Look for finds in most basic of places

ne of the “evergreen” concepts of beginning genealogical research is also one that bears repeating in an age

when more and more genealogists only initiated their pursuit since the personal computer and Internet became desktop staples.

For decades if not generations, genealogy instructors have urged those just taking up with the craft to “start with yourself” and then “head for the attic.”

The “start with yourself” adage has been part of the playbook because it’s always tempting to start research by plucking a family surname history book off a library shelf (or, to update the analogy, from a digitized collection such as Google Books) and working forward from an immigrant or other distant progenitor that “just has to be the line” for which you’re looking.

Veteran genealogists know the folly of this approach – that for every “gusher” you find by moving forward in time you’ll probably hit a dozen or more “dry holes” and waste a lot of time in the process.

Instead, the methodical approach of beginning in the present and documenting backward through the generations leads to more solid genealogy as well as an efficient use of research time.

It’s equally true that a great step to take early in your genealogical quest is to scour so-called “home sources” such as copies of certificates of vital events, military discharge pages, family Bibles and registers.

Corinne Earnest reports on Page 3 that sometimes these registers are found written in daybooks, for sale at auction houses – but you can be sure that at one point they resided in someone’s attic – waiting for a genealogist to discover.

No one is ever likely to want to go back to a time when indexes were created one 3-by-5 card at a time or when accessing the U.S. Census meant reeling through microfilm after microfilm … but neither should we forget to look in our family attics, nightstands, fireproof safes and other nooks and crannies for information that might be found nowhere else.

Remele family record found in daily handbook

By Corinne Earnest

A family record penned in German script in John Friedrich Starck’s popular German-language daily handbook relates information about several children whose surname was REMELE.

The names of the parents of these children were not given, although the father might have been Michael REMELE, for his name appears on the front flyleaves. The mother’s maiden name was likely HARTMAN.

No location was given in this record, but

the family may have been in Luzerne or Columbia County, Pennsylvania, where the pastor, W. BAHL worked.

The handbook, printed in 1834 by

George W. Mentz in Philadelphia, was recently sold at auction by Horst Auction Center in Ephrata, Pennsylvania.

The genealogy details for the REMELE

children follow:

• Georg REMELE was born about six o’clock in the morning on June 30, 1829. He was baptized by Peter KESSLER, Lutheran, on September 13, probably in 1829. The sponsors at Georg’s baptism were David REMELE and Annamaria HARTMAN, single.

• Annamaria REMELE was born about eight o’clock on the evening of January 7, 1831. She was baptized March 27 [1831] by Pastor BAHL, Lutheran. The only sponsor at Annamaria’s baptism was her grandmother, Rebeca HARTMAN.

• Sara REMELE was born about two o’clock

in the morning on February 24, 1833. She was baptized by Pastor BAHL on April 20

[1833]. The grandparents, Michael and Susana REMELE sponsored Sara’s baptism.

• Maria Magdalena REMELE was born about eleven o’clock at night on December 29, 1835. She was baptized March 20, 1836 by Pastor BAHL. The sponsors at Maria Magdalena’s baptism were Johannes and Mariamagdalena [sic] REMELE.

• Matilta REMELE was born about five o’clock in the evening on January 26, 1838. She was baptized April 15 [1838] by Pastor BAHL. The parents served as sponsors at this baptism.

• Rebecca REMELE was born June 1, 1840 and baptized November 1, 1840 by Pastor BAHL. The mother sponsored Rebecca’s baptism.

• Susana REMELE was born March 21, 1842 and baptized September 4, 1843 by Pastor BAHL. Once again, the mother sponsored this baptism.

• Daniel REMELE was born about one o’clock in the morning on April 24, 1844. He was baptized May 26 [1844] by Johannes STOECKER, Lutheran. The parents sponsored Daniel’s baptism.

• Emanuel REMELE was born about eleven (?) o’clock at night on May 8, 1845. He was baptized July 23 [1845] by Johannes STOECKER. The parents sponsored Emanuel’s baptism.

• Cattarina REMELE was born October 5, 1850. She was baptized May 25, 1851 by Pastor SEIBERT (?), an Evangelical preacher. The parents sponsored Cattarina’s baptism.

FRAKTUR FORUM By Corinne Earnest

Hetrick / Hetterich name abounds

oyce Reed asked about the name HETRICK on fraktur. She did not specify a location, but we found this name in several locations, mostly throughout southeast Pennsylvania. Unless otherwise noted, all locations listed below are in Pennsylvania. Names are spelled as they

appear on the fraktur. The book, Bucks County Fraktur, pictures a Taufschein (birth and baptism certificate) made for Elias HETTERICH. According to this certificate, Elias HETTERICH was the son of Christian and Catharina (SCHÜZ) HETTERICH. Elias was born about ten o’clock in the morning on December 10, 1815 in Lower Milford Township, Bucks County. He was baptized by Pastor RELLER, but no date of baptism was given. The baptismal sponsors were Adam NES and his wife Reul BIBER [Rachel BIEBER]. Added notes on this certificate say that Elias was confirmed in 1832 by Andreas STRASSBERGER, Reformed, and he married Feiette LEISTER on February 14, 1841. The HETTERICHs were married by Johann Andreas STRASSBERGER. A related Taufschein is in a private collection. It was made for Catharina HETRICH, daughter of Elias and Fayete (LEISTER) HETRICH. Catharina was born July 30, 1841 in Milford Township, Bucks County. She was baptized October 17, 1841 by A. STRASBERGER. The sponsors at Catharina’s baptism were Roland HERTZEL and Lehanna LEISTER. The current location is unknown of a Taufschein made for Noah HETRICK, son of Jacob and Sarah HETRICK. Noah was born March 23, 1838 in Hopewell Township, Perry County, Ohio. He was baptized May 20, 1838 by Thomas WINTER. The mother’s maiden name may read FOCHT. The names of the baptismal sponsors were not recorded on this certificate. On October 15, 2005, Pook and Pook Auctions in Downingtown sold a Taufschein made for Heinrich SCHNEIDER, son of Johann Andreas and Anna Maria (HÜTTERICH) SCHNEIDER. Heinrich was born in “Accident,” Allegheny County, Maryland, on May 8, 1853. He was baptized by Pastor SCHNEIDER on May 15, 1853. The sponsors at Heinrich’s baptism were Johann Andreas SCHNEIDER and Anna Margaretha SCHNEIDER. A Taufschein in a private collection was made for Johannes HETTERICH, son of Henrich (?) and Elisabetha HETTERICH. Johannes was born about midnight on March 8, 1787. He was born in Berks County and baptized March 24, 1787. The sponsors at his baptism were Johannes and Catharina FREYBERGER. In the second volume of The Printed Birth and Baptismal Certificates of the German Americans, Klaus Stopp pictures a Taufschein made for Cadarina HECK, daughter of Johannes and Anna Maria (FREIBERGER) HECK. Cadarina was born March 22, 1805 in Heidelberg Township, Berks County. She was baptized by William HENDEL, but no date of baptism was recorded. The sponsors at Cadarina’s baptism were Peter and Cadarina HETRICH.

The second volume of German-American Family Records in the Fraktur Tradition records a lengthy Bible record made for the Daniel and Elisabetha (HETTRICH) BEISEL family. Daniel and Elisabetha were married on June 11, 1807 by Pastor WALTER. Fifteen children were born to this family. The first eight were daughters, Maria (1808-09), Selme (1809-24), Lydia (born 1811), Anna (1813-24), Catharina (1814-24), Elisabeth (born 1816), Magdalena (born 1817), and Raele [Rachel] (born 1819). They were followed by Abraham (1821-24), Heriette (born 1823), Lusinna [Lusianna] (born 1824), Hanna (born 1827), Daniel (born 1829), Banevil (born 1831), and William (born 1833). Elisabetha (HETTRICH) BEISEL died January 4, 1846 “after a long illness.” No location is given in this Bible record, but the family probably came from Northumberland County. The third volume of The Printed Birth and Baptismal Certificates of the German Americans lists data from a Taufschein related to the above Bible record. It was made for Lusianna BEISSEL, daughter of “Taniel” and Elisabeth (HETTRICH) BEISSEL. Lusianna was born December 13, 1824 in Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County. She was baptized February 6, 1824 [1825]. A Taufschein in a private collection was made for Sara Anna GIKER, daughter of John and Katharina (HETRICH) GIKER. Sara Anna was born June 1, 1845, in Penn Township, Berks County. She was baptized August 10, 1845, by Pastor MIESE. The sponsors at Sara Anna’s baptism were John HETRICH and his wife. The third volume of German-American Family Records in the Fraktur Tradition records the same data, with spelling variations, from a Bible record. The Bible record gives greater detail about the names of the sponsors. This record was made for the GUILDIN/GIKER family of Berks County. It mentions Sarah Anna, daughter of John and Catharina (HETERICH) GICKER. Sarah Anna was born June 1, 1845 in Penn Township, Berks County. She was baptized August 10, 1845 and confirmed in 1860 by I. MIESE. The sponsors at Sarah Anna’s baptism were John and Catharina (WERNER) HETTERICH. The same volume lists data from a Taufschein made for William Reili, son of William and Rebecca (SÄMAN) HETRICH. William Reili was born in Penn Township, Berks County, on April 9, 1853. He was baptized June 19, 1853 by Pastor MIESE. The sponsors at William Reili’s baptism were William and Rebecca SÄMAN. In the first volume of The Printed Birth and Baptismal Certificates of the German Americans, Klaus Stopp pictures a certificate made for Elisabetha FÜRSTER, daughter of Leonhard and Barbara (HETTERICH) FÜRSTER. Elisabetha was born August 6, 1806, at about ten in the “afternoon.” Elisabetha was baptized September 8, presumably in 1806. The sponsors at her baptism were Georg and Magdalena SCHMIDT. No location was given, nor was the name of the pastor recorded. That same volume pictures a Taufschein made for Hattie Louisa, daughter of Lewis and Senora HETTERICH. Hattie Louisa was born August 1, 1886, and baptized by S.E. OCHSENFORD on October 3, 1886 in Rockefeller Township, Northumberland County. As is customary, I am forwarding additional information concerning HETRICKs on fraktur to Joyce Reed. If you have names you wish me to research on fraktur, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Corinne Earnest, PO Box 1132, Clayton DE 19938. I research names on fraktur at no charge for members of MAGS.

Micklÿ / Butz family Bible

A Bible in a private collection provides data about the MICKLŸ/BUTZ family of Northampton and Lehigh Counties in Pennsylvania. In front of the Bible is a lengthy note that was penned on November 30, 1826. The genealogically significant information from the notation says that Abraham and Esther BUTZ, the parents of Ana (BUTZ) MIKLEŸ [sic] of South Whitehall Township [Lehigh County], gave the Bible to their daughter on November 30, 1826 shortly after the birth of her third child. The BUTZ’s paid eleven dollars and twelve cents for the Bible. The German-language Bible was printed in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1819. The printer was Johann BÄR. This Bible is one of BÄR’s subscription Bibles, which names numerous subscribers from Pennsylvania especially, but also Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and North Carolina. Abraham BUTZ was one of the subscribers listed under Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The two-page family register records the following information:

Peter MICKLŸ, son of Christian MICKLŸ and his wife, Elisabeth (DESCHLER) MICKLŸ was born July 17, 1797 in South Whitehall Township, Northampton [today’s Lehigh] County. Peter was baptized by Pastor BLUMER on August 13, 1797. The sponsors at his baptism were Friederich and Salome BIERŸ. Added in pencil, “Died February 20, 1877.”

Peter MICKLŸ married Anna BUTZ on August 26, 1817. Anna BUTZ was the daughter of Abraham and Esther (EGNER) BUTZ. Anna BUTZ was born March 26, 1800 in Macungie Township, Northampton [today’s Lehigh] County. She was baptized May 8, 1800 by Pastor HELFRICH. The sponsors at Anna’s baptism were Johannes and Catharina BUTZ. Added in pencil, “Died November 29, 1880.”

Peter and Anna (BUTZ) MICKLŸ had seven children, all born in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

Elisa Anna was born August 16, 1818. She was baptized September 7 [1818] by Pastor GOBRECHT. The sponsors at Elisa Anna’s baptism were Abraham and Esther BUTZ. Elisa Anna died two days after she was baptized.

The Achtert genealogy begins with the first generation in 1841 in Breslau, Silesia and ends with Zachary Pattasseril George. These two families connected with the marriage of Anna D. Ikels (the spelling changed in the sixth generation) and Alfred Carl Robert Achtert on 8 April 1900 in New York, NY. The format of both genealogies is the same. The photographs are the same: a few of the family, a photograph of the SS Persia which brought Alfred Carl Robert Achtert to New York in 1896. The Achtert genealogy contains an additional photograph of the Achtert family, 1890.

The information is well documented with more 100 sources cited. The every name index contains birth and death dates, as well as the relationship to a selected family member. These genealogies could be helpful to anyone researching the Ickels (Ikels) and Achtert lines as well as the numerous collateral lines cited. Even though much of the information is the same in the two genealogies, the researcher should use both in order to get the best results.

The Histories of the Pennsylvania and Central Pennsylvania Conferences

of the Evangelical United Brethren Church

By Charles R. Miller and William L. Raker

1968. Available from United Methodist Historical Society, 2200 St. Paul Street, Baltimore, MD 21218. 410-889-4458. Hard cover. 654 pages. Illustrated in black and white. Indexed. For price contact United Methodist Historical Society. The first two chapters, Genesis and Exodus, provide a history of the beginning of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in the current Pennsylvania Conference. The authors have pointed out that this book is not a history of the denomination even though “the very early history of the conference and the denomination run parallel.” There are Conference Minutes for every year beginning with 1800 through 1832. After this date the Conference Minutes are spotty; in some cases there is a two year gap, in other instances the gap can be anywhere from four to nine years.

The minutes of 1859, only five lines, are especially interesting. At this Conference Benjamin R. Hanby, the son of Bishop William Hanby, became a minister. Benjamin R. Hanby composed the song “Darling Nellie Gray.” “…a song that had far-reaching influence in the abolition of slavery.” The effect of the Civil War on the denomination is seen in the minutes of 1862 and 1863. Both Francis Scott Key and John Brown were affiliated with the United Brethren Church — the former as church organizer and evangelist in Carroll County, MD,

and the latter in Harper’s Ferry, WV, where he attended services the day before his famous raid. Chapter IV, the largest chapter in the book, names all of the churches in the Pennsylvania Conference with a brief history of each church, along with a picture of most of the churches. The ministers of the Pennsylvania Conference are named with dates of ordination, birth, death, and place of burial. A chapter covers the most prominent ministers from 1789 to 1925. The authors have also included lay leaders and missionaries. The last section is the history of the Central Pennsylvania Conference, an area that runs from Lycoming County, PA, to Washington, DC. Instead of including Conference minutes the authors relate in narrative form the important events from 1839 to 1964. The index is adequate, but not all names are included; however, there are numerous lists of ministers and laymen throughout the book. This book can be used for research of selected topics or read through as an interesting history. It is predominately a church history, but items of general interest are also included.

Genealogical Resources of the Civil War Era

By William Dollarhide

2009. Available from Family Roots Publishing Company, P.O. Box 830, Bountiful, Utah 84011. Soft cover. 191 pages. Indexed. $32.95 plus $4.95 shipping and handling.

Genealogical Resources of the Civil War Era by William Dollarhide covers records remaining of the soldiers and regiments as well as many of the more difficult to find records that involve the civilian population from 1861 to 1869 and then the post-war veterans.

The book is divided into general descriptions of resources from national sources such as those found in the National Archives, Family History Library and internet resources.

It continues detailing the state resources listing them by state and territories extending from Alabama through Wyoming Territory.

“Part 4 – The Best Civil War Resource Centers for Local & County Research” details records found in the Family History Library; Allen County Public Library; the Library of Congress; Carlisle, Pennsylvania and Hill College repositories; Texas unit histories; and finally the Civil War parks and historic sites.

Each of the subjects is accompanied by a detailed example of the record type. If online information is discussed, print screens are included and complete descriptions of the input data needed to extract online information is detailed.

For instance, the reviewer has been interested specifically in Tennessee Civil War research and in particular its impact on family life during the War. Dollarhide lists online sites available such as the Tennessee State Library and Archives that include adoption records, birth and death certificates, court records, deeds, divorce records, land grants, marriage records, military records, newspapers, probate and tax records. There are numerous Civil War online resources for Tennessee including rosters, the Confederate Relief and Historical Association of Memphis, Tennessee Southern Claims Commission records, Pension applications, lists of Confederate physicians, lists of Confederate Soldiers’ Home Applications, among others.

This type of information is listed for each state including already published books and resources and where they may be purchased. Statewide lists of Veteran Burials are included.

Genealogical Resources of the Civil War Era is literally a goldmine of information for researchers seeking additional information about all aspects of the American Civil War. It really is a reference book that should be kept in all of our personal libraries.

MAGS Past President Invited to Speak in Germany

A two-day genealogy conference, held annually at Schloss Dhaun near Kirn in the Rhineland-Palatinate, will take place on April 17-18 and include MAGS past president, John T. Humphrey, who will participate with his presentation Die Erforschung unserer deutschen Vorfahren: eine US-amerikanische Perspektive (Researching our German Ancestors, An American Perspective).

Other lectures related to the American theme include a lecture by Helmut Schmahl that will explore the myths and realities of emigration to the United States. Conference organizer, Roland Geiger, will present in German a lecture prepared by the American historian Philipp Otterness, covering the first mass migration to America in 1709.

Lectures covering German sources include a presentation by Hans Joachim Kuhn on Sources for Family Historians from the late Middle Ages for Westrich and Hunsruck. Günter Paulus will give a lecture about the Kirner genealogist Oskar Pennigroth. A presentation addressing generational morals and conflict in the Middle Ages will be given by Sylvie Tritz. Attendees will also have an opportunity to explore German paleography. All presentations will be delivered in German.
