CfE Review ‘Many schools were very successful in providing their pupils with out-of-class activities and opportunities for personal achievement and some had developed very effective systems to record and track these’ (page 14)
80% of P4-S3 pupils took part in out-of-class activities
89% of P4-S3 pupils agreed that their school was good at recognising personal achievements
96% of staff agreed that their school had successful arrangements in place to recognise and track the personal achievements of learners

Taking Part in out of school activities at age 11
Main Findings – For all children Participation in sport/physical activities associated with higher
attainment and better social, emotional and behavioural outcomes at age 11 Higher attainment at age 11 also associated with:
– Being active informally several times a week at age 7 – Participation in ‘other clubs’ at 7 – Reading for enjoyment and hours per week on homework
Helping with household chores was associated with higher attainment outcomes
No link in terms of outcomes at any age with gaming, no link with TV at age 11
Disadvantaged Children – What activities made a difference?
Participation in after schools clubs the only activity related to improved outcomes at age 11 for disadvantaged pupils
School based clubs: • Free or low cost • Convenient • Familiar
