W elcome to beautiful North Central Washing-ton and lower British Columbia, one of the greatest “undiscovered” and unspoiled rec-reational areas in the Pacifi c Northwest. By traveling north from Wenatchee along the

many scenic byways like the Okanogan Trails Byway on the In-ternational Discovery Loop, you will experience two countries, many cultures and unique history and heritage. The area abounds with ghost towns, historical landmarks, aban-doned (and active) mines, camping, fi shing, hunting, boating, swimming, golfi ng, rock climbing, sightseeing, wildlife viewing, horseback riding—you name it! Canada’s only desert region lies just north of the border, in southern British Columbia from Osoyoos to Kelowna. The area is not only Canada’s fruit basket, it also has a booming wine industry. There are wine festivals and tastings and wineries in the Osoyoos and Oliver areas welcome visitors. Back in the United States, north central Washington is staking out a wine industry as well, with established and new wineries from Chelan to Oroville. Although fi shing and hunting remain two of the biggest recre-ational pastimes in the area, watchable wildlife activities like birdwatching are increasing in popularity. This region offers a variety of fl ora and fauna for wildlife fans to explore. Even though the area is semi-desert, the region offers several fi ne lakes for swimming, boating, jet skiing and fi shing. Water recreation choices range from the international Lake Osoyoos to internationally famous Lake Chelan, from the mighty Colum-bia River to the undiscovered Similkameen.

If wide open spaces are the thing, the wide-open plateau is the spot; the drive between Bridgeport and Waterville, over the top as it were, is full of straight roads and big skies. Orondo, along the Columbia River, offers fruit stands and a growing re-tirement and vacation spot, with new homes going along the highway to take advantage of recreation on the river and the warm summer sun. The Columbia, Methow and Okanogan rivers provide excellent fi shing, as do the many local lakes. There’s good water for ski-ing or just a relaxing boat ride. With spring and the snowmelt, smaller local rivers provide plenty of good whitewater rafting, then calm down in the height of summer, making for fun tub-ing. How about taking a hike, or maybe a mountain bike ride, maybe even a horseback ride? Try one of the many fun and interesting trails in the Methow Valley— more than 400 miles for the choosing. Or try the Similkameen River Trail on the old Great Northern Railway bed and the Whistler Canyon Trails near Oroville. Both are legs of the Pacifi c Northwest National Scenic Trail. Summer days can hit 100 degrees or more, so one of the rivers, the swimming holes or local pools might be ap-pealing. Golfers have a plethora of choices, from the Oroville Golf Club to Lake Woods in Bridgeport, Alta Lake near Pateros to Omak and Okanogan and Chelan, as well as fi ne courses in Osoyoos and Oliver. Camping and RV facilities are available at numerous locations from Waterville to Oroville. Again, welcome to north central Washington and lower British Columbia. We hope you will stay a while and enjoy all the area has to offer. Just remember to bring your camera.

OROVILLE

Oroville is four miles south of the Canadian border and the nearby 24-hour Port of Entry, the busiest in Eastern Washington.The town lies north of the confl uence of two rivers – the Similkameen and Okanogan – and

is on the south end of Lake Osoyoos, an international lake shared by Oroville and Osoyoos, B.C.Originally noted for mining, cattle and timber, today Oroville is better known for its apples and cherries and as the birthplace of Washington’s apple industry. Oroville has award-winning wineries and boasts a fi ne German-style microbrewery.May Festival is the second Saturday in May and the Old Depot Museum and Visitor Center open that day as well.Tourism and recreation take advantage of the area’s natural beauty with mountains, lakes and two rivers. Two very fi ne city parks are situated on Osoyoos Lake – Oroville’s Veteran’s Memorial Park is located at the north end of town. The former state park has a boat-launch, as does Deep Bay Park, about one and a half miles north of the city limits. Osoyoos Lake offers swimming, boating, sailing, water and jet skiing, as well as fi rst-class fi shing. Or you can just sit on the beach and relax. From the lake you can paddle your canoe or kayak south down the Okanogan River and stop by Oroville’s Riverfront Park.

The Can Am Powerboat Races, Oroville Heritage Day and the Tumble Weed Film festival all take place in the summer.

There is golfi ng at the Oroville Golf Club; its nine-hole course is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging small courses in the state.

Hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding are available on the Similkameen River Trail on the old Great Northern Railroad route, which starts at the trailhead on the west side of town, passes a working vineyard, crosses a steel trestle bridge and continues along the historic railroad bed. Just south of town is the Whistler Canyon Trail with trailhead just off Highway 97. Both trails are well maintained and part of the Pacifi c Northwest National Scenic Trail. T here are many small communities in the Okanogan Highlands enjoyed both for their recreational opportunities as well as their history and culture.Chesaw is an old gold mining town, was named

for Chinese miner Joe Che Saw and is 21.5 miles east of Oroville. The town has a general store with gas pumps, tavern and art gallery. The tiny town’s population has dwindled to just a handful, but each year the family-oriented July 4th Rodeo is held. In August, the town invites people to participate in one of the many activities planned around the “Hot August Nights” celebration.But there is more to Chesaw. There’s beautiful scenery and wildlife, hiking, camping and fi shing in the National Forest and at nearby Lost, Beaver and Beth lakes.Molson was initially fi nanced by John W. Molson of Canadian brewing and banking fame. The three-story brick schoolhouse is now the Molson School Museum. It houses artifacts and a souvenir shop. Many exhibits refl ect the area’s mining and farming past and other facets of rural life. Today, the original townsite is a ghost town and is the Old Molson Outdoor Museum with a variety of early day town buildings and agricultural equipment. Both museums are sponsored by the county historical society and manned and maintained by a local group of dedicated volunteers. Fishing and camping number among the many recreation

possibilities around the Aeneas Valley area. There are several small lakes located along Aeneas Valley Road -- Round, Long and El lakes. Crawfi sh and Lyman lakes are not far away either. The community of Wauconda, 24 miles east of Tonasket, is centered along Highway 20 like an oasis, inviting and colorful after the vast miles of ranches and rolling hills that surround it. There is a tiny U.S. Post Offi ce, grocery store and café that harkens back to a simpler time. It’s only a short drive to Lost, Beaver and Beth lakes, which offer some of the areas best fi shing and camping opportunities. This same area offers some of the most varied hunting you will fi nd anywhere. You can also enjoy boating, swimming, hiking, snowmobiling and other winter sports.


TONASKET

All roads lead to Tonasket

T onasket, with a population of 1,000, is approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canadian border. It is the center of a large agricultural area, with apples, cattle and timber being the most prevalent products

The Many Lakes Recreation Area, about 15 minutes west of town, is famous for its fi shing, hunting and wildlife viewing. The town hosts several annual events, including the Founder’s Day Parade and Rodeo, Father’s Day Fly-in, Okanogan River Garlic Festival, and Demo Derby. Its Farmer’s Market is open for business every Thursday in the middle of town, and the Community Cultural Center brings music, art and cultural events to the area on a regular basis.Tonasket is intersected by state Highways 97 and 20. Highway 97, an international roadway, links the town with Canada to the north, and California on the extreme south. Highway 20 is an east/west route from the Pacifi c Coast via the North Cascades Highway, to Republic and Spokane.The original town site of this western village was located on the west side of the Okanogan River, about one mile south of its present location. The town was once called Parry’s Ferry, or Parry’s Landing, for Watkins W. Parry, an early pioneer settler who had extensive holdings in the area. The present site of the town was purchased from the Bonaparte Land Company in 1910 and was soon platted. It was named Tonasket after Chief Tonasket of the Okanogan Tribe. The town offers tourist information in the summer with a helpful staff at the Tonasket Business and Resource Center right on Highway 97. Center of the Many Lakes Recreation Area

L ocated 16 miles northwest of Tonasket or 16 miles southwest of Oroville, the quaint little town of Loomis rests in the center of the “Many Lakes” area. While the town is small, the area draws folks from around the

state and the province of British Columbia from the start of fi shing season in the spring until the end of hunting season in late fall. Throughout the summer, visitors come and enjoy a variety of camping sites along one of the many lakes or even in the coolness of the local mountains along a meandering stream. Loomis is the center of some of the best fi shing and hunting in the state. The trout and bass are large and the mule deer abundant. Nearby lakes include Spectacle, Palmer and Whitestone. Other fi shing opportunities abound in the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area in lakes and Touts Coulee Creek. Chopaka is a well-known fl y-fi shing-only mountain lake.Although small, many amenities can be found within a few short blocks. Nearby wildlife is abundant with bighorn sheep and deer that can sometimes be seen strolling through town, black bear and mountain goats can also be spotted. In winter people are drawn to the area for the hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails in the mountains.

Omak has events planned for every season of the year. In summer there’s the Stampede and World Famous Suicide Race which has been held since 1935. The event features four rodeo performances

followed by the Suicide Race, where horse and rider plunge down a steep embankment and cross the Okanogan River for the push to the fi nish line. There is also a genuine Native American encampment complete with over 100 teepees, native dance competitions with dancers in full traditional dress.

The town is full of recreation options, many at the 72-acre East Side Park. The park includes three softball fi elds, the Stampede and Rodeo Arena, an olympic-size pool, two soccer fi elds, Babe Ruth and Little League diamonds, covered picnic area, archery range, horseshoe pits, lighted tennis courts and a basketball court. Add to this acres and acres of green lawn and a 72-site full hook-up RV park and tent area, and the possibilities for fun are many.

Riverside, about six miles north, is one of the most important towns in Okanogan County’s early history. A quaint and picturesque town, it sits nestled between the Okanogan River and Highway 97.

Riverside was once a booming commercial center. As head of navigation for the Okanogan River, goods transported via steam paddle wheeler up the Columbia and further up the Okanogan could not get past that point. So Riverside became an important connection between the then isolated county and more populated areas of the region.

Okanogan, incorporated in 1907, became the county seat of the largest county in area in Washington in 1914.Highlights for the town include the annual county fair, Sunny Okanogan Days and Harvest

Festival.Being the county seat, Okanogan is also the home to the historic Okanogan County Courthouse. There is also the Okanogan County Museum, which features an extensive history of the county, as well as many ‘Frank Matsura’ photographs from the famous Japanese frontier photographer who made the Okanogan his home before the turn of the last century. The museum is located adjacent to the Legion Park, which can accommodate overnight RV parking (no hookup) for a small fee.

Bridgeport offers four city parks, lavish shade and picnic areas. Berryman Park boasts expansive lawns, a barbecue area with covered picnic area, basketball court, play area and the city swimming pool open in the summer. Marina Park is a peaceful, overnight

campground featuring a breathtaking view, marina, boat launch, play area, restrooms, showers and plenty of green grass for picnics and lazy days.For anglers, Bridgeport offers Rufus Woods Lake for Triploid Trout, Walleye, native Rainbow and Bass. Lake Wood has a nine-hole golf course and trails for hiking and biking. Bridgeport State Park is a 748-acre camping park with 7,500 feet of freshwater shoreline on the lake behind Chief Joseph Dam on the Columbia River. P ateros, a four-season destination, was founded in 1913 and will be celebrating its centennial this year. Perfectly located on the banks of the Columbia and Methow rivers, it offers everything an avid outdoors person would love. Hiking, biking, swimming,

boating and sightseeing are just a few of the possibilities, not to mention the snowmobiling, skiing and hunting later in the year.For the fi sherman in the family, Pateros has one of the best fi sheries in the state. Steelhead, salmon, walleye and bass fi shing are all available.There are several parks to give visitors a wide variety of picnic and playground choices. On the Pedestrian Mall there is a new splash pad for those of all ages to play and cool off by and the swim area has been newly refurbished. Visit the New City Museum at city hall and then take a self-guided history tour along the park trail under shady trees and visit the many places to eat along the way. Maybe you would like to just pull up a park bench and relax while watching the wildlife play along the riverbanks.Pateros has eight boat docks and two boat launches available on Lake Pateros, the reservoir created behind Wells Dam. There are close to 30 miles of uncrowded water to explore and play on and curbside camping is also available. THE METHOW VALLEY, TWISP AND WINTHROP

W inthrop and Twisp are picturesque towns perched high in the Cascades and are popular tourist and recreation destinations. The western-themed Winthrop has

unique artisan shops and boardwalk sidewalks offering year around activities for everyone. Winthrop’s sister city Twisp has hiking and biking trails, rock climbing, camping and river rafting. The entire Methow Valley has a variety of recreation during the summer months. There’s fl yfi shing and reel fi shing available through public access to the Methow River. Kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, bird watching and camping are all recreation highlights of the valley. Famous for it’s groomed crosscountry skiing trails, there is also tubing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing in the winter. You can dig for fossils at the rich Stone Rose fossil beds with the family and go home with a piece of prehistoric history, fi sh or swim in one of the area’s many lakes and streams and horseback ride into the forest, hike the Kettle Crest Trail or

one of the other 430 miles of trail in the area. The Republic area has 21 campgrounds around lakes and streams. Something is happening almost every week; stock car races every other weekend in the summer, Prospector’s Day, rodeos, draft horse shows or Winterfest. Located next door to the Stonerose Interpretive Center is the Republic Historical Center. Visitors can walk through the Kaufman Cabin, peruse the extensive collection of Republic’s historical photos and listen to fi rsthand accounts of times past from the volunteers who operate the small museum. Between Republic and Curlew, alongside Highway 21 North, is the Antique Car and Truck Museum. The museum has numerous antique cars, including a 1925 Howard Cooper, one of only four ever built and a 1926 Yellow Knight, one of the last three known to exist. Built in 1903, the historic Ansorge Hotel in Curlew is a museum. The hotel retains many of its original furnishings and all of its charm.

Nestled in the forested hills of Ferry County is pristine Curlew Lake. Curlew Lake is a favorite destination for fi shermen, sporting different varieties of trout. The park features 82 campsites, some of which have power, water and sewer hook-ups, a roped-off swimming beach, boat ramp, trailer dump, restroom and hot showers. The Ansorge Hotel at Curlew, Washington is the only old hotel still standing in Ferry County. It is a wood frame structure with tin siding made to resemble stone, constructed in 1903 when the Great Northern Railroad was just coming into the country and is located adjacent to the tracks. The ground floor contains a lobby, dining room, kitchen and large billiard or game room. Nine bedrooms, one bathroom, and a sitting room comprise the upstairs. Most of the original furniture is on display, as well as dishes, cloth-ing, pictures and numerous memorabilia.

Orondo, a small community in Douglas County at the base of Pine Canyon is named after a Great Lakes Indian and was fi rst settled in the 1880s. A growing community along the Columbia River, it is well known as a fruit producing area with

apples, cherries, pears and peaches. There are several fruit stands along U.S. Highway 2 that offer travelers a chance to stop and enjoy some of the local produce.The Orondo Park provides access to the Columbia River, as do Lincoln Rock State Park and Daroga State Park.More recently it has become a vacation and retirement spot with new homes going up along the Columbia, which offers many recreational opportunities like fi shing, boating, water and jet skiing and relaxing under the warm summer sun.


OSOYOOS/OLIVER

Osoyoos and Oliver, B.C. are located just north of the U.S.-Canadian Border in Canada’s only desert region.Osoyoos, who recently trademarked “Canada’s Warmest Welcome” as their logo, is just fi ve miles

north of Oroville. The friendly tourist town has the warmest average temperature in Canada and the warmest freshwater lake in the country. There are many public boat launches and the lake is accessible through any of four sandy public beaches.In addition to swimming, boating, jet skiing, fi shing and tanning on the beach, there’s shopping downtown, fi ne restaurants, golf, tennis, water slides, hiking and horseback riding – and that’s just in the summertime. On the northeast side of the lake is Canada’s only desert area, featuring a variety of fl ora and fauna only found in this specifi c environment. Many rare species of birds, bats and cacti survive here. The Desert Centre and The Desert Cultural Centre are a must see for anyone traveling to Osoyoos.Osoyoos is also part of Canada’s Desert Wine Country and there are many wineries with tasting rooms to enjoy. The Okanagan Spring Wine Festival helps celebrate the area’s wines and is held the fi rst week of May. The Okanagan Fall Wine Festival is held the fi rst week of October.Oliver is 16 miles north of the U.S. border. It is the “Wine Capital of Canada” and has numerous wineries with tasting rooms. Oliver also has the Festival of the Grape in the fall as a kick off to the Fall Wine Festival. In addition, Oliver hosts the Sprint Triathlon in June.

The early spring, hot summers and late-arriving fall, coupled with short, mild winters make Oliver a year ‘round playground. The town is a friendly place where families can come and fi nd excellent camping, fi ne accommodations and a variety of shopping opportunities.
