Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to be accorded this

opportunity to write to you, the esteemed reader

of the fifth edition of ‘Destination Zambia’.

I am delighted that this publication comes as a result of the

close partnership between the Tourism Council of Zambia

and the Zambia Tourism Board.

My Ministry will continue to support the efforts of the

private sector in projects such as the publication of

‘Destination Zambia’ in our mutual quest to highlight and

celebrate the beauty and diversity of our country.

Our goal in this particular area is twofold: to show the

diverse experiences that are available to foreign tourists;

and to open up the tourism sector for Zambians to explore

and enjoy the splendour of their own backyard.

‘Destination Zambia’ will no doubt serve to provide just a

taste of what we offer to our target and source markets,

and in those territories where we remain undiscovered

beyond our well-known icon, the Victoria Falls.

I am especially pleased that we have embraced technological

developments and that you, the reader, can read and pass

on an electronic copy of the publication to others online.

I remain confident that ‘Destination Zambia’ will evolve to

offer a complete insight into what awaits you and that it

will be a tool that will assist you in making that very correct

decision to make Zambia your next holiday destination.

My vision is to push Zambia’s visibility within the sub-region and

internationally to become one of the world’s most preferred

tourist destinations leveraging on Victoria Falls, the country’s

abundant wildlife resource in our twenty two (22) national

game parks, the culture and smiles of Zambian people and the

synergy to be achieved from sub-regional partnerships.

It has been a great year for Zambia, with our fantastic

national football team, the Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets),

winning the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. I am sure

that 2013 will be equally momentous as Zambia and

Zimbabwe co-hosts the United Nations World Tourism

Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly. A truly Zambian

welcome awaits you.

Honourable Sylvia Masebo, MP Minister of Tourism and Arts

Introduction

When it comes to natural wonders and adventure - Zambia has it all

Zambia represents all that is best about sub-

Saharan Africa, with big skies, wide-open

spaces, far horizons, uncrowded roads and

spectacular wildlife viewing that can rarely be

bettered. Amazingly, in spite of its many attractions,

this is still a country that is waiting to be discovered.

Yet Zambia is home to Africa’s most spectacular natural

wonder, the Victoria Falls, where the water spills over at a

peak rate of 3,000 cubic metres per second as the mighty

River Zambezi heads for the Indian Ocean. There is nothing

quite like it anywhere else on earth and no visit to Zambia

would be complete without a trip to view the falls.

As Zambia’s gateway to the falls, the town of Livingstone

is very much the nation’s tourism capital and a destination

in its own right, with a range of fun-filled activities, from

helicopter rides to sundowner cruises and from white water

rafting to journeys by steam train.

Impressive

Zambia’s game parks are as impressive as they are varied.

Some, such as South Luangwa, are regarded as among the

best in Africa; others are hardly known, even in Zambia,

and little visited. Yet for those who want something

unusual and off the beaten track, these parks are worth

seeking out for the chance to view wildlife in a truly

pristine environment.

Ideally, tourists should visit more than one park in order

to fully appreciate what Zambia has to offer. This could

involve mixing a vast high-veld park such as Kafue with a

low-veld area like South Luangwa or the Lower Zambezi

Introduction

so visitors can expect a real mix of customs and festivals.

Some of these are difficult to pin down in terms of calendar

dates because they take place in rural and sometimes inac-

cessible areas and do not exist for the benefit of tourists.

But, given the opportunity, they are well worth the time and

trouble – and visitors are always welcome.

Eye-catching

The most eye-catching of these festivals is Kuomboka, at

the end of the rainy season, as the Lozi king is paddled by

barge, complete with a replica black elephant, from Lealui

to his dry season residence on higher ground at Limulunga.

There is also the Kazanga festival of music and dance, which

has been held by the Nkoya people for over 500 years.

Beachside setting

Zambia may be landlocked, but Lake Kariba provides a

beachside setting, with good hotels and plenty of activities

on the water. There are even lake cruises on board the

‘Southern Belle’.

Lastly, a word about Lusaka. Often overlooked by visitors,

the unhurried, tree-lined capital of Zambia now has a superb

assortment of hotels and the infrastructure to host interna-

tional conferences and exhibitions. Lusaka also offers great

shopping and a growing selection of good places to eat.

with its classy riverside camps and lodges, canoeing and

exhilarating tigerfish.

Then there is the overall quality of accommodation in

camps and lodges with top levels of service and food. To

this must be added the high standard of safari guides.

Zambian guides are among the best trained and most

knowledgeable in Africa and visitors rarely have a question

that a guide cannot answer.

Zambian culture

Over and above the attractions of the nation’s wildlife

parks is Zambia’s own culture. This is a nation with over

70 tribes and a similar number of languages and dialects,

Page 11: Destination Zambia 2013

Zambia has 19 national parks and 34 game

management areas (GMAs). Together, they

cover a truly remarkable 30 per cent of the

country’s total land area of 752,614 sq km.

National parks and associated GMAs are dotted

throughout the country, but getting to and from these

often remote areas can be difficult. South Luangwa (year-

round via Mfuwe) and Lower Zambezi (seasonal to both

Jeki and Royal airstrips) are the only major parks with a

direct scheduled air link, while others are served by charter

flights or are best reached overland.

Today, Kafue National Park, the largest, covering about

22,000 sq km, is easily accessible by way of an all-weather

road from Lusaka. As Zambia’s road network continues

to improve – which it has over the past few years – then

reaching some of these parks will become easier.

Broadly, the national parks fall into three categories: low

veld (such as North/South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi);

high veld (Kafue); and floodplain (Blue Lagoon, Lochinvar

and Bangweulu). Each park has its wildlife attractions. It’s

important to visit more than one park, because certain

animals – especially the various antelope species – have

adapted to life in varying climatic conditions.

The Zambia Tourism Board and the Zambia Wildlife

Authority (ZAWA) are keen that visitors – and investors

– should look beyond the better-known parks. There has

been some success, as evidenced by the growing popularity

of alternatives such as Kafue and Kasanka.

Perhaps surprisingly and disappointingly, some of the 19

parks are rarely visited. Lukusuzi in the east and West

Lunga are two examples. But with only limited access, no

overnight facilities, few recognisable tracks for vehicles to

follow and little more than a ZAWA ranger at the main

gate, these are likely to remain comparatively inaccessible

in the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, these off-the-

beaten-track parks still have potential for further long-term

development.

National parks offer so much variety of wildlife

Lusaka & Regions

Lusaka is a delight: a city of surprises, all of them

good; a mix of the old and the new, still with

hints of colonial Africa; but a symbol of the

dynamic nation that Zambia has become in the past

few years.

Compared with the bustle of many other African cities,

Lusaka has a relaxed atmosphere in which the presence

of people is not overwhelming. This is a city where it is

still easy to get around; where the standard of driving

is comparatively orderly; where common courtesies are

observed; and where the inhabitants still have time to

share a friendly conversation.

This is best illustrated by a trip into town from Kenneth

Kaunda International Airport along the Great East Road,

a thoroughfare that is mostly deserted, with only the odd

charcoal-laden bicycle on the highway and countryside on

both sides.

This is a city with a population of 1.7 million, yet somehow

it seems uncrowded. While there is some traffic congestion

at the intersection close to the Manda Hill Shopping

Complex, jams are not a feature of everyday life and

journeys do not have to be planned to take account of

expected hold-ups.

Relaxed

The city’s broad, tree-lined avenues provide Lusaka with

a relaxed, almost provincial air. Many of the city’s finest

buildings are located in this central area, while those across

the railway line on, for example, the popular Cairo Road,

tend to date from the 1960s and 1970s.

Lusaka has been transformed by the success of Zambia’s

economy. A good example can be found in the city’s

impressive Arcades and Manda Hill shopping malls. In fact,

Manda Hill has been enlarged and revamped since it first

opened. The two malls, within a few hundred metres of

each other on Great East Road, represent a new Zambia

characterised by smart restaurants, trendy coffee shops

and designer-name stores.

Lusaka & Regions

Zambia’s outstanding natural wonders. This is a pity, as

Lusaka is certainly worth a day or two of anyone’s time.

Blue Lagoon National Park

The Blue Lagoon National Park is a new kid on the block.

Previously controlled by the Ministry of Defence, it was

closed to the public. Now, the 500 sq km park has been

transferred to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and is

waiting to be discovered.

Blue Lagoon is only a 120 km drive from Lusaka, making it an

ideal day visit from the nation’s capital or an easy weekend

getaway; yet the park is almost untouched by tourism.

The area was originally a colonial farm and the farmhouse

is now used as the park’s reception. Nearby are four

cottages which serve as the Blue Lagoon’s only fixed

accommodation. There is also a campsite.

On Blue Lagoon’s vast floodplains there are herds of kafue lechwe,

sitatunga (whose aquatic tendencies are ideal for this terrain),

zebra and a few buffalo. In addition, Blue Lagoon, like nearby

Lochinvar National Park, is home to an amazing variety of birdlife.

Lochinvar National Park

Located off the main Lusaka-Livingstone highway, the

428 sq km Lochinvar National Park is one of Africa’s finest

What’s on offer at the two malls is still beyond the budget

of many ordinary Zambians; yet they are an example of the

nation’s growing affluence as copper exports and internal

economic reforms continue to make a positive impact on

people’s lives.

There is a limited range of things to see – the Lusaka

National Museum, the cultural village, the zoo and the

botanical gardens – but sometimes just being in Lusaka

is enough.

Brands

Visitors can choose from a range of quality hotels,

matching those on offer elsewhere in Africa, with a mix

of international brands such as InterContinental, Southern

Sun, Taj and Protea plus a selection of home-grown

properties in the mid to lower categories.

Lusaka is an ideal stopover for those heading to South

Luangwa, Kafue (by road) and Lower Zambezi and also

for some of the less visited parks in the north. Zambia’s

fast-improving road network is centred on Lusaka and the

highways are good, with surprisingly little traffic. Journey

times by road are being reduced, but distances are vast in

Zambia and flying is often the best option.

While foreign visitors will no doubt be impressed by

Lusaka, the city is often bypassed in the rush to see

wetland areas. This former cattle ranch has been a national

park since 1972.

The park is famous for its birdlife, with over 400 recorded

species, as well as for its populations of antelope such

as sitatunga, oribi, the endemic kafue lechwe, bushbuck

and waterbuck. In addition, zebra, wildebeest, kudu and

buffalo can be found here.

During the wet season, the park is mostly flooded grassland.

Herds of antelope move around the park throughout the

year as the water rises and then subsides. The park straddles

two ecoregions, with woodland in the south and the flood-

plains (and important Ramsar site) in the north.

With only buffalo to worry about, this park is ideal for walking

safaris. At certain times of the year, a makoro canoe is another

way of viewing game as well as the park’s impressive number

and variety of waterfowl – the highest in Zambia.

In addition to game viewing, the park has hot springs and

is home to the Iron Age village of Sibanze Hill.

Lilayi Elephant Nursery

As its name suggests, the Lilayi Elephant Nursery takes care of

abandoned elephant calves, often the tragic victims of poaching

and human conflict. Less than two years old, the calves are highly

vulnerable and dependent on their mothers. Many do not survive

without intricate care and nutrient-rich milk.

This loving care is provided by Game Rangers International,

a Zambian non-profit organisation supported by the David

Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, working closely with the

Zambian Wildlife Authority. A team of locally employed,

trained keepers watch and care for the calves 24 hours

a day, whether out for their daily walks or sitting close

by their boma at night. The young elephants to learn to

overcome the tragic loss of their family as they browse,

play and bath together in a natural environment.

The Lilayi Resort & Game Reserve provides this natural

environment where the young and vulnerable elephant

calves can learn to survive. Located just 20 minutes from

the centre of Lusaka, the resort is undergoing a major

renovation so that visitors can go and relax for a weekend

or a week-long break as well as taking long walks among

the abundant game.

There are plans for a new boma for the orphan elephants

and a visitors’ centre where lectures and educational

literature will be readily available.

The Victoria Falls are a breathtaking sight. At almost

2 km wide and 103 metres high, the falls earns its

place as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the

World and a Unesco World Heritage Site. During the

peak flow in April, after the rainy season, the water is

falling at a rate of 550,000 cubic metres per second.

Well marked trails meander through the lush vegetation,

giving visitors an opportunity to view the world’s largest

tourism capital puts ‘wow’ into wonder

single curtain of falling water from numerous vantage

points. For the more adventurous, there is a range of

activities unique to Zambia. They include an Under the

Spray Tour at the bottom of the falls and swimming in the

Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island at the very lip of the falls.

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is easy to reach from Living-

stone. This beautiful game park is host to Zambia’s only

population of white rhino as well as elephant, zebra,

buffalo, warthog and giraffe and a wide variety of flora

and birdlife. Visitors can access the park in a two-wheel-

drive vehicle and the riverside is ideal for picnics. Alterna-

tively, knowledgeable bush guides are on hand

to take visitors through the park on a game drive or

walking safari.

Livingstone is...Inspiring

Livingstone is the fourth-largest city in Zambia; yet the

immediate surroundings offer wonderful opportunities to

experience rural and traditional ways of life. Senior Chief

Mukuni and his Chiefdom welcome visitors to their villages.

The annual Lwiindi Ceremony in October brings together

various traditional song, dance, poetry and theatrical

reenactments in celebration of the Mukuni heritage. Local

craftspeople display their wares at Victoria Falls and in

the town centre at Mukuni Park. Souvenir hunters can

choose from a wide range of wooden carvings, traditional

basketware and local artwork.

Responsible tourism is about making better places for

people to live in and for people to visit. Livingstone

operators recognise their key role in protecting and

enhancing their destination for future generations. Sun

International Resorts has taken this ethos to the heart of

its operation by engaging in development projects and

partnerships with the community. Tongabezi Lodge has

supported Tujatane School for over a decade and continues

to provide top-quality education and opportunities for the

local rural community. Jollyboys Backpackers Lodge and

Toka Leya Lodge provide guests with solar-heated water,

composting facilities and worm farms. African Impact

organises volunteering projects lasting from half a day to

several months. Lion Encounter, The River Club and Mukuni

Big Five Safaris all provide unique volunteering opportu-

nities involving a range of worthwhile community and

conservation projects. Olga’s, a non-profit-making Italian

restaurant and accommodation project, invests its proceeds

in a community training college. These are just some of the

ways in which visitors to Livingstone can be sure their visit

is having a positive impact on the community at large.

Livingstone is... Adventurous

Whether you’re an adrenalin junkie or a soul-searching

traveller, there are lots of things to do in Livingstone.

Microlight and helicopter flights provide spectacular aerial

views of the Victoria Falls in all their wonder. Visitors can

get a close look at elephants, lions and cheetahs in the

course of a guided bush walk. Scenic canoe safaris on the

Upper Zambezi meander through the islands and river

channels with excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing

and birdwatching. For a relaxing afternoon on the river,

visitors can board a sunset cruise, sit back with a cooling

drink and enjoy one of the most amazing sunsets on earth.

There is no doubt that the Zambezi River offers world-

class excitement. Whether by raft, kayak, or riverboard, a

journey over the infamous Zambezi rapids, from the base

of Victoria Falls through the Batoka Gorge, is a rollercoaster

ride. Trips can be arranged from half a day to a week,

with camping on the pristine white beaches downriver.

Jetboating through the rapids is a thrill to be experienced.

Or guests can travel in comfort and ease by cable car. For

the very brave, there is the ultimate challenge of a bungee

jump near the Victoria Falls.

Livingstone is... Romantic

Livingstone has a range of accommodation to suit most budgets,

from backpackers’ lodges and quaint guesthouses to luxury

lodges and resorts with all the amenities one could ask for.

Beautiful semi-precious stones are mined and crafted

in Zambia. If you like jewellery, then Bobbli Gems and

Mosi-oa-tunya National Park

Livingstone has its own national park. Located just outside

the town, the 66 sq km Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

borders the River Zambezi for about 20 km and encom-

passes the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls.

For a small park, it has plenty of wildlife including white

rhino, elephant (which swim across the river between

Zambia and Zimbabwe), giraffe, zebra, buffalo, sable

and eland. The main M10 road from Livingstone to the

Kazungula ferry goes directly through the park.

west Lunga National Park

The seldom visited 1,684 sq km West Lunga National Park

in North West Province, close to the Angolan border, is a

remote wildlife area and the only park in Zambia covered

by dense forest. The wider region is the largest evergreen

forest in Africa outside the equatorial zone.

Unfortunately, the park is still poorly served in terms of access

(with only a dirt track to the main gate), suitable accommo-

dation and management. In any case, the thickness of the

vegetation would make game viewing difficult for visitors.

The undisturbed nature of the park means plenty of forest-

dwelling wildlife such as yellow-backed duiker and bushpig.

There is also open grassland, said to contain elephant and

buffalo plus miombo species such as roan, sable, Lichten-

stein’s hartebeest, impala, puku, eland and even sitatunga

as well as some primates, plus crocodiles and hippos in the

West Lunga and Kabompo rivers. Birdwatching is said to be

excellent, too.

Liuwa Plains National Park

Located in Western Zambia, close to the border with

Angola, Liuwa Plains National Park – one of Africa’s most

remote and inaccessible – is managed by African Parks

(Zambia) in association with Zambia Wildlife Authority

and the Barotse Royal Establishment, the traditional

government of the Lozi people.

Covering 3,660 sq km and famous for its animal density,

Liuwa Plains is home to Africa’s second-largest wildebeest

migration as some 35,000 animals move through the park

in search of grass.

Visitors can expect to see zebra, red lechwe, oribi, eland

and buffalo as well as predators such as hyena, some wild

dog and the odd cheetah plus a few introduced lions.

Owing to its impressive animal numbers, Liuwa Plains has

been a protected area for well over 100 years, gaining

national park status about 40 years ago. The park is remote

and hard to reach – it’s a two-day drive from Lusaka – and

accommodation is limited to the seasonal Matamanene

Bushcamp. Visitors are advised to fly there, although some

mobile safari operators now come through the park.

The lawned campsite is set among large trees in shady surrounds, catering for the overland and self-drive market, and can take 100 campers.

The Waterfront has some of the best facilities in the area, including a large deck, restaurant and bar overlooking the Zambezi River, wi-fi, internet café, TV lounge, two swimming pools and large activity centre.

The carefully managed Lower Zambezi National

Park is one of Zambia’s finest. The park cleverly

combines a traditional style of park, containing

plenty of game, with a range of river attractions and

with Zimbabwe Mana Pools National Park on the

opposite bank. Once the private game reserve of the

Zambian president, today the Lower Zambezi is a

Unesco World Heritage Site.

Presidential supervision prevented the area going the way

of some of Zambia’s other parks, thus avoiding the wildlife

depletion that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. In fact,

many consider the Lower Zambezi to be the finest and

least spoiled wilderness area in Africa. Moreover, the park

upholds high standards in terms of camps and lodges,

which are well spaced out along the river bank, as well as

an unspoilt wildernessits stance in regard to conservation. The park is renowned

not only for its elephant population, which can often been

seen at the edge of the Zambezi, but also for buffalo,

waterbuck, zebra, roan, eland, kudu and sable. There are

also plenty of carnivores, including all three big cats – lion,

leopard and cheetah – plus wild dog and hyena.

Hard-fighting

The park provides excellent opportunities for canoeing,

an idyllic way to view wildlife. Catching the hard-fighting

tigerfish is a further attraction and the park’s catch-and-

release scheme has won praise from conservationists.

Back from the river is the Zambezi Escarpment, an area

covered with both miombo and mopane woodland.

Beyond the park’s informal boundary is a much larger Game

Managed Area (GMA). This also contains significant numbers

of animals which move freely between the two places.

Luangwa valley

42 DESTINATION Zambia

Luangwa Valley comprises four national parks:

• The popular South Luangwa National Park, arguably one

of Africa’s greatest wildlife conservation areas

• The remote and still hardly visited North Luangwa

National Park

• The privately managed Luambe National Park

• The 2,720 sq km Lukusuzi, with no visitor facilities and

few recognisable tracks but plenty of game, has great

potential.

south Luangwa national Park

South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s finest and

best managed. Covering 9,050 sq km and bordering the

Luangwa River, the park is ideal for game viewing during

the dry season from late April to November.

Not only are animals easy to spot, but they are present in

large numbers – especially just before the rainy season,

when they are drawn to the river to find water. There are

60 species of mammal in the park.

game viewing galore in Luangwa valley

Beyond the main gate area, the park is quite uncrowded,

even though it is Zambia’s most popular in terms of

visitor numbers. Visitors can expect to drive undisturbed

for relatively long distances and to find ideal places for a

sundowner or early-morning beverage.

The overall quality of the park is matched by the high

standard of accommodation, which is concentrated mostly

in a broad area near the main gate but across the river.

South Luangwa is famous for its walking safaris and every

visitor should seize the opportunity to see wildlife on foot

and to appreciate the finer details of nature as viewed close

up. For many, following the spoor, examining and identi-

fying droppings and recording insects is as rewarding as a

sight of the big cats – of which there are many in the park.

Of course, visitors primarily come to see the larger animals

as well as some of the endemic subspecies of Luangwa

Valley such as Thornicroft’s giraffe (of which there are

thought to be about 1,500) and Cookson’s wildebeest

(although this is largely confined to North Luangwa

National Park). Crayshaw’s zebra is found in larger numbers

in Luangwa than elsewhere.

Lion and leopard are so abundant that visitors can expect

to see both, even on a short stay. Large herds of buffalo

are another feature of the park.

Page 45: Destination Zambia 2013

Luangwa Valley

43

The Luangwa River is home to impressive-looking Nile crocodiles

and large pods of sometimes fractious hippo. The park’s birdlife

is equally fascinating, with a reported 400 species.

Luambe National Park

Often overlooked and sometimes forgotten alongside the

bigger and much-visited South Luangwa National Park,

Luambe is 300 sq km of pure solitude and an impressively

varied and often wooded landscape.

Energetically and sympathetically run since 1999 by the

conservation charity Luangwa Wilderness e.V in close

association with Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and

with the support of local communities, the small park has

bounced back to life from the dark days of the 1970s and

1980s when only a few shy animals remained.

The charity has built a lodge, but hopes one day to return

the park to full ZAWA control and management and to

enable Luambe to link up with some of the region’s major

national parks in Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Like the neighbouring North and South Luangwa national

parks, Luambe is dominated by the Luangwa River.

Visitors can expect to see elephant and hippo; predators

such as lion, leopard, hyena and wild dog; plus buffalo,

eland, zebra, puku, bushbuck, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest,

Cookson’s wildebeest, waterbuck, impala, warthog and

genet. Walking safaris are a popular way to view wildlife.

Sadly, the park’s sole property, Luangwa Wilderness Lodge,

is no longer in operation. The best way to reach Lumabe is

via the Waka Waka airstrip. The alternative is a long road

journey from Mfuwe Airport or Lilongwe (Malawi) Airport.

North Luangwa National Park

The remote 4,636 sq km North Luangwa National Park is little

visited. In fact, until comparatively recently, trips to North Luangwa

were limited to game rangers and no tourism was permitted.

Until the mid 1980s the park was badly affected by

poaching; but thanks to the North Luangwa Conserva-

tion Project the area is returning to its former glory while

maintaining its reputation as a true wilderness. Poaching

is more or less a thing of the past, and a symbol of this

renaissance was the reintroduction of black rhino.

As with South Luangwa, the park is dominated by the

broad Luangwa River and animals are drawn to its reliable

waters, especially towards the end of the dry season.

Endemics

Broadly speaking, North Luangwa has the same animal

species as South Luangwa, but also one or two endemics

such as Cookson’s wildebeest, rarely seen to the south.

The park is known particularly for its large herds of buffalo.

Some 350 bird species have been recorded.

As in South Luangwa, walking safaris are especially popular

and often preferred by guests as a healthier, more exciting

and authentic game-viewing experience.

North Luangwa has a few tiny seasonal camps such as

Kutandala, Mwaleshi, Luangwa North, Nkalamo and

Buffalo Camp. Camps are usually open from early June

to early November each year, after which the rains are

expected to arrive.

Additional InformationActivities: Walking safaris, irdwatching (400 of Zambia’s 732 species are found here), photographic safaris

Airports/airstrips: Daily to South Luangwa (Mfuwe) from Lusaka all year. North Luangwa is more difficult but there are airstrips open for charter traffic

Best time to visit: April-October (South Luangwa) with some properties open year-round, June to October (North Luangwa: access in the rainy season is virtually impossible)

Wildlife found in this area: Elephant, buffalo, lion, caracal, wild dog, serval and side striped jackal and very good leopard densities plus many others

Major attractions: Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest (both unique to Luangwa Valley)

52 DESTINATION Zambia

Kafue National Park is one of Zambia’s most priceless

gems. The park is unrivalled in its bewildering

diversity of species, which includes mammals large

and small, from elephants to elephant shrews, as well

as birds and many others. Such amazing diversity (there

are over 100 species of dung beetle alone, for example)

and beauty will form the basis of an expanding tourism

trade and revenue for the government in the future.

Its value will increase as other such wild and beautiful

areas diminish in size and number.

amazing diversity makes kafue a real gemIt will, therefore, continue to attract visitors from all over

the world in growing numbers; and, unlike other revenue-

producing entities such as the mines, it is sustainable; it will

not eventually run out; but it needs protection.

Thriving

Unlike some other large national parks in neighbouring

counties, once famous for their splendid herds of animals

and their tourism industry, Kafue is thriving.

Animal numbers and species diversity are increasing

thanks to a combination of protection by Zambia

Wildlife Authority, greater investor confidence and more

investment. The new Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Sylvia

Masebo, has promised to help provide this protection and

has enlisted the support and cooperation of Zambia’s army

and air force in the region to help achieve this.

Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi have a high biomass and

Diversity

Visitors will see more animals in the lower areas, but the

diversity of species is less, while in Kafue the reverse is true,

with fewer animals but a greater diversity of species. For

example, Lichtenstein’s hartebeeste, roan, sable, eland and

others are miombo species, but generally do not occur in

58 DESTINATION Zambia

Up in the far north and a long way from

anywhere is a largely undiscovered part of

Zambia. Sometimes hard to reach, but always

worth the effort, the Northern Province (covering

one fifth of the country) and Luapula Province are

wide-open spaces with limited accommodation.

Yet Lake Tanganyika has Zambia’s only PADI dive centre

as well as truly exceptional fishing for Nile perch, salmon,

a vast area of undiscovered beautytigerfish and yellowbelly. An indication of the lake’s

bountiful nature is the fact that the Zambia National

Fishing Competition is held at Nkamba Lodge and Ndole

Bay Lodge each year.

Game viewing is largely restricted to the 2,000 sq km

Sumbu National Park, with significant numbers of elephant,

hippo, puku, roan, sable, eland, warthog and bushbuck.

There is a chance to view sitatunga in the Kampasa

rainforest. Lion, leopard and buffalo are also present.

Spectacular

Zambia’s only privately run game reserve, Kasanka National

Park, is also in northern Zambia. Managed by the Kasanka

Trust, the park and associated Bangweulu Wetlands are

famous for the annual migration of fruit bats. The birdlife in

northern Zambia is spectacular, giving enthusiasts an oppor-

tunity to view species not found elsewhere in the country.

In addition to Lake Tanganyika, there are Lake Mweru and

Lake Nabeul; wetlands; and the waterfalls of Lumangwe,

Kabwelume, Kalambo and Chishimba.

Northern & central provinces

Page 61: Destination Zambia 2013

Getting to northern Zambia by road can be difficult. There

is a tarmacked road all the way from Lusaka to the port of

Mpulungu and there will soon be a 40 km road link from

Mbala to Lake Tanganyika.

The gravel road from Kawambwa and Kasama via

Mporokoso is in good condition, as is the gravel road

from the Luapula River valley via Kaputa on Lake Mweru

Wantipa. Construction of a new road from Mbala to

Kasaba Bay got under way in 2010. The bitumen road from

Kasama via Mbala to Mpulungu is also in good condition.

Visitors can charter a light aircraft and use Kasaba Bay

in Sumbu National Park, while Proflight operates twice-

weekly flights to the provincial capital, Kasama, from both

Lusaka and Ndola.

Bangweulu

Bangweulu (meaning ‘where the water meets the sky’) is

one of Africa’s, if not the world’s, leading wetland systems.

It consists of three distinct parts: Lake Bangweulu, the

Bangweulu Swamps and the Bangweulu floodplain.

Lake Bangweulu is about 75 km long and up to 40 km wide

and covers an area of about 3,000 sq km, although it is

very shallow. During the rainy season the lake expands and

overflows into the swamps and the floodplain. Bangweulu’s

many lagoons and channels act as a brake on the nearby

Luapala Valley becoming flooded in the rainy season.

Northern & central provinces

As might be expected, Bangweulu is a vital conserva-

tion area with a rich biodiversity of waterbirds and other

bird species as well as impressive herds of endemic black

lechwe and other animals such as elephant, buffalo,

tsessebe, reedbuck, oribi and sitatunga.

Birdwatchers can expect to see shoebill stork (seasonal),

wattled crane, spur-winged goose, sacred ibis, glossy ibis,

black-crowned night heron, and lesser-known species such as

the white-cheeked bee-eater, swamp flycatcher, pink-throated

longclaw, Fulbourne’s longclaw and Denham’s bustard.

Accommodation is provided by Shoebill Island Camp,

which has five thatched tents and reed cottages. The camp

is accessible only by boat for much of the year, but in the

dry season guests can drive to the camp. They can also go

and day and night game drives and walking safaris.

The park has several claims to fame. It is probably the best

place in Africa to spot the shy and aquatic sitatunga. There

monkey is another attraction. Leopard are common and no

longer face competition from lion and hyena. Then there

are two species of otter, plus caracal, serval and honey

badger as well as several species of mongoose.

Bat migration

But Kasanka is even more famous for its bat migration,

which occurs each November with the arrival of the first

rains. Up to eight million bats come to roost in what is

said to be the highest-density mammalian biomass on the

planet and the largest migration of any species. The bats

are attracted to the ripening of local wild fruit. In turn,

the bats provide a seasonal source of food for a variety

of predators.

Lastly, Kasanka offers some of Africa’s finest birdwatching,

with over 450 species recorded, many of them rare or

uncommon elsewhere in Zambia, in what is a compara-

tively small area.

There are only two permanent lodges in the park: Wasa,

on the bank of Lake Wasa, and Luwombwa, close to the

airstrip. There are also three campsites.

Nsumbu National park

Covering 2,000 sq km and situated on the shores of Lake

Tanganyika, Nsumbi National Park combines game viewing

with some of the world’s best freshwater fishing.

This is one of Zambia’s lesser-known parks and, in the past,

access to this remote area has been a problem; but recent

road improvements have gone a long way towards solving

this problem.

There is also an airstrip at Kasaba Bay for charter flights

from Lusaka and Ndola.

Like many other Zambian parks, Nsumbu is undergoing a

period of recovery and animal numbers are on the increase

once more. Reasonably common are sable, roan, buffalo,

bushbuck, reedbuck, waterbuck, serval, impala, hartebeest,

zebra, hyena, jackal, puku, warthog and, in the water,

crocodile and hippo. Rarer are the blue duiker, elephant,

lion, leopard and sitatunga.

The majority of visitors come for the fishing, however.

Ferocious tigerfish weighing up to 35 kg and even bigger

catfish and Nile perch can be found in plentiful numbers

in the lake.

copperbelt

The Copperbelt is Zambia’s industrial and

commercial heartland and the source of much

of the nation’s wealth. This area comprises five

towns of which the most prominent are Ndola, Kitwe,

Chingola, Luanshya and Mufulira.

Kitwe is Zambia’s second-biggest city and Ndola its

third-biggest. Kitwe is also the end of the line for

passenger rail services.

key commercial centres in industrial heartland

The importance of this area cannot be understated, but it

is dominated by mining rather than tourism, so accommo-

dation is geared to business travellers.

Perhaps the most picturesque of the five towns is Chingola,

home of the delightful Nchanga Golf Course, once rated 14th

best in the world outside the United States. Its owner, Konkola

Copper Mines, is committed to spending many millions of

dollars revamping and upgrading this truly great course, which

in 2011 staged the Zambian Open Golf Tournament.

Wildlife orphanage

About 60 km from Chingola is the Chimfunshi Wildlife

Orphanage, providing a home for over 100 orphaned

chimpanzees.

Ndola is the location of the region’s international airport,

with good connections to Lusaka, Johannesburg and

Nairobi. The town has a large business district as well as a

range of good shops, and one of its principal attractions is

the annual Zambia International Trade Fair in July.

Ndola is home to the Copperbelt Museum, with many

fascinating exhibits relating to the region’s mining sector.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial, just 10 km from Ndola,

marks the place where the United Nations Secretary

General died in a plane crash during the Katanga crisis in

Republic of Congo in 1961.
