From Principal Dr. Christine Barela... Hello Thunder Family, Thank you for another amazing year at Desert Vista High School! It has been such an honor, privilege and blessing to serve as your principal this school year, and I thank all of you for your continued support. In promoting the social and emotion- al well-being of all students, through- out the year I challenged our students to show love for oneself and others, to bring joy of life and learning with them every day to school, to bring patience, peace, kindness and good- ness for self and others, to be faithful to what their parents are teaching them at home and to have self- control when making decisions and choices. Our students worked hard to accomplish this challenge and with the senior leadership from the class of 2017, they did an exceptional job! I look forward to our students em- bracing this challenge next year where they choose to show that all are ac- cepted, nurtured and appreciated for who they are. Because, we are the Thunder Family! It is bittersweet to share that our As- sistant Principal of Activities, Mrs. Tomika Banks, will be joining the Mountain Pointe administrative team for next school year. We are excited for her promotion, but sad to see her leave us. Mrs. Banks dedicated 8 years to teaching science and 8 years serving as an administrator. She is loved and adored by all, and will be greatly missed! I am excited to share that Mr. T.J. Snyder, Assistant Princi- pal of Athletics will be moving over to our activities office bringing a wealth of experience to continue with the excellence that Mrs. Banks has provided. We will introduce our new Assistant Principal of Athletics when the school year begins in the fall. We are thrilled to have earned the prestigious A+ School of Excellence Award TM this past April and will have a community celebration at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. This award is a tribute to the overall Desert Vista community in- cluding teachers, students, staff, par- ents, community members and ad- ministrators. From Principal Dr. Christine Barela...

Hello Thunder Family, Thank you for another amazing year at Desert Vista High School! It has been such an honor, privilege and blessing to serve as your principal this school year, and I thank all of you for your continued support.

In promoting the social and emotion-al well-being of all students, through-out the year I challenged our students to show love for oneself and others, to bring joy of life and learning with them every day to school, to bring patience, peace, kindness and good-ness for self and others, to be faithful to what their parents are teaching them at home and to have self-control when making decisions and choices. Our students worked hard to accomplish this challenge and with the senior leadership from the class of 2017, they did an exceptional job! I look forward to our students em-bracing this challenge next year where they choose to show that all are ac-cepted, nurtured and appreciated for who they are. Because, we are the Thunder Family!

It is bittersweet to share that our As-sistant Principal of Activities, Mrs. T.J. Snyder, Assistant Princi-pal of Athletics will be moving over to our activities office bringing a wealth of experience to continue with the excellence that Mrs. Banks has provided. We will introduce our new Assistant Principal of Athletics when the school year begins in the fall.

We are thrilled to have earned the prestigious A+ School of Excellence Award TM this past April and will have a community celebration at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. This award is a tribute to the overall Desert Vista community in-cluding teachers, students, staff, par-ents, community members and ad-ministrators.

This award affirms that Desert Vista embodies the following: models quality and equity; demonstrates a strong commitment to academic excellence; meets rigorous teaching and learning standards; responds successfully to the changing environment of education; cultivates learning-centered, safe school environments; supports the social, emotion-al, physical, and intellectual needs of all their stu-dents; focuses on the individual needs of every child; recognized for their superior ability to go above and beyond the norm in providing services to children, families, and the local community; demonstrates high or improving levels of student achievement; models innovation in classroom in-struction and programs; implements goals through extensive collaborative involvement of parents and community; provides evidence of high levels of sat-isfaction and consensus; unifies all stakeholders in assuring quality and equity in all aspects of the school’s programs; engages all stakeholders in stra-tegic thinking and planning toward continuous improvement. I would like to thank the entire De-sert Vista community for supporting each other in all that we do for our students. The community celebration date and time will be provided at a later date.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the fami-

lies of the Class of 2021 and to those who are transferring to Desert Vista. We are committed to providing a successful transition to our school and look forward to seeing our freshman and new fami-lies on Friday, August 4th, for ‘Thunder Day’. More details are within the pages of this newsletter.

Beginning on Thursday, May 25th and running through June 30th, the Desert Vista campus will be busy with a variety of terrific summer activities from academics, to extra-curricular, to preparing for high school for elementary up to high school level students. We believe in fostering the love for learning in all of our students and look forward to such an experience this summer. In continuing with ‘Excellence Through Performance’, I ask that you encourage your child to participate in activities that keep both the brain and body active and in-volved over the summer. Physical health, including good diet and exercise, plays an important role in our ability to learn and manage the stress that comes along with being a teenager, and in our over-all mental wellbeing. Wherever the summer finds you, keeping the brain and body engaged and in-volved will enhance learning when school begins in August. I look forward to continuing to serve the Desert Vista community with passion and commit-ment. Have a wonderful and safe summer!

Go Thunder!

Schedule Distribution

All students will receive a hard copy of their schedule during book distribution. This will be the only hard copy that your student will receive. Please have your student look up his or her schedule online starting Thursday, August 3rd to check for any changes on their schedule. If there have been any chang-es, the student should print the updated schedule and follow that schedule on Monday, August 7, 2017.

StudentVue /ParentVue For our freshmen, new students and parents all will be given their access code at the time of book distri-bution. Look again Sunday night for most updated changes prior to school Monday, August 7.

Schedule Changes At the time of registration last spring, courses were made and teachers were hired based on student course re- quests. Students and parents were informed that course changes would not be permitted. Therefore, the only schedule change requests that will be granted before school starts are: 1. If a course change is required to meet graduation/university entrance requirements in the senior year. 2. The course has already been completed (i.e. summer school or online courses). 3. The schedule does not reflect the course request, including the alternate selections. Please be aware that

some students were placed in their alternate selections either due to space available or schedule conflicts. If alternate were not provided by the student, alternates were chose for them.

Please be advised: We cannot change teachers or lunch periods. Seniors with both 6th and 7th period early release may, because of their selected classes, be required to stay

through 5th period. Students do not get to select the order of their classes—even if they have after school clubs or sports. All classes have seat maximums and minimums. Students cannot ask a teacher to “squeeze in just one

more” student. Courses taken in TUHSD Summer Academy will have already been removed from the students’ schedule

and replaced. First Day Procedures: Sunday evening print most updated schedule from StudentVue Follow the schedule as posted in StudentVue on Monday August 7th. Go to counseling ONLY for the following priorities:

Missing class periods—holes in the schedules No lunch periods provided (4th and 5th hour) Add TA to schedule—get blue card for teacher and parent approval Classes have already been completed in summer school Seniors— schedule does not meet graduation requirements

All other schedule change requests: • Email schedule change requests to the student’s counselor no earlier than Monday, August 7th at 4:00 pm • Counselors will work on schedule requests in order of request, submitted after 4:00 pm • Schedules will be changed based upon seat availability in all classes. All seat maximums and minimums will be honored. We are not able to honor the following requests: • Teacher changes • Lunch changes • Movement of classes to other class periods to accommodate work schedules, activities or sports. Please be advised that DV has experienced record enrollment numbers for the 2017-2018 school year. Class sizes have been maintained at levels consistent with previous years. However, most classes are currently at ca-pacity, not allowing for much class movement. We strive to serve our students providing a comprehensive and individualized educational experience. Many months of planning and preparation have allowed us to give your students the best schedule possible.

In our attempt to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum and student learning to maximum, instruction time will not be interrupted except in emergency situations. The front office staff will not be able to hold, take or deliver student items. However, we do understand that a student may forget some items, therefore a parent/guardian may wait in the front office until passing period whereby the front office staff will page the student. The parent will then be able to hand the items to his or her child.

The Post Office will not forward school or district mail, so if you move, you need to provide the Attendance Department with your current SRP statement reflecting your new address. Thank you!

Phones will be available for par-ent pickup afterschool. If stu-dents do not follow school poli-cies, they will be considered to be insubordinate and appropriate discipline will result. Students are encouraged not to bring iPods, mp3 players, laser point-ers, headsets, cameras or video recorders, any game playing de-vice, or any personal electronic or digital music devices on campus. Lost or stolen cell phones or de-vices are the responsibility of the student. Bringing the item to school is at the students’ own risk for loss/theft.

In order to meet our goals, we have modified our school cell phone usage policy. We must minimize distractions if we are to maintain academic excellence. Cell phones will be prohibited during instruction time (unless directed by instructor) and “No Tech Zones”. No Tech Zones in-clude all restrooms, PE locker rooms, front office, and library (during instruction time). Phones may be used before school, passing periods, during lunch, and after school only. Stu-dents caught using their phones during those unauthorized peri-ods and zones will result in the phone being confiscated by staff or security personnel.

Desert Vista is not responsible for stolen or missing equipment and it is strongly encouraged that they not be brought to cam-pus.

Cell Phone Policy

Library/Media Center Hours

The Library will be open at 7:15 AM each day and close on regular school days at 4 pm. The facility will close shortly after the final bell on early release days. Usage during school hours will require a teacher-signed pass. No food or drink (with the exception of water) is allowed in the Library or the com-puter labs. The Library will be open during lunch time for students who need to work on school-related projects and assignments. Any other activi-ties such as playing games or socializing must take place in other designat-ed areas on campus that remain open during lunch time. We will continue to adhere to the fire code capacity, and as such, students will be advised that if they are not doing school-related work and/or we are at or nearly over capacity, they will be asked to leave the Library to make room for students who are waiting to enter to do school work. We thank everyone for their continued support and understanding.

Please contact Mr. TJ Snyder if there are any questions about these poli-cies.

2017-18 Schedule Change Process—July 25-Augsut11, 2017

At the time of registration, last spring, courses were made and teachers were hired based on student course requests. Students and parents were informed that course changes may not be possible. The following situations require a schedule change:

1. To meet graduation/university entrance requirements in the senior year.

2. The course has already been completed (i.e. summer school).

3. The schedule does not reflect the course request, including alternate selections. Please be aware that some students were placed in their alternate selections either due to space availability or scheduling conflicts. If alternates were not provided by the student the counselor was forced to choose for them.

4. TA request - teacher approval required.

5. 0/8th hour additions, space permitting.

All other schedule change requests will be considered based on space availability in the course. The deadline to request a schedule change is August 11, 2017 @ 3:30 pm.

If you make a change, make sure your books are returned to the bookstore and fees are accounted for accurately.

Keeping up with the Business Department…...

Varsity Mock Trial Team Competition.

This year the 2017 Mock Trial team was the largest ever. The 11 team members were committed to complete the year. Mock Trial is extremely demanding academically and requires dedication to a long range goal. The team completed the best season ever for DV. At the Xavier Invitational they were undefeated in their two rounds. At the regional they put in 8 hours of tough trial prep and trial time. The 174 plus hours they put into trial prep is all in the eve-nings and on Saturdays. Graduating Senior and Team Captain Zak Koudssi was this year’s Sandra Day O’Connor Award winner. Alia Alvarez was an exceptional performer and next year’s captains Paige Bowen and Riley Hall are outstanding student attorneys. 2017 team members included Alia Alvarez, Paige Bowen, Jared Brown, Bayleigh Haferbier, Riley Hall, Erica Hoh, Zak Koudssi, Sean Longley, Shelby Miller, Carlos Tosca, and Nathaniel Steele.

Riley Hall - If you have ever had the interest of being a lawyer when you grow up mock trial is the step in the right direction. Even if you don't want to become a law-yer but want to work on your public speaking skills, prob-lem solving, or writing skills mock trial is a great club for you. We work all year learning every detail of a case and presenting it as real lawyers do. You will work with a current de-fense attorney who will critique your work one on one until it is nearly perfect. By the end of the year we compete against other schools in real court rooms in front of real judges and lawyers that will also critique your performance. Mock trial can be a challenge but I hope to see you next year during our Desert Vista Mock Trial season 2017-2018.

Paige Bowen - Stu-dents interested in law or just gaining public speaking skills should defi-nitely join Mock Trial. It's a fun and challenging way to understand the law system and you get a taste of what it's like to be a lawyer in case that's the profession you choose. You get to write and edit different com-ponents of a trial based on a fairly real-istic case. It's interesting to see how oth-er schools transform the case to either prosecute or defend the witness. Business Prep Students – Best in District and State Excel in Career and Technical Education (CTE) Certifications

Desert Vista business students who complete two years of business curriculum are tested by the state under the CTE guidelines. Busi-ness Management and Administrative Services (BMAS) are the spe-cific state standards tested. They include a wide range of business topics from marketing, finance, accounting, entrepreneurship, use of technology, communications, problem solving, and business manage-ment.

Almost 200 business students from Desert Vista tested. This is the largest group from any Arizona school. Their overall average score was higher than the state average and the highest in the district. These students were recognized for their achievements along with other CTE programs at a district cere-mony on May 9th right here at Desert Vista. The certificates students receive will outline their achieve-ments as compared to state business standards.

Senior Ryan Kibby had the Highest Business CTE score at Desert Vista score and probably the district and state. Final numbers are not out yet. His score of 96 is simply outstanding.

Reflection by Ryan Kibby. During my four years at Desert Vista I took a wide variety of business courses ranging from accounting, to business law, and finan-cial planning. I initially started by taking financial planning and by the end of the semester I was hooked; the class offered me something I had never before experienced in school: real world applicability. The common complaint among high school students is that their education did not prepare them to venture out into the real world. The business courses at Desert Vista offered exactly that. In these classes we were thought how to pay taxes and create a budget by some of the most qualified business teachers in the state. Not only did these classes give me real world education but through dual enrollment they also allowed me to earn college credit. I would strongly recommend theses classes for anyone who wants an introduction to accounting or to just get ahead in college.

Market Day

Market Day is an exercise in the free enterprise sys-tem. Students taking entre-preneurship work the entire semester in their prepara-tion for market day. Early in the semester the basic of marketing is covered in class and students begin working in their business groups. They conduct mar-ket research and decide on a product they want to sell. The first quarter ends with their business proposal and hopefully approval of their business name and product. The second quarter the business team will write their business plan with a focus on target markets, business goals/objectives, their strengths/weaknesses/opportunities/threats (SWOT), organization and finally their finance sheet. On the 27th of April Market Day was held. There was almost $4252 in gross sales from the student businesses profits for the business were over $1310. An average business had approximately 25% on Return On Invest-ment. This is a real busi-ness venture so there were student business that also had losses rather than end-ing with a profit. Below are comments from student entrepreneurs:

Brooklyn Dial—Taking the Entrepreneurship class this year was a very positive and enlighten-ing experi-ence for me and I am certain-ly glad that I was able to learn as much as I did. I learned about how busi-nesses work and function and all of the important components that go into creating a successful busi-ness. Through my group’s preparation for Market Day, we as students got a first-hand view of what it is like to be a real life entre-preneur. I learned a lot about managing my time, utilizing my resources, and working together with oth-ers through this experience. On Market Day, it was ex-hilarating to see people ac-tually purchase your prod-uct. It was satisfying selling the product that we created because so much time and effort went into the process for our final sell day on Market Day. This class has taught me so much about the business side of life and I believe that everyone should take this class before taking on the real world.

Cameron Gardner -Market Day was a big learning expe-

rience for me. I hope to one day become and entre-preneur and Mar-ket Day helped me see how much work and little details need to go into becoming a successful business. My group and I created a Polar-oid photo booth service. We got to take pictures of the students who then re-ceived the photos instantly through the polaroid in-stant printing. But, there was way more to it than just taking pictures and getting money. We had to go through extensive survey-ing, business proposals, and business plans. These con-sisted of getting to know our target market, and what they would like to see at market day; proposing and getting approval of the final product by our teacher; and getting into the nitty-gritty of the finances, our mission statement, strengths and weaknesses of our compa-ny, as well as our market environment and who we will sell to. Market Day was a fun way to learn first-hand what all goes into starting up a business. I know that I will take what I have

learned into my future ca-reer as an entrepreneur.

Sydney Harrison -Entrepreneurship was an overall good experience for me. I fared well by tak-ing good notes and simply paying attention and doing what was expected of me. I enjoyed the structure of the class (PowerPoint notes and group projects) and the Market Day project especially. This project gave me the chance to work closely with some class-mates and make friends while learning about the entrepreneurial process. I think my group in particu-lar had a good taste of what starting your own business is really like. We ordered our products over a month in advance, and still haven’t received them! Our group dealt with the obstacle well, thanks to the contingency funds (my advice is to put as much into that as possi-ble!) and still had fun inter-acting with the students and staff on Market Day. I did enjoy this class, the friends I made in it, and the real-life experience I received by starting up my own mini-business.

DV Business Students Compete in

Wharton’s International Finance Competition

Nine students from Desert Vista competed in an investment competition sponsored by Penn’s Wharton Business school. This investment competition is a free, global, online investment simula-tion for current high school students (9th to 12th grade) and teachers. Students learn about team-work, communication, risk, diversification, company analysis, industry analysis and investing. Teams must have four to nine students, and classes can have several competing teams; student-led investment clubs and home-schooled teams are also welcome to participate. Each competing team is responsible for managing a portfolio of $100,000 in virtual cash using Wharton’s OTIS online trading system, an Online Trading and Investment Simulator. Winners are selected on the strength and articulation of their strategies, not on the growth of their portfolios, which is a key differentiator between this investment challenge and others. Portfolios are complex and must be written specifically for a specific investor. Wharton provides the profile of the investor. This year’s Captain Aditya Bollam managed the team and investment strategy. The team submitted an outstanding project and even though they didn’t win they walked away with valuable investment experience. Actual winners were: 1st Place: Silver Stone Partners of The International School Bangalore, India 2nd Place: One Up on Herd Street from Amity International School, Noida, India 3rd Place: United World Capital from United World College RCN, Norway Junior Hayden Krug had this to say about the project. Working on the Wharton stock investment program was a huge help in learning about stocks and real world investing. Our team tracked real life stock developments and made real time transactions based on our views of the market. Having that kind of freedom to invest and see our “results” re-ally taught us a lot about investing strategy and how the market works. I came into this competition knowing very little about stocks or investing, but I figured it was worth a shot. As time went on and our team called in experts to help us learn more about professional stock trading for real cli-ents, my interest and passion for investing grew as well. In short, this pro-gram opened the doorway for me into a new world of investing, and gave me hands on experience with trading and experienced professionals. I look forward to continuing my interests in investing and learning more from perhaps a school of business in the future. The options with business are limitless and I hope to find a life passion based on what I’ve learned from the Wharton program.
