Summer is the best time of the year to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime experiences: trips, new contacts, new places, and why not, choosing a stimulating

environment to train along with professionals from all over the world.

The Summer Courses at the IED Madrid Summer School bring together all of these conditions: they allow students to enjoy and learn through an enriching experience, at the same time as they can reinvent themselves in the fields of design and communication.

All of this in a context that promotes networking between students and teachers, with the best premises, right in the city centre, to experience the IED world first-hand, and to learn about project methodology with the help of the professionals who teach in our courses and MA programmes. Likewise, Madrid offers everything that a student seeks. It is cosmopolitan, welcoming, fun, traditional and avant-garde, open and dynamic, as well as the capital of design and innovation, with an intense cultural life and a youthful, optimistic and curious spirit.

The Summer Courses at the IED Madrid Summer School allow students to delve into this world through activities guided by our teachers that take place alongside conventional teaching: visits and trips to the most interesting and active locations in the Madrid summer.

Why take a Summer Course in Madrid?

The Design Experience Summer Course is a compendium of 4 workshops that can be taken together or separately. Each specializes in a specific area of the world of design: fashion design, graphic design, interior design and product design.

Students will develop their creative abilities with experimental workshops, learn about the methodology used in the design process and master the use of the necessary tools to deal with transverse projects. They will also have the opportunity to study with renowned professionals.

Objectives

FASHION DESIGN The Fashion Workshop will give the student the opportunity to discover a self interesting fashion concept, work with it and get both a physical product and a fashion image. The development of this process will enable the student to find out his/her fashion interests and skills, as long as providing him/her with a certain base to face a Fashion Design Undergraduate.

GRAPHIC DESIGN Learn how to work like professional graphic designers. This approach is called “design for the real world” and its aims are for students to learn how to receive a briefing, prepare a budget, carry out a benchmark, design (conceptualization, first ideas, and binding meetings) and present it to the client.

PRODUCT DESIGN The course increases the ability to design and make a prototype of a piece of wooden furniture. Different aspects are studied: functional requirements, ergonomics, materials and ensembles, production, finishes and communication. Lessons are given based on case studies and examples of furniture designs. Each student proposes an idea for a family of products, then designs and develops several products in the same family and, finally, makes a model or prototype of a piece. The course ends with the presentation in public of the finished piece and all the development and communication process of the family.

INTERIOR DESIGN An introduction to the fascinating world of Interior Design for either those who are thinking of studying an Interior Design Undergraduate course as well as for those who would like to have an insight into this discipline. It will enable the student to empower his creativity towards a spatial design, learning about the tools required and the stages involved within a week’s workshop, dealing with a real interior design project.

FASHION DESIGN

The theme of this Fashion Design Experience Summer Program is UPCYCLING. This trendy and forthcoming subject requires a creative and passionate profile but demands low former technical knowledge and so lets the student approach the whole fashion Design process within a week project. Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. The term and concept appeared at the beginning of the 90s and has become unavoidable as the speed we produce, consume and so throw away too many items and materials is even increasing and seems not be sustainable for too long. The workshop will take place during 5 sessions. The student will receive previous instructions to bring certain ideas to the first session.

The session structure will be:

• Presentation + Research + Ideas + Individual Workshop Planning

• Concept Development + Prototype Definition + Start Prototype Construction

• Prototype Construction + Dossier Design• Fashion Shooting [Still life / Editorial]• Dossier Closure + Project PresentationThe Workshop briefing will also be send in advance.

Programme

GRAPHIC DESIGN

PRODUCT DESIGN

A theoretical and practical methodology is used, alternating master classes with workshop classes. Each student will work individually on his/her idea and will have to know how to manage a project, both from the viewpoint of the idea (visual development, designs, renders) and the carrying out of a real prototype (work with materials in the workshop).

• Project briefing • Case studies, examples of products, firms,

materials, ensembles, manufacturing process• Development of a new concept, research,

models, 3D design and render, technical plans• Development of a family of products• Prototype of a piece from the family• Photographic communication and layout,

presentation to potential manufacturer

INTERIOR DESIGN Lectures

• Tools and stages in Interior Design Projects. Maps, plans, diagrams, models and other stories.

• New concepts in Interior Design. Redefining space.

Workshop A full Interior Design Project which will involve a site exploration, a space design, and the elaboration of visualizations, plans and a model.

Methodological Guidelines The workshop consists of a five day structure that enables to go through the different phases of a design Project.

• The client / the program.• Understanding the site. Maps and diagrams• Atmospheres. Building a moodboard. • Plans. Taming the space.• Working models an 3d drawings. • Interior Architecture vs. Decoration. • Final presentation

IED Madrid is constantly in contact with the business world as part of its curriculum, with a relationship that runs parallel to the training course.

Teaching and business are intertwined in each of the courses, enriching the educational experience of the students with case studies, competitions, involvement in projects, etc.

This link is consolidated in most programmes with the completion of a final project in which the student makes use of all the knowledge acquired during the course.

To promote these synergies, the IED Madrid has a Business Bureau where agreements with public and private entities are activated, to develop educational content as part of our Career Guidance.

The aim is to facilitate access to the employment market and to create a network of professional contacts from the start of the academic year.
