DescriptionofTheLuisVelázquezScholarshipFund
Purpose: TheLuisVelázquezScholarshipFundawardsscholarshipsto universityorcollegeboundseniorsofLatinodescentbasedon demonstratedacademicachievementandfinancialneed.Guidelines: Forstudentsattendinga4-yearinstitution,a$2,500scholarshipwill beawardedanddisbursedover4yearsinunevenpaymentsof$250, $500,$750,and$1,000. Forstudentsattendinga2-yearinstitution,a$750scholarshipwillbe awardedanddisbursedover2yearsinunevenpaymentsof$250and $500. Recipientsmustcontinuetoattendclassesandmaintainacumulative GPAnolowerthan3.0.Thescholarshipisnotrenewable.Students whosuspendtheirstudiesoraresuspendedfromtheacademic institutionforanyreasonwillhavetheirscholarshiprevoked.Criteria: StudentseligibleforthescholarshipmustbegraduatingHighSchool seniorswhoresideinanyofthefollowingTennesseeCounties: Anderson,Grainger,Jefferson,Knox,Loudon,Sevierandmeetthe followingcriteria: 1.Latinodescent(apersonwhotracesorigintoacountryformerly colonizedbySpainorPortugal) 2.NeedoffinancialsupportasdefinedbyFAFSA 3.GPAof3.00orbetterona4.00scaleApplication: Submissionofthescholarshipapplicationpackagebeforethe March1,2018deadline.Thedeadlineisthepostmarkeddate,after which,applicationswillnolongerbeaccepted.Notification:AllapplicantswillbenotifiedoftheirstatusbyMonday,April16, 2018.

aCivilEngineerwiththeDepartmentofEnergy.AsaLatino,hewasinterestedin
communitybuildingandimmediatelybegantoplanactivitiesthatwouldbring
togethertheLatinocommunity.DOEgavehimasecondresponsibilityasaminority
recruiterandsponsoredtripstoPuertoRicoandtouniversitieseducatingLatinosand
nowmanyoftheLatinosemployedbyDOEaretherethoughhisrecruitment.After25
yearsofservice,heretiredfromDOEbutcouldnotsitstill.Aprojectsponsoredby
KnoxvilleLegalAidgavehimtheopportunitytocreateadirectoryofLatinoowned
businessthroughEastTennessee.Ameetingofthesebusinessownersattheendofthe
projectgavebirthtotheHispanicChamberofCommerceofEastTennessee.Hethen
becameitsfirstDirectorandCEO,apositionheheldfor10yearsandonlyleftwhenhe
wasstrickenbyterminalcancer.LuisgraduatedfromLeadershipKnoxvillein2006.
Hisactiveroleinthecommunitygavehimtheopportunitytoserveinmanyboards
andcommittees.Hisbeliefthateducationwasthekeyfortheimprovementofour
community,wasrecognizedbytheUniversityofTennessee,whomadehima
Chancellor’sAssociate.ThescholarshipinhisnamesponsoredbyaHOLAisan
appropriaterecognitionandhisfamilyisverygratefulandproud.
