Program planning with VELS
Curriculum planning in Health and Physical Education needs to be part of total school planning.
Questions to consider:
Which faculties/classroom/specialist teachers have responsibility for student learning in domains such as Interpersonal Development, Personal Learning, Communication and Thinking Processes?
Is the domain of Information Communications Technology being treated a separate subject or is it being integrated through all domains?
ACHPER
The standards and learning focus statements
The standards are the basis for curriculum
planning
- essential learning
- assessment
- reporting
The learning focus statements suggest teaching
and learning activities
ACHPER
• Learning is continuous and connected.
• Sequence of learning builds on earlier work.
• The content and processes increase in
complexity and challenge for students.
• Students should be able to make
connections with earlier work.
Sequence of Learning
To educate students in a more holistic
way by purposefully teaching the
relationships and interactions between
different domains and applying to real
life situations.
Why link HPE to other domains?
Planning units of work - an option to consider
Backwards curriculum design
1. Decide on unit focus
2. What knowledge, skills and behaviours do you want your students to be able to demonstrate at the end of this unit, subject or program?
3. What elements of the standards will be addressed by this unit, subject or program?
4. Decide on evidence of learning
5. Plan assessment activities
6. Plan teaching and learning activities
enable students to progress towards the standards
cater for a range of learning styles
promote deep understanding of the concepts being taught
7. Plan for effective feedback
8. Plan to evaluate the unit

Domain Dimension Key Elements of Standards
Students:
Health & Physical
Education
Movement & Physical
Activity
Students refine basic and complex motor
skills and apply these skills in increasingly
complex games and activities.
Students effectively use strategic thinking
and work with more and less skilled peers to
improve game performance.
Interpersonal
Development
Working in Teams Students work effectively in different teams
and take on a variety of roles to complete
tasks of varying length and complexity.
Students provide feedback to others and
evaluate their own and the teams
performance.
Personal Learning Managing Personal
Learning
Students persist when experiencing difficulty
with learning tasks.

Assessment FOR learning
occurs when teachers use
inferences about student
progress to inform their
teaching.
Assessment AS learning
occurs when students reflect
on and monitor their progress
to inform their future learning
goals.
Assessment OF learning
occurs when teachers use
evidence of student learning to
make judgements on student
achievement against goals and
standards.

WORKING FROM THE VICTORIAN ESSENTIAL LEARNING STANDARDS TO DEVELOP A UNIT OF WORK
Title: ____________________________________________________ Year Level: _________________ VELS Level:__________________
This unit makes a contribution to students achieving a range of VELS
(Teachers need to be aware that these standards should be reassessed in different contexts several times)
