TheDepartmentofPathologyfullysupportsthemissionandvaluesoftheSchulichSchoolofMedicine&DentistryofTheUniversityofWesternOntario,LondonHealthSciencesCentreandSt.Joseph’sHealthCareLondon.

Section 2 – Message from the Chair/Chief

IamprivilegedtopresenttheAnnualReportfortheDepartmentofPathologyattheUniversityofWesternOntario.Wehad

aremarkableyearinwhichtherewasachangeintheleadershipofourdepartment.Dr.BerthaGarcia,whosuccessfullyled

ourdepartmentforthelast12years,steppeddownasofJuly2011todevotefulltimetoherroleasVice-Dean,Education

atSchulich.Dr.GarciawasthedepartmentChairthroughchallengingtimesandherleadershipresultedinsignificant

growthofthePathologyDepartment.Hersignificantcontributionshaveprovidedastrongfoundationforourdepartmentas

wemoveforward.

Afewyearsagowesetstrategicgoalsinalongtermplanandwecontinuetofinetuneandfollowinthisdirection.AsI

startmyjourneyleadingthisgreatdepartment,Ihavenotedthatoverthelastyearourfaculty,staff,studentsandtrainees

haveworkedextremelyhardtomakesurethatwesuccessfullyachieveourgoalsinclinicalandacademicactivities.

Ourclinicalworkloadcontinuestobechallenginginvolumeandcomplexity.WeareintheprocessofintegratingthelaboratoryservicesoftheMiddlesex

HealthAlliancewiththoseofourdepartment.Recently,werestructuredseveralofouradministrativefunctionstoimprovetheefficiencyofthepathologyand

clinicallaboratories.Dr.C.M.McLachlinhasbeenappointedasMedicalDirectorofAnatomicalPathologyandDr.V.PrabhakaranasMedicalDirectorof

ClinicalLaboratories.Dr.McLachlinwilloverseeSurgicalPathology,Cytology,AutopsyPathologyandMolecularPathologyactivities.Dr.Prabhakaranwill

HelenEttlerhasbeenappointedasMedicalLeaderofSurgicalPathologyandDr.KeithKwanasSectionHeadofGrossandHistopathologylaboratories.

Workinginpartnershipwithotherexistingleaders,thisgreatteamwillmoveforwardtheacademicandclinicalmissionsofPathologyandLaboratory

Medicine.

Intheacademicarena,Dr.JackBendandDr.DavidDrimanhaveacceptedthepositionsofResearchDirectorandEducationDirector,respectively.Dr.

ChandanChakrabortyhasacceptedthepositionofChair,Research-basedGraduateProgram,andDr.NancyChanwillChairtheGraduateEducation

CommitteeforthePathologistAssistantProgram.BothourGraduateprogramsandResidencyprogramshavecontinuedtodemonstratestellar

performance.Departmentmemberscontinuetocontributealargevolumeofteachingtovariousundergraduate,graduateandpost-graduateprograms.

ThisyeartheDepartmentofPathologyalsobecamethehomefortheMotorVehicleSafety(MOVES)ResearchTeam.Thisuniquemultidisciplinaryteam

undertheleadershipofDr.MikeShkrumwillcarryoutcuttingedgeresearchinthisfield.Departmentalmembersauthoredasignificantnumberofresearch

publications,book-chaptersandabstracts.Theacademiccontributionsofdepartmentalfacultyhavebeenrecognizedwithvariousnationalandinternational

awardsincluding,appointmentsasFellowoftheCanadianAcademyofHealthSciences(Dr.JackBend)andFellowoftheRoyalSocietyofMedicine(Dr.

DavidWhite).Weareveryexcitedabouttheopportunityforgrowthinoureducation,practiceandresearchactivities.IntheNewYear,wewillberecruitinga

BasicScientist,aClinician-ScientistandanAnatomicPathologist.

Ibelievethatweareinanexcitingtime.OurPathologyDepartmentsharesthecommonvisionoftheUniversityofWesternOntario,theSchulichSchoolof

ThePathology&LaboratoryMedicineProgram(PALM),attheLondonHealthSciencesCentreandSt.Joseph’sHealthCareLondon,providesarangeof

routineandspecializedlaboratorytestingandclinicalconsultationtosupportthediagnosisandtreatmentofpatientswithinsouthwesternOntario,aswellas

nationallyandinternationally.

ThefollowingaresomehighlightsfromPALMforthepasttwelvemonths:

Laboratories on the Move

NinespecializedlaboratorieswererelocatedfromvariousLondonhospitalsitestothe10thfloor,Bwingtower,VictoriaHospitalattheendof2010.The

moveswerepartoftheMilestone2Phase2(M2P2)city-widehospitalrestructuringproject.Withthebestviewsinthecity,thisnew27,400sq.ft.space

isoccupiedbytheclinicalimmunology,moleculardiagnostics,molecularpathology,traceelements,toxicology&specialchemistry,microbiology/virology,

cytogenetics,endocrinology,andmaternalserumscreeninglaboratories.Consolidationhasbroughttogethertechnologists,scientists,andlaboratory

medicalstafftoshareideas,equipment,andresources;whichpromotesopportunitiestoimproveprocessusingLEANmethodologyandpromotes

enhancementstopatientcare.

Laboratory Information System

Thetransplantlaboratoryandinformationtechnologyserviceshavebeenworkingdiligentlytobringhumanleukocyteantigen(HLA)testingtotheCerner

clinicalinformationsystem.ThegolivedatewasMarch28,2011.HLAordersarenowavailableforon-lineorderingthroughPowerChartandclinicalstaff

withtheproperaccesspermissionswillbeabletoviewHLAresultsinPowerChart.

Immunohistochemistry Laboratory

TheimmunohistochemistrylaboratoryatUHhasundergonesignificantchangesin2010.ThelabacquiredthreenewDakoAutostainerLink48automated

immunohistochemicalstainersalongwith4PTLinkpretreatmentmodules.TheDakoAutostainerLink48stainersutilizeDako’smostrecentsoftwareand

connectivityoptionstoimproveworkloadmanagementwhilemaintainingoptimalstainingresults.ThePTLinkmodulesallowtheentirepre-treatment

processofdeparaffinization,rehydration,andantigenretrievaltobecombinedintoa3-in-1procedure.

New Voice Recognition System

AtUniversityHospital,avoicerecognitionsystemcalledDragonwasimplementedfor8pathologists’assistantsinthegrossroom.Priortothis

implementation,thepathologistassistantsdictatedgrossdescriptionsforsurgicalspecimensoncassettetapeswhichwerelatertranscribed.Thenew

systemnowdirectlycapturesdictationselectronicallywhichisthenreviewedinstantlybythepathologist’sassistant.Thisinformationiscopiedtothe‘gross

description’sectionoftheelectronicpathologyreport.Computersateachstation

provideimprovedaccesstoapplicationsrequiredbystaffduringthegross

examinationprocess.

Blood Transfusion Medicine Symposium

OnNovember6,2010,thebloodtransfusionlaboratorypresentedtheirannual

symposium.Thisyear’stopicwas“SpecialProductsforSpecialPatients”.The

keynoteaddresswasdeliveredbyDr.WendellRosse,ProfessorEmeritus,

DukeUniversityMedicalCentre.Dr.Rosseisrecognizedthroughouttheworld

forhisworkintransfusionmedicineandinparticularparoxysmalnocturnal

hemoglobinuria(PNH).Therewere100participantsinattendancefrom

throughoutsouthwesternOntario.ThesymposiumwassponsoredbyLLSG,

OrbconandCanadianBloodServices.

Ontario Laboratory Accreditation

Thehospital’slaboratorieswereassessedbyOntarioLaboratoryAccreditation(OLA)June20-24,2011.OLAisapeerreviewassessmentprocesswhich

ensuresthatlaboratoriesmeetexplicitqualitymanagementcriteria,inordertoprovideformalrecognitionthatthelaboratoryiscompetenttocarryout

examinations.AccreditationassessmentvisitsdetermineiflaboratoriesconformtotheOLArequirements,whicharebasedonISOstandards,Canadianand

provincialstatutes,regulationsandstandards,andHealthCanadaGuidelines.Thirteenassessorswereonsitetoevaluateeachof25laboratorysections.In

additionassessorsobservedbloodtransfusionpracticesandprocessesforpointofcare(bedside)testingsuchasglucose,urinalysisandfecaloccultblood.

Thelaboratoriesmet97%oftherequirementsasstatedandfouryearaccreditationcertificateswereissued.

DeputyChiefofPathology.AnewpositionnegotiatedaspartofthepackageforournewchairandpartiallyfundedthroughtheMOHLTC/OMAagreementfor

newlaboratorymedicinepositionsisbeingadvertisedinthefallof2011.Thisnewpositionisacombinedclinicalresearchpositionandwillhavesignificant

protectedtimefortheindividualhiredtosetupanindependentresearchprogram.

TheDepartmentofPathologyendeavorstoprovideabalancedapproachtoservice,education,quality,andresearch.Wehavecontinuedtorefineour

subspecialtyapproachforthesurgicalpathologyserviceswithdedicatedteamsofpathologistsprovidingfocusedexpertise.Therehavebeenrecent

increasesinvolumesforsometeams(egGIbiopsieshaveincreasedwithaddedfundingforendoscopyservices)andallteamsaredealingwithincreased

complexityintheirreportingrequirements.ThisisespeciallytruewithsynopticreportingmandatedbyCancerCareOntario.Wearecurrentlyintheprocess

committeefocusingonqualityininterpretivepathologyhasbeenreviewingandstandardizingourproceduresinordertooptimizediagnosticquality.Weare

currentlydevelopingourProfessionalQualityManagementprograminlinewiththerecentlyreleasedStandards2Qualityinitiative.

ThedivisionofSurgicalPathologyhasseveralchallengesandopportunitiestomeetinthecomingyears.Theincreasingcomplexityofsurgicalpathology

materialandthegreaterexpectationsforadditionaltestingwillrequireameasuredapproachtotheinclusionofmoleculartechniques.OurDepartment

alreadyhassufficientexpertise;howeverprovidingresourcesfornewtestingremainsachallenge.Additionalchallengeswillincluderegionalinitiatives,

increasingworkloadandexpandingsubspecialtyexpertise.

TheautopsyfacilityatLHSC-UHopenedin2000andwasdesignatedasaRegionalForensicPathologyUnitbytheOfficeofthe

ChiefCoronerin2001.Allautopsiesrequestedbyfamilies(“hospital-consent”)ofin-patientsinanyoftheLondonhospitalsare

doneintheUHfacility.AllcasesinvestigatedbylocalcoronersaresenttotheUHservice.Inaddition,complexcoroners’cases

(e.g.homicides,criminallysuspiciousdeaths,pediatricdeaths)fromsouthwesternOntarioarereferredtoLondon.Accesstonotonlypathologistshaving

varioussubspecialtyexpertisebutalsootherexperts(radiology,dentistry,anthropology)ensureshighqualityresults.Thepathologistsaresupportedby

excellentstaff.

In2010,therewere522autopsiesdoneatUH.Ofthese,379werecoroners’casesand143werehospital-consentcases.ReferralsfromoutsideLondon

accountedfor126(33%)ofthe379coroners’postmortems.Basedon2009statistics,13homicideswerereferred.

Theautopsyservicecontinuestoplayanactiveteachingrole.Inadditiontointradepartmentalrounds,interactiveroundswithotherclinicalservices

(cardiology,intensivecare,neonatalandpediatricservices)areongoingacademicactivities.ForensicmedicinecoursesareofferedtoUWOundergraduates

andmedicalstudents.TheautopsyserviceisanessentialcomponentoftheMScPathologists’AssistantprogramofferedbytheDepartmentofPathology.

TheCytologydivisionwithintheDepartmentofPathologyisrunbyateamconsistingoftheMedicalLeader(M.Joseph),

Coordinator(DonnaMurphy),9cytotechnologists,1.5labassistantsand12pathologistsofwhich4arecytopathologists.We

provideawiderangeofdiagnosticservicestoourphysiciansanddeliverexpertcytologyconsultationservicetoourregional

pathologists.

Lastyearweprocessed27,468samplesinthecytologylab(19,004gyn-cytology,8464non-gyncytology,ofwhich1938werefineneedleaspirationbiopsies

(FNABs).Therecentlyintroduced,stateoftheart,HologicThinPrepT5000processorhascertainlyimprovedtheefficiencyofcytopreparationinour

lab.OurcytotechnologistscontinuetoprovidetheFNABadequacyservicetoourclinicians(840caseslastyear)atallthreehospitalsitesandourclient

physicians’surveyhighlightstheremarkablebenefitofthisserviceforpatientcare.

OurcytologyteamworkedwithourLHSCphysiciansandestablishedprotocolsfortworecentlyintroducedtechnicallychallengingproceduresEUS-FNAand

EBUS-FNAandthesehavelargelyassistedgastroenterologyandrespirology/thoracicpatients.OurlabsuccessfullycompletedtheOLAaccreditationvisit

thankstoDonnaMurphyandherteamfortheirhardworkandcommitment.

roundshavebeenredesignedtoimprovecommunicationandinteraction.OurteammembersareactivelyinvolvedintheongoingteachingofPathology

residentsandwearecurrentlydevelopingacurriculumforanexcitingCytologyFellowshipProgram.Equallyimportanttonoteisthatseveralofour

cytotechnologistsareClinicalEducatorswiththeMichenerInstituteofHealthSciences.

WerunarobustQualityManagementPrograminourcytologydivisionundertheleadershipofDr.M.Weir.OurteamisproudofourongoingQAandQC

programswithmanyprojectspresentedatnationalmeetings.Wearepleasedtostatethatphysiciansfromourcytologyteamparticipateontheexecutive

boardoftheCanadianSocietyofCytology,CanadianCoalitionforthePreventionofCervicalCanceraswellasintheScientificCommitteeoftheQuality

ManagementProgramandLicensingServiceofOntarioBranchoftheOntarioMedicalAssociation.

Cytologyisanevolvingscience.ThefutureofCytologyliesintheintroductionofnewertechnologiesandmoleculartesting.Thereareopportunitiesto

buildoncurrentareasofstrengthandexpertise.Thecollaborationandinteractionbetweencytopathologistsandsurgicalpathologistsmustincreaseinthe

researchfield.Aninventoryofcytologyresearchneedstobecreatedandmaintained,inordertoidentifywhereexpertiselays,wherecollaborationscanbe

encouraged,andwheregapsexist.

Challengeliespartlyinshortageofresources.IncreasingdemandsforFNABadequacyservicebyphysiciansatVictoriahospitalischallenging.Currently

weareworkingwithcliniciansatVictoriahospitalwhoutilizethisservicetostreamlinetheprocessusingcreativestrategies.WebelievetheLaboratory’s

successislinkedtoitsinterdisciplinaryteamapproach.Inordertosucceed,cooperationandcollaborationarerequiredamongallkeystakeholders.

Thebiochemicalgeneticslaboratoryprovidestestingforawiderangeofinheritedmetabolicdisordersaswellastherapeutic

RTSThemoleculargenetics/diagnostics(oneof8intheprovince)andmolecularpathologylaboratoriesperformawidevarietyofgenetestingmethodologiesfor

inheriteddisorders,mitochondrialdisorders,predictivecancertesting,somaticdiseases(suchasleukemiaandlymphoma)andtherapeuticmonitoring(for

leukemia).Theyserveasreferencelaboratoriesforsometests.SectionHeads:Dr.P.Ainsworth(Genetics/Diagnostics),Dr.C.Howlett(Pathology).

Testvolumescontinuetoincreaseeachyear(10-20%onaverage)andtestcomplexitiescontinuetoincreasesignificantlyeachyear.Themajorityof

molecularteststhatweperformaremovingtowardscompletegenesequencingplatforms.Increasesintestvolumehavebeengreatestincancertesting

(withmorethan50%oftheworkloadassociatedwiththeCancerGeneticsProgram)butprovincialnewbornscreeningandnewbreastcancerscreening

regimentscontinuetoincreasetestvolumesinBiochemicalGeneticsandMolecularGenetics.

Thenumbersofdiseasesthatcanbe/shouldbetestedattheDNAandRNAlevelareincreasingandthetestingplatformsarechangingrapidly.Our

challengeistofindresourcestokeeppacewiththemedicalandscientificadvancementsandtoexpandourcapabilitiestobetterserveourpatient

population.

Duringthepastyear,thecytogenetics,moleculargenetics/diagnosticsandmolecularpathologysectionsofourgrouphavemovedtoanewcontiguous

laboratoryfacilityatVictoriaHospitalandintegrationofthemolecularunitsisnowinprogress.Wehavealsosecuredresourcestointroducemicroarray

testing(whichscreensthousandsofchromosomalloci)forhighresolutiondetectionofchromosomalrearrangementsininheritedandacquireddiseases.

Wehopetorecruitafull-timedoctorallevelspecialistinmoleculargeneticsandcytogeneticstokeeppacewiththeincreasedtestvolumeandtest

complexity,andimproveprofessionalcoverageforthesesubspecialties.

Inadditiontoclinicallaboratorytesting,theMolecularPathologyGroupcontinuestoplayanactiveandvitalroleinteachingofundergraduatestudents,

graduatestudents,medicallabtechnologystudents,residentsandfellowsatLHSCandUWO.

Fortheyear2010-2011,themembersoftheDivisionofOralPathologycontinuedtorespondtoincreasingdemandsinallareas

ofresponsibility.Thedemandfordiagnosticsandpatientcarecontinuestogrow.Tissuesfromdentistsanddentalspecialists

arereceivedfromacrossOntario,andconsultsarereceivedfrombothmedicalandoralpathologycolleaguesacrossOntario

andCanada.

Teachingdemandsalsocontinuetobehigh.Finetuningofthethreenewcoursesdevelopedforthenewdental

curriculumisinprocessaswelearnfrommistakesinpreviousyears.Thenewthirdyearcoursewillbegiven

forthefirsttimein2011-2012.Thereisconsiderablymoreadministrativeworkinvolvedwiththesecourses.

Researchcontinuestoprogress.Topicsincludetheinfluenceofhumankallikreinsinsalivaryglandneogenesis

andincystogenesisandneogenesisofodontogeniclesions.Researchonperiostin’sinvolvementin

odontogenicandfibro-osseouslesionsisalsobeingdone.Wenowhavefourgraduatestudentsandafifth

comingonboard.Twooftheseniorstudentsareinthewrite-upphase,whiletheothertwoaredoingactive

researchatthispoint.

togetheroftheVirologylab,whichwassituatedatSJHC,andtheotherMicrobiologylabsintoonelocation.Thereisalsoashared

labfacilitywithmolecularpathologyandmoleculardiagnosticswhereweareabletoconsolidateourPCRdiagnosticmenu.This

movehasbeenmuchanticipatedandmuchappreciatedasourlabfacilitiesarenowspacious,modern,wellequippedandsomethingtobeproudof.

Amajorhospitalinitiativethisyearhasbeentoaddresstheissuesofpatientsafetyandpatientaccess.Infectioncontrolhasbeenanareaofgrowthinthis

regardandthelabsupportoftheinfectioncontrolprogramhasbenefittedbyacquiringnewtechnologies.Anewdiagnosticmethodforthediagnosisof

C.difficileisbeingintroduced.WewillalsobemovingtoidentifyingorganismsmorerapidlyusingtheMALDI-TOFFtechnology.Otherequipmentwillhelpus

streamlineourPCRwork.

DrZ.Hussainwillberetiringattheendofthisyear.Hewillbesorelymissedashehasbeenthemainstayofclinicalsupportfortheroutinediagnostic

microbiologylabaswellastheresidencyprogram.Wewishhimwellinhisretirement.Recruitmentisunderwayforareplacementandtheremaybe

opportunitiesforadditionalpositionsinmedicalmicrobiologytoprovidesufficientpersonnelfortheworkload.

NeurosurgicalCases:wereceivein-housecasesfrom11neurosurgeonsandreferredcasesfromWindsor,Sudbury,Sarnia,Strathroy,Stratford,

Woodstock,Hamilton,Newfoundland,SaudiArabiaandSingapore.IntraoperativeconsultationsforadultCNStumourswereregularlyperformedat

Therewere12residentsinAnatomicalPathology(AP)in2010-11,andnoneinGeneralPathology.Theresidents(PGY2-5)are

primarilylocatedatonesite,theUniversityHospitalDepartmentofPathology,andonlygooff-siteforFrozenSectioncoverage

ortoattendacademiceventsorrounds.TheyhavethebenefitoftheRegionalForensicUnitalsobeingon-site,aswellasa

parallelNeuropathologyProgram,sothereismuchbeneficialsharingoffacilitiesandeducationalinteraction,aswellasthe

formalrotationsofferedintheseareas.

27full-timefacultyanatomicalpathologistsparticipatedinteachingandmentoringourresidents.Allpathologistscovertwoormoresubspecialtyareas,as

membersofsubspecialtyteams.Onanygivenday,mostpathologistsareonsiteandinteractwithoneanotherinthehandlingofserviceandconsultwork.

Thisresultsinacomprehensiveandcohesivelearningexperiencefortheresidents,withbroadpracticalexposureandopportunityforrole-modeling.In

additiontopathologyresidents,therewasasteadystreamofoff-serviceresidentsandmedicalstudentsdoingelectives,aswellasobservers,suchthatthe

workingspaceintheresidents’roomswasalmostalwaysfilledtotheseams.

Thereweremanyeducationalrounds,includingdailyGrossRoomrounds,weeklyForensicandSurgicalPathologyrounds,atleastfortnightlySubspecialty

Microscopyrounds,monthlyJournalClub,GrandRoundsandICUrounds,aswellasmanyon-siteandoff-siteInterdisciplinaryroundsandTumourBoards.

TheMedicalMicrobiologyProgramisoneofthesmallerprogramsatWesternandusuallyhasonlyoneortwopostgraduatesatanygiventime.Theprogram

offersabroad-basedexperienceinlaboratoryandclinicalareas;thefiveyeartrainingincludesmandatoryandelectiverotations.Theprogramworksvery

closelywiththedivisionsofadultandpaediatricinfectiousdiseases.InfectiousDiseasesconsultantsparticipateactivelyinstructuringandsupervisionof

residenttraining.Monthlyrounds,journalclubarejointlyheld.ParticipationofIDconsultantsinacademichalfdaysofMedicalMicrobiologyisvaluable.

Theresidencycommitteestronglybelievesthatagoodfoundationinclinicalmedicine,especiallyininfectiousdiseasesisthebestfoundationforaMedical

Microbiologist.

Theprogramencouragesresearchandmostofourresidentshavehadseveralpublicationsinpeer-reviewednationalandinternationaljournalsandmade

presentationsatnationalandinternationalmeetings.Historically,graduatesofourprogramhavebeensuccessfulattheCanadiancertificationexamination

oftheRoyalCollegeofPhysiciansandSurgeons.Theyalsohavefounddiverseandrewardingcareers.

TheseareveryexcitingandchallengingtimesforMedicalMicrobiologyandInfectionControl.Newandemerginginfectiousagentsarebeingdiscovered,

diagnosticmethodologyischangingrapidly.OverthepastyearsMedicalMicrobiologistshavebeenattheforefrontinthefightagainstSARS,Avianand

needfortomorrow’sscientistsandtotrainclinician-researchers,anunder-resourcedprofessioninCanada,wehaveinitiatedasuccessfulpart-timeresearch

Graduate Student Enrollment

Inthepastseveralyearswehaveexperiencedanunparalleledgrowthinourpathologygraduateeducationprogram.Fromatotalof14M.Sc.and6Ph.D.

studentsinSeptemberof2005,enrollmenthasincreasedto36M.Sc.and11Ph.D.studentsinSeptemberof2010See[Table1].Thisisduetoseveral

reasonssuchasanincreasedintakeofgraduatestudentsbyourexistingfaculty,andtheinitiationof:a)aparttimegraduateprogram;b)theecosystem

healthgraduateprogram;c)anoralandmaxillofacialsurgeryprogram;andd)thePAtrainingprogram.OurachievementsfulfillthemandateofUWOto

increasegraduatestudentenrollment.Ourfacultymembersareverysuccessfulinrecruitinghighqualityresearchstudentsintotheirresearchlaboratories.

PA Program Graduates – Career Opportunities

Thereisagreatandwell-documentedneedforwell-trainedPAsinCanada.Thereareabout225communitylabsinOntarioand

thevastmajorityofthemdonothaveaPA,largelyduetodemandexceedingsupplies.WeexpectthatifwelltrainedPAsare

available,eachoftheselabswillhireatleastone.Thelargercenterspotentiallywillrecruitmorethanone.Althoughtheacademic

centersinOntariohavePAs,suitablytrainedPA’sareinveryshort-supply.

Additionalpossibilitiesforemploymentexistinotherprovincesaswellasintheforensiccenters.Itisalsoexpectedthatoverthenextseveralyearsthisneed

willcontinuetoincreasebecauseofthesevereshortageofpracticingpathologistsandpathologists-in-training,requiredtomeetescalatingclinicaldemands.

Graduatingtraineesin2010-2011includeonestudentwhowillworkasapathologist’sassistantinLethbridge,Alberta;onestudentwillworkasa

ofdiseaseandtogivethestudentsomeofthebasicdescriptivevocabularyofdiseaseprocessesandobtainanunderstandingofdiseaseprocessesand

theirunderlyingmolecularmechanisms.Pathology3240Aintroducesstudentstodiseaseprocessessuchasinjury,inflammation,immunity,infectionand

neoplasiathatarecommontomanyorgansystems(i.e.generalpathology).

Inouradvancedcoursesinthe4thyearweofferamoreindepthstudyoftwoareasofcurrentinterestinpathology–environmentalpathologyandforensic

pathology.Thesecoursesreflectnotonlytheinterestandimportanceoftheseareaswithinpathologybutalsoreflectinterestsandareasofstrengthin

researchamongourfacultymembers.

Theobjectiveofthe4thyearseniorresearchprojectistointroducethestudenttothestudyofpathologywithinabasicscienceorclinicalpathologyresearch

laboratoryundertheguidanceofapathologyfacultymember.Themajorityofthesupervisorsof4thyearstudentsarealsomembersofthegraduatefaculty

inPathology.Additionallyseveralopportunitiesareofferedforclinicallybasedresearch.

Meds III – Clinical Clerkship Pathology Electives (Co-ordinators Dr. H. Ettler, Dr. A. Haig and Dr. K. Kwan)

Duringthe2weeks,theclerkwill,underthedirectsupervisionofapathologistorpathologyresident,participateintheexaminationandinterpretationof

biopsiesfromvariousbodysites.Theclerkwillalsohavetheopportunitytoparticipateinthegrossexaminationofsurgicalspecimenspertinenttothe

practiceofmedicine,forexample:colectomiesfromulceratedcolitis,thyroidectomiesforthyroidcancer,etc.Theclerkswillhavetheopportunitytofollow-

uponsomeoftheseresectionsbyreviewingtheirmicroscopicfindingsthefollowingday.Theywillalsobeencouragedtoparticipateintheexamination

andclinicalscienceresearch,andtoimprovecommunicationwithinthedepartmentandbetweendepartmentalmembersandotherresearchersinthecity.It

isanimportantforumforresearchstaffandfacultytopresenttheirwork,getfeedbackontheirresearchfromthewholegroup,andstimulatenewideasand

Challenges Ahead

Pathologyhascontinuedtomakeexcellentprogressinresearchduringthelastyear,howeverthisgrowthofresearchpotentialislimitedbytheshortageof

highqualitywetlaboratoryresearchspaceandadequatespaceforcorefacilities.Asindicatedbefore,thesearetrulysuccessstories.However,thereare

risksinvolvedwhenthenewrecruitsfindthemselvestryingtooperateinsubstandardfacilitiesandinadequateresearchspace.Anotherchallengeforall

investigatorsisthedecreaseinavailableresearchfunds(duetodifficulteconomictimes)thatalsoimpactnegativelyonourresearchendeavors.
