CLASSIC L INES TURNED INTO MODERNITY ICONS

Inspired in a city that has perfected the art of reinventing itself, the Mitte watches transform classic lines into modernity icons. In the best German style, the collection takes us to Berlin, epicentre of alternative art, urban culture and Europe’s arguable core.

This small ode to the city is completed with a guide to seven key locations that escape the stereotypical Berlin.

We go deep into the reality of the city, discovering, along with actress Macarena García, the places the photographer Arale Reartes (Berliner at heart) considers the most iconic for locals, the spots that truly breathe the essence of what makes Berlin one of the most transgressive capitals of the world.

Main character in both the play and film of `Holy Camp!’ (`La Llamada’), Macarena García has taken an active part in the latest Spanish mass phenomenon.

This talented actress has discovered Berlin with the Mitte watches. Entering the soul of the city and living the real life of the capital and not the tourist façade.

In love with the German capital, Arale thinks of herself as one more amongst Berliners, knowing every hidden corner the city has to offer. Her lens offers us a new look to the city, an authentic point of view, far from the stereotypes, portraying the purest and most authentic Berlin.

We start our German adventure in its most emblematic district. In the centre of the capital, Mitte safeguards the most important monuments of Berlin. Alexanderplatx, or ‘Alex’, as it’s known by be locals, is watched over by the iconic telecom tower; Berlin’s Cathedral whose majestic dome calmly oversees the river Spree; the Museums of National History and Contemporary Art and the Brandemburg Gate that has welcomed, not only newcomers to the city, but events that have been decisive for the course of the country and Europe.

Apart from its rich history, Mitte is a great gastronomical and fashion window, filled with hideouts to get lost in and discover the alternative essence of the city. An ongoing party by the river bank, with stands, that may appear improvised, to seize the moment, the atmosphere and the city. Like Café Cinema, a small corner embellished with graffities that captivated Macarena, and where she couldn’t resist to immortalize the moment with her mother, that joined us.

What if containers had a second life?

These elements with an industrial aesthetic are created with the functions of carrying goods across the sea between countries. But in a city like Berlin, the typical use for an object isn’t its ideal use. The German capital suggests another chance for these metallic cubes. Containers, yes, but not for goods but for culture.

Leaving behind the river Spree we are welcomed by endless graffities, introducing us to a world of colour and diversity that the city of Berlin is constantly nourishing from. A clear example of the essence of this hideout are the musical booths that are present throughout the area. Macarena quickly jumped into one and inserted a couple of coins to dance, surrounded by smoke, to a non-existent song.

The artist is the core of this grand small ecosystem of music, art and performance, where the arts aren’t only shared, but its creation is also encouraged. A constant stimulus to our creativity that challenge our minds to contemplate, produce and understand what embellishes our days.

The work of Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys or Keith Haring are found in between beams and the curved structure of the old platforms from a train station build on 1846. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Berlin offers an interesting contrast between the neoclassical style of the building and the art pieces that live inside.

The new trends are joined by the classics to create a different dynamic. With a free entrance, the museum compiles some of the most important artworks of the 20th Century.

Those responsible of this are Motoki Watanabe (Japan) and Shaul Margulies (Israel), a New York couple who brought to Berlin a Japanese - New Yorker fusion restaurant for breakfast, brunch and lunch.

All these accompanied by the most authentic waiters in the city, young techno club fanatics that run up and down a venue decorated with green hues, floral patterns and a thousand objects hidden in every corner, that the actress couldn’t resist to try and discover.

A table spoon filled with Japan, a pinch of New York,

a few grams of `club kids’ and the magic of something

homemade.

MAUERPARK

It’s Sunday morning in Berlin and Mauerpark is a compulsory stop. The biggest park in the city holds on Sunday’s morning a flea market.

An authentic showcase of thereusable. Here you can find from customized clothes, illustrations, furniture or even old books.

Numerous stands with food, drinks and fruit are strategically arranged to give energy to the curious peasants, like Macarena, who got lost in the market, letting herself be trapped by the magic of the vintage clothing and the antiquities, displayed with the park’s vegetation as a backdrop.

Also, art couldn’t miss this date. Local artists fill the place with music, playing on the side of the market and, as a finishing touch, in the centre of the market we find a karaoke, set in an amphitheatre, where the next musical prodigy can sing along the hits of today and yesterday.

In the past, this airport was one of the key points of commercial air traffic. Today, it’s abandoned. However, this doesn’t mean it has ceased to be important in the life of Berliners.

Transformed into a curious multifunction space for leisure, the airport can host different types of activities or, as Macarena said, to walk in while being lost in our own thoughts. A concrete surface, now covered with vegetation, it’s the spotlight of the capital’s weekends. Full of life and contrasts, it’s a merging point that welcomes everyone.
