Foreword

Come and discover the thrill of Zambia for yourself

For wildlife, adventure and culture, Zambia is one of the most unspoilt

destinations in Africa, just waiting to be discovered.

Livingstone, together with Victoria Falls, has developed into a comprehensive resort destina-tion with some of the most exciting extreme adventure sports anywhere in the world. From white water rafting to bungee jumping and from walking with lions to the elegance and sophistication of dinner on a steam train trav-elling through the African bush, Livingstone

offers a range of thrilling experiences and chal-lenges. There is something to suit every budget in Livingstone.

wildlife

The wildlife of Zambia is truly wonderful. The country has many areas of unspoilt beauty, from the Luangwa Valley and the Lower Zambezi to the Kafue National Park, one of the world’s largest national parks. It is quite common for visitors to go on safari and not see another person or vehicle, thus allowing them to experience nature at its best.

culture

Culture is everywhere in Zambia. No visi-tors should miss the opportunity to visit a traditional village and taste the local food of Zambia. There are many traditional ceremo-nies throughout the year in various parts of Zambia including such amazing experiences as the Kuomboka in the Western Province.

Foreword

Warm, safe and friendly, Zambia is a fabulous destination just waiting to be discovered. Your visit will be truly awesome – one you will never forget.

We look forward to seeing you.

Mark O’DonnellChairman, Tourism Council of Zambia

Welcome to the Third Edition of Destination Zambia.

As Chairman of the Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB), it is a distinct honour to have this opportunity to give you a glimpse into a Zambia that I am quite sure will surprise and delight you.

In the past, Zambia’s tourism offering has been centred on The Victoria Falls – the Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘The Smoke that Thun-ders’ in one of our local languages – and its fascinating draw for the local visitor, the international tourist and, of course, the adventurer. This historical focus on

the Victoria Falls has, to a large extent, limited the delightful choices available for tourists who would consider Zambia when making their choice for a memo-rable holiday experience.

unique

On the other hand, despite offering one of the Seven Wonders of the World, our tourism sector remains largely underde-veloped, both in the role it plays as part of our economic growth trajectory, and in the positioning of Zambia on the list of destination choices in the world.

At the ZTB, our goal for the years ahead is to create a significant shift in the role of tourism in our national and economic development; and in the unique and quality experiences that await our visitors to Zambia. We believe these unsurpass-able experiences are what will build momentum for our tourism industry as visitors enjoy and live ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences; and are drawn to what lies beneath the surface into the many

treasures that this amazing country has to offer.

My desire, therefore, with this intro-duction for ‘Destination Zambia’ is to reintroduce our country to you and give you a glimpse into our offerings which you might not have been privy to in the past Zambia indeed has been ‘the world’s best kept secret’.

Breathtaking

With a dedicated 250,000 sq km of National Parks and Game Management Areas (GMAs), a touch over a third of Zambia’s land mass, the whole country – north to south, east to west – is filled with some of the finest game animals, waterfalls, rivers, inland beaches and landmarks which commemorate our special heritage and history. These sites are simply breathtaking in their natural undisturbed beauty. Our lakes are the sites of some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets that your senses will have the pleasure to experience. Each

place you visit is a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature and has the capacity to leave you in awe, inspired and rejuvenated – wanting more.

Zambia is a holiday destination for all seasons. This is especially important for those seeking a holiday outside of the typical peak travel periods, away from the beaten track, and packaged to suit varying and demanding tastes.

Experience

Those appreciative and discerning tastes are accommodated each season in our triangles of tourism. These pockets, spread throughout the country, all offer an eclectic mix of sites to visit, activi-ties, sounds and interactions with our communities in warm and friendly settings. These areas once again provide our visitors with an all-round experi-ence that is really special, Zambian and unforgettable; and will have you coming again to explore for more. As our local folklore states: ‘He or she that drinks from

the River Zambezi, must come again and again to drink.’ You could visit Zambia on every one of your holidays for the rest of your life and still have a different yet equally memorable experience each time you did.

The Kasaba Bay/ South Luangwa Triangle:

The journey for our visitor could begin with experiencing rare sightings of the shoebill stork in the Bangweulu Swamps; the fruit bat migrations in November and the sitatunga sightings in the Kasanka National Park. The scuba diving in the amethyst crystal aqua marine of Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest lakes in the world is a must for rare sightings of beautiful tropical fish. Lie and sunbathe in seemingly endless stretches of sun stroked and soft water lapped beaches of both Lake Tanganyika and Lake Bang-weulu; experience big game and wild country safaris. The lakes and rivers offer you the opportunity to catch that elusive tiger fish or Nile perch. They also

offer adrenalin-thumping adventures of canoeing in the proximity of big game or for the more daring ones – white water rafting or snorkelling.

Experience the unforgettable, the rare awe-inspiring walking safaris of the great South Luangwa National Park – taking in the sights, sounds, wind and smells of a truly amazing Zambian walking safari experience. Come close to prides of feeding lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, the endemic Thornicroft’s giraffe – what your wildest imagination would not have predicted as possible – a very special learning and therapeutic experience.

Page 11: Destination Zambia 2010-11

Experience and learn about our flora and fauna, animal spoors, the reading and interpretation of signs and sounds of the wild, bush-craft, while on foot in proximity with nature. And, of course, about Zambia’s exhilarating small five – elephant shrew, buffalo weaver, ant lion, rhinoceros beetle and leopard tortoise – quite simply, fascinating and marvellous.

The Kariba/ Lower Zambezi Triangle:

A hop away from Lusaka by air or by road, experience the splendour and spectacle of the world’s second largest man-made lake – stretching for well over 365 km with endless beaches and wild coastline. Game fishing and the tropical sardine spectacle are experiences to behold. Venture across downstream of the dam into the Lower Zambezi – any visitor gets to be humbled by the heart-warming beauty of this paradise – swathed by the Zambezi Escarp-ment on the Zambian side (west) and the Mana Pools Escarpment on the Zimbabwean side (east). The almighty Zambezi River stroking, smacking and meandering beautifully in the valley floor is a natural spectacle next to none.

This exquisite ecological phenomenon is teeming with wild game, sports fishing for the testy Zambezi river dog – the tiger

fish, and canoeing experiences of immense adrenalin-raising proportions. Boating, fishing, paragliding, water skiing, game viewing, bird-watching, the activities are endless. Sit down for sundowners of G&T, or whatever your fancy is, in calm shallow sand-banked pools of water in the middle of the Zambezi, taking in the snorts of buffaloes feeding nearby, the ear-rending laughter and cacophony greet-ings of endless pods of hippos. Watch the true brilliance of crimson sunsets as they lovingly caress the Zambezi escarpment and say good night – you just can’t beat this.

Folklore

Sit around a camp-fire, sparkling embers of warmth and light, favourite beverage in hand, reflect on and relive the day’s experiences, listening to local stories and rich folklore. Allow your senses to soak in the beautiful moon-washed landscapes, swathed by the diamond-like brilliance of the Southern Cross and many other star constellations sparkling high up above in their splendour and majesty. Close your eyes and listen to our inspired symphonies of the night sounds – the tenors of crickets and other insects, the altos of night birds, the sopranos of jackals and African wild-dogs, the distant laughter of hyenas, and the wailing and distressed calls of a kill in the

7

distant bushes, the rambles of the hippos in the swallows in the river and those now roaming and foraging for grass on land, the rolling deep and low baritones of calling prides of lions – near and afar. They simply remind you of who is the ‘boss’. By now, you are truly and utterly satiated with your presence in a very special paradise.

The Victoria Falls Triangle:

Livingstone is increasingly known as the adventure capital of the world. Apart from being home to the mighty Victoria Falls, it offers a myriad of adrenalin-generating activi-ties such as micro-lighting over the Victoria

IntroductionFalls, white-water rafting on world- class rapids on the Zambezi, gorge swings and, ultimately, the bungee jump from the Victoria Falls bridge, one of the deepest natural bungee jumping points. I should also mention that Livingstone offers a good dose of Zambia’s diverse wildlife in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.

For lovers of history the two museums, the National Museum and the Railway Museum, have a rich collection of Zambia’s history dating to Dr Livingstone’s times. For golf enthusiasts, the Livingstone Golf Club offers a golfing challenge as one of the oldest clubs in the region.

The Kafue National Park Triangle:

Kafue is one of the largest national parks in the world, and offers the vast and expansive Busanga Plains of panoramic vistas. It is home to the endemic black lechwe, large antelopes such as eland, kudu, roan and the black sable. The park is patrolled by large groupings of cats that are abundantly provided for with food from the several species of animals. Elephants, buffaloes and other species roam freely and in large numbers. Kafue boasts well over several hundreds of species of mammals, birds and

fish. It is truly a dreamer’s paradise for hot air balloon enthusiasts.

Whichever triangle you choose to visit, we have over the recent past fused elements that will enhance your time with us. From adrenalin filled, to serenely calm, to rustic, our triangles will certainly have something on offer for you, no matter what you desire for your well-earned holiday.

The myriad of options and activities available to our visitor blend together with the warmth of our people to shape your experience of our lovely country, and etch a lasting imprint of fond memories. The development that Zambia has undergone recently also means that our capacity has grown, and our facilities have expanded with modern amenities to cater for both business and leisure needs.

Friendly

All this is on offer in the peaceful and friendly atmosphere that has prevailed in our beautiful country for many years. Visit our villages and communities and you are introduced to the remarkable kaleidoscope that is our culture, and to the unique African Bantu existence that has defied the changes of time – passing knowledge and skills from generation to generation, shaping and binding our nation into a homogenous Zambia, at peace with itself and the world.

INTRODUCTION

9

I invite you once again to get to know Zambia anew if you have visited us already. I urge you to begin enjoying the splendours of our country in its entirety if you are considering a first visit. We look forward to giving you our usual warmest welcome, and to seeing you come back again and again, as we receive you into our wonderful home that is Zambia.

We at the ZTB do what we love. We love what we do. We love Zambia.

Best and Always,

Timothy Mushibwe Chairman, Zambia Tourism Board

Norman Carr Safaris

Five great venues for a special safari experienceKnown as Zambia’s original safari

company, Norman Carr Safaris is based in the South Luangwa National Park, home of the African walking safari. The Luangwa Valley has long been regarded as one of Africa’s finest wildlife reserves. The unspoilt natural beauty and abundant game of the valley make it an ideal destina-tion for an African safari adventure.

The company has five impressive proper-ties, all beautifully designed, providing first-class luxury in unrivalled settings.

Kapani: The largest property in the Norman Carr portfolio, Kapani is the ideal place to begin a safari. Accommoda-tion consists of nine guest cottages and

the property is open throughout the year. Game drives and walks from this lodge

are as good as you will find in any of Zambia’s national parks.

Remote

Luwi: This seasonal bush camp nestles under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon. Owing to its remote location and the few roads in the area, activities centre on walking safaris. This makes Luwi Bush Camp one of the most enthralling camps in Zambia.

Nsolo: Situated on a bend in the Luwi Sand River, which runs through the heart of South Luangwa National Park, Nsolo is an intimate bush camp consisting of four individually designed chalets, each on a raised wooden deck with a high thatched roof and private veranda.

Kakuli: Whether Kakuli is used as a stopover on a walking trail or as a base for

Norman Carr Safaris

21

a more static wildlife safari, the game-viewing and night-drive safaris in this area are spectacular.

Mchenja: The camp comprises four stylishly designed tents, each under its own thatched roof, with a deck in front overlooking the Luangwa River. The tents have inside baths with an outside shower room. There is also a small pool alongside the bar within the main chitenje (open-sided thatched living space), providing a cool refuge for guests after their morning’s safari activities.

Redcliff Zambezi Lodge

Superb fishing retreat in truly stunning surroundings

Redcliff Zambezi Lodge can be found on the north bank of the Zambezi

River. The charming property is close to the breath-taking Mpata Gorge and the magnificent Lower Zambezi National Park.

The lodge was originally launched as Redcliff Zambezi Fishing Safaris in 1997 with tiger

fishing as the main focus. By the time the lodge was completed in 1999, it had become obvious that the area has so much more to offer, both because of its remoteness as well as its proximity wildlife and to a wealth of cultural history.

Exclusive

Accommodating up to 16 guests at one time, the lodge has an exclusive feel to it and no attention to detail is spared. The four tent-roofed chalets (each with two beds) and two family chalets (each with four beds) are all en-suite and are furnished with beautiful indigenous features. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the Zambezi from the privacy of their chalets.

Redcliff Zambezi Lodge

Track & Trail River Camp

Fine memories are just a click awayThe enchanting Track & Trail River

Camp has a wonderful location on the banks of the Luangwa River.

The emphasis at this small and friendly camp is on photographic safaris, ensuring that every guest not only enjoys the experience of a

lifetime, but also has the ‘snapshot’ memories to take home. With specialised itin-eraries for both professional and beginners, the

camp also offers safaris designed especially to improve photography skills.

Guest can choose to explore the surrounding wilderness by open game vehicle or with an adven-turous walking safari. Those looking to unwind will feel rejuvenated by massage therapy and treat-ments at the unique facility overlooking the river.

Comfort

It is also famous for its traditional ox-tail which is an old time favourite dating back to the 1960s.

Zambia is the land of the legendary Victoria Falls, the wild Zambezi River, breath-taking falls, lakes and wetlands, a profusion of birds, abundant wildlife, and raw, pulsating wilder-ness. The hugely diverse and rich cultural heritage is reflected in the warm, welcoming and friendly people. ZTB aims to promote and campaign for all the exceptional wonders that Zambia has to offer.

With a wide range of adrenaline-fuelled activities available, Zambia is fast becoming a popular destination for adventure lovers. River rafting, bungee-jumping into the deep gorge below the Victoria Falls, abseiling, canoe safaris down the Zambezi, river surfing and excellent tiger fishing are all on offer – and the promotion and marketing of these activities has seen an influx of people from all round the world visiting the country to get their adrenaline fix.

Attractions

ZTB maintains an excellent website – www.zambiatourism.com – which provides informa-tion on all the attractions available in Zambia. Anyone planning a visit will be surprised with how much there is to see and do, from exotic restaurants to museums and shops. The website also has in-depth descriptions of the various national parks, the best places to stay and even the climate conditions in various

regions, as well as up-to-date news on current events and festivals.

Visitors can also find wildlife and birdlife check lists on the website in order to keep track of sightings, as well as a detailed synopsis on different safari experiences.

The benefit of ZTB is that the staff know and love Zambia better than most and are well placed to give excellent ‘insider’ advice and

suggestions to tourists.

Shiwa Ng’andu

the most fascinating and unique destination in Zambia

Steeped in history, Shiwa Ng’andu is an intricate mix of African colonial

history and first-class accommoda-tion. The magnificent three story brick mansion was built in 1920 by Englishman Sir Stewart Gore-Browne and is set in a private estate, teeming with wild game and covering an area of twenty-two thou-sand acres of breath-taking terrain and boasts a large natural lake at its centre – one of the largest privately owned bodies of water in Africa.

The experience at Shiwa Ng’andu is truly unique. Guests enjoy complete access to the estate, from the extensive historical archives, the wildlife reserve and lake to the day-to-day workings of the farm. Relaxed morning drives, game walks, horse-riding through the hills, fascinating historical tours and magical after-noon sundowners looking across the lake, all make the Shiwa Ng’andu an unmissable desti-nation when travelling to Zambia, earning it a prestigious nomination for Best Safari House at the 2009 Good Safari Guide awards.

Comfort

Accommodation is in the Shiwa Ng’andu manor house or the Impandala Farm House. Shiwa has four comfortable en-suite guest rooms, furnished with simple hardwood fittings and unique paintings and photographs that decorate the walls. The farm house has dramatic views of the surrounding landscape and has four spacious and light bedrooms – two of which have en-suite bathrooms. Despite

Shiwa Ng’andu

being a smaller version of the main house it has its own impressive history and was originally built to house a pair of Scottish missionaries translating the bible from English to Bemba.

Meal times at the main house are an oppor-tunity to sample the delicious farm produce and sit at the original dining room table dating back to 1920. The relaxed atmosphere and truly warm Zambian hospitality of the Shiwa Ng’andu Estate ensures that every guest feels truly at home and very much a part of the estate’s incredible history and culture.

vibrant and agreeableZambia’s capital and largest city

Lusaka is one of Africa’s most gracious with elegant and broad tree-lined avenues and some fine colonial-style buildings dotted around its central area. Beyond the city centre, Lusaka boasts leafy suburbs and with a highly agreeable year-round climate offers a surprisingly delightful quality of life for the vast majority of its residents and, in particular, for expatriates.

Zambia’s strong economic growth of the last decade has drawn in people from around the country and as a result, Lusaka is one of Africa’s fastest and most economically vibrant growing cities.

Yet, as a capital city, Lusaka only dates from the mid-1930s when the colonial authorities of the time moved the seat of government from

Livingstone to ensure a more central location in the country. Lusaka, just a stop on the main rail line, seemed the ideal location and few would argue that this was an inspired decision.

Running parallel with the original rail line is Cairo Road, which is still very much the city’s main thoroughfare and is lined with office buildings, hotels and shops of every description.

Impressive

But progressively in recent times, commercial activity has tilted in the direction of the Great East Road with the opening of the impressive Manda Hill (undergoing an expansion in 2010) and Arcades shopping malls. But there are also many traditional markets dotted around the city.

The Mulungushi International Conference Centre is also on the Great East Road and

40

attracts major international meetings and events to Lusaka. The majority of new hotel development of recent times has also tended to focus on this area, which enjoys good access to Lusaka International Airport.

The Airport itself continues to grow with new airlines and a better network of routes to regional destinations, including Windhoek and Gaborone. The airport remains congestion free and easy to use.

Lusaka’s hotels mostly cater for visiting execu-tives and those over-nighting in the city before or after a safari. Alternatively, tourists have options beyond Lusaka and can choose from a number of small, but high quality, lodges offering bush-style accommodation but within easy reach of the city.

Livingstone

The world’s adventure capitalLivingstone is one of the world’s top

all-action destinations. In fact, it is hard to think of anywhere in Africa or beyond that can offer so much to do and see in one comparatively small location.

As the location of the fabulous Victoria Falls (or Mosi-oa-Tunya as it is known in the local Kololo language), Livingstone can boast a UNESCO World Heritage Site to beat all attractions. In addition, visitors will find a tempting range of adrenalin-fuelled activities that are bound to set the heart racing.

Livingstone has some of Zambia’s hottest properties, especially those dotted along the Zambezi upstream from Livingstone. Mean-while, in town, backpackers can easily find a good, clean hostel as well as a choice of over 70 inexpensive guesthouses.

Livingstone is famed for its white water rafting on the Zambezi, through the Batoka Gorge, where the rafting is generally believed to be the best in the world. For the adventurous and young at heart, there are half-day, full-day and multi-day trips. Three companies in Living-stone offer white water rafting. The best time to visit the falls is from April to mid-September when the river is at its highest and most powerful.

46

There is also bungee jumping from the border bridge over the Victoria Falls – a truly nerve-jangling drop of 111 metres. Add in the location and this is another of Livingstone’s world-class adventures. For the brave, there is the chance to take a dip in the Zambezi.

Livingstone Adventures

Livingstone Adventures organises activities on the Victoria Falls and the Zambezi and consists of various operations:

• Batoka Sky: Helicopters and microlights. A second helicopter company also operates from Livingstone

• Jet Extreme and African Queen Cruise Company: Two sundowner cruisers accom-modating up to 200 passengers in old-style colonial luxury. Boats depart at 16.00 hours and return to Livingstone’s Waterfront before dark. A second boat company also operates on the river. Jet-propelled boats operate in shallow water and get up close to game

Livingstone

Page 51: Destination Zambia 2010-11

Livingstone’s claim to be Africa’s leading activity destination is enhanced by a regular steam train service that offers passengers fine dining in plush surroundings.

Running just 15 km from Livingstone station through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the otherwise little-used Mulobezi line, the Royal Livingstone Express captures the spirit of a luxurious bygone age.

After travelling through the park and across the Sinde River, the locomotive is detached from the carriages and, using the Sinde siding, is reattached to the observation car. Guests can then enjoy a five-course dinner.

The 1,067 mm Cape-gauge Mulobezi line runs for 166 km from Livingstone to Mulobezi and is a branch of the Bulawayo-Livingstone-Lusaka main line. It was originally used to move teak and was once part of the world’s largest privately owned railway system. The Mulobezi sawmills

47

closed in 1971 but a weekly passenger/freight service still operates on this route. The Royal Livingstone Express uses the track between 17.30 and 21.30 hours on the days it operates from the Bushtracks siding.

The Royal Livingstone Express began life in late 2007 using a restored steam loco, the ‘Mulobezi Princess’, and five beautifully restored carriages including an observation car. The loco was previously owned by wildlife artist and conser-vationist David Shepherd, who has donated the engine to the project. A second loco has been added since.

The loco and carriages have been coupled to the culinary expertise and trained staff of Sun International – owner of the Zambezi Sun and The Royal Livingstone hotels – in order to provide 92 guests with a five-star dining experi-ence. Alternatively, 160 passengers can enjoy a drinks and snacks alternative.

• A canoe company operates upstream on day or multi-day trips to see game. A second canoe operator is located in Livingstone

• River safaris

• Quad bikes: A two-hour trip around Livingstone and the Batoka Gorge on an all-terrain machine

• Carriage rides and horse riding trails.

The small 66 sq km Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park has a good selection of game. There are elephant rides and walks with either lions or cheetahs.

On top of this, there is the internationally acclaimed Livingstone Museum, the Railway Museum and a 100-year-old golf club. More recently, the colonial cinema has been restored and reopened.

In 1910 Livingstone was the location for the world’s first sculling competition – an event due to be repeated in 2010. In recent years, Oxford and Cambridge University rowing teams have competed on the river with South African universities.

National Park and its associated Game Management Areas (GMAs) lie on the north bank of the Zambezi River in south eastern Zambia.

Until 1983 when the area was declared a national park the area was the Zambian president’s private game reserve. As a result, the park has avoided the ravages of mass tourism and remains one of Africa’s few pristine wilderness areas.

The riverbank is dotted with a selection of rather splendid camps and lodges – some

inside the park and others outside in the GMA and beyond. In addition to excellent game drives, there is water-borne game viewing on the river as well as canoeing and fishing.

diversity

Due to popular demand, some of the lodges now cater as much for fishing as they do for safaris and birding. The Zambezi has plenty of tigerfish, catfish and bream. Within the National Park and under its strict return policy all fish must be put back into the river once caught.

The diversity of animals is not as wide as the other big parks, but there are spectacular opportunities to get close to game wandering in and out of the Zambezi channels. The park is especially noted for its large herds of elephant, which appear to dominate the water’s edge, and also for its huge hippo pods, basking crocodiles and abundant birdlife. Away from the river, visitors can also expect to see lion, leopard, buffalo, waterbuck, kudu, zebra, impala and warthog.

Luangwa Valley

Game-viewing galore in valley of the parksThe Luangwa Valley represents one

of southern Africa’s finest game-viewing experiences, with dense animal concentrations and a comparatively open landscape.

The valley comprises four national parks: the popular and easy-to-reach 9,050 sq km South Luangwa National Park; the much less visited and smaller 4,636 sq km North Luangwa National Park; the tiny 300 sq km Luambe National Park and Lukusuzi National Park.

South Luangwa is probably Zambia’s best known and most frequently visited national park. It is served by Mfuwe Airport, which provides access to the area with daily flights from Lusaka. South Luangwa enjoys high

densities of game, including frequent leopard sightings, and the park is home to an endemic subspecies, Thornicroft’s giraffe.

In the dry season, the animals concentrate along the western bank of the Luangwa River. In fact, the entire Luangwa ecosystem is supported by the ebb and flow of the Luangwa River, which floods the surrounding land in the rainy season.

High standards of service and accommodation, top quality guiding and a comparative absence of visitors combine to make South Luangwa a real favourite. South Luangwa has seasonal bush camps secreted throughout the park, plus a selection of more permanent accommodation just outside the main entrance.

57

North Luangwa, also on the bank of the Luangwa River, boasts a few seasonal bush camps and is perfect for those seeking a real wilderness experience, off the beaten track, where visitors encounter little or no human presence. North Luangwa has one or two subspecies, such as Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay’s zebra, not normally found in its larger sister park to the south. It also has some well protected black rhino.

Luambe has just one lodge and animal numbers have recovered well here in recent years. Like North Luangwa, the park is an ideal ‘away from it all’ destination for those with previous experience of Africa.

Lion Camp, overlooking Lion Lagoon, is one of the few privileged lodges to be situated deep inside the South Luangwa National Park, one of the finest game and bird viewing wilderness areas in Southern Africa.A maximum of 18 guests can be accommodated in nine canvas-and-thatch chalets, which are raised on stilts. Each chalet features a private balcony, stylish interior and en-suite bathroom. 220V inverter power is also available in each.

The Luangwa River Lodge consists of five chalets and accom-modates no more than 10 guests at any one time. The chalets are individually named; Mwala, Mazi, Merzi, Moto and Ziko and all feature unique decorative themes.Luangwa River Lodge’s open plan lounge, dining area and infinity pool provide excellent game viewing opportunities. Simplicity and individuality are at the heart of the Lodge’s cuisine where the head chef creates signature dishes using fresh local ingredients and international influences.

Designed by Neil Rocher, Luangwa Safari House is an extraor-dinary private house for up to eight guests comprising four large en-suite bedrooms situated about 1km from Nkwali camp. The house is constructed in traditional style from weathered leadwood and faced with locally cut stone. It is set on the edge of a seasonal lagoon and with a backdrop of the Chindeni Hills the game, including elephants and giraffe, which use the area to feed and water throughout the day. Inside, the house is much more contemporary and has a very individual feel.

Luangwa Wilderness Lodge is a mid-range lodge operating in the remote but beautiful Luambe National Park (which is situated between the North and South Luangwa National Parks). The lodge offers five comfortable safari tents and a reed family house all situated on the banks of the Luangwa River and offering great views over a game rich stretch of the river. Luambe is now being described as South Luangwa without the tourists and as the lodge is the only accommodation within the park, it means guests are guaranteed to be the only vehicle in the park.

Luwi Bushcamp is a seasonal camp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon.Accommodation is in four huts made of grass and thatch with polished mud floors. A small thatch provides shade over the bar area. Daytime meals are served in the shade of the trees with a view of the grassy plain that normally attracts an abundance of wildlife, whilst dinner is taken under the stars accompanied by the sounds of the African night.

A system of lighted boardwalks links the chalets to the heart of the lodge; where a central boma with a fireplace is surrounded by the library, a small curio shop, thatched seating areas, and the bar. There is also a lower viewing deck and an infinity swimming pool to cool off in.Experienced and knowledgeable guides lead game drives and walking safaris. The Camp is open from May to October. No book-ings are accepted for children under 12.

In addition to the Lodge’s sumptuous bush breakfasts and picnics, the chef and his team will happily cater for individual requests.

The house has its own swimming pool and guests are provided with private vehicles, guides and an armed scout for walking safaris. To ensure cuisine of the highest standard, a private chef and house manager are available to discuss menu planning and meals are arranged around the individual requirements of guests.

Luangwa Wilderness Lodge is ideal for those in transit between the North and South Parks but offers a great experience in its own right. The lodge offers a peaceful wilderness experience in a prime loca-tion accommodating both safari guests and campers.

There is a large lagoon adjacent to camp teeming with hippo and crocodile. This permanent water source attracts game from far and wide making the camp area constantly busy with animals.Luwi is one of the camps situated deepest in the Luangwa wilder-ness, lending the camp a rustic appeal and providing a truly African bush experience. Since there are very few roads in this area of the Park, the emphasis from Luwi is on walking.

impressive biodiversityKafue is one of Africa’s largest

national parks, covering an area of 22,400 sq km and spanning three Zambian provinces. Kafue is Zambia’s oldest national park – its creation dating from the mid-1920s.

At an altitude at over 1,350 metres, Kafue’s biodiversity is impressive with some 55 different mammal species.

Until comparatively recently Kafue was little visited by tourists and in many ways neglected as a destination and poorly managed in terms of wildlife protection with poaching a major issue. Thankfully, this situation has now changed as with outside aid and assistance, the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has

stepped up patrols and, as a consequence, animal numbers have been on the rise for some time.

Untouched

Furthermore, the Zambian authorities have earmarked Kafue as an area for sympathetic development and a number of high quality camps have grown up over the last few years. Nevertheless and as result of its vast size, Kafue remains largely undeveloped as a game-viewing destination and in many respects is still an untouched wilderness.

There are only few camps in the park and these are either located on the east bank of the Kafue River, which dissects the Park, or

in the Busanga Plains a wetland area of some 750 sq km in the northeast – a magnet for the swamp dwelling sitatunga plus red lechwe and puku. The plains also attract blue wildebeest, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, buffalo, zebra, reed-buck, oribi and impala. In turn, lion, leopard and even cheetah (which are rare elsewhere in Zambia) are drawn to Busanga.

The 970 km Kafue River eventually flows into the Zambezi. The little fished Kafue provides great opportunities for anglers, but remains less popular than the Lower Zambia for serious fishermen.

of Zambia’s nine provinces and covers a vast area of over 147,000 sq km bordered by Malawi, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It remains a land largely undiscovered by tourists, yet borders Lake Tanganyika, contains some of Africa’s most impressive waterfalls, is the source of the River Congo and boasts the important Bangweulu swamps (Zambia’s own Okavango).

The rarely-visited 2,000 sq km Sumbu National Park, along 80 km of the shore of Lake Tangan-yika, is excellent for angling and has rising numbers of game after a long period of decline. Nyika is a top spot for birding.

Unfortunately some of the more remote parks in northern Zambia have no fixed accommoda-tion and can only be visited by self-sustainable tourists with their own vehicles and camping equipment.

Not to be missed and sometimes difficult to get to, Lake Tanganyika is a vast inland sea that boasts over 350 species of fish of which most are endemic and now has improving levels of accommodation.

Lake Mweru, although off the beaten track, is also worth a visit but remains undeveloped. The lake has spawned a dynamic population, rich in culture, fervent in trade and colourful in nature. Tourist facilities are limited to a few ‘guesthouses’ of varying standards.

In Central Province, the Kasanka National Park is a particular attraction with its unusual bat migration.

Shiwa Ng’andu is an English-style Mansion House built in remote central Zambia by an eccentric English man, Sir Stewart Gore- Browne, and depicted in the book ‘The Africa House’ by Christina Lamb. Sir Stewart died in 1967. Shiwa then fell into disrepair. But in 1999, it was bought by his grandson and then returned to its former glory.Shiwa House accommodates 4-5 couples. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms and are simple with original hardwood furnishings

With panoramic views over the swamps, Shoebill Island Camp takes its name from the breed of storks that can usually be seen nearby. The camp offers accommodation in safari tents under thatch roofs and in reed cottages. Each has two beds, an en-suite shower and flush toilet.Shoebill Island is intended mainly for international visitors, but also welcomes local or regional clients. It has a campsite nearby for those on a tighter budget.

Wasa Lodge is situated on the edge of Lake Wasa in Kasanka National Park, just 12 km from the park entrance. There are fine views, with puku, hippo and sometimes even sitatunga visible from the lodge, while the hide at Fibwe is just a 15-minute drive away. There are three top quality rondavels, each with a double and single bed, en-suite bathroom and private veranda. Lighting is by solar power. Additional accommodation is in six simpler chalets with

and paintings. Fireplaces are lit every night and the atmosphere at Shiwa is unique. The food is good, simple and wholesome and the stunning gardens are kept in their former glory. Guests can choose from game viewing, boating, fishing, bird watching, horse riding, river walks, historical drives, traditional dugout trips, walking and trips to Kapishya Hot Springs.

Boating can be arranged in banana boats or dugout canoes. March and April offer an amazing watery wilderness for the adventurous. Visitors can be taken on to Shoebill from Kasanka by road or charter flight.Arrangements can be made for research groups.

rich in minerals and sceneryZambia’s copperbelt covers the

mineral-rich mines (to the north) and large farming and bush areas (to the south) and comprises several towns including Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola, Luan-shya and Mufulira.

Due to its mining industry focus, the Copper-belt is not best known for its tourism attrac-tions. Nevertheless, there are some interesting sightseeing possibilities and outside the main towns, the area is blessed with beautiful scenery and has two large rivers within its boundaries.

There is a range of budget to first-class accom-modation – this is especially true in Chingola and Kitwe with guesthouses and new hotels in good supply.

The town of Ndola is an important commer-cial centre and is 320 km north of Lusaka and has direct international air connections with Johannesburg and Nairobi. With modern offices, shops and the large business district, one the city’s largest attractions in the annual Zambia International Trade Fair, held each July. As a result, Ndola has several accommodation options for business travellers.

77

Ndola is home to the Copperbelt Museum which houses many interesting exhibits of the minerals found here as well as cultural arts and crafts. The Dag Hammerskjöld Memorial is just 10 km from Ndola and commemorates the site where the Secretary General of the United Nations died in a plane crash during the Katanga crisis in Republic of Congo in 1961.

For golfing enthusiasts, Nchanga golf course in Chingola is described as a ‘gem’ and is one of the most beautiful and well-kept courses in Africa.
