NRC ENVIRONMENTAL AIR SAMPLING M. .

.

Daily air samples were collected at several fixed locations on orsurrounding the TMI site. The samples were collected with EberlineRAS-1 air samplers using glast fiber carticulate filters and charcoalcartridges for iodines. Daily grab air samples were collected down- -

wind of the plant by the NRC ground survey teams to aid in assessingmaximum iodine concentrations in the plume. These samples werecollected using a IADECO H809V air sampler powered by a portable ,

generator. Charcoal cartridges were used as the collection medium. ;.

Several types of charcoal cartridges were employed in the first daysfollowing the TMI incident. The most common cartridge types employedwere the CP-100 and CP-200 types. The collection affici.encies of thesemedia as a function of flow rate is shown in FIGURE 1. TABLE 1 si.ows

The charcoal cartridges and particulate filters were analyzed togt.therusing the NRC Mobile Laboratory Ge (Li) ga=ma spectrome m with anominal count time of 20 minutes.

The NRC Lower Limit of Detection (LLD) is calculated using theEnvironmental Measurements Laboratory (EML) definition from HASL-300:

'Ihe quality of performance was assured by performing background and.

" standard" cartridge counts on each shift. In addition inplant charcoalcartridges were analyzed on a daily basis wit! routine cross -checksof the results with measurements made of the same cartrid as made byFRadiation Management Corporation and Sciencific Applications, Inc. In

addition, one of the cartridges analyzed by all three of the abovelaboratories was sent to the DOE: RESL facility fcr in-laboratory

analysis.
