The First International Conference on the Exploration of Phobos andDeimos: The Science, Robotic Reconnaissance, and Human Exploration ofthe Two Moons of Mars is the first international meeting focused on Phobosand Deimos, and on how their exploration relates to that of the Moon,Mars, and the solar system beyond. The conference is an open internationalforum bringing together scientists, engineers, space exploration professionals,and students interested in discussing the status and advancement of theexploration of Mars' satellites, and the exploration of Mars itself and othernear-Earth objects (NEOs) through them.

THE EXHIBITIONThe exhibition “Destination: Mars” was curated specifically for theFirst International Conference on the Exploration of Phobos and Deimos.It features 26 Mars-themed artworks from 14 artists of the InternationalAssociation of Astronomical Artists (IAAA).

In this exhibition the visitor is invited to explore past, present, and futurevistas of Mars and its moons, imagine scenarios of living and working on thered planet, and observe Mars, Phobos and Deimos both from an orbitalperspective and in extreme close-up.

Every painting has a story, and in this catalogue you’ll find backgroundinformation for all artworks in the “Destination: Mars” exhibit written byeach IAAA artist.

We hope to inspire those who inspired us.

As the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and otherspace agencies around the world take concrete steps to return humans tothe Moon and plan their future journeys to Mars and beyond, the FirstInternational Conference on the Exploration of Phobos and Deimosrepresents a timely opportunity to collectively pause and think about thescientific significance of the two moons of Mars and the key roles theirexploration could play in the future.

ABOUT THE ARTISTJoe Bergeron has been a professional space artist inone capacity or another since 1976. His works haveappeared in numerous publications and in planetariumshows throughout the world. An accomplishedamateur astronomer, Bergeron considers the starssome of his closest friends, though they don't writevery often.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKThis digital work depicts future Mars vehicles whichare extrapolations of NASA's new lunar spacecraftwhich are under development. Given the Martianatmosphere, the artist supposes an aerodynamicascent stage might be desirable. A larger spacecraftfor the return to Earth presumably waits in Martianorbit.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKIt was rather a coincidence as I did this paintingabout a month before hearing about a request forPhobos/Mars images for this exhibition, and this ismy first painting of Phobos. I decided to show bothMars and Phobos in gibbous phases for added interestand to show light against dark. Also showing themwith different colours and shapes in front of eachother created an interesting balance.

ABOUT THE ARTISTI was born profoundly deaf in 1959 and have had alife-long interest in art and the natural sciences aswell as many other subjects, but astronomical art isspecial to me. I am a Fellow of the IAAA (InternationalAssociation of Astronomical Artists) and my paintingshave been published in various magazines and booksand have been exhibited around Great Britain; thisis my first painting to be exhibited in the States. Iwork full time in my own gallery which is open tothe public.My pictures are traditionally painted using acrylics.

ABOUT THE ARTISTI’m a recently retired A/V technician who lives inScotland with my wife and way too many cats. I’vepainted stars and planets for most of my life. Imigrated a few years ago from the more traditionaloils and acrylics to a variety of digital programs andnow do most of my work in that medium. Forinspiration I look to the fantastic photographs takenby H.S.T. and the other great telescopes we take somuch for granted these days. But most of all I’minspired by going out of my back door on a crispwinter’s night, looking up and out, and just lettingmy mind wander.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKI also enjoy transposing local landscapes offplanet.The landscapes in both the Mars paintings are basedon local scenery.“Olympos Station” shows a group of astronautssetting up an automatic weather station on thelower slopes of Mons Olympos. Rather than theusual heavy tracked vehicle I considered that a seriesof two wheeled “boxcars” with a semirigid butflexible membrane between them might be moresuitable for the terrain, each wheel having it`s owndriving mechanism, each “box” capable of beingisolated from the others.“North Wall” depicts an astronaut taking groundreadings on the floor of Valles Marineris. I thoughtI’d try my hand at doing a more fanciful, sciencefictiony, environmental suit. There is, however, nolocal scenery in “Rope Walk”. Because of the lowgravity on Phobos, I imagine it might be quite difficultto take a step never mind walk about on thatmoon, so in this painting I assume that among alltheir other accomplishments astronautswill also have to learn the use of pitons andcarabiners.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKArgyre SeaSome research suggests that the Argyre impact basinwas once ringed with glaciers feeding into a shallowsea. This painting depicts such a Martian past, witha more dense atmosphere scattering light across amuch-bluer sky. Phobos and Deimos are both visibleabove.

Mars VolcanoMost volcanoes on Mars are either shields or smallcones. Still others are eroded, steep-sided strato-volcanoes. Here, a volcanic eruption triggersoutgassing as lava comes into contact with subsurfaceices.

Polar ImpactAn asteroid impacts the Martian northern polar cap.In the foreground we see layered terrain, based onsimilar morphology of Icelandic glaciers. Someterraforming scenarios suggest directing carbonaceouschondritic asteroids into the poles to darken thesurface. The sunlight would then heat the darkenedice, releasing CO2 and water vapor.

ABOUT THE ARTISTArt has always been at the center of Robin Hart'slife. Along with it, almost entwined like a doublehelix, is her love of space and the cosmos. Born intothat generation of boomers that grew up with thespace age, from the launch of the first satellites,through the manned space program and beyond tothe outer reaches of the solar system; she hasfollowed these events with great enthusiasm. Duringher college years, Robin was encouraged by one ofher professors to incorporate something she waspassionate about into her art. Her love of space wasthat passion. When she began to integrate that subjectmatter into her work, there was an explosion ofcreativity that has continued over the years. Robincounts herself among the interpretive space artists.She often realistically renders a space environment,but adds something terrestrial to it to it or hassomething terrestrial that seems to be morphinginto space. She uses these themes to illustrate herpassion, emotion and wonderment of theextraterrestrial environments she envisions.Sometimes she likes to add a touch of humor aswell. Robin Hart has had 2 one woman art showsat the Griffith Observatory, been in many space artexhibits, exhibited her work internationally and hasbeen a member of the IAAA for many years.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKThis surreal painting ponders the age old questionabout the chances of life on Mars. The flower andthe helix shaped floating rock suggest the potentialfor life yet to be discovered on the red planet.

ABOUT THE ARTISTWilliam K. Hartmann is recognized internationallyas a painter, scientist, and writer. He is especiallyknown for paintings of astronomical subjects basedon recent discoveries. These paintings have beenpublished in magazines including Natural History,Smithsonian, Science and the Economist and othermagazines in Japan, Russia, France, Germany, England,and Italy. In 1997, Hartmann was named first winnerof the Carl Sagan Medal of the American AstronomicalSociety, in recognition of his communication ofscience to the public, in part through his artwork.Asteroid 3341 is named after him in recognition ofhis planetary research, and he was given the LucienRudaux Lifetime Achievement Award of theInternational Association of Astronomical Artists.A 2007 profile in the leading U.S. scientific journal,"Science," was titled "Renaissance Man of the SolarSystem."Hartmann holds a Ph.D. in Astronomy and M.S. inGeology, both from the University of Arizona, anda B.S. in Physics from Pennsylvania State University. Although his paternal grandfather was a painter, heis primarily self-taught and has been painting sincethe early 1970s.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKThis painting was done for the1984 book "Out ofthe Cradle" by William Hartmann, Ron Miller, andPamela Lee. The book described goals of humanspace exploration in the 21st century, in a contextof discovery and possible energy and materialshortages on Earth. The painting shows a futurespacecraft moving past Phobos toward Mars. Thepainting depicts large craters and crater chains onPhobos, and the striking difference in color betweenPhobos and Mars.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKDespite much number crunching and head scratchingthe origin of Mars' two moons Phobos and Deimos presents an outstandingproblem for planetary scientists. One attractive possibility is that bothmoons are asteroids which became gravitationally bound to Mars sometimein the early history of the solar system.In this painting, Phobos and proto-Mars are backlit against sunlightscattered by dust grains in the inner solar system. Mars casts a shadowthrough an extended envelope of material left over from its formationand sports an atmosphere temporarily choked with impact generateddust. Disturbed from its original location in the main asteroid belt Phobosmakes another close encounter with Mars but this time will not escapefrom that planets gravitational embrace. As a new satellite of Marssubsequent passages will modify Phobos' position until it occupies thedecaying orbit we see today. On Phobos the large impact crater Stickneyis deep in shadow while the night-side is briefly illuminated as a smallpiece of high-speed debris from the outer solar system slams into thesurface to make yet another crater.

ABOUT THE ARTISTGarry L. Harwood was born in 1959 in London,England and studied for a career as a marine biologistand physical oceanographer. After two decades inthe jewelery industry he decided to return to hisroots and make painting his chosen profession. Hisinterest in the natural and physical sciencesoccasionally influences his artwork and in this guisehis astronomical paintings are an attempt to visualizeand communicate scientific data to the public. Hiswork has been widely exhibited and is in privatecollections world wide. When not getting lost insome remote corner of the globe, he divides histime between London and the far west of Cornwallwhere he can often be found painting on the clifftops a short distance from his studio. He is a lifetimemember and Fellow of the International Associationof Astronomical Artists.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK'View Of Home' won First Place in The Mars Society'international competition in August 2004. Hettickexplains "the piece was something I just had to paint- it pictures very simply the huge vastness of space,the loneliness of exploration, the potential dangerof being in a strange, unknown land and utterly alonein both time and distance from other humanassistance – and that single astronaut just has to beconcerned about every decision he will be calledupon to make.” ‘View Of Home’ was also selectedto be the backdrop piece for the on-stage guestspeaker at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of ThePlanetary Society. Ray Bradbury was the speakerand we exchanged letters regarding howthe piece had just seemed so appropriate and fittingfor the occasion.

ABOUT THE ARTISTThe entire universe is the subject for Frank Hettick’sphoto-realistic depictions of distant planets, moons andalien landscapes. The artist’s home-base and studio arenow located in the high desert of Central Oregonalthough he travels extensively to exotic locationsstudying the geology and gaining inspiration for hisunusual art pieces. His attention to lighting and use ofdetail in his works cause many viewers to believe his“other-worldly” paintings are fine photographs! However- the subjects Frank renders have never been seen orphotographed by any human before. His goals includeencouraging today’s youth towards the same enthusiasmfor space and other worlds as he had in those early daysbefore the Apollo missions - when he was growing up.Hettick is a member of the International Associationof Astronomical Artists; The National Space Society; TheMars Society; The Planetary Society; sits on the SpaceArt Committee of Federation of Galaxy Explorers; anda Honorary Member conferred by Star- Ships of theThird Fleet writer’s group.

ABOUT THE ARTISTAlthough an Air Force Photographer by trade I havebeen interested in space most of my life and haveproduced artworks on a professional basis for thelast 5 years. MRO in OrbitMars Reconnaiscance Orbiter sports the mostsophisticated camera ever to be used on the RedPlanet. Here it passes over Mars’ enormous VallesMarineris canyon, discovered and named after Mars’sfirst successful orbital mission, Mariner 9.

Mariner 6 and 7 ImagesOriginally released as black and white these colourrestored Mariner 6 and 7 images provided some ofthe first close up looks of the Martian surface. Bysheer bad luck both probes completely missed Mars’enormous valleys, volcanoes and outflow channels.Scientists falsely believed that Mars always had beena dead, cratered world similar to our moon.

The Deimos Moon Basedigital print

ABOUT THE ARTWORKThis artwork was created for Scientific AmericanMagazine for an article entitled: To Mars by Way ofits Moons by S. Fred Singer.

This three view image, combined with the polarphotography below, gives us a good handle on wherewe are going. The chosen crater indicated in thisimage is nearly 1/8 mile in diameter, making it agood target for landing. It sits just forward of thenearly horizontal polar table with respect to theequator and is tipped slightly toward Mars for agood view while providing lateral and aft shieldingwith its walls. The rotating solar array can beanchored on the smooth plain just behind and abovethe habitat/lab crater (to the left in the North and90° views) at highest latitude, less than 1/10 mileaway, though I am exploring methods of locating itright on top of the lab.

ABOUT THE ARTISTI’ve been interested in astronomy and space sinceI was a kid and marveled at the art I saw in booksand magazines about space, space flight and spaceexploration. I read everything I could get my handson. Perhaps one day I could go.Now I do. Little did I know that later I would becomea space artist myself and inspire new generations toexplore space and, in so doing, I visualize myself inthe place that I am painting in order to convey thesense of what it’s like to live and work in space.

ABOUT THE ARTISTAfter a 33 year career at the Lawrence BerkeleyNational Lab writing research and developmentcontracts, Julie Rodriguez Jones left corporate Americato pursue her art full time in 2003. Her interestsin space and space art began at an early age but shedid not seriously pursue her art until late in hercareer. After college and while at LBNL she studiedart with Arngunner Yr, Lien Truong and GwynethWelch. Julie’s art incorporates that initial trainingbut now she primarily uses a digital airbrush. Julie’sart includes a wide variety of award winning piecesfrom her space art and flowers to her liturgical art.She has been published both nationally andinternationally including book covers, corporate art,magazines and more.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKWhen the Mars Exploration rovers, Spirit andOpportunity, began transmitting images of therock surfaces after having been ground by the rockabrasion tool, Julie found them to be quite unusualand equally beautiful. This is an abstract/representational piece of the many images sent toEarth. Joel Hagen, Fellow IAAA, says about thispiece, “For my money, it ranks high in the top 10paintings ever produced by IAAA artists. Really aremarkably fine work.” This is a limited edition ofonly 99 pieces.

ABOUT THE ARTISTGavin’s lifelong interests in art and space convergeon regular occasions. He views space as the extensionof nature beyond Earth but enjoys depicting naturalwonders down here too. Human endeavour is alsoa source of inspiration.Light, texture and form he finds intriguing andrecreating this in paint brings with it a closerunderstanding of the subject.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKMERA depiction of a Mars Exploration Rover cresting ahill. Looking towards a Martian sunset. Its solar panelswill shortly be deprived of the starlight that alsopowers an inquisitive neighbouring planet. Aforeground rock bears the scar of its grinding tool.

Phobos LandingAfter some robotic explorations to lay thegroundwork humans arrive to fine-tune studies andconstruction. Here a large spacecraft, a mixture ofspace station and Lander rests idly on the surfaceof Phobos while a geologist studies some interestingdetail in a boulder. Behind them Mars dominates theheavens.

ABOUT THE ARTISTI was born in Indiana in the USA just a few months afterSputnik 1 made world history. I now live near Chicago andam a freelance computer graphics artist, in addition to whateverother gigs I can drum up. I've been a space enthusiast andinterested in astronomy for as long as I can remember.Professionally, I've worked as a graphic artist, photographer,computer programmer, web designer, instructional designer,and projected media designer. My space art strives towardphotorealism, hopefully with the resultant image being moreinteresting and informative than anything a still camera canproduce. My work has been described as "sober," and that Itake as a complement.

ABOUT THE ARTWORKIn these computer graphic images I indulge in two of myinterests: the worlds beyond Earth as the ultimate expressionof nature's wilderness, and the many and varied details ofmanned space exploration and technology. I've rendered eachof Mars' exotic moons with an attention to their orientationto, and distance from, the martian surface. I've also attemptedto contrast the stark barren surfaces of Phobos and Deimoswith Mars' dynamic environment.The manned exploration images suggest how missions toMars may be realized within the next 30 to 60 years. Obviously,these missions will be all about the logistics and details ofgetting there, living and working effectively in a very hostileenvironment, and getting home. ABOUT THE ARTWORKTwo astronauts explore the rugged surface near theNorth Pole of Phobos with Mars looming on thehorizon. The mother ship, powered by solar energy,orbits Mars while astronauts inside remotely operaterovers on the Martian surface. The explorers havelanded on Phobos in a small excursion vehicle thatfires a line into the soil to anchor the unit. Theastronaut on the right is examining a one thousandpound boulder (Earth pounds) which weighs a merepound in the low gravity of Phobos.

The resulting photorealisticimages give the viewer a sense of “being there.”
