•
Success Criteria
SDP - more likely to be successful if goals are
1. well-planned (Long – Medium – Short Term);
2. focused (only ONE major concern);
3. built on strength;
• 07-08 Caring, Active & Responsible Learner
• 08-09 Care to Learn; Learn to Care
• 09-10 Care to Learn; Learn to Inquire
• 10-11 Care to Learn; Care to Reflect
• 11-12 Building on Strength
•
Success Criteria
SDP - more likely to be successful if goals are
4.ready to Stop / Sustain / Improve;
5.whole-school approach;
• School Goal Committee -> School Executive Committee -> Middle Managers -> Full Staff -> Students -> Janitors
Whole-School Approach
• Subjects / Committees - Designing their major concern related to the School Goal
• Teachers - Sharing by Principal and Teachers after exchange tours
• Classes - Setting up their own class goals
• Students - Sharing of students’ exposure / service projects
• Janitors - Writing their own goal of the year
English Department - Annual Plan (2010-11)
• Major Concerns :
– Successful implementation of NSS
– Strengthen students’ ability to reflect on their work
– Continue efforts to increase students’ exposure to the language
• Intended outcomes/targets :
1. Use and evaluation of NSS Popular Culture elective materials
2. Students have more chances to reflect on their work and
progress
3. Students have balanced exposure and use of the language
Strategies / Tasks
e.g. Classes to set their own goal and
action plan
Success Criteria
SDP - more likely to be successful if goals are
6.adopted using a bottom-up approach while Subjects and Departments can exercise their professional judgment and autonomy to be in-line with School Goal
7.reinforced and shared periodically
Difficulties
1. Takes time and patience to generate consensus and lobbying staff.
2. Need to train new staff to sustain programmes.
3. Proactive staff may be over-loaded.

– ECA & Student Activities
ECA and Student Activities Self-Reflection can only occur if:
•Students have: – Ownership
– Autonomy
•School /Teachers provide: – Quality experience to students
– Platforms for students to practise
– A sustainable culture - Cross-years experience sharing
Student Leaders 1. Participation by choice
2. Quality training : Team building; Framing and Debriefing
3. Platform to practice: Risk Management
4. Role of teachers: observer, cheering team leader and gate-keeper
5. Reporting & reflection: Report, sharing, AGM, Appraisal
6. Train the trainer: experience across generations
Individual students
• Participation by choice: ECA Point System
• Quality input: Outward Bound
• Platform to try: Students’ Day
• Recording: SLP; Choosing Self-reported data
• Reflection: Sharing booklet, Writing Self-account
ECA Point System
Participation by choice
• Choose within limit
• No minimum points
• Student’s input while cutting
Quality input: Outward Bound School for S4 students
• Participation by choice: ECA Point System
• Quality input: Outward Bound
• Platform to try: Students’ Day
• Recording: SLP; Choosing Self-reported data
• Reflection: Sharing booklet, Writing Self-account
Individual students
Challenges/difficulties
• Struggle between the outcome and the process, so let go!
• Dilemma between urgent (event) and important (train the trainer, nurture the culture, quality input) things, so sharpen the saw!
• It takes time to change, so be patient!
• A balanced input: outsourced or internal resources

students learn?
How should students
learn & teachers teach?
How can we know students
have learned?

Learning & Teaching
The
CPA
loop
Students encouraged to reflect on their learning through assignments, such as project work and journal writing (reading journal)
All students completed oral and written work related to reflection.
Students show more awareness of importance to reflect on their performance.
Learning and Teaching
They made summaries of the learning as reviews of
what they had acquired in the lesson. Their sharing
in class did not only give them more speaking and
listening practice but also provided information to
teachers to make adjustments to their teaching.

Extracts from Annual Reports
S3 Language Arts - LAT
In today's Language Arts lesson, I have
learnt more about the poetic skill of
personification. Besides, I have also had a
revision on similes and metaphors. In addition, I
have got to know more about analyzing the
pattern of a poem. I think these techniques are
not only useful in reading or writing poems, but
are useful to make other types of writing like
letters or stories, more interesting and literary as
well.
S3 Language Arts - LAT
I have learnt many names of animals, such as
parasitic wasp, gorilla, chimpanzee, leopard and
so on, and also some interesting facts about
them which I have never heard of before.
Moreover, I have learnt some new words and
phrases like ewe, robe, embrace, to sniff out,
equivalent to and capable of doing something.
These words and phrases can make speaking
or writing more realistic and lifelike.
S3 Language Arts - LAT
In the coming lessons, I hope to learn more
about animals so that I can increase my
knowledge about the nature. I wish to learn
more new phrases and expressions so as to
improve my speaking and writing to a more vivid
and literary state. I wish to be able to express
meanings in more different ways so that my
speeches and writings will be more interesting
and rich in the range of vocabulary used.
Thank you Mandy for writing your reflection to me. I
hope you can still manage to follow the lessons, as
sometimes I might be conducting the lessons at a
rather fast pace. Please let me know whether you
would like me to explain thoroughly. Just feel free.
How do you find the lessons we had these weeks?
Without referring to the text, do you understand how
to analyze the writer’s style in the story? Come and
let me know if you have any queries.
Feedback from Teacher

Collaborative Lesson Preparation
Learning and Teaching
Collaborative lesson preparation (CLP) sharing sessions are held by different departments throughout the year to promote professional dialogue among colleagues.
Difficulties
The writing of self reflection is time consuming, cannot be carried frequently in lesson.
Not easy to arrange common free periods for Collaborative Lesson Preparation.
Teachers need to give feedback to students which would increase the workload of teachers.

From an S6 graduate 20 August 2012
Being a 2012 S6 graduate, I am writing to extend my
heartfelt thanks to Ying Wa.
I might seem an anonymous student at school and
had few outstanding ECA or academic
records. However, deep down my heart, I am very
grateful that the school has always provided us a safe
haven and hub for learning. Not only did Ying Wa
teach us how to excel in academics, but also how to
be a graceful lady……
Apart from the exceptional teachers I encountered
in Ying Wa, I have also made best friends here
whom I share my joy and sorrow with.
Ying Wa has taught me invaluable lessons in how to
live a bright and beautiful life. I sincerely hope that
the tradition of assemblies and speeches can be
passed on for generations. Sometimes you won’t
know how influential a speech or an assembly can
be until we rewind our life.
Enclosed please find my insignificant donation to the
school’s redevelopment project as a token of thanks
to the priceless years in Ying Wa. The money is
actually my first ever salary (to be precise, my
allowance) to the internship I had this summer. I
wish every success of Ying Wa and I will pray for a
wonderful new campus for my “師妹”.
I had never imagined how significant and influential
Ying Wa would be until after graduation. The
feelings are indescribable in words.
Dear Mrs. Lee,
I still remember the assemblies last year when
you shared with us your agony and worries
about the redevelopment project. It is hard to
imagine that we’re in this decanting campus now.
Time really flies. Students now may not thank
you for what you did but I’m sure those in the
future would thank you for your effort and
energy put in this project that benefits them as if
I thank Miss Davies for coming to Hong Kong
years before. It will worth it. Mrs. Lee, thank you!
