which won an innovation award from the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health. The Safe Suzie helps prevent injury to lorry drivers by removing any need to climb up on to the catwalk behind a tractor unit to couple up the air and electrical lines.

Other significant improvements have been made such as:

• Automatic shut-off of the radio when the driver’s door is opened or when reverse gear is selected;

• Fitting sensors to the front of vehicles to raise driver awareness of obstacles outside the field of vision, including the nearside and step area;

• Rear proximity sensors with a flashing light which increases in frequency, warning the driver of approaching objects. This, coupled with an external audible reverse alarm increases protection while reversing, without distracting the driver;

• Fitting of forward facing cameras to DHL vehicles which provide impartial video evidence of either poor driving or poor behaviour by other road users. Valuable for training and resolving disputes;

• The DHL Express division is also now specifying reverse cameras to all vans within its fleet, which is an additional enhanced safety device for both the driver and public.

EMPLOYABILITY

As a large private sector employer, DHL provides a number of programmes via the HR community or the DHL UK Foundation that support young people with employability skills and work opportunities, as well as developing our employees.

Youth Employment

Youth unemployment is a significant problem in the UK and the freight and logistics sector faces a challenge over the coming years. Whilst 1 in 20 UK workers is employed in our industry in some way, only 7% of the workforce is aged younger than 25 years, whilst almost 46% is over 45 years old*. This highlights an opportunity to bring more young people into the logistics sector providing them with employment opportunities and enabling businesses like DHL to build a sustainable future.

In response to these challenges, DHL has extended its own training and development programme to increase support to young people who are just starting their careers.

Higher education

DHL has a number of well-established, long-running partnerships with schools and colleges in the UK and many of our employees mentor students, as well as organise visits to DHL sites, internships, work placements and ‘business talks’ on subjects that are relevant to their curriculum.

Not only do these activities deliver educational benefits by giving students a glimpse into the working world, but our employees also gain in their own personal development, often taking part year-on-year.

Graduate placements

DHL Supply Chain’s graduate trainee programme has been running for more than 20 years.

Each year it offers 30 graduates a 24-month placement where they gain valuable hands-on work experience, rotating through two different departments. Whilst some of the trainees choose to remain with the business at the end of the programme, others use their experience with DHL to go on to have successful careers both within the sector and in other industries.

Huddersfield University Degree Course

DHL are a founding member of the Novus Trust, an education initiative led by the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport. The Novus Trust has joined forces with Huddersfield University to create an enhanced four-year Logistics and Supply Chain Degree course, which began as a pilot in September 2013.

The course is expected to attract the highest calibre of students who are serious about pursuing a career in the delivery/supply chain industry. One feature that is likely to prove extremely attractive is that successful graduates are guaranteed a job with a Novus Trust member company on completion of the course (providing they meet the qualifying criteria). DHL will be welcoming its first graduate in the summer of 2017.

“I’d worked in distribution before I started University. Deciding on my career I knew I enjoyed the business and that DHL were the

biggest company in the field. From the start with DHL it was

obvious they could offer a wealth of different opportunities.”

Natalie, Operations.

Apprenticeships at DHL

Apprenticeships are an excellent way of reducing youth unemployment, offering a combination of on-the-job training and support with career prospects and a regular salary to help attract and retain young people in the logistics industry.

DHL believes that modern high-quality apprenticeships are of significant value to both the apprentice and the employer, and should play a key role in helping to tackle unemployment among the under-25s. Across our UK workforce we now support more than 250 apprenticeships and we are confident that we will be able to continue to increase this number in the years ahead.

* The Prince’s Trust, 2014

The Prince’s Trust

Around one in five young people in the UK are not in work, education or training. Youth unemployment costs the UK economy £10 million a day in lost productivity, while youth crime costs £1 billion every year. Worryingly more than 430,000 young people are facing long-term unemployment*.

To help overcome these challenges, the DHL UK Foundation and DHL work with The Prince’s Trust, a youth charity that helps change the lives of vulnerable young people providing the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work.

Get Into:The ‘Get Into’ programme is a two to four week course that helps young people between the ages of 18 and 25 get back into employment where participants learn different skills and roles working in logistics.

This intensive training imparts job skills, motivation and confidence, breaking the cycle of young people unable to secure work as they have no experience, and are unable to gain experience as they have no work. Where possible, there is also an opportunity for participants to attend an interview for a permanent position at the end of the programme.

Adopt a team:The Team programme is a 12 week, full-time personal development programme which gives participants a chance to complete a community based project, work experience, intensive team building and a Team challenge, allowing them to achieve a recognised accreditation in an informal environment. DHL supports with work placements and also by joining the young people on their Team Challenge.

Outward Bound

The DHL UK Foundation and DHL also work in partnership with The Outward Bound Trust, an educational charity and the UK’s leading provider of bursary-assisted outdoor learning. The aim of this partnership is to provide programmes to help young people realise their potential through learning in the wild, also giving them the opportunity to raise self-esteem, self-confidence, develop new skills and raise their aspirations;

First - a pilot project working across the entire first year of a single secondary school to raise individual’s aspirations and self-confidence and also lay foundations of team work and communication.

Forward - Working with students’ midway through their school career with the aim to help them move forward with their lives, to widen their horizons and show what they are truly capable of.

Future - a pilot programme working with older pupils from a single school who face challenges in life and future employment due to their social and financial circumstances, providing them with the skills, attitude and behaviours for successful future employment and training, while strengthening the link between the local school and DHL.

As part of these programmes DHL employees participate as mentors and positive role models, and together with The Outward Bound Trust, create a supportive and challenging environment in which young people can learn about themselves and see clearly, perhaps for the first time, what they might truly be capable of achieving in life.

Opportunities for all

In the broader area of employability, led by DHL HR we operate programmes targeted at creating opportunities for all individuals who are looking to change their lives or careers.

Supporting Service Personnel

DHL has signed a Corporate Covenant to outline its support for service personnel. The Covenant contains a number of pledges of practical support and includes working with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) and the Recovery Career Service (RCS) to provide Service Leavers with transport & logistics training and employment opportunities.

These training initiatives are designed to make the transition to civilian life easier by equipping the service leaver with the skills required for a fulfilling career in the logistics industry. Specific programmes include;

• Military Employability Programme - A 4-week employability programme that provides specific vocational skills. On successful completion of the course, permanent full-time driver jobs will then be available with DHL.

• Civilian Work Attachments (CWA) – The CWA provides Service Leavers going through the re-settlement process an opportunity to understand the civilian working environment in order that they can select the best career for them

DHL is proud to support the reservists it employs. As such it has a “Best in Class” employment policy for reservists, and encourages local operations to work closely with reserve units to share knowledge.

Rehabilitation

For a number of years DHL Supply Chain has worked in partnership with customers and the Ministry of Justice to offer training, workplace opportunities and employment to offenders, as well as providing skills and training through paid employment to offenders whilst still in prison. For some, this provides the opportunity to complete nationally recognised employer-driven qualifications, and for others it is the chance to be given work experience as a means of trying to increase employment possibilities upon release from prison.

As part of our CR strategy, we actively encourage our employees to make a positive impact in their local communities by investing their time through volunteering or fundraising.

Community Heroes

Celebrating the very best of DHL, the annual Community Heroes Awards recognise the outstanding work employees have given through volunteering and fundraising. Individuals and groups across the business are invited to apply for their particular category, with successful applicants receiving an award along with a donation to their chosen charity / organisation; in 2014, a total of £11,100 was donated.

Match It!

Match It! is run by the DHL UK Foundation and provides employees with an opportunity to have their fundraising efforts boosted for charities, schools and not for profit community organisations. For those who prefer to volunteer their time on a regular basis, current employees can apply to have their volunteering time matched as a donation in recognition of their commitment.

Transform It!

Transform It! was launched by the DHL UK Foundation in 2012 in direct response to employees who wanted to provide more active support to their local community groups.

Aiming to change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people, Transform It! grants from £5,000 to £10,000 are available for DHL employees to initiate and develop projects to make physical improvements to local community facilities. Recent successfully completed projects include refurbished scout halls, sports facilities, children’s play areas, and school gardens.

ENGAGEMENT

“Total of £3,085,273 donated to charities

through MatchIt! since April 2010”

“£407,711 donated to Transform It! projects since launch in 2012”

In addition to the activities that form part of the UK’s three strategic focus areas, our business supports other programmes to further leverage our expertise;

Free of Charge Shipments

DHL works closely with charities on an ad hoc basis to deliver supplies to parts of the world that are most vulnerable. These deliveries can be supporting something as simple as bringing a child a toy, to delivering life-saving equipment. We have various criteria in place to ensure we are supporting our CR strategy as well as supporting local charities.

Conservation

From time to time, we use our core capabilities to help with disasters and also special projects. DHL uses its expertise in the fast and efficient movement of valuable freight to move endangered animals to try to ensure the long-term survival of these species.

Recent journeys completed have included:

• The transportation of three endangered black rhinos from Port Lympne, Kent to Tanzania, Africa, in partnership with The Aspinall Foundation

• The transportation of two Sumatran tigers, one female from Perth, Australia and one male from Cleveland, USA to ZSL London Zoo as part of an endangered breeding programme

• The transportation of nine silverback gorillas from Port Lympne, Kent to Gabon, Africa, in partnership with The Aspinall Foundation

OTHER CR ACTIVITIES

WE DAY MAKING A DIFFERENCE: COLLABORATIVE CR ACROSS DHL

Free The Children is an international charity and educational partner, with more than 2.3 million young people involved in innovative education and development programmes worldwide. Each year across North America and the UK, Free The Children hosts We Day, their signature youth empowerment event which celebrates the difference young people are making in their local and global communities.

Supporting the UK event, DHL engaged Corporate Responsibility champions and colleagues across DHL to provide shipping and logistical support before, during and after the event in addition to packing and distributing 12,000 gift bags for the young people attending.

Partnering with Free The Children

As a global business operating across many countries and markets, there is a natural fit to partnering a global event that aligns to DHL’s Go Help, Go Teach and Go Green pillars within the Corporate Responsibility agenda. DHL’s divisions in the UK support a large number of local projects but wanted one partnership utilising each division’s capabilities and support employee volunteering.

We Day

We Day is tied to the year-long We Act programme, which offers free educational resources, student-led campaigns and support materials to help turn the event’s inspiration into sustained action. Together We Day and We Act provide a blueprint to raise a generation of active global citizens. We Day brings together thousands of young people from hundreds of primary and secondary schools. Thanks to the generous support of sponsors the event is free to attend, but students must earn their ticket through service by making a commitment to take action on at least one local and one global initiative of their choice as part of the We Act programme.

DHL UK involvement

We Day harnesses the energy and passion of young change-makers to show young people that they are not alone in their journey to make a difference. With a global footprint, resources, expertise and our own commitment to community and volunteering, DHL partnered with the event for the first time in the UK in 2014. It is a truly collaborative partnership in the UK with all divisions providing volunteers and offering value-in-kind services:

• DHL Global Forwarding – Inbound journey from Canada to UK

• DHL Freight – All UK transport for the goods and warehouse storage

• DHL Supply Chain – Warehouse storage

• DHL Express – Warehouse storage and the return journey from UK to Seattle

We Day UK has been widely supported by all divisions and CEOs across the business in the UK, with over 200 employees showing their support by volunteering with gift bag packing days, acting as stewards or attending on the day. A fantastic response from DHL employees and their families resulted in over 1,190 volunteer hours being delivered by DHL employees, demonstrating the tremendous impact an organisation of our size can achieve when individuals are highly engaged.

Employee motivation

“ For me, the messages were both inspiring and soul assuring. To watch 12,000 children react to messages of hope, to see some of the world’s popular musical artists supporting the message of change, was an absolute pleasure to be part of.”

“ Had a fab time on Friday, been totally on a high since and I really want to get more involved in this sort of thing.”

“ I just wanted to say a massive thank you for letting me be a part of We Day. I don’t think I have ever been so inspired, and I am still buzzing now.”

“ Thank you for providing me with this opportunity, I didn’t think it was going to be as rewarding as it was.”

“The inaugural We Day UK simply would not have been possible without the incredible support of our logistics partner DHL. From shipping the We Day stage across the Atlantic Ocean

to kitting 12,000 gift bags, DHL’s generosity ensured that the first We Day UK was a huge success. We particularly

enjoyed meeting so many DHL employees; over 100 staff graciously gave up their time to volunteer for

We Day. We are absolutely thrilled to be expanding the DHL and Free The

Children partnership in the UK and look forward to an exciting future together.”

“The partnership with Free The Children has brought together all divisions within DHL UK, helping to support social change across the globe, as

well as offering various opportunities to our employees. The response from the business has been overwhelming, with hundreds of employees and their families choosing to get involved to help and support the success of the

charity. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Free The Children and seeing the long term impacts that the charity has across the world from

encouraging young people.”
