I appreciate your time and would like to introduce myself. My Name is Derek Schukow; I am a

senior at Lakeland College studying Business Administration with an emphasis in management.

Currently, I am a Certified Surgical Technologist with 18 years of experience in the operating

room setting. My character is based on professionalism, team work, strong communications, and

the ability to adjust to changing needs in a fast paced environment. Every idea and action is

carefully thought out using risk assessment evaluating. I am quick thinking with an innate ability

to find solutions to most problems. My computer skills are advanced with knowledge in multiple

office programs including Excel and Word Documents, Spreadsheets and Power Point

Presentations in addition to being familiar with other health care software programs.

I am a team leader for the Urology Specialty and assistant team lead in robotic surgery. In these

roles I manage the inventory in the specialty and maintain surgeon preferences along with

continually working to maintain cost savings initiatives also known as LEAN. I have a strong

working relationship with surgeons, staff and sales representatives.

I proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 15 years where I served 10 of those years as a

Sergeant primarily in the Medical Corp. I was a supervisor for Central Materials Sterilization

(CMS) where I lead 11 soldiers on a monthly and two week summer basis. My responsibilities

included soldier evaluations, maintaining U.S. army policies in conjunction with Government

regulations involving sterilization. I created work schedules for soldiers on a daily basis when on

annual training. As I moved on to the 911th Forward surgical team I took on two roles. One role

was as Company Training NCO responsible for all the training for medics, nurses, surgical techs,

and surgeons. I maintained records, created templates for training based on the Commanders

Mission Statement. I was instrumental in planning, developing, implementing and conducting

yearly training to meet the needs of the unit along with creating forecast of supplies required for

training. This was assisted by continually creating and updating risk assessments for the unit and

training conditions. The second position was as the surgical section supervisor. In this position I

was responsible for nurses, surgical techs, nurse anesthetists and surgeons. My duties were vast

but included; establishing a CMS in Afghanistan at Kandahar Regional Airfield and moving a

forward surgical unit from level IV care to long term level II/III care. This included establishing

contacts with military supply chains to create a more practical surgical suite for performing

general, orthopedic, plastics and vascular care. Highlighted areas include ordering supplies,

instrumentation, to accommodate more definitive surgeries as well as a field sterilizer for

processing instrumentation. Creating purchase proposals sent to Central Command for $100,000

mini C-arm and $50,000 Stryker surgical power system. Also developing and implementing a 20

ton supply donation to the local Merewise Hospital in Kandahar Afghanistan, utilizing the

government bulk foreign donation program. This included but was not limited to medical

supplies, dressings, instrumentation, emergency lighting and surgical supplies to treat patients

after their initial lifesaving treatment by the U.S. Army and discharged to Merewise Hospital. I

also maintained three work shifts creating daily schedules to help support our mission along with

augmenting our staff with medics and nurses from other units. I performed semiannual soldier

evaluations and computer based procedure record keeping. In Civil Affairs I developed a strong

foundation in how to appropriately interact and communicate with people.

I am currently attending Lakeland College where I am a senior with two classes left to obtaining

my Bachelor degree in Business Administration. I have studied other fields including political

science, Theology, History along with taking several psychology classes to better understand the

human behavior. My graduation date is tentatively spring 2015 from Lakeland College. Add this

degree to my years of supervising in the military and it creates a great foundation.
