In the beginning...In 2004, “ART IS…,” the first planned show featuring five local artists in five open studios, took place on one floor of the north building at 1111 Godfrey S.W. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Timely press coverage, invitations throughout Michigan, much word of mouth and a little madness, this cold and rainy October weekend welcomed more than 500 people. The success of this first event gave birth to what has become an annual feast of the arts called DESTINATION:1111.

The newly coined event DESTINATION:1111, still at 1111 Godfrey, has grown to become an annual art happening. In 2005, it grew from five studios and five artists to more than 25 open studios, encompassing both the north and south buildings on the 1111 site to more than 50 artisans in a variety of media. Surpassing all expectations, this event saw estimates in the Grand Rapids Press of crowds reaching more than 1,500 people for the entire weekend. By Sunday night, that number had at least doubled all original forecasts.

Local coverage in the Grand Rapids Press, On The Town Magazine and radio stations highlighted the large number of participating artists. Interviews with the organizers noting the variety of art offerings--paying special attention to the surrounding activities--live music by several performers, original spoken word by local poets, a widely-cheered fashion show at the loading dock, topped off with an orgy of culinary arts and choice beverages, gained the attention of many.

This year, the 2006 DESTINATION:1111 event is Friday September 29, Saturday, September 30, and Sunday, October 1. Once again, we pledge to host a diverse selection of local and non-local visual artists, small businesses, new poets, exceptional food and drink, live music and the crowd-pleasing fashion show.

In the beginning... continued

We’ll guarantee the enitre complex of 1111 will continue to be a feast for the senses. The north building’s loading dock will play host to music and performing arts again this year. With all the artists dedicated to creating new work, and the surprises of other ongoing activities, DESTINATION:1111 will continue to evolve.

DESTINATION:1111’s goal is to offer the public an alternative to familiar gallery shops. We feel the studio experience gives both the art supporters and the artists more bang for the buck. As with any venue, the arts are no different. By buying directly from the studio, one may save upwards of 40 percent on the cost of a piece of artwork. We promote many artists in various stages of development who have varying emphases on art as a career, and who are working in a variety of media.

As Grand Rapids continues to grow, so will its’ art scene. The studio artisans who now reside at 1111 Godfrey located on the southwest side of Grand Rapids, MI, invite you not only to enjoy our catalog but also to mark your calendar so that you, too, may experience DESTINATION:1111.

GEARY JONES

Geary Jones has been a tapestry artist for over twenty-five years. His work is about color, and pattern. According to him it is not enough for colors to sing-they need to scream. His work has appeared in nearly 250 exhibits on four continents. Some of the more notable exhibits his work has been shown in are Textile As Language, curated by Sandra Browalee at the Haviland, Strickland & Arronson Galleries in Philadelphia (1987); Pictoral & Narrative Fibers, curated by Tom Lundberg (1988); Threadworks: A Smithsonian Touring Exhibition (1988-1991); State of the Art-Contemporary Fiber, at the Loveland Art Museum in Colorado (1993) and The Herman Miller Collection (1999).

In addition, Jones has lectured, taught and juried throughout the U.S. His work has been published in dozens of periodicals and magazines (American Craft, Fiber Arts, Threads, The Detroit Free Press, The Oregonian, The Baltimore Sun, The New Herald Examiner - to name a few). MICHAEL PAVONA

A Michigan State University graduate of English and religious studies, Michael Pavona is a self-taught artist whose been working in the warehouse studio environment on the Grand Rapids southwest side for nearly 10 years. His urge to document his visual world as he sees it and feels it, is an undeniable passion he pursues.

Pavona is a recognized West Michigan artist, with collectors nationwide. Winning awards, his work has been shown in a number of Michigan museums and galleries--in Grand Rapids, in Muskegon, and in Lansing, --where his roots and art endeavors began.

His work screams magnitudes of color with both organic and geometric shapes, collaborating with a surface that is rich with texture and life, making it anything but flat. Sizes vary from 2’ x 2’ to being 11’ wide.

Working with 3-D pieces allows Pavona the sense of discovery. While his paintings are worked around the edges and are generally 4” off the wall, his 3-D work creates shapes, which may be interpreted as puzzle pieces. Often times, he adds cut canvas which may, or may not, be painted.

JASON QUIGNO

Quigno has been a stone carver since the age of 14. He took a class on the Isabella Indian Reservation in Mt. Pleasant, MI that was taught by Dennis Christy and Daniel Mena. From them he learned the basic techniques of stone-sculpting.

The subject of a lot of Jason’s work stems from his Anishinabe (Chippewa) ethnicity. Abstract spirit beings and animal forms representing the different clans of the Anishinabe people, like bear, eagle, crane, and turtle are a few examples.

Jason is also experimenting in pure abstract form as well as using clay and bronze.

Stone is his main medium: alabaster, limestone, marble and basalt. From these different stones he sculpts simple, graceful and sensuous flowing forms.

Jason has shown his work throughout the United States and has shown and lectured in Japan. Last year he was commissioned to do a sculpture for Central Michigan Community Hospital.

This year, Jason was commissioned to create a monumental basalt sculpture for Central Michigan University. In addition to this, he is also doing two life-size bronze sculptures for the city of Mt. Pleasant.

Becoming Part of ConvergenceWhen I originally broached the subject of doing an artist’s catalog with Erwin Erkfitz (Ideal Collective & Destination core-member) for this year’s Destination:1111, I had no idea how much work this would entail for everyone involved. Erwin and Ideal Collective had never created an artisans catalog and not too many of us had any real concept of how to approach advertising. That said, we knew that we had to get the word out about the exciting events going on, not only this fall but this summer, as well.

In mid-winter (early 2006) I did a lecture for the Woodland Handweavers Guild in Grand Rapids and found out there, that the Handweavers Guild of America (a representative at the said lecture) had dropped an exhibit that had originally been scheduled for another venue. I talked with Michael Pavona, Jason Quigno, and Erwin Erkfitz about bringing that show to our space at 1111 Godfrey; after scheduling a free talk of the Michigan League of Handweavers. The other core members of Destination were enthusiastic (though a little trepidatious at first). Then I began talking to Cathy McCarthy (an MLH board member, and vice president of the Kalamazoo Handweavers Guild). She was excited and when the Ann Arbor Fiberarts Guild warmed to our proposal Cathy started criss-crossing the state to build support for the exhibit.

So that exhibit was finalized for June/July of this year in our north building. I then called Gerhardt Knodel (the director of Cranbrook Academy of Art). And asked, if he might talk to Jane Lackey (the Fibers Head at Cranbrook), about having a Masters student show at the same time (in Gallery -85/42 in our north building).

Becoming Part of Convergencecontinued

Cathy, meanwhile, had been (to put it mildly) “blown away” by our wall space and invited a weaver (Andrea Anderson) to show in Jason Quigno’s gallery space.

Finally, Michael Pavona, Jason Quigno, and I decided to have our Founders’ Exhibit in my 2,000 square foot studio instead of being in a downtown gallery as originally planned. This allows some of Destination’s businesses and artists to benefit from this; such as Grand Exhibits in the South Building (we have three buildings in our complex), the designers of Convergence”s banners, T.W. Felty, a wonderful guitar-maker, and Douglas Glenn, a custom cabinet maker.

That dear people, is how we ended up with four concurrent exhibits during Convergence at 1111 Godfrey Avenue,

or as we call it: Destination:1111.

This quintessential group of designers, fine artists, film-makers, photographers and fashion designers work as a team to create artistic environments as well as creative solutions to advertising needs. As a collective they are able to supply a unique approach to various artistic platforms.

Ideal Collective has been involved in the local art community from the beginning. Some of its artists have showcased their work in the Free Radical Gallery shows over the years. Also, the collective was a sponsor for the Ionia Street Artist Market 2005, in addition to being a vendor and helping out with different scheduled events. The Ionia Street Artist Market hosted an event titled “Kids in the Park.” Members from Ideal Collective helped children create a collaborative painting which is going to be used for their third Collaborative Painting / Bracelet Project to debut this summer.

This will be the second year that Ideal Collective has been involved with Destination:1111. In 2005, Ideal brought a loading dock runway show to the 1111 complex entitled Destination Fashion, which was a huge success. Ideal has extensive plans for this year’s runway show. Its location is not yet known to the public, but we are sure that you’ll enjoy yourself.

Ideal will continue to grow with the local community and work together with those that want to see Grand Rapids prosper into an artistic “Cool City.”

-85/42Working on installation and conceptual projects for the past four years has allowed Nikos Monoyios to express what he believes is an extremely important aspect of art… the experience. His intent is to work on projects that subject the viewer to actively examine objects in context with its surrounding physical space. Encountering this full experience is to be engulfed in a space that provokes an active interaction more so than passive observation. Sometimes the concepts can be absorbed and regurgitated in a multitude of ways, and many times, the viewer just finds the environment simply interesting to be in. Either way, active participation is reinforced resulting in an active experience.

Nikos Monoyios is the Senior Planner for The Rapid, the greater Grand Rapids Transit Authority and is the owner/curator for -85/42 Gallery.

WANT

“We are all under the umbrella of images & attitudes that we absorb within society. As we walk through life, events we experience define what we want, in terms of desires, attitudes, thoughts, viewpoints, feelings, etc. Consequently, we are confronted with the filter of time, forcing us to ask how we can achieve and specifically balance these factors through time while calibrate our positions in life.“
