Notes for Robert Chandler: The earliest known evidence of Robert and Elizabeth Chandler in York Co., VA is a will recorded in 1651/52 for which Elizabeth Chandler was a witness. By this time Robert and Elizabeth had established a family and their tenure in York Co. and Robert's status as a land owner involved in community affairs is confirmed by several surviving records. CFA documents say of Robert "Robert Chandler was born ca. 1626 in Kiccoughtan (also called Eliz. Cittie) and died in New Kent County in 1669. His wife was named Elizabeth and may have been the daughter or sister of William Davis. They were known to have lived in York Co. as early as 1651/52. Robert died in the spring of 1669. They had four sons William, Robert, John and Francis and one daughter Mary. Roberts parents were John Chandler and (?). The CFA writings say of Robert, It appears certain that he was born in Virginia, a son of John, the only Chandler documented as living in this county who could be his father. The CFA records also say that the name of Roberts mother or the time of her death is not known, but John was married by 1636 to Elizabeth_____ - apparently Elizabeth Lupo." This William is a direct descendant of John Chandler who landed in Jamestown in 1610. The presence of William and other Chandlers in Surry Co., NC are best studied through the 1782 to 1800 tax rolls of Surry and Stokes Co. (Stokes

Co. was formed from Surry Co. in 1789 and it is in this area that William and Delisha lived). There is another William Chandler in Surry Co. (the part that remains Surry Co.) at this same time and this is probably one of William and Delisha's sons. In this era, a poll tax was paid on all males over 21 years old and under 50 years old. William Chandler paid 1 poll tax for each year from 1784 (start of the tax) through 1791. This seems to indicate that William was paying one tax for himself. He was not, since he was over 50 years old at the start of the tax. The tax represented a son living in the same household. In 1792, William pays no poll tax and a son Richard appears in the same tax district of Stokes Co. (the only Chandlers in Stokes Co. at this time) and pays one poll tax. William died in 1794 and his will dated December 25, 1794 is witnessed by Richard Wood and Mary Chandler. Mary Chandler is the wife of William and Delisha's son Richard. Notes for Richard Chandler: Richard Chandler is the son of William Chandler and Delisha Cox Dobbins of Suury Co. in an area which will become Stokes. Co., NC when it is formed in 1789. William, who is past the age to pay poll tax before the 1784 initiation of poll tax in this area, pays a poll tax for 1 male during this period (this is Richard) until 1792 when he pays none and Richard appears as paying a poll tax for himself in the same (Capt. Beasleys) tax district. William pays no more poll tax until his death in 1794. In 1794, Richard pays tax (1 poll) and 200 acres of land in another tax district. Chandler of Stokes Co., NC with 3 males 0-10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45 and up, 1 female 0-10,1 1 female 26-45, 2 slaves. The listing shows Richard in the age group 16-25 in the year 1800. This must be an error in the recording since Richard as shown by the poll tax records in which he is shown paying tax for himself in 1792 - this means he would be at least 29 in 1800. Much more likely is that census taker marked the wrong column and should have used the next column which indicated a 26 - 45 age group. Richard Chandler appears on various Patrick Co., VA court and tax documents throughout the period of 1802 to 1811 at which time his records stop. In 1812, a Richard Chandler appears on the Kanawha Co., VA (later WV) tax rolls. Whether this is the same Richard is not known. In 1813 and other listings up to and past 1830, this Richard is listed as Richard C. (Carter) Chandler. Richard's son William, who marries Polly Harris in 1809, appears in the Patrick Co., VA Personal Tax record as a tithable, in 1804 (in VA this status begins at age 16). Patrick County Virginia Deed Index Abstracts 1791 - 1850, in the year 1803 shows a gift from Richard to a Suesa Chandler. It is assumed that Suesa is his daughter. Notes for William Brownsfield Inghram: William B Inghram joined the Union Army along with his cousin who was Captain West. His cousin decided to take William's horse since it was a better animal. William took exception to this and beat the heck out of his cousin which landed William in the brig. William was supposed to be shot for this offense. He broke out of the brig and joined up with others in the woods. He formed Capt Inghram's Independent Scouting Company also known as the Wolverines. They protected the settlers in the area from Rebel raiders. All this is according to William's request for his pension. Toward the end of the War, William and his men joined up with the Union Army. William told them his name was William B Downey. His pension request indicates that Downey was his grandparents' name. We have his Civil War discharge medallion from WV which indicates William B Downey. He was a blacksmith, worked on the railroads which were new to the Kanawha Valley and became a Baptist minister who did the revival circuit in southern WV. When he married Parthenia Escue, he used the Downey name. He confessed his real name to her and she made him marry her again with the Inghram name. She died before he did and in his pension

request he indicates that he had only the one wife and that one wife was enough for any man.
