Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathalie Bodley Staff Professional Learning on the Gifted and Talented Program At SIHS all teachers aim to differentiate their teaching to meet the needs of all students. On Tuesday afternoon, the GATs team focused on giving an overview to all teachers of the history of the GATs pro- gram at SIHS. Staff were made aware of the new Department of Educations High Potential and Gifted Education Policy (2019). The policy states that The High Potential and Gifted Education Policy promotes engagement and challenge for every student, regardless of background, in every school across intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains. It supports every student to achieve their educational potential, through talent development opportunities and differenti- ated teaching and learning practices to ensure that their specific learning and wellbeing needs are met. As a staff, we are reviewing our practices through student, parent and staff feedback. The GATs team will aim to bring the program in line with current Department policy, the School Plan and to better reflect the updated GATs program direction. At the Professional Learning afternoon, staff engaged in developing questioning strategies that were provoca- tive and paradoxical for each KLA. These strategies will be used to encourage originality, higher-order thinking skills and creativity. This is only the beginning of a very exciting time for both teachers and students. The new Policy is to be implemented in all Department of Education schools by the start the 2021 school year. (nationally) of their year group. Round 2 is next week. Answers are on the back page of this newsletter. Congratulations to the following students for achieving a Distinction in the Computation and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition: Year 8: Kegan H, Mia S, Aden Z and Jasmin L; Year 9: Kaif H, Matt J and Zoe T. Great Work Year 8 English! Year 8 English have been presenting their interviews with an author or character from a novel in class this week. There have been many outstanding performances. They have demonstrated a great range of skills including, cooperating to write, rehearsing and performing scripts that included analysis of the themes and ideas of the novel, which they studied in class. 8X English based their presentations on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. This comic, science fiction novel brought out their talent for comedy and some outstanding acting skills. Some of the characters that they chose to represent included, Arthur Dent, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Slartibartfast and Marvin the paranoid android. The students used inventive strategies, such as counting down to go “on air” or representing the “death of the author” in their performances. Their understanding of some of the challenging ideas in the novel was very clear in the clever scripts they wrote. Mrs Kiernan, teacher of Year 8 English. Girls’ Rugby League Development Day Fifteen girls from Year 7 and Year 8 participated in the Rugby League skills development day on Tuesday. The day was a great opportunity for girls to try a different sport and practice fundamental skills. The girls ended up playing full contact league on a modified sized field against each other. Tackling was a new skill that most girls had just learnt earlier that morning, but they were able to apply these skills and commit to some heavy contact. Jade B, Tala G and Paige D-L won prizes at the end of the day for great sportsmanship and skilful play. The girls are to be commended on how well they represented the school and their improvement throughout the day.
