THANK YOU all for your attendance at our spectacular annual conference and dinner dance at the beginning of the year. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from all who attended and look forward to the assortment of Pall-Ex events planned for 2019.

Another positive for 2019 is the popularity of MyNexus, I do hope you are reaping the benefi ts of this wonderful system. Dave and the team have worked tirelessly to create a customer portal which enhances the member and customer freight experience.

MyNexus allows full freight visibility and fi nally shows our stakeholders how great

our quality network is! Nothing makes me prouder than seeing our delivery statistics are 1.6% higher than the sector average.

I am now confi dent in our ability to provide sector-leading IT solutions, and in the coming months I look forward to seeing how Dave and the team start to mould our

new Transport Management System.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest members to the network, you’ve joined Pall-Ex at an exciting time

and I cannot wait to see you top of those KPI charts every Wednesday evening!

2018 was the year we committed to our quality mantra and 2019 will be no

different, as we continue to uphold our credentials as the No.1 pallet network for quality.

By working together we win together, and I look forward to seeing where 2019 will take our membership, as Pall-Ex becomes the leading network in not only quality but also technology and innovation.

SPRING 2019 FASTLANE

Looking to the future:Our vision for 2019 and beyond

AT LAST we have market-leading IT to support our service offering and help us win new, and retain existing, customers.

MyNexus is only the start of the next generation of IT solutions which will help shape our future for the better, reducing operating cost and enhancing customer confi dence.

The Nexus products will facilitate improvements across the organisation and aid our goal to be market-leading for the quality and reliability of the service we provide. We already consistently outperform the rest of the sector for service reliability, but the visibility we now achieve in MyNexus will undoubtedly drive service to a new level.

In 2019 we are determined to push forward and consistently deliver higher service

standards than the rest of the sector; it is important to remember that although we cannot allow the weakest points of the network to set the standard, we must work together as a team to win together for the longer term benefi t.

It’s not the team with the best players that win. It’s the players with the best team that wins!

In 2019 every depot principal must take a leadership role in encouraging their people to work together for the common good. No interdependent businesses can hope to be market leading without a robust supportive culture, tolerant but with a steadfast unstoppable passion for being number No.1.

Despite the challenges across the sector in 2018, I believe we can look forward to 2019 with considerable optimism with the prospect of monumental change on the horizon.

Pall-Ex award winners 2018For one night a year, Pall-Ex exchanges lorries and pallets for glitz and glamour at our annual ceremony for the Pall-Ex awards, which follows our annual members conference.

THESE awards celebrate the hard work of our staff and every single one of our member depots across the UK and Europe, while celebrating the achievements of the year.

The awards were held at the De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre and hosted by stand-up comedian and Take Me Out presenter Paddy McGuinness, who shares his hometown of Bolton with our founder Hilary Devey CBE.

Members from over 90 of our member depots from across the UK and Ireland attended the event, alongside our international partners and quality suppliers.

The prestigious Depot of the Year award, voted for by members of the network, went to Ilkeston-based PMB Pallet Express for its fi rst-class service.

Group managing director Kevin Buchanan selected Wembley’s Premier Palletised Ltd for the Outstanding Contribution to the Network award.

HELD at De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre, the awards event was hosted by comedian Paddy McGuinness, who shares his hometown of Bolton with Pall-Ex founder Hilary Devey CBE.

The event marked the end of a successful year for Pall-Ex, which saw the fi rm win a number of new contracts, increase pallet volume, launch new IT software to improve member and user experience and become the fi rst logistics company to be awarded the ISO 45001:2018 in occupational health and safety management.

PMB was selected as a winner by Pall-Ex due toits growth, compliance, quality distribution

Kevin Buchanan, Group Managing Director at Pall-Ex, comments: “We’re proud to support SMEs around the country and to be able to help them grow through the Pall-Ex network. Pall-Ex has accelerated its success over the last 12 months by growing its corporate revenue to over £14.5 million.

PALL-EX has attributed the 2018 corporate growth to its focus on customer service, which has enabled the fi rm to grow existing partnerships, bring in valuable new business and also publish impressive retention rates.

Pall-Ex has also rolled out new IT software that is focused on the needs of the membership as well as the end customer. MyNexus offers full consignment visibility, real-time GPS tracking, customised dashboards, images of consignments documented with electronic proof-of-delivery and geo-tagging and prepares the haulier for further growth.

Its drive to create industry-leading customer service helped Pall-Ex achieve the Customer Care Award for the fi rst time at the Motor Transport Awards, beating big names such as DPD UK to the accolade.

Pall-Ex now aims to build on its success over the next 12 months by welcoming Business Development Manager, Sacha Wilks, who has previously worked with a number of well-known pallet networks.

Kevin Buchanan, Group managing director, comments: “Our achievements over the last 12 to 18 months speak for themselves. We’re constantly working to improve our service offering, set industry benchmarks for service standards and nurture all of Pall-Ex’s partnerships.

“We have made a number of major investments across Pall-Ex’s warehouse, IT and customer service departments to enhance the customer experience, provide improved communication and offer new solutions to alleviate concerns. In particular, our IT investment offers signifi cant improvements for customers and network members by providing full visibility on consignments.

“This has enabled us to secure our position as industry leaders by retaining our existing customer base and welcoming a raft of new customers, leading to huge corporate growth

over the last 12 months.

Pall-Ex will continue its partnerships with big names, including Tile Mountain,

Aggregate Industries and Clark Drain in 2019 and continue major contracts with Staples Solutions, Soudal (UK) Ltd and Hydrogarden.

Agnes Robinson from Soudal comments: “Pall-Ex don’t just offer a quality logistics solution, they offer a partnership. Our account manager is always on hand and our bespoke KPIs help us to present our delivery stats to the rest of the board. We look forward to continuing our partnership throughout 2019 and beyond.”

Pall-Ex’s new health & safetyaccreditation

PALL-EX has achieved accreditation for the ISO 45001:2018 in Occupational Health and Safety Management. This is a new International standard that gives organisations a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions.

The standard is risk-based and uses the ‘plan-do-check-act’ and high-level structure that are common to all management system standards.

An audit for the accreditation highlighted the benefi ts of a £250,000 forklift truck investment, which has seen its fl eet clock up 559,502 miles in a year– the equivalent of driving to the moon and back.

Forklift accident fi gures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) demonstrates the need for improved training and

investment across the industry; 25% of workplace transport injuries are a direct result of forklift truck accidents, with 1,300 UK employees hospitalised each year with serious injuries following a forklift accident.

The fl eet of 45 Hyster H2.0FT Advance forklift trucks has improved effi ciency and safety at its Coalville hub, which handles thousands of pallets daily thanks to features including blue light safety technology, a

telematics system to disable the engine if an error or impact is detected and with seatbelt lockout which will not allow the FLT to operate if the seatbelt is not en-gaged.

Kevin Buchanan, Group Managing Director at Pall-Ex, comments:

“This latest achievement demonstrates Pall-Ex’s commitment to not only providing

the best and safest working environment we can for our staff, but to use the discipline and rigour required to achieve such a standard to drive operational excellence.

“This is a great accreditation to achieve and further cements our mission to be market leaders; we want to be the number one network for all, for our members, customers and staff, and this underlines that quality is at the forefront of our entire operation.

“We have made a major investment in our forklift truck fl eet, which is maximising safety within our hub, while the forklift truck driver academy we have created ensures all drivers receive regular refresher training to ensure we have a quality workforce operating to the highest standards.

“We started 2018 on the right note by achieving the ISO 9001:2015 standard across our network, so we’re proud to be ending it with another signifi cant fi rst in the sector by obtaining this accreditation.”

Pall-Ex has underlined its commitment to being market leading by promoting health and safety in the logistics industry after becoming the fi rst pallet network to achieve another gold standard - the latest ISO accreditation.

“THIS IS A GREAT ACCREDITATION TO

ACHIEVE AND FURTHER CEMENTS OUR MISSION TO

BE MARKET LEADERS”

BASED in Retford, Nottinghamshire, The Luxury Wood Company offers a range of premium products, supplying both the trade market and domestic customers directly. In its fi rst year the company took £100,000 in sales, a fi gure that has leapt to £3.5 million in 2018.

David explains: “We have been really surprised by the growing demand. We knew there was a gap in the market in terms of supplying high-end products, but we are astounded by how quickly demand has increased.

“Flexibility is essential to a business with seasonal peaks like us and it was uneconomical to run our own trucks, especially as we wanted to be a national supplier. A pallet network was the only solution which would enable us to ship overnight and deliver anywhere in the UK.”

Pallet networks have thrived with the ecommerce boom. With the ability to react quickly to rapid order increases and a strategic distribution network, pallet networks are the scalable transport solution independent online retailers need when otherwise lacking resources for quick growth.

The Luxury Wood Company had tried every pallet network service, but never quite found

the right fi t. In 2015, tired of the service it had received, the company switched hauliers, choosing fellow East Midlands fi rm Pall-Ex.

David adds: “We tried all of the other networks, but they just weren’t the right fi t. We supply a premium product and we want the customer service of our distributors to echo our own ethos and that means a quality customer experience.

“Pall-Ex is uniquely qualifi ed to distribute solid fuel to almost any home in the UK, often within 24 hours of dispatch from our East Midlands warehouse. The size of the network enables us to reach any postcode and the pallet model ensures we can scale up for peak periods and down for slower periods. It is a haulage method that is designed for these peaks and troughs and helps small family-run businesses like us achieve success.”

Since The Luxury Wood Company enlisted Pall-Ex’s services in August 2015, the logistics giant has delivered 38,000 pallets of fuel across the UK with a 99% success rate. During its seasonal peak, which typically runs from December to February, the premier fuel suppliers send around 160 pallets a day through

Pall-Ex’s Coalville hub, ready for its network of hauliers to transport to every corner of the country.

In March 2018, the company awarded a further £1m worth of its sales to Pall-Ex for pallet distribution.

David adds: “Getting the goods there is very important to Pall-Ex and to us, so their culture refl ects our needs. Their willingness and determination to rectify even the smallest issue is of great benefi t to our customers and our operation as we continue to grow.”

Mark Steel, Sales and Marketing Director at Pall-Ex, comments: “The Luxury Wood company represents a real challenge for the delivery of B2C pallets and we have worked hard as a partnership to provide a delivery service to rival that of the parcel companies. Many of its clients are in remote and/or rural locations so items such as email/SMS notifi cations, electric pallet trucks and a growing fl eet of curtain-sided 3.5T vehicles has enabled us to grow with them and facilitate such a high level of on time in full (OTIF) deliveries.

“We have also expanded our IT offering to the latest ‘MyNexus’ portal which The Luxury Wood company actually helped us design! This customer portal has sector-leading fi nal-mile visibility which makes their freight management very simple and accurate. It’s a really strong partnership and we are proud to have The Luxury Wood company amongst our portfolio of corporate clients.”

“IT’S A REALLY STRONG PARTNERSHIP AND WE ARE PROUD TO HAVE THE LUXURY WOOD

COMPANY AMONGST OUR PORTFOLIO OF

CORPORATE CLIENTS.”

When David Secker launched an online business in 2011, he had little idea how quickly the company would grow. Recognising a lack of quality wood fuel in the market, as consumers increasingly searched for clean-burning and sustainable forms of energy to heat their homes, he established The Luxury Wood Company. However, he had no idea of the important role haulage would play intransforming his local business into a national one.

DEVELOPED in-house by the Pall-Ex IT team, MyNexus will provide next-level track and trace capabilities on consignments across the fi rm’s UK delivery network. Created with input from Pall-Ex’s own members, B2B customers and B2C customers, the MyNexus software will provide full visibility on all consignments for the fi rst time.

The new cloud-based system has the scale to develop, while consultation with Pall-Ex’s international partnerships ensures compatability across Europe, with a full international roll-out planned for 2019. It is designed with customer usability in mind and benefi ts from a number of key features to support the growth of Pall-Ex as it moves further into the B2C market.

Pall-Ex network members will be able to access a version which shows all of their customers’ freight, while end customers will be able to view a version showing only their own consignments.

This will support Pall-Ex members with vehicle planning and customer freight expectations, while reducing phone calls to customer services.

David Waterman, Business Development Manager at Neil Bomford Haulage Ltd comments: “Our customers really like MyNexus and the system has been well

received, with a lot of positive feedback. This software has projected us ahead of the competition, and it provides clients with all the information they need. More importantly, MyNexus has helped us reduce the number of calls into the offi ce by about 30%.”

The launch of MyNexus marks the next stage in Pall-Ex’s IT investment, following the roll out of NexusGo, the mobile sign on glass APP launched in October 2017.

Dave Dunhill, Director of IT at Pall-Ex, comments: “Having the team based in-house, at the heart of the business, really helps us understand the needs of customers and members, and encompass their requirements. I’m incredibly proud of MyNexus and look forward to releasing additional features to the system throughout 2019.”

PALL-EX is proud to yet again be partnering with British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) ace, Adam Morgan and his Ciceley Motorsport team, as he mounts an assault on the title in 2019. Last year, the Lancashire based driver took three race victories, fi nishing a strong 7th in the championship overall.

We are looking forward to seeing what Adam and the Ciceley Motorsport team can achieve this year. Good luck Adam!

Pall-Ex’s Sales and Marketing Director enjoyed a successful fi rst season of racing in the VAG Trophy last year, the support class of the Volkswagen Racing Cup, winning four races, which was enough to claim 2nd place in the championship overall.

Now he is looking to make the step up to the main championship, racing against drivers who have competed in some of the premier race series in the UK and Europe, including the British Touring Car Championship. The Volkswagen Racing Cup will start on the 22nd April at the picturesque Oulton Park in Cheshire.

As the season approaches, Mark is excited about the challenge and has said; “I can’t wait to get into the car and out onto a track again. Last season was a huge learning curve as it was my fi rst season but I know this year will be just as challenging racing with the big boys. I am excited to get going at Oulton Park and hopefully we can enjoy another successful season in 2019.”

Mark has a new car for this season, a MK7 Golf, which will compete on slick racing tyres, another change from last year’s semi-slicks.

When asked about the upgraded car, Mark said: “It’s going to look great and most importantly be great to drive. The team at Slide Sports really know how to put a car together and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with throughout the season. I have to say a huge thank you to my sponsors too, from last year and for the upcoming season. This is a dream to be able to race and they have made my dream a reality, so I can’t thank them enough.”

Pall-Ex will be following Adam and Marks journey throughout the 2019 season, and posting regular updates and race reports.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2019 season following Adam Morgan and Pall-Ex’s own Mark Steel.

Pall-Ex Bake Off raises money for MacmillanPALL-EX raised an impressive £124 for the cancer charity’s coffee morning appeal thanks to a contest judged by former Great British Bake Off: The Professionals contestant, Marta Child, and Pall-Ex’s resident foodie, Hub Coordinator, Toby Iliffe.

Staff battled it out to be named Star Baker by the pair, who had a tough job taste testing 10 creations to decide the winning entry.

Toby comments: “It was a diffi cult task determining the soggy bottoms from the showstoppers. It’s been a great experience getting everyone at Pall-Ex involved and to see so many entries for the competition. We are delighted to have raised such a signifi cant sum for Macmillan.”

Professional baker Marta, who owns Bom Bom Patisserie in Loughborough, comments:

“The judging was really tough, but in the end, we were looking for a cake with real wow-factor; an impressive mix of decoration and taste, as well as originality.”

The company chose a Great British Bake Off-style event to raise money for charity due to the logistics industry playing a key role in keeping Britain’s bakery sector baking.

Pall-Ex network member Mars-Jones Ltd, which is based in North Wales, has been one of Tate & Lyle’s storage and distribution partners for many years. Tate & Lyle is a global provider of food solutions, which

enable food and beverage manufacturers to increase or maintain stability, reduce sugar, fat and calories, and add nutrition to their products. The ingredient blends produced at its facility in Mold, Flintshire, are transported by Mars Jones to Tate & Lyle’s customers across the UK and stored for distribution throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Cycling challenge raises £8,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UKPall-Ex supported staff from Briggs Equipment UK in a 350-mile cycling challenge from Cumbernauld to Cannock.

PETER Jones, Andy Keyworth, Adam Alderson and Kathryn Hyde recently completed the challenge during the fi rst week of October, raising an incredible £8,000 for charity their partner, Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Peter Jones, Group Managing Director at Briggs Equipment, said; “We are absolutely delighted with the amount of support we received for the challenge, both from the rest of the team at Briggs, the corporate partnerships team at Alzheimer’s Research UK, and from our sponsors who made the physical demands of the challenge totally worth it.

“We far exceeded our target of £5,000 thanks to the contributions of Baumann Attachments, Cascade Attachments, CIRM, Combilift, Dbfb Communications, Fork Truck Control, Hako, Hoppecke, HROC, HSBC, Hyster, Inchcape, Indizine, Interfi t, Pall-Ex, Pinsent Masons, Secondsight, Travis Perkins, TVH, Wells Fargo and Yale.”

Katy Abraham, Corporate Partnerships Offi cer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “What an incredible challenge! We couldn’t be more grateful to the team at Briggs Equipment for taking on such a demanding test of their stamina in support of our work. The money raised is enough to fund vital resources and equipment for our scientists and will go a long way in making life-changing breakthroughs possible.

“There are currently no treatments available to stop or cure the diseases that

cause dementia, but with companies like Briggs and the companies who supported them in this challenge by our side, we can change this picture.”

Aylesbury Logistics ‘Get Your Bangers Out’A convoy of cars destined for the scrapheap has completed the mammoth 1850 mile journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats in aid of charity.

NINE teams took part in the ‘Get Your Bangers Out’ challenge (GYBO), spanning from Friday to Monday morning, with the aim to raise money and awareness for Sparkles, a charity supporting children living with Downs Syndrome in and around Buckinghamshire.

Organisers Dave Young, Simon Redford and Lewis Bleasdale, owners of Pall-Ex member, Aylesbury Logistics Ltd, all took part too, and are really pleased with the weekend.

Dave comments; “The weekend can only be described as a huge success. There were so

many highlights along the way, and the support from the public on both social media and the roadside was overwhelming. We didn’t believe for a second people would show the support they did.”

The journey began at the most westerly point of the UK, Land’s End in Cornwall on Friday morning at 7:30 am. The convoy then headed northbound, and over the next three days completed the gruelling journey to the top of Scotland, stopping only for sleep and fuel.

The winners of the challenge were team ‘Piston Broke’ in their unicorn themed Ford

Escort. The team are already looking forward to next year’s event and is encouraged by the success of GYBO 2018.

Dave says; “At the moment it looks like we will raise over £7,000, which is amazing! No-one expected GYBO to be what it became; we camped, made friends, laughed so much, and the convoy had a fl eet of radios that kept everyone in the loop!” GYBO will return in 2019, and it is hoped more teams will take on the challenge in aid of Sparkles.

WHAT IS THE MOST ENJOYABLE ASPECT OF YOUR JOB? Development of colleagues, and the growth of their self-belief. Too often I have moved into a new operation to find colleagues low on morale, low on confidence because they had become used to not being successful.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GREAT WORKING TEAM? I have used the same formula for years now because it works: People: Always look to build a team of

the right people with the right skills. Environment: Put them in the right environment, by making sure its safe, fun and they feel part of something bigger. Service: These guys will then focus on the service elements of the day, ensuring that people are doing what needs to be done and keeping customers aware. Profit: It feeds off the above activity, meaning the operation begins to run efficiently and costs become controllable.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN LOGISTICS? I have worked in logistics for almost 25 years. I enjoy bringing on new customers and seeing the trailer load going from empty to slowly filling up.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GREAT WORKING TEAM? The collaboration between operations and sales, working on identified areas for growth and supporting each other with new business and customer care.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN LOGISTICS? I have worked in the logistics industry for 31 years, since I left school. I love the industry and no two days are ever the same.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? I have a varied role, from organising the trunking and checking numbers to staff recruitment. I enjoy the satisfaction of getting all my work done each and every day.

AWARD-WINNING Ace Express is creating new jobs to support the double-digit growth it aims to achieve in 2019, having grown its turnover by €2 million from €26.272 million in 2017 to €28.2 million in 2018.

Ace Express, a family-run business based in North County Dublin, is recruiting a business development manager and a number of sales executives to support its logistics services across road, sea and air in Ireland, the UK and Europe.

It is the only freight company in Ireland to have won the prestigious Deloitte Best Managed Company Award for 10 consecutive years.

Since 2004 the company’s success has been strengthened by its membership of the Pall-Ex network – a strategic move that has enabled an expansion of its core business, importing and exporting from the UK.

The company has sped ahead of its peers since it was established by Managing Director, Philip Tracey, in 1989, having grown from a two-man team into a workforce of 106 across 12 depots in Southern and Northern Ireland, with additional services in warehousing, customs clearance and bonded warehousing.

Commercial Director, Mark Tracey, swapped a career in electronics engineering to join his brother’s company in 1994.

Mark comments: “We’re proud to be Ireland’s largest privately owned and operated freight distribution company and to be celebrating our 30th year, especially as we’ve come from such humble beginnings.

“In 1989, Philip was saving to buy a house but used the money to start Ace Express instead. He launched the business from a shared desk in an offi ce in St Andrew’s Street in Dublin and although we’ve moved several times since then, we’re proud to say that we’ve retained some original customers and stood by our founding principles.

“Our biggest challenge has been fi nding and securing the right partners to support our ethos. We need our partners in the UK to be as mindful and dedicated to the delivery service as we are and that means stand out customer service.

It has taken time but fi nding Pall-Ex and joining its network is without a doubt one of the best decisions we

have ever made and has been instrumental to our growth. The bar is consistently raised by Pall-Ex in their approach to distribution and customer service; they are aiming to be the

best, and we have the same ethos.”

Even with Brexit on the horizon, Ace Express sees a positive future and new opportunities ahead for the company.

Mark adds: “We see Brexit as a new opportunity for the company and are as

prepared as we can be. Ace Express has Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status – a quality accreditation that highlights our customs procedures as being effi cient and compliant – and we expect to see demand for our customs clearance service increase.

“Our longevity is down to our ability to adapt our services to the changing needs of our customers, which we will continue to do through Brexit and beyond.”

Kevin Buchanan, Group Managing Director at Pall-Ex, comments: “Ace Express has been a real asset to the Pall-Ex network and we are delighted to be celebrating this milestone with the company. Our shared ethos of providing high standards of customer service has made this a successful partnership that has enabled both businesses to benefi t and grow.”

ABILITY TO ADAPT OUR SERVICES TO

THE CHANGING NEEDS OF OUR CUSTOMERS”

Member story: P2P LogisticsLocated in the heart of England in Staffordshire, P2P Logistics is ideally located to cover the Midlands and beyond and serves as a key depot in our pallet freight distribution network.

Providing customers with a complete transport solution, P2P Logistics was established in 2003 by Mark Whitehead, attracting customers from day one through detail-oriented management and high-quality customer service, alongside competitive rates. P2P Logistics now has an impressive fleet of 15 lorries and 25 vans, which has grown steadily since 2003.

JOINING THE PALL-EX NETWORK

P2P joined the Pall-Ex freight distribution network as a member in 2010 in order to grow their customer base and business.Joining after growing under a previous pallet network, P2P was looking for a partner who could provide wider coverage through a larger network and build a valuable long-term relationship. The partnership between P2P and Pall-Ex has been both practical and successful, providing a mechanism to offer customers a pallet delivery service which is both flexible and reliable.

Mark Barfoot, Director at P2P Logistics, says:“Pall-Ex has provided a better economy of scale and better efficiency in terms of making sure we have no space left in our trunks. We can also offer great rates for delivery, it truly is a win-win situation.”

COMPLETE COVERAGE, OFFERING SAVINGS TO CUSTOMERS

The biggest benefit to joining the Pall-Ex network is to diversify and improve the range of services P2P offers to customers. With over 90 depots and access to over 7,000 vehicles across the country, the Pall-Ex palletised freight distribution network means that daily reach can cover every area of the UK. This has provided a platform for P2P to offer their customers cost-effective and fast national coverage. These savings, achieved through saving on wasted mileage and more efficient supply chains, means P2P can keep their prices competitive.

“The pallet network model enables us to sell to a broad range of clients alongside filling up empty space we discover on trailers. On the other side, it also helps us when we have overspill, as we can run this to another member of the network for a preferential rate.Pall-Ex’s membership is well thought out – we maximise our efficiency and reduce operating costs.”

INCREASING FUEL EFFICIENCY THROUGH TRACKING TECHNOLOGY

P2P’s decision to join the Pall-Ex network was driven by a need to improve profit margins and speed up growth within the pallet area of the business. However, another advantage to joining the network was savings through a reduced carbon output through cut mileage, which helps with both savings and green credentials. Carbon output can be reduced by up to 54% using a pallet network compared to similar journeys made outside of the network.

Pall-Ex’s technology also helps improve on speed and reduce administration costs, leaving P2P Logistics with more time to manage their customers. The capabilities of the new MyNexus software are really promising. It will provide clarity across every delivery from start to finish, which helps both our operations and our customers.”

THE FUTURE OF P2P LOGISTICS AND PALL-EX

As our membership continues to grow, we also see growth among our key members across the network, and P2P Logistics is another fast-growing success story, adding £700,000 worth of sales over the last 12 months, with plans to achieve the same level of growth in 2019.

TO date distribution specialist, A.D.D. Express Ltd from Elland have invested in 14 new electric pump trucks, one for each of their C&D vehicles. Mark Dunne, Operations Director at A.D.D. Express comments:

“This investment has made a real difference in our depot. Our drivers think the new equipment is fantastic and would hate to have to revert back to the traditional style pallet trucks. They certainly help with deliveries on a slight incline where the driver would struggle with a normal Pallet Truck. The biggest difference is from a Health and Safety point of view, the risk of injury for our drivers has reduced significantly using the powered trucks.

I think these are a worthy investment, they are more expensive than a traditional pallet truck however the benefits far outweigh the cost. When we recruit drivers this is also an attraction for new drivers knowing that they have the correct equipment for the job”.

DVF Racing wins Carrera Cup GB

COMING into the day the Cypriot was eight points behind rival Dino Zamparelli, but two podium fi nishes were enough to give him the title after both 17-lap races.

Only able to qualify in sixth place on Saturday afternoon, things looked bleak for Tio’s chances. However, Zamparelli lost control of his car on coolant dropped by another entrant while leading race one and fell to the rear of the fi eld, meaning Tio’s third-place put the pair level on points going into the fi nal contest of the year.

Starting fi fth for that race, Tio did well to avoid a spin from pole-sitter Michael Caine and attempted to take second place from Tom Jackson before being pushed wide and falling back to fourth. He kept calm and patiently waited for his moment to pass Jackson later in the race, to score the second podium and claim an emotional championship victory.

Refl ecting on the weekend, and the season, Tio said; “It’s an amazing feeling. I can’t fi nd the words at the moment to describe it, but from the day that this deal happened, we’ve just tried our best to do everything possible to make this happen and fi nally, we did it. We were so consistent through all our races, we had many podiums, but we were just missing the edge sometimes to fi nish on a high. Overall it has just been a great, great season.”

It was also a weekend of success for DVF Racing’s David Fairbrother and Richard Hawken in the Am category. Capping a sweet return after missing several races this season, David fi nished second in race one and held off late pressure from Richard in race two to claim third.

David commented; “A bunch of daft lads have just won the Carrera Cup! The fi rst race was really good, and we were on the podium again with second. In the second race I had some tyre issues, and the pressures went up a little bit, so I had to back off and fell into the

clutches of Richard and had to defend for the last three laps. He got along-side once, but we were able to bring it home for another podium in third place.

It’s been a mega weekend, and the team have just done a great job. It makes me very proud.”

DVF Racing is a racing team run by Dave Fairbrother, Depot Principle of ADD Express. Pall-Ex are proud to support DVF Racing, and look forward to their continued success in the 2019 season.

Member story: K2 Transport

K2 TRANSPORT joined the Pall-Ex freight distribution network in 2016 in order to diversify their customer base by providing specialised pallet delivery services alongside general haulage services. Membership of the Pall-Ex network helped boost business growth while still retaining exceptional standards for customer service and clients.

K2 also grew their general haulage base through their involvement with the Pall-Ex network, which was a signifi cant benefi t for the business.

Being part of a network means gaining the benefi ts of a network. Owner Nick Pearce elaborates:

“We have grown a network where we can help each other – if we have a slow day, we can ease pressure off those who have more to transport, and vice versa. Joining the membership was a natural step for K2 Transport and has acted as a catalyst for business growth, allowing us to diversify into new markets and increase our client base.”

PROVIDING QUALITY SERVICES WITH PALL-EX

K2 Transport joined Pall-Ex initially as a single depot, so staff could work hard on ‘getting it right’ before expanding. K2’s aim is to consistently deliver when it comes to customer expectations, ensuring the right product arrives at the time expected. This need for quality is driven by the mantra:

“We’re only as good as our worst day!”

Pall-Ex, the leading freight distribution network for quality, was a natural partner choice for K2 Transport, providing tools and technology to help deliver quality and customer satisfaction consistently.

K2 Transport’s rural location means a niche customer base and a need to ‘drive smarter’. Technology such as the new MyNexus portal, where depots can track pallet deliveries in real-time and keep customers informed, helps with the sometimes unpredictable nature of rural delivery.

“MyNexus is brilliant, and a welcome addition to what Pall-Ex offers. It helps network members and, most importantly, the customer experience”.

BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH THE PALL-EX NETWORK

The network helps with not just expanding your reach as a logistics provider, but as a marketing tool that boosts brand awareness, providing a positive effect across all services,

not just pallet distribution.

The far reach of the network has also helped K2 Transport give their customers what they need. K2 Transport works closely with our member in Ireland, Ace Express, to transport pallets

across the island. Of course, membership of the Pall-Ex network also means depot customers can expand their global reach, with access to the European Pall-Ex networks.

THE FUTURE OF K2 TRANSPORT - GROWTH IN THE ERA OF NEXT DAY DELIVERY

The future is looking great for K2 Transport, with momentum continually pushing the business forward.

“As we see eCommerce growing and customers buying through independent sellers on marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay, we are now investing further in our digital presence and the digital arm of the business”.

Founded and run by Nick Pearce and Kim Brand, K2 Transport was established in Sussex in 2013. The full-service logistics provider then saw fast growth from a single lorry to a fl eet of 14 vehicles in 2018, with plenty of plans for the future.

WHAT HAVE THE HIGHLIGHTS/ SUCCESSES BEEN IN 2018?

Almost 60% of the net daily volumes handled by Pall-Ex Group are generated within mainland Europe. This fi gure continues to grow month-on-month as our European networks continue to develop, registering consecutive record-breaking months.

Poland has seen strong volume development since their launch in October 2017 and Bulgaria also sees growth despite operating in a very challenging market. Each network is focused intently on quality and service and by staying true to this intent are regularly attracting new customers.

HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY HELPED TO IMPROVE THE GROWTH?

NexusConnect has empowered members throughout Europe to enjoy a more seamless International service; providing them with systemised rates (for consignments between 1-5 pallets), as well as the ability to print international labels and documentation.

Further IT development will include additional track-and-trace integrations to help

deliver the goal of full visibility and the function to download a POD. MyNexus is in the process of being rolled out across our European network as we speak. This new customer-facing system is poised to support a much improved customer experience and interaction, helping our members to better service existing customers and attract new ones.

WHAT MAKES FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONAL PARTNER?

Each partner has its particular operating conditions and nuances, however as you spend more and more time with each partner listening to their staff and visiting them in their environments; you can take a step back and review theterritories as a whole.

Generally, our experiences are more similar than not. Successful International partners are those who lead with passion and share this passion within their membership. The success of the partner is directly linked with their members and their relationship with them; at the core, it is the sum efforts of the 450 plus regional members across Europe. It is their entrepreneurial and progressive spirit

which leads them to success and in turn is refl ected in the success of the network they contribute to.

Successful partners are those who build close relationships between members, often making diffi cult decisions for the greater good of the network. Freight balance is a crucial indicator, and the efforts in achieving freight balance is essential for all partners.

Partners who are active in supplementing members volumes with a stream of central/corporate clients is also key to network success. Quality binds us together; it is the focus on being able to provide a quality service which allows us collectively to win customers and drive new volume. Running a developing network is not an easy task, the defi nition of a network continues to change over time and in line with the market conditions. As we are, our partners are visionary in delivering success across Europe.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO CONTINUE TO GROW THE EUROPEAN NETWORK THROUGHOUT 2019?

to sign up during the year. Continued efforts will remain to Internationalise our business by not only supporting established partners with development guidance and support but also to start to achieve the benefi ts of a connected European network.

As we move into developing our capabilities we expect more and more members to adopt NexusConnect, and start to promote and sell the Pall-Ex Connect services. Developing International traffi c provides our members with an additional service offering, often at a higher margin than domestic movements.

DO YOU THINK BREXIT WILL AFFECT GROWTH IN 2019?

I think the short answer is ‘Yes’ and in very complex ways.

History has shown us that supply chains will always fl ow to the most effi cient modes and methods of distribution (e.g. from shipping docks to mass-containerisation practices). We have spent years streamlining our supply chains to run to the leanest and frictionless principles. With Brexit, and in the advent of any possible frictions or trading obstacles, I

am sure the economics will be affected (for better or worse) affecting growth more generally.

Changing almost 40 years of established process will not be easy, there will be generations who have not seen customs procedures at all. With the EU being one of our most active trading partners over recent times, coupled with our ‘island’ state, Brexit will indeed offer opportunities for some (eg warehousing/stockpiling) as well as challenges for others.

Of course, at this stage it’s hard to speculate on the effects of Brexit, however, it is likely to change economic pressures; this could include further stress on resources (physical or human), as well as shifts in the supply and demand of products.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES WE WILL FACE IN 2019?

Pall-Ex will move even closer to our goal of Internationalisation. We have invested the last ten years or so building fi rst and last mile networks across Europe. These networks are now maturing and providing a fantastic opportunity to our members to start to sell

our Pall-Ex Connect services. We envisage ourselves competing in the widely accepted ‘Groupage’ market focusing on fi xed priced, easy to book and easy to track Less-then-Truckload space.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2019? TRANSPORT LOGISTIC?

Pall-Ex will be exhibiting at the TransportLogistic Show in Munich. We will be showcasing our Brand in Hall A5 on Stand 325/426.

Presence at these shows supports our Pan-European strategy to spearhead our brand as a growing force in and around Europe. As previously mentioned, 2019 will also see new Partners join our network and provide further connectivity for our members across Europe.

Pall-Ex Group will be exhibiting at Transport Logistic 4-7 June 2019 in Munich.

Pall-Ex Italia marks 10th anniversary with record turnover Pall-Ex is celebrating 10 years of its European operation thanks to Pall-Ex Italia, which has achieved record annual turnover and strong double-digit growth, year-on-year since 2012.

THE logistics giant has been instrumental in establishing the pallet distribution model within Italy, after selecting the country as its fi rst location for European expansion a decade ago.

It has also played a key role in supporting Pall-Ex’s European growth, as the company now operates networks across eight countries in mainland Europe.

Pall-Ex Italia now moves around nearly 2 million pallets annually, with thousands of pallets passing through its eight hubs every night – a huge increase from the 160 pallets it handled on its fi rst night of operation.Hub locations include major cities such as Milan, Bologna, Florence, Ancona and Naples, and cover a total of 25,000 square metres.

As a pallet network, Pall-Ex Italia relies on its members - established local hauliers - to deliver freight and now has four times the

number of members it launched with.Anand Assi, International Development Director, comments: “Pall-Ex Italia became our fi rst network in mainland Europe in 2009 and has been pivotal in establishing Pall-Ex internationally; we now have over 450 members across Europe who work with us to improve effi ciency across the continent.

“We have also introduced a new distribution model to Italy, which has become the preferred distribution of choice for customers wanting the best value, highest quality and most reliable delivery.“The network volume growth Pall-Ex Italia has seen over the last 10 years demonstrates the local need for hub-and-spoke distribution. The benefi ts to the local market have been huge, increasing fl exibility and visibility for the customer, while reducing the number of vehicles on the road.”

Giovanni Pallastrelli, International Director for Pall-Ex Italia, comments: “From the very beginning we wanted to create a new business model in Italy, which incorporated members working together to share objectives and operate as a single entity.

“Pall-Ex Italia has made a major contribution to changing the old industry model: hundreds of small couriers, who used to fi ght for custom with a limited range of action, are now part of a bigger and centralised system. This system has been created by the couriers themselves and they have had the vision and capability to transform themselves into a new entity.

“I would say that the pallet model is well established now in Italy, in fact, 10 years ago

customers expected to receive a price based on the weight of the shipment, now it is natural for them to request a per pallet price.

“However, the biggest success has been establishing the great reputation of

the network. We are now considered one of the top players on the market for quality, high performance, reliability and safety of goods. The increase we have seen in both pallet volumes and the number of members is testament to this.”

“THE NETWORK VOLUME GROWTH PALL-EX ITALIA HAS SEEN OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS DEMONSTRATES

THE LOCAL NEED FOR HUB-AND-SPOKE DISTRIBUTION. ”
