The idea of a gas film to protect surfaces

is billions of years old.

Compressors are high-speed machines whose trouble

free reliability constitutes a major precondition for

numerous process engineering operations. Where the

satisfaction of our customers is concerned, we bet on

the creativity of our employees, the flexibility of our

production and the quality of our seals. And to keep on

improving our seals and adapting them even better to

your individual requirements our specialists are

constantly involved in the development of new,

innovative ideas. A case in point is the EagleBurgmann

Dry Gas Seal, which with an array of technical features

is setting new standards for compressor seals. Be it in

the three-dimensional gas grooves or the high-loading

elastomer-free secondary seals - all features of the

Burgmann Dry Gas Seal were developed for optimal

effectiveness so that your compressor runs smoothly

and the environment is safely protected.

Gas-lubricated mechanical seals of the DGS

series were developed especially for sealing

turbo compressors. They are distinguished

by broad sliding faces and three-dimensio-

nal U or V grooves in the rotating seat. The

combination of face materials used in these

seals is silicon carbide against silicon carbi-

de with a diamond-like carbon coating fea-

turing excellent emergency running pro-

perties. The DGS offers a range of technical

and economical advantages: low operating

costs, a low level of power consumption,

high safety in operation and long service li-

fe, low leakage rates, no oil contamination

of the product and, last but not least, an in-

crease of the compressor's efficiency.

Burgmann DGS are distinguished by their broad sliding

faces with aerodynamic three-dimensional U and V

grooves which ensure contact-free, trouble-free running

without pressurization even at low speeds, e.g. in

slow-roll mode. The oblique groove bottom developed by

Burgmann is responsible for maintaining the all-

important stability of the gas film. Reproducibility of

groove production to the exact depth is guaranteed by a

purpose-developed manufacturing process. It is quality

features like this which lay the foundation for the

exceptional stability of the gas film on the Burgmann

DGS and hence for the reliable operation of your

compressor. A further important role is played by the

rotating masses within the seal. With this in mind,

Burgmann opted for light-weight silicon carbide and of

course a ceramic-compatible design.

The V-grooves convey the gas by a rotary

movement between the sliding faces. The re-

sulting pressure rise causes the seal faces

to lift off and ensures contact-free operati-

on. V-grooves are dependant on the direc-

tion of rotation (uni-directional).

• Self-cleaning effect trough a

progressive groove bottom

• Variable depth of groove to

effect gas film stability

Silicon carbide with DLC finish.

Thermal conductivity, a higher modulus of

elasticy and good resistance to deformation

are crucial factors when choosing the face

materials. At the same time it has to be re-

membered that rotating masses inside the

seal have an effect on rotor dynamics. Light-

weight silicon carbide is therefore the ideal

face material.

• Sliding faces with diamond-like carbon

coating (DLC)

• Ceramic-compatible design: friction-

locked torque transmission, no stress-

increasing forming operations

• Low centrifugal forces

• Simple centering

and low temperature.

E A G L E B U R G M A N N D R Y G A S S E A L S

The outstanding characteristics of the elastomer-free

PDGS is its innovative design combined with a special

PTFE compound for the secondary seals. The secondary

sealing elements specially developed by Burgmann for

this purpose are particularly effective in terms of

automatic alignment and resistance to extrusion,

temperature and chemicals. The operational reliability of

the PDGS is accordingly very high, with stable leakage

rates guaranteed throughout the operating range.

• No explosive decompression

• Controlled sliding forces prevent "hang-up" of the

dynamic secondary seal; the back-up ring and

balancing sleeve are made of tungsten carbide

• Materials in compliance with NACE

• Optimized aerodynamic gas grooves ensure maximal

stability of the gas film

• Diamond-coated sliding faces

• Friction-locked torque transmission of the rotating seat

Liquefication and transport of natural gas

and as well as gas-reinjection in the oil production

process under control.

E A G L E B U R G M A N N D R Y G A S S E A L S

Besides the conventional method of transporting natural

gas via pipelines, an ever increasingly used form of

conveyance and storage is by way of tanks – above all

where the supply of islands or the construction of a

pipeline is not possible or economically viable. In such

instances, natural gas is liquefied by refrigeration (LNG)

– in the process of which its volume is reduced to

around 1 /600th of its original level

– and pumped onto tankers for transport.

applications. This seal with 355 mm

(13,97") shaft diameter is the largest ever

built by EagleBurgmann for mixer refrige-

rant, nitrogen refrigerant and propane com-

pressors. The PDGS was subject to extensi-

ve theoretical and experimental evaluation

to ensure the integrity of the design. The se-

al has an outer diameter of about 650 mm

(25,59") and a weight of about 150 kg (331

Gas reinjection

In the production of crude oil, gas from a

neighbouring gas field is pumped into the

formation by means of compressors with

pressure levels of up to 760 bar (11,023

PSI) for the purposes of forcing the oil up to

the surface. The pressures of up to over 400

bar (5,802 PSI) acting on the compressor

seal are reduced by way of a pressure sta-

ge. Further demands made on the seal come

in the form of the cooling caused by the gas

relaxation as well as the high content of H2S

in the gas.

PDGS increases efficiency in

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)

Particularly high demands are made on the

sealing technology in the gas liquefaction

process in the form of large shaft diameters

of up to 350 mm (13,97") for correspon-

dingly large compressors and the enormous

temperature differences up to 250 °C (in a

range of –110 to +150 °C).

In case of transport of LNG on tankers the

natural gas evaporates continously in spite

of well insulated tanks. This gas used to be

shed and used to power the ship, but nowa-

days it is reliquefied. The PDGS units on the

compressors and expanders used to this end

are exposed to temperatures of up to

minus 170 °C (–274 °F). Burgmann’s PDGS

seals have been ensuring the environmental-

ly sound, efficient and safe transport of li-

quefied natural gas on such tankers since

2001 .

PDGS qualified for LNG processes at leading

compressor manufacturers and operators.

single seal

Application: Where product leakages to the

atmosphere are recognized as safe, e.g. with

air, nitrogen or CO2 compressors.

Labyrinth to the gas side and CSR radial clea-

rance seal to the bearing side are optional.

This version is used as an emission-free ar-

rangement with a corresponding flare/vent

connection.

Primary leakage is then discharged with the

separating gas to the flare/vent.

In the case of dirty gases the gas to be sea-

led has to be filtered in addition and convey-

ed to the seal chamber via connection "A".

The resulting current from the sealing com-

partment prevents impurities reaching the

seal.

DGS

tandem seal

Application: Where small product leakages of

process gas are admissible, e.g. on gas pipe-

line compressors. Seal on the atmosphere si-

de acting as a safety seal. The tandem arran-

gement provides a particularly high degree of

operational safety.

The seal on the product side and the seal on

the atmosphere side are able to absorb the

complete pressure differential. Under normal

operating conditions the full pressure is re-

duced only by the seal on the product side.

The space between the seal on the product

side and the seal on the atmosphere side is

cleared by a connection "B" to the flare. The

pressure differential to be sealed by the seal

on the atmosphere side equals the flare pres-

sure, so the leakage to the atmosphere side

or to the vent is very low. If the main seal

fails, the second seal acts as a safety seal.

tandem seal with

intermediate labyrinth

Application: Where product leakages to the

atmosphere as well as buffer gas leakages to

the product are inadmissible, e.g. on H2,

ethylene or propylene compressors.

With this version the product pressure to be

sealed is reduced via the seal on the product

side. The entire process gas leakage is

discharged via connection "B" to the flare.

The seal on the atmosphere side is pressuri-

zed with buffer gas (nitrogen) via connection

"C". The pressure of the buffer gas ensures

that a current flows via the labyrinth to the

flare outlet.

DGS

double seal

Application: Where product leakages to the

atmosphere are inadmissible and tandem ar-

rangements are not suitable because of too

small product gas pressures. Buffer gas lea-

kages into the product must be admissible

(buffer pressure p3 > p1).

This seal is used when a neutral buffer gas of

suitable pressure is available but no flare.

Typical applications are to be found mainly in

the chemical industry, e.g. on HC gas com-

pressors.

A buffer gas, e.g. nitrogen, is fed between

the seals via connection "C" at a higher pres-

sure than the product pressure. One part of

the buffer gas leakage escapes to the atmo-

sphere side and the other part to the product.

The MDGS – our answer to heavy duty

operating conditions with

shocks and vibrations.

E A G L E B U R G M A N N D R Y G A S S E A L S

EagleBurgmann MDGS is a gas-lubricated mechanical

seal, which is optimal for the sealing of high-speed

geared compressors and screw compressors which

require tight installation spaces and vibration resistance.

A face material combination of metal for the rotary ring

and carbon graphite for the stationary ring makes the

MDGS extremely insensitive to axial shocks.

Even a temporary contact between the seal faces is

no risk.

Outstanding features

The most significant differences between

the MDGS and Burgmann’s DGS series of

service-proven gas seals are to be found in

the choice of material and the design of the

seal faces. Most particularly, titanium nitri-

de coating by the dynamic ion beam mixing

method (DM-TiN) is applied to the sealing

surfaces of the metallic mating ring

(Standard: 1 .4006/SU410). DM-TiN film

made by this method has superior micro

hardness and adhesion to film coated by

other processes. (Japan pat. no. 2134661).

What makes this coating so special, howe-

ver, is that it is not only applied to the sur-

face. Rather, a special process helps the

coating material to penetrate far into the

metal, thus creating an intensive bond that

withstands even the highest mechanical and

thermal loads. In addition, friction coeffi-

cient of DM-TiN against carbon graphite is

low, which enables the MDGS to exhibit ex-

cellent sliding characteristics even in dry

contact situations observed at start and stop

during turning respectively slow roll operati-

ons.

Capable and versatile

The MDGS is the ideal seal up to 50 bar a

(725 PSI) for geared compressors and

screw compressors. It can be configured as

a single, double and tandem seal (with or

without an internal labyrinth). Combinations

with an inboard labyrinth or a carbon ring

throttle and service-proven bearing seals

are possible. As a component seal the MDGS

is also a cost-efficient alternative for a

distinctly higher level of efficiency, for ex-

ample compared to labyrinths, radial carbon

ring seals and brush seals for air compres-

sors.

Cold start-up or hot operation –

our radial clearance seals perform lowest leakage rates.

Our radial clearance seals, the aerodynamic CSR and the

aerostatic CSE, are genuine alternatives to labyrinth

seals and some shaft seals. Their main advantages

include low gas consumption and leakage rates which

are up to 90% lower than labyrinth seals. The seals are

ideal for extreme operating conditions, and they are very

compact. The heavy-duty segmented carbon graphite ring

is held by a circular spring. These non-contact seals are

wear-free. They feature excellent running characteristics

in emergency conditions, for example when the machine

has to be shut down due to a malfunction, and the

hardened facings made of materials like tungsten

carbide provide good wear resistance during start/stop

operation. The CSR and CSE are supplied as cartridge

units which are ready for installation.

SMS Seal Management System

Today, more than 80 % of all process machi-

nes in turbo compressor construction are

equipped with gas seal systems comprising

a gas-lubricated seal and a control system.

The seal is buffered with clean and dry flus-

hing/buffer gas to ensure reliable operation.

Volumes of leaking gas are monitored, and

discharged in a controlled manner. The

System can be adapted individually accor-

ding to the operating conditions and the sa-

fety requirements of the application.

The SMS performs the following functions:

• Clean gas module:

Supply of flushing gas

• Buffer gas module:

Supply of buffer gas (N2)

• Leakage module:

Monitoring of leakage

• Separation gas module:

Supply of separation gas (N2 or air)

Monitoring of buffer seal

Operating principle

To prevent soiling of the sliding faces, gas is

drawn from a higher pressure stage of the

compressor, is filtered and injected onto the

gas seal as clean "flushing gas". The leaka-

ge from the first gas seal stage is dischar-

ged to the flare for disposal. To prevent bea-

ring oil from contaminating the gas seal, a

further nitrogen or air buffer ("separating

gas") is provided between the bearing and

the gas seal.
