DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
REPORT 2015-16
Department of Physics celebrated National Science Day 2016. The celebration was
sponsored by, Kerala State Council for Science, technology and Environment’ and supported by
‘Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India’. The celebration consisted of an Invited
Lecture and an Inter Collegiate Science Quiz. The National Science Day was successfully
celebrated and the true spirit of observance of this important day was established.

The Programme started at 1.30pm in the college auditorium. More than 250
students and many faculty members from various departments gathered in the auditorium. The
co-ordinator Muhammed Abdul hakkeem delivered the welcome Address. He explained the
significance of Nobel Prize winning discovery of Raman Effect by C V Raman on 28th February
1928, and its connection with National Science Day. He explained the objectives of observing
National science Day. He introduced the resource person Dr. Anu Gopinath.The co-ordinator
pointed out that Dr. Anu Gopinath is the right person to be brought in front of a women
student community because she had achieved many awards and honours like Young Women
scientist Award, Common Wealth Academic Staff Fellowship in UK etc., and she had a research
experience of 36 days at Arctic pole of earth as a part of Indian Arctic Expedition 2014(Resume
attached). He opined that the observance of National Science Day helps to inculcate scientific
temper in students scientific thoughts in common people.
The vice Principal of the college Dr. C M Abdul Salam presided over the function.
He congratulated the coordinators of the programme for organizing the celebration and for
bringing an eminent researcher in front of the students. He persuaded the students to embrace
motivation from the resource person’s experiences and to dream a scientific future, and to
become an asset for the nation.

Dr. Anu Gopinath formally inaugurated the function and delivered an
interesting lecture about the scope and needs environmental research, with special reference
to the Arctic Polar region. Her research experience as a part of Indian Arctic Expedition 2014

triggered a great scientific enthusiasm among the students. She explained the various research
possibilities that the students from various science disciplines can do in the polar region of
earth. All students were motivated in the true spirit of scientific research, and their active
interaction after the session was the evidence for it. Thus, the programme achieved the main
objectives of the observance of National Science Day.
Mr. Abdul Rof (Head of Mathematics) and Kum. Twinkle C Raju (College
Union Chair Person) felicitated over the function. Mr. Sabeer v, Asst. Professor of Physics
delivered the Vote of thanks. The session was dispersed at 4.30 pm.

Inter Collegiate Science Quiz
24th February 2016, Wednesday
Time: 9.30 am
Venue: College Auditorium
As a part of national Science day celebrations, we organized an Inter
collegiate Science Quiz, purely based on science, for UG students of Arts and
Science colleges. More than seventy colleges were invited and 24 teams from
fifteen colleges participated in the event. The quiz consisted of Preliminary Round
and Final Rounds. The Preliminary round was an objective examination
comprising twenty questions for twenty minutes. Six teams securing highest
marks in the Preliminary round were selected for the Final Rounds. The
Preliminary round was conducted in the Seminar Hall. The teams qualified for the
Final Rounds are:

2) Rinshad P & Shahul Ameen (MES Mampad College)
3) Shirin K P & Unnimaya K S ( St. Mary’s College, Puthenangadi)
4) Vivekenand V & Sreerag K S (Ideal Arts and Science College, Cherpulassery)
5) Siddeekh Ali K & Hariprasad E G ( MES Ponnani College)
6) Nidheesh P K & Midhun P R (Govt. College, Malappuram)
The Final Rounds were conducted in the auditorium as a stage
show. The Final consisted of five rounds. The questions covered all fundamental
branches of science, from physical science and life science. The questions were
prepared by the coordinator Muhammed Abdul Hakkeem and presented by Mrs.
A K Shahina Mol, Asst. Professor of English.

I Place: Vivekanand V & Sreerag KS ( Ideal Arts and Science College Cherpulassery)
Principal Dr. C Saidalavi handed over the Prizes and certificates to the winners.
The cash prizes were offered by the college management committee.
INVITED LECTURE
On 29-02-2016, an invited lecture was organized on the break-through discovery of
‘Gravitational waves’ by LIGO scientific collaboration. The session was handled by Mr.
Muhammed Saleem, a member of LIGO and SRF at IISER Trivandrum. The talk enlightened the
young minds towards ongoing scientific developments.
OTHER EVENTS
Mr. Muhammed Abdul Hakkeem participated in an orientation program
conducted by UGC-HRDC, University of Calicut from 04-09-2015 to 01-10-2015.
