Theoretical philosophy C 30 credits The Course consists of three parts:
• C-essay, 15 credits First meeting of the obligatory essay seminar in theoretical philosophy takes place Monday January 21, 13:15-15:00 in Eng2-1023
• Optional course 1, 7,5 credits • Optional course 2, 7,5 credits
Exchange students, however, have a choice: instead of writing the C-essay they may take additional two optional courses. Optional courses vary from term to term. This term – Spring 2019 – we give four optional courses:

Aesthetics of Music 7,5 credits Thursdays 10.15-12 in Musicology Dept Seminar room F3 (2-0048)
Basic outline
This masters-level seminar course provides in-depth acquaintance with key issues in the aesthetics of music, and is designed equally for students with backgrounds in musicology and philosophical aesthetics. Following an introduction to important concepts in the philosophy of music, the course will first focus on the history of musical aesthetics with three seminars devoted to the prominent issues and sources from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries respectively. The second part of the course will focus on themes of particular relevance to the contemporary study of musical aesthetics. The teaching language of the course is English. The reading materials are also in English.
Course requirements
Students are required to attend seminars and be prepared to discuss the reading
prescribed in each case. The examination will take the form of an extended essay (approx. 3-4000 words) answering a question of the student’s choice. The proposed subject matter and formulation of the essay question must be agreed in advance.
Students will give 15-minute presentations on their chosen essay assignments in the final seminar on 28 March, distributing written drafts two days previously on 26 March. In addition to open discussion, each presentation will receive two brief (5 minute) replies from participating students in order to ensure detailed feedback that can be incorporated into the process of revising the essays for final submission on 12 April.
