Foreword

Welcome to the second edition of Destination Zambia, which is published on behalf of the Tourism Council of Zambia (TCZ).

The first publication in late 2006 set new standards in the quality of promotional material on and about Zambia and this new updated, greatly expanded and thoroughly revised edition provides a comprehensive showcase of the accommodation that’s available throughout our beautiful country.

It’s fair to say that Zambia is a destination for the connoisseur, for the traveller who is perhaps already familiar with Africa but now seeks something different, something a little less commercial and, perhaps, something a little more remote. It’s certainly more authentic and we like to describe Zambia as the “Real Africa”.

I also believe that the standard of accommodation across Zambia is extremely high and that our lodges and camps provide some of the best safari experi-ences in Africa – as well as some of the best bush cuisine. What’s more, and it’s something of which I’m especially proud, the guiding expertise in our 19 National Parks is second to none.

tastesandbudgets

In Livingstone, we have a mix of lodges and hotels that cater for those visiting the Victoria Falls and for all tastes and budgets – especially for those younger travellers seeking the fun and excitement of what has become one of the world’s leading adrenalin-fuelled destinations.

As for Lusaka, then our capital has some top-notch branded properties and these compare favourably with those found in any major city around the world. We also have a range of new properties that are set to expand the choice for business visitors or for those overnighting before or after a trip to the bush.

In fact, there’s never been a better time to visit Zambia so please come and see for yourself.

Zambia has come late to tourism. Since inde-pendence in 1964 a traditional reliance on earn-ings from copper meant that successive govern-ments did not prioritise tourism in the same way as many other Africa states had to in order to generate jobs and income.

This apparent oversight or, perhaps, lack of focus now has a silver lining as Zambia remains charmingly unspoiled by the kind of overdeveloped experience in some African destinations. And what little tourism development that has taken place has been largely sympathetic, upmarket in nature and certainly low impact – even around a major attraction of global importance such as the Victoria Falls.

To give an idea of Zambia’s untouched environment, Kafue, Zambia’s biggest National Park which covers an area the size of Massachusetts may have only 300

visitors at any one time. Even in the nation’s most popular park, South Luangwa, which many consider to be the best in Africa, it’s still possible to go for hours without seeing another human being.

PIoneered

The success of South Luangwa, where walking safaris were pioneered, is very much the model for other parks in Zambia and elsewhere. It’s excellent infra-structure (an all-weather airstrip with daily flights to Lusaka), tarmac road right up to the park entrance and careful park management make South Luangwa a rewarding experience for those wishing to see wild-life in large numbers. Yet visitors to the park remain low – especially away from the main gate. As the dry season continues, then animals are increasingly concentrated along the Luangwa River, making game spotting easy.

Zambia is often described as the “Real Africa” and it’s certainly true that this is a destination where tourism has had little or no impact and where visitors are warmly welcomed and still treated as something of a novelty or, at least, as honoured guests.

IntroduCtIon

Equally popular and with the added dimension of a range of river-based activities is Lower Zambezi National Park. The park and associated Game Management Area run along the north bank of the Zambezi, so visitors can enjoy a mix of game-viewing, fishing or boating.

Zambia has 19 National Parks and coupled with their associated GMAs they cover a combined area roughly equal to a third of Zambia’s total land area. In fact, Zambia is itself a vast country of around 752,000 sq km – that’s about the size of Texas. Of these 19 parks only three could be said to attract visitors in any numbers and many of the rest are remote and only accessible by a self-sustaining 4x4 vehicle.

This emphasis on quality puts Zambia in a strong position when selling itself to those looking for an authentic and un-crowded safari destination. Camps and lodges are of an extremely high standard

and have tended to attract a discerning and well-informed visitor probably already knowledgeable about wild or birdlife. But first-time visitors will not feel out of place or intimidated.

But Zambia is more than just wildlife and, in the Victoria Falls, the country has Africa’s greatest natural wonder. The nearby town of Livingstone is the gateway to the Falls, but also the base for a range of dare-devil pursuits that have burgeoned on and along the banks of the Zambezi. This in turn has attracted a different type and, perhaps, younger type of visitor to Zambia.

adrenaLInrush

From Livingstone it’s possible to arrange a wide variety of activities that are not for the faint hearted. Especially popular is white-water rafting through the Batoka Gorge below the Falls; the highest commer-cial bridge bungee jump in the world with the Falls as a terrifying background, as well as river-boarding, abseiling and white-knuckle micro-light flights that swoop over the river. Those seeking a more relaxing, but possibly more frustrating, time can play a round at the newly restored Livingstone Royal Golf & Country Club.

More than any other destination within Zambia, Livingstone offers accommodation tailored to all types of budget and not just for the well-heeled safari enthusiast – although that’s also available. It’s also very much Africa’s trendiest spot and a number of new properties have opened in and around the town and alongside the Zambezi to meet demand.

In the capital, meanwhile, expect to find internation-ally known hotels that reflect Lusaka’s position as a regional centre for conferences, exhibitions and semi-nars. A number of new hotels have opened in the city and more are on the way; easing the occasional scarcity of accommodation when some of these big international shows hit town.

PerFeCthostsFortheuLtIMatebushsaFarIMcBrides’ Camp is located at the confluence of the Mushingashi and Kafue rivers in a remote area of Kafue National Park.

Hosted by Chris and Charlotte McBride, this is the ulti-mate in genuine away-from-it-all bush experiences.

Ranked 161 on an authoritative list of the world’s top 1001 places to visit before you die, McBrides is ideal for the experienced visitor who has long since seen the Big Five and is looking for a different kind of Africa experience.

tradItIonaLLybuILt

The camp consists of seven secluded and tradi-tionally built thatched two-person chalets, all with en-suite but al fresco bathrooms. All beds are fitted with mosquito nets and each chalet has hot and cold running water and modern ablutions with a shower.

A veranda in front of each chalet allows guests to view the many species of birds and wildlife from the privacy of their own accommodation.

McBrides’ provides its guests with full board. An open dining room with views across an entire section of the Kafue River makes for an authentic bush dining experience. There is a separate bar and lounge area with similar views of the river.

Meals are provided. They consist of brunch, served after the early morning walk, and dinner in the evening. Morning coffee and tea are left on the veranda of chalets.

Guests are asked to bring their own alcoholic and carbonated drinks, although arrangements can be made for these to be purchased on behalf of guests when booking.

To take the McBrides’ concept even further, a more remote bush camp is located downstream on the banks of the Kafue. It is possible to spend a couple of nights in this rarely visited area or even to walk to it from McBrides’ main camp.

natIonaLaIrLIneoFFerswIder-than-everChoICeoFroutesTHE privately owned national carrier Zambian Airways began life in 1998 when state-owned Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines sold its subsidiary, Mines Air Services Ltd (MAS), to the private sector.

In effect, Zambian Airways is the trading name of MAS.

In 1998, when MAS was starting up its new passenger service under the name of Zambian Airways, it purchased two new 17-seat Beechcraft 1900D aircraft. Zambian Airways has been operating these two aircraft on domestic routes ever since.

rangeoFservICes

In 2006 Zambian Airways made the jump from purely domestic carrier – a sector in which it is still the largest operator – to international carrier offering a range of services from Lusaka Airport to foreign destinations using jet aircraft.

This move was achieved when Zambian Airways acquired two 737-200s. Today, the airline operates 92 flights a week from Lusaka to five domestic destina-tions in Zambia – Chipata, Livingstone. Mfuwe, Ndola and Solwezi – and a further 45 flights a week to three international destinations: Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Johannesburg (South Africa) and Lumbumbashi (Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Zambian Airways caters both for the leisure market, where it is a major contributor to the success of the nation’s inbound tourism, and for the business sector, where it provides vital trade links to neighbouring countries. The airline expects to carry some 250,000 passengers across its network in 2008.

The recent expansion of its route network now needs to be consolidated, but Zambian Airways is committed to a further expansion in the number of destinations it serves, both domestically and interna-tionally.

In the meantime, however, frequent flyers can benefit from Zambian Airways’ loyalty programme, Tweende Rewards (‘tweende’ means ‘let’s go’ in Tonga). This generous scheme means one free regional flight for every 10 return tickets purchased.

Baines’ river Camp

new standards oF Luxury on the ZamBeZi

Baines’ River Camp re-opened in March 2007 after extensive renova-tions and is now among the most luxurious and best-appointed properties and one that takes luxury to new heights in the Zambezi Valley.

Baines’ is an easy 35 minute flight or two hour’s drive

from Lusaka. The overland route also involves a 40 km boat trip down the Zambezi.

Set among imposing tamarind and jackalberry trees, the lodge is named in honour of Thomas Baines, a 19th century English explorer and artist who accom-panied David Livingstone on his trips along the Zambezi.

The Camp has eight colonial-style bush suites, with tented safari accommodation available for pilots and specialist guides. In keeping with Thomas Baines, each suite is named after an African explorer. Finished

with ceiling fans, air-conditioning, mini-bars, king-size beds, rich fabrics, leather and natural timbers, the Baines’ explorer suites offer every comfort and luxury.

Strict conservation policies are observed at all times and Baines’ offers a unique wildlife experience.

Fishing

Activities include game drives, with experienced guides, into the Lower Zambezi National Park, fishing for the hard-fighting tigerfish, (including specialised boats for the fly-fishing purist), canoe trips or just drifting downstream in among the numerous sand-banks as far as the energy of guests permits.

Or guests can just relax on the banks of Africa’s fourth largest river, looking over the water, its wildlife and prolific birdlife or across to the Mana Pools National Park World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe. Baines’ offers a unique, tailor-made experience in unspoilt Africa.

Now with new conference facilities, Baines’ River Camp is also an ideal venue for corporate team-building events, photographic workshops and fly-fishing clinics.

the smartest new address in Livingstone

Set in five hectares, the four-star The David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa opened in April 2008. The property is situated on one of the best waterfront sites in Livingstone and is located just 4km from the Victoria Falls and only 0.5km from the entrance to the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.

In choosing the name David Livingstone, the hotel’s owners took note of the historical significance of the famed Scottish missionary and explorer and his impact on the area. In fact, David Livingstone’s great-great-grandson gave permission for the hotel to use the Livingstone name.

river FaCing

The property comprises 72 river-facing rooms plus five luxurious presidential/signature suites. Colonial elements reflect in lofty scale with the rawness of texture, stone, wood and earth, contrasting with the richness of exotic gold, bronze, copper and ivory, once traded through ancient Arab routes. There are Zanzibar-style doors, screens and furniture that are

mixed with the spice colours of the orient and are beautifully positioned maximizing views of “siloka’ island, in close proximity to the Victoria Falls.

The hotel offers a restaurant, bar and conference facilities, (suitable for large groups), with a variety of safari excursions and activities in and around the falls. Plus a Camelot Spa for some special riverside pampering. The 144-seat, three-deck, luxury cruiser the Lady Livingstone enables guests to take a sunset trip on the Zambezi.

mushroom Lodge & the presidentiaL house

mushroom Lodge – Fit For a president

Mushroom Lodge is situated in South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. Modern, yet authentic African-styled thatched chalets grace the banks of a blue lagoon in the shade of ancient ebony trees.

In addition to the original presidential house, the newly renovated lodge, a former retreat for the first presi-dent of Zambia, Dr Kenneth D. Kaunda, now boasts 12 chalets which offers world class facilities to cater for the discerning traveller. Dr Kaunda still patronises the lodge on occasion even today.

Mushroom Lodge has hosted other high level dignitaries including the President of the Republic of Zambia Dr Levy Patrick Mwanawasa S.C and his family for their festive holidays. The lodge has also enjoyed its share of the limelight with well known celebrities such as the famous couple, Max and Lerato from the recent M-Net reality show Big Brother Africa.

For the keen historian, treasures abound in the Presi-dential house that Dr Kaunda himself occupied when he visited the lodge during his tenure as President. All the original furniture, fittings and beddings used by the first president are well maintained, preserved and available to the public should one wish to experience moments trapped in time in the very place where Dr. Kaunda worked, consulted, planned and relaxed.

The Mushroom Lodge site is also frequently visited by giants of the land. Elephants, buffaloes and hippos

often pay a courtesy call on the guests, offering a unique up close and personal experience from the comfort and safety of the Nsaka or swimming pool area. Excellent game viewing drives are available for the more adventurous where qualified and professional guides will gladly share their knowledge of South Luangwa’s prolific wildlife. Mushroom Lodge’s trade-mark sundowners on the banks of the Luangwa River will surely give moments and memories to cherish as the African sun descends into its hidden place and awakens the nocturnal wildlife. A spectacular sight indeed.

reFreshing

Other perks include an optional 24-hour butler service to ensure each stay is not only comfortable, but refreshing too. High-speed wireless internet connectivity, 24-hour security, modern bar and open-air boma add to the conven-ience in the luxurious wilderness that will surely please even the most discerning guest.

During the 2008 season, two new bush camps will be added to the lodge’s range of activities, where guests will experience walking safaris and a true experience of living in the wild.

Sanctuary’s portfolio comprises five camps or lodges: these are Sussi & Chuma in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park close to the Victoria Falls; the Chichele Presi-dential Lodge and Puku Ridge Camp, both in South Luangwa National Park; Zambezi Kulefu Camp in Lower Zambezi National Park; and Lochinvar Camp in Lochinvar National Park

Named after David Livingstone’s two faithful guides, Sussi & Chuma is Sanctuary’s flagship property. Once fully renovated this will be a 12-room property with two additional family houses.

The 10-room Chichele Presidential Lodge reopened in late 2007. It was once the game lodge of former Presi-dent, Dr Kenneth Kaunda. Puku Ridge Camp comprises seven spacious tents and re-opened May 2008.

Zambezi Kulefu Camp in Lower Zambezi reopened in June 2008 and consists of seven rooms and is situated in a remote downriver location.

Lochinvar Camp, meanwhile reopens in 2009. Lochinvar offers a totally different environment and is perfect for bird-watching and for observing the lechwe migration.

Kaingo Camp and Mwamba Bush Camp are the creations of the Shenton family, which has a proud history of three generations of wildlife conservation in southern Africa. Shenton Safaris is the smallest independent safari business in South Luangwa National Park.

Accommodation consists of four twin-bedded chalets and two honeymoon suites with huge four- poster beds, soaring skylights to the stars and outdoor bathtubs on the riverbank. All rooms have en-suite facilities. They are well ventilated, mosquito-proof and silently lit by solar power. These brick and thatch chalets are set

discreetly apart, each with a view over the Luangwa River. The large, centrally located, open-sided sitting room includes a dining area, a library and Kaingo’s renowned leadwood bar. By experiencing Kaingo Camp and transferring to the Mwamba Bush Camp, Shenton Safaris’ intimate Bushcamp, guests can enjoy the unique environs and character of both camps while maintaining quality service and continuity of staff.

The journey between the two camps is a relaxed three-hour walking safari filled with an abundance of game and interesting landmarks.

Kakuli is a seasonal camp on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers.

There are five spacious tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom. All of the tents overlook the river with stun-ning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of river.

There is a lovely chitenge overlooking the grazing lawn that leads down to the rivers.

This area of the park is renowned for its great game viewing and guests will usually split their time between walking and driving.

Situated in the Luamfwa Concession in South Luangwa National Park, Kalamu Tented Camp takes its name from the adjacent Chankalamu River, a seasonal tributary of the Luangwa.

The Camp overlooks a well-used crossing point on the Luangwa River. The deeper pools of the river and a nearby seasonal lagoon hold large pods of hippo and crocodiles. These waters attract elephant, buffalo, puku, impala, yellow baboon and other species.

Kalamu consists of four Meru-style en-suite tents, each one with a

different river outlook.

The central areas of the camp - the plunge pool and deck and shaded bar and dining area - maximise the sweeping river views. A deck built into a fallen fig tree provides an unusual lookout point. Heating and lighting is from solar power.

Activities at Kalamu focus on the Luangwa River with both game drives and walks exploring its banks, fringing woodland and open scrub.

Kapamba Camp is situated in a prime location on the picturesque Kapamba River, offering guests the chance to enjoy this untouched corner of the National Park.

The luxurious surroundings are about six kilometres up the Kapamba River, where guests can experience unforgettable sundowners while dipping their feet in the shallows of the river.

Each of the camp’s four chalets is individually designed to offer stunning views of the river. The open-fronted style ensures that

guests can enjoy uninterrupted game viewing from the privacy of their own room.

Overlooking the Kapamba River, the well-positioned deck offers an ideal viewing point for the abundant wildlife that comes to drink at the river and is the focal point of the camp. Walking safaris from the Kapamba are exceptional with numerous trails following the course of the river.

The camp comprises eight safari-style tents, each en-suite with both an indoor and outdoor shower.

The camp’s dining and bar area under a canopy of giant ebony trees and a pool and viewing deck area located to the side of the camp all

offer spectacular views of the lagoon that may once have been part of the Luangwa River.

Luwi Bushcamp is a seasonal camp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon.

Accommodation is in four huts made of grass and thatch with polished mud floors. A small thatch provides shade over the bar area. Daytime meals are served in the shade of the trees with a view of the grassy plain that normally attracts an abundance of wildlife, whilst dinner is taken under the stars accompanied by the sounds of the African night.

There is a large lagoon adjacent to camp teeming with hippo and crocodile. This permanent water source attracts game from far and wide making the camp area constantly busy with animals.

Luwi is one of the camps situated deepest in the Luangwa wilder-ness, lending the camp a rustic appeal and providing a truly African bush experience. Since there are very few roads in this area of the Park, the emphasis from Luwi is on walking.

Mchenja, meaning ‘the ebony tree’, is set beneath a magnificent grove of these trees on the banks of the Luangwa river.

Although this camp takes luxury in the bush to a level not previously seen in Zambia, it is designed to combine excellently with our other more rustic bushcamps.

The camp comprises five stylishly designed tents each under its own thatched roof, and each with private en-suite shower and bathroom facilities and inside bath. There is a small pool alongside the bar

within the thatched main chitenje, allowing guests to seek cool refuge during the heat of the day.

Mchenja is the perfect destination to complete a walking safari that has combined stays at a number of camps. Alternatively, those guests seeking a little more luxury and pampering may choose to combine a longer stay here, either walking or driving, with a number of nights at the main lodge.

LAST GReAT WiLdeRNeSS HAS 55 SpeCieS Of ANimALKafue National Park is Zambia’s largest national park and the second-largest in Africa, covering 22,400 sq km. It is home to some 55 different species of animal.

Kafue is Zambia’s last great wilderness and the focus for a number of new or redeveloped properties, particularly in the north of the park.

The park is well on its way to becoming Zambia’s third great wildlife destination after South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi.

The park is about four or five hours by road from Lusaka, with the last two hours or so on dirt roads. There are also some airstrips within the park.

Most of the park consists of miombo woodland. This high veld area is characterised by low density, high biomass animal populations.

Significant improvements in anti-poaching measures have greatly increased animal numbers in recent years, thus encouraging more camps and lodges to open within the park.

diSSeCTed

The park is dissected by the Kafue River, which eventually flows into the Zambezi. Many of the camps and lodges are located on the river’s edge but in a park the size of Massachusetts so these properties are few and far between. As in Lower Zambezi, this type of location allows for game drives and walks as well as fishing. And, unlike Lower Zambezi, with its strict return policy, the fish can be caught and brought back for dinner.

Another key feature of Kafue is flooded grassland in the north. This includes the Busanga swamp, which supports large herds of antelope such as red lechwe and is noted for its birdlife.

Located in Kafue National Park and surrounded by one of the largest areas of unspoilt wilderness anywhere in the world, Chunga Lodge overlooks the Kafue River and is some 310 km from Lusaka.

Chunga is 120km from the Busanga plains where the diversity of game renders it one of Zambia’s best kept secrets.

Kafue is also well known as an ornithological paradise with 460 species of birds and many activities are available from the lodge, including game drives, boat and fishing trips and walking safaris.

LeSS WeLL KNOWN NATiONAL pARKS STARTiNG TO dRAW viSiTORSZambia is a nation of 19 National Parks. Of these, only four – South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Mosi-oa-Tunya and perhaps Kafue – could be said to be frequently visited.

The other 15 parks are mostly, but not exclusively, in remote corners of the country, difficult to reach or require further investment by ZAWA or another outside agency before they can be considered attractive to visitors. What’s more, very few of these parks have any fixed accommodation, so they can be visited only by self-sustaining tourists with their own vehicles and camping equipment.

Others are more accessible. They include the 428 sq km Lochinvar National Park – a bird-watchers’ paradise only two or three hours from Lusaka – which is certainly worth a visit.

Conversely, and in contrast with its better-known counterpart to the south, the 4,636 sq km North Luangwa National Park has no year-round accommodation – although seasonal bush camps are now appearing and the park is attracting more visitors. Yet only four companies operate in this vast wilderness. The nearby 300 sq km Luambe National Park, between North and South Luangwa, is equally remote but now has a lodge.

Similarly, and thanks to the work of the Kasanka Trust, Kasanka National Park and the adjacent Bangweulu Wetlands can now boast two lodges and two camps. Kasanka is a pristine wilderness consisting of woodland, plains, lakes, rivers and swamps in the north of Zambia.

iNACCeSSibLe

Even more inaccessible, in south-west Zambia, are the 5,000 sq km Sioma Ngwezi National Park and adjacent Game Management Area covering some 35,000 sq km. The park has just one tented camp and is rarely visited. There are no roads, but this particular park has tremendous potential and is particularly strong in terms of bird-watching.

Another park that is growing in popularity, albeit slowly, is the 3,660 sq km Liuwa Plain, which may be Africa’s best-kept secret. With private finance funding now its development, this park contains a growing number of animals and is totally free from any form of commercialisation.

Other parks are good for activities such as fishing and birding. Sumbu, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, is excellent for angling, while Nyika and Blue Lagoon are, like Lochinvar, top spots for birders.

Shiwa Ng’andu is an English-style Mansion House built in remote central Zambia by an eccentric English man, Sir Stewart Gore Brown, and depicted in the book ‘The Africa House’ by Christina Lamb.

CApitAL iS An ideAL venUe for bUSineSS viSitorSUnlike most of Zambia’s hospitality sector, Lusaka is a destination largely dominated by business visitors or by those overnighting ahead of, or after, a trip to the bush.

Lusaka is not only the nation’s capital but also the principal centre for commerce and for international and domestic conferences and exhibitions. This is generally reflected in the type of accommodation available, which tends to cater for business visitors, conference attendees or for visiting or resident non government organisations (NGOs).

For this reason, Lusaka is blessed with some top-of-the-range internationally branded properties that can easily match those found in other African capital cities. Lusaka also has one or two home-grown hotels of its own as well as some agreeable out-of-town lodges that offer a bush-type experience – and resi-dent wildlife – yet are close to the city and can offer a perfect mix of business and pleasure.

As a comparatively modern city, the capital is not overly blessed with must-see sights, but its broad, elegant avenues and secure environment make it an easy place in which to walk and enjoy the warmth of a Lusaka evening. Given the city’s large expatriate community, it is no surprise that the city has a rather fine and growing range of restaurants as well as a pulsating nightlife

Shopping mALLS

In addition, Lusaka has two large shopping malls, Arcades and Manda Hill, that compare favourably with those elsewhere in Africa for style and variety. They are also popular daytime meeting places for a quick coffee or a light lunch. This is a clear sign that the Zambian economy is on the move and that the dark days of shortages – especially of luxury goods – are part of the dim and distant past.

gAtewAy to one of AfriCA’S greAteSt nAtUrAL wonderSLivingstone is the gateway to the Victoria Falls – Zambia’s greatest natural asset and one of Africa’s incomparable wonders.

The town provides many different – and often adrenalin-fuelled – ways to view the falls, ranging from a very damp walk across the front of the falls to hair-raising flights by micro-light aircraft that sweep over the edge and into the raging canyon beyond. Then there is bungee jumping from the bridge or white-water rafting down the Zambezi.

In recent years, Livingstone has grown into a buzzing border town – the main crossing point between Zambia and Zimbabwe – and has largely been restored to its former glory. It was the colonial capital until 1935 but lost its way in the 1970s and 1980s as the Zambian economy nose-dived. Now Livingstone is enjoying a renaissance as smart new hotels and fancy lodges spring up around the town and along the banks of the Zambezi.

Livingstone still has a colonial atmosphere reminis-cent of 1920s Northern Rhodesia, with wide avenues and tin-roofed buildings that tell of its settler heritage.

In addition, Livingstone’s venerable golf club has been totally refurbished, while retaining its original and elegant Edwardian style, and all 18 holes are back in play. The course had been closed for some years because of dwindling membership – a situation that has been dramatically reversed by the club’s new owners.

AdvAntAge

Livingstone also has the advantage of being close to the 66 sq km Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, just 5 km away. Despite its modest size, the park contains hippo, elephant, giraffe and even a couple of intro-duced white rhino.

The Zambezi River, upstream of the falls, provides a surprisingly tranquil setting for the sundowner trips that are so popular with visitors. These depart each evening from Livingstone, offering a delightful two-hour cruise along one side of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.

The 4,092 sq km Lower Zambezi National Park and its associated and similar sized Game Management Area (GMA) lies on the north bank of the Zambezi about three hours’ drive from Lusaka.

The river bank is dotted with a selection of rather splendid camps and lodges – some inside the park and others outside. Aside from game drives in the park and the GMA, the river offers a host of possi-bilities for water-borne game viewing, canoeing or fishing.

fiShing

In fact, some lodges cater as much for fishing as they do for game-watching or birding. The Zambezi has abundant stocks of tigerfish, catfish and bream, but inside the National Park and under the strict return policy of the local authorities these must be put back in the river rather than taken home for dinner.

In terms of game viewing, the Lower Zambezi is noted for its large herds of elephant, which also seem to dominate the water’s edge, and also for its huge and frequent hippo pods and basking crocodiles. Away from the river, the National Park is also popu-lated by lions and leopards as well as ungulates such as zebra, kudu, puku and impala.

priStine pArK iS A mAgnet for SerioUS gAme wAtCherSMany consider South Luangwa to be the world’s best game park – not only because of the high concentration of animals but also thanks to its careful management and comparatively limited numbers of visitors.

Most visitors are serious game watchers who go there to appreciate the still pristine nature of the park and to enjoy the generally top quality guiding and the high standard of food and accommodation.

At one time, visits to South Luangwa were confined largely to the dry season as most properties – and certainly all of the bush camps – closed more or less between November and April. Today this has all changed with almost every lodge opening throughout the “green” or “emerald” season, when attractive rates are on offer. Even some of the bush camps within the park and with good river access no longer close at this time of the year.

During the dry season water left behind by the seasonal rains evaporates and animals are forced to search for somewhere to drink from a diminishing

supply. For this reason, game is concentrated around a few waterholes and along the banks of the still-flowing Luangwa River.

In terms of game, South Luangwa is famous for its leopard populations, plentiful lion and one or two unique subspecies such as Crawshay’s zebra and Thornicraft’s giraffe. In addition, there are numerous hippo and crocodile along the banks of the Luangwa River. Less frequently spotted are increasingly rare African wild dogs and Cookson’s Wildebeest, a subspecies that is confined to the Luangwa Valley.

ConCentrAted

Most visitors fly into nearby Mfuwe Airport from Lusaka. From here it is a 20 to 30 minute drive through Mfuwe village to the park entrance. This is where most of the camps and lodges are concen-trated. Inside the park there are a few seasonal bush camps and some more permanent properties. These cater for small numbers. So, in contrast with many other African game parks, visitors can expect to find few other tourists – especially as they get farther away from the main Mfuwe Gate.

Over the past two years, the less-visited southern part of the park has been opened up, with new and upmarket camp operators moving into the area.

Remote Africa Safaris offer an unsurpassed walking experience in the Luangwa Valley. Chikoko Walking Trails in the South Luangwa National Park are conducted in a very beautiful area, rich in wildlife.

Chikoko Walking Trails operate slightly upstream of Tafika on the west bank of the Luangwa, utilising two exclusive bush camps named Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp.

Chikoko Tree Camp is situated 8km upstream of Tafika. As the name suggests the three twin chalets are raised above the ground,
