THE COMMUNITY

The City of Salem, Oregon is located in the heart of the

Willamette Valley. Salem is the capital city of

Oregon with a population of over 160,000 residents. Locat-

ed just 47 miles south of Portland, Salem is an hour from

the Cascade Mountains and an hour from the majestic Or-

egon coast and beaches. Salem is a diverse, attractive

and inviting place to live, work, and visit. The community

has a small town feel, a sense of history, and a strong

commitment to the future and quality of life.

Salem is home to the Willamette University and offers

plenty of parks and recreational activities.

THE SALEM FIRE DEPARTMENT

Protecting Oregon’s capital city since 1857, the

department provides an all hazard services with an operat-

ing budget for the fiscal year 2018-2019 of $33 million

which includes 164 full-time positions. The department re-

cently completed a Standard of Covers and a Strategic

Plan. The Salem Fire provides services through three

divisions:

Emergency Operations Division consists of (3) shifts,

(11) Stations with (11) Engine companies,

(2) Ladder companies and Special Operations Teams or-

ganized under (2) Battalions. Operations oversees, plans

and coordinates day to day emergency operations and

specialty teams.

Training and EMS Division consists of an EMS Coor-

dinator, an EMS Training Officer and a Fire Training

Officer. The Division oversees recruitment, professional

development, standards, certifications, and ambulance

contract management and compliance.

Fire and Life Safety Division consists of (5) Deputy

Fire Marshals, the division oversees all aspects of fire pre-

vention, plan reviews, fire code enforcement ,fire investi-

gations, and public education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education—Associate’s degree in Code Inspection Fire

Science, Fire Prevention, Insurance Risk, Fire or Public

Administration or possess Department of Public Safety

Standards and Training( DPSST) Fire Inspector I.

Must possess International Code Council (ICC)

Fire Inspector I and shall obtain accreditation from DPSST

as Fire Inspector I & II, Fire Investigator, ICC Fire Plans

Examiner and Oregon Inspector certification within 24

months of appointment as a condition of employment

Preferred Qualifications and Experience—Experience in

fire plan reviews and Fire Plans Examiner certification in

an organization of similar size, complexity and population

served preferred.
