POMPEI COLLEGE AIKALA

REPORT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE FOR THE YEAR 2012-2013

I INTRODUCTION

The Department of Commerce was established in 1981 along with B.A. There

were 62 students in the first batch, since it was just founded. Mrs Irene D‟Sa was

appointed as the full time Lecturer in Commerce. She managed all the subjects of

the department. In 1982, Mrs Mable Rodrigues was appointed as the full time

lecturer. She taught the Commerce subjects. Other subjects were taught by part-

time lecturer depending on the work load.

The Commercial Law paper was taught by a lawyer, Mr B.V. Pinto from

Mangalore. He served the institution for 3 years. Statistics was taught by Mr

Jayaram Bhat from Bajpe. In 1983, the Department of Commerce became a full-

pledged department. Mr Jagadeesha Holla was appointed as the full- time lecturer.

In the meantime, Mrs Irene D‟Sa, Mrs Mable Rodrigues, left the department for

better prospects. In 1984, Mr Haribert Nazareth and in the year 1986, Mr B.

Herald D‟Souza were appointed as the full time lecturers.

As the admission to the Commerce subjects increased and doubled, next year

(1985) therefore, it was decided by the management to start an additional section in

the Commerce department. The permission was granted by the J.D.C.E. and the

university. Mr Vincent D‟ Souza was appointed as the full time lecturer in 1987,

but within 3 years another college nearby at a distance of 5 k.mtrs was founded at

Kateel. Therefore, the strength also came down. The section had to be closed. As a

result Mr Vincent D‟Souza had to be transferred to another college of same

Managemnt, St. Mary‟s College, Shirva.

Mr Jagadeesha Holla was the Head of the Department. Mr Haribert Nazareth and

Mr B. Herald D‟Souza are also working as full – time lecturers. Mr Haribert

Nazareth, who was working on his Ph.D thesis under the F.I.P. programme has

successfully completed his Ph.D. degree in the year 2006.

has been transferred to another college of the same management, St. Philomena

College, Puttur, in the year 2004, June. Mr Gunakar S. a lecturer from St.

Philomena College, Puttur was transferred to our college by the management in his

place.

Presently, K.Jagadisha.Holla, who was transferred from St.Philomina College

iii) Inter Class Academic Exchange Programmes

Inter Class Academic Exchange Programme is a significant innovative idea

practiced in the Department. The students of one class prepare a seminar paper on

a subject required in another class; go there as guest speakers and present their

papers, generally using Power Point + Chalk and Talk methods. Both the „learners‟

and the „teachers‟ enjoy these sessions; because this gives them new exposure,

provides opportunities and encourages even others to opt for this kind of

exercises. The details are:

iv. Any Other Activity

The Department is striving hard- both inside the class formally and outside

informally to create social awareness and self confidence among the students.

Regular and continuous academic interactions with the students are conducted. A

system of display of paper clippings related to the subject is arranged and the

students are encouraged to involve themselves in these activities. Since the Faculty

members of the Department are a part of many of the important activities and

programmes of the College, they invite and encourage the students to participate in

different activities and thus enrich themselves.

5. Remedial Teaching There are two types of Remedial Teaching practiced in the Department:

U.G.C. Assisted Remedial Coaching Classes to the students belonging to Minority

Community

Remedial Teaching to the Slow Learners/Advanced Learners/ Common Follow-up

Action

The College gets financial assistance under the Scheme of U.G.C. Assisted

Remedial Coaching Classes to the students belonging to Minority Community and

as per the U.G.C. guidelines (provided by the Coordinator of the Scheme in the

College) the beneficiary students/subject are selected; classes/tests/evaluation is

conducted and records are accordingly maintained.

For the benefit of all the needy students of the Department, we have the system of

Remedial Teaching to the Slow Learners/Advanced Learners/ Common Follow-

up Action. On the basis of a Bridge course Test, class room interaction and

specific demands of the students, these remedial teaching classes are conducted.

Performance of the students in the qualifying examinations, Bridge course Test

and class room interaction normally become the basis for their classification as

Slow Learners, Advanced Learners and the in-between group.

Slow Learners:

VIII SELF EVALUATION

Karya Nirvahana Varadhi has been submitted to the Head of the Institution as

a part of the Self evaluation.

Future Plans

The Department of Commerce of our College intends to provide quality

education to our students. For the past years, our Department was not only

imparting education as per the curriculum schedule; but also, organizing extra and

co-curricular programmes. The department arranged programmes to facilitate

interaction of students with the personnel of industries and banks. Our students

are exposed to get better and advanced knowledge about the practical aspects and

the working of the industries and nearby banks. Efforts are made to enrich our

students and make them employable. This facilitated some of the students to face

interview and get selected in various companies.

Our main objective is to make our students employable. We educate them in these

lines, teach and encourage them so that they become competent enough to join

and to be in the job market. The efforts about those students who wish to pursue

higher studies are directed towards facilitating them to acquire good results and to

go for higher studies.

For the benefit of our students we organize various additional academic activities

in the class, we have different other associations and bodies in the college and we

encourage our students to take benefit of their activities also and as and when

need arises, we put maximum efforts to cater to their academic needs.
