their hands tied.

Facts

“A camp inside a garrison” is the simplest practical picture of how Camp Ashraf is encircled by rings after rings of Iraqi Military and security forces since 2009 in a planned operation to cut all the relations and interactions of the residents with the outside world.

1. From 2009 when protection of Camp Ashraf was transferred from US forces to the Iraqi forces, the camp was placed under a complete siege by the Iraqi army and police forces. Currently, a Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) unit of the Diyala police is stationed, placing the camp under siege consisting of two rings of military formations. The first ring is stationed outside Ashraf’s current security fence and inside the camp, parallel to the main east-west ‘Street 100’. Control over this road was seized during the 8 April 2011 attack by the Iraqi army and forces against the residents.

2. On the northern side of Camp Ashraf, an RDF company of Iraqi police is in charge of controlling the area using watch-posts on the berm along Street 100. This berm was the main avenue of the approach employed by the security forces. As seen in the photo, there are RDF police watch post all along the berm, making it impossible to cross without prior coordination with the Police Command.

Relative Distance of first line of Iraq Army and Police is only at 50 meters distance from residential quarters, with main Command and Control HQ like 19 Brigade of 5

3. Above all The 19th Brigade of the Diyala 5th Division is stationed at the former US forces base (FOB Grizzly), only at 1000 m distance from the Residents compound and the scene of Sept. 1st Attack.

4. Police and RDF units control Tulips Square. This square was the residents’ entrance-exit gate for transferring their loads and … These forces also control the Lions Gate, which has been Ashraf’s main gate, and from 2009 to this day has been under full control of Iraqi forces. Opening this passage was crucial at the time of retreat since it was the only vehicle outlet

Police and RDF units control Tulips Square. The constructed berm alongside the St. 100 has blocked every exit point and this square was the residents’ entrance-exit gate for transferring their loads. This gate was also used by the assailants on the morning of the incident. Later, the 7 abducted residents and their captors passed this gate.
