Facility Consolidation Project – Interior Space Planning & DesignFor an international firm that specializes in printing related services, LMA has provided space plan utilization, office cubicle layout, MEP interface, and various interior design services, to consolidate three separate facilities into one building. These office and production spaces, located at three separate remote sites, were relocated into one 110,000sf existing building.

The design intent was at first function driven, but with the existing spaces being so unusually high, the design shifted toward creating dynamic volumes and features to utilize the open expanses. Large halo like rings were suspended over cube shaped meeting rooms with oversized sculptural pendant lights illuminating the space below. These elements were further emphasized with bright vibrant colors.

Circles became the counterpoint to the rectangular building wings, being featured in the carpet, wall coverings, and light fixtures. Each wing was given its own identity by alternating the color palate and the existing connecting corridors were upgraded with a playful checkerboard patterned VCT flooring, and walls painted with light hues of blue and green.

Green Infrastructure Requirements

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has recently updated their requirements to obtain a State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit. Every project that will disturb one or more acres during construction must now incorporate “Green Infrastructure” devices into the site design. These devices include the use of native plant materials, bioswales, rain gardens, green roofs, stormwater planters, rain barrels, cisterns, porous pavement areas and infiltration basins. Credits will be given for each green infrastructure device utilized, which will be applied to a minimum required total number of points required to obtain the SPDES permit.

Lauer-Manguso’s site design team has been ahead of the curve on thisissue by already routinely incorporating green infrastructure devices into our stormwater management designs. The photos shown here illustrate a bioswale and infiltration basin designed with native trees and meadow grasses for the new Doodle Bugs! Child Care facility in Clarence, NY.

Other recent examples of green infrastructure devices in our project work include a green roof designed for a future elevator and lobby addition in downtown Buffalo, NY (reputed to be the first such installation in the city) and the inclusion of porous pavements for the Center for Visual & Performing Arts at Daemen College in Amherst, NY.
