WORKSHOPS:
Introduction to Power System software:
The Workshop on “Introduction to Power System software” was organized by the
Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering for the final and prefinal year students
of EEE department on the 4th and 5th of September 2018 in F01. The session on the 4th of
September started with a small inaugural function that comprised of welcoming the guest
speakers for the day and our HoD honouring them. Mr. Selvakumar, Lead Engineer, ABB,
and Mr. Gopinath, Graduate Engineer Trainee, Power projects, were the speakers for the day.
Mr. Selvakumar gave a lecture on ETAP software and all the studies that could be done with
ETAP. Mr. Gopinath discussed the digisilent power factory software and insulation
coordination. After every lecture, there was the hands-on training in both the software. The
hands-on training included the short circuit study and the load flow study using ETAP
software and the digisilent power factory and PSCAD software. The speakers for the second
day were Mr. Guruprakash, Power Systems Engineer, Power Projects and Mr. Hariharan,
Power Systems Engineer, Power Projects. The software that were discussed on 05-09-2018
are PVSYST and PVSOL for designing PV Solar plants and HOMER, a Microgrid design
software. The lectures were given by the resource persons after which students had the hands-
on training of these software. At the end of the 2nd day, a valedictory function was held
which comprised of providing certificates to the students who attended the workshop. The
guest speakers chose 2 students - Jovin Tony and Abishek Joel from the final year of EEE
and provided them gifts for their active involvement in the workshop.
The workshop gave the students an insight on a few software that were available and sought
after by power system-based companies. The guest speakers gave so many case studies as to
why learning about the power system software was important. They explained the basic
concept of every software and helped the students with the hands-on training. They took their
time and explained everyone's doubts clearly so that students could understand everything in
a better way. By the end of the day, they made sure that the students knew how to do all the
basic studies with the software.
The students were happy with the workshop. They liked the way the speakers handled the
section and the calmness with which they cleared everyone’s doubts. The only thing that the
students insisted was that the workshop might have been extended for two more days with
one software for a day so that they could have learned almost everything about the software.
But they were very happy as this workshop remained as an eye opener for them to know
about the various opportunities available and the various software and developments that they
have to learn and update themselves. Overall, students were thankful for having the
introduction to various software that were available in the market.

SPORTS SECTION
NATIONAL TAEKWONDO PROFESSIONAL
Very often people tend to get confused with the difference between Taekwondo and
Karate. Taekwondo is an Olympic sport which originated in South Korea. It is a means of
self - defense without the use of weapons. I was introduced to Taekwondo at the age of
nine and have been a part of it ever since. The initial reason why I joined Taekwondo was
so that I could win the fights against my sisters at home. Only later did I realize that all
martial arts are used as a means of self defense alone.
Taekwondo develops self- confidence, discipline and improves concentration as well. It
helps to cultivate the virtues of modesty, self-control, perseverance and an indomitable
spirit in individuals. Taekwondo also helps to strengthen the mind and body. In the
beginning, I used to go for classes just for the fun of it, but as the years went by, my love
for the sport gradually increased. Over the years I have taken part and won medals in
various competitions at district, state and national levels. Last year, I represented Anna
University at the All India Inter University Championship held at Amritsar. I could not
win a national medal last year but I aspire to do so this year. I participated in the 31stState
Senior Taekwondo Championship held at Pudukkottai this year and won a bronze medal.
Taekwondo is an endless learning experience that helps to keep one alert and on guard at all
times. In our present-day society, it is the need of the hour for all of us to remain vigilant as
we never know what lies ahead of us.

CONQUERING BOUNDARIES
In India, cricket is a very popular game which attracts all kind of people irrespective of their
age or gender. My father was also one
among them, who used to keenly follow
every game played by the Indian cricket
team. My school had a good cricket
academy which professionally trained
the students to excel in the sport, so my
father encouraged me to join the
academy. Initially I struggled to make a
mark in the team. Being a left-handed
player is a big advantage in this sport, I
made use of this edge and honed my
skills with regular practice and I began to
see a gradual improvement in my
performance. In the beginning, I was a
left arm spinner and also a handy left-
handed batsman, representing my school
team at various tournaments. Playing at
the junior (CSK) inter school tournament
was a rewarding experience. Being a tall and lanky fellow, my coach encouraged me to shift
from a spinner to a Pace bowler. I was fascinated by the young Australian fast bowler
Mitchell Starc who is known for his death-defying Yorkers. I idolized him and followed his
techniques, trying to implement them in my bowling. I participated in school games
federation of India (SGFI) selection. Hundreds of young aspiring cricketers competed against
each other to get selected and represent our state (SGFI)cricket team at the national level. I
had to work really hard to get through the various selection trials. Eventually I got selected to
play for the state (SGFI) U-17 team. The state matches were conducted at Madhya Pradesh
which gave me an exposure to new level of cricket. After completing my higher secondary
education I got into LICET through sports quota. Being a fast bowler is an arduous task and
the path to success is not a bed of roses. So, I moulded myself into a” Chinamen”
(unorthodox left arm spinner) which is a very difficult art to master and you can’t find many
Chinamen in this sport. The college team is very supportive and I practice with them, trying
to develop my cricketing skills. Apart from college cricket, I also play league cricket which is
organised by Tamil Nadu cricket association.
No dream is bigger; no sky higher for us to conquer and I believe that one day I can make my
mark, wearing the blue jersey and playing for our country. -NISHANTH V, II EEE

During year 2013 as it was a beginning year of tournaments for her, she found it to be
difficult to cope with playing standards of quality and experience tournament players, she
was able to expel at the state level and she won few of them but found it very difficult to
migrate to the AITA tournaments. Year 2015 is a good break thru year for Devaki in terms of
tennis and she started up with good wins in state level tournament conducted TTT, where she
hit Quarter finals and Semi-finals in singles events and doubles events. Which was a good
start and she was mentally prepared to face All India Tournament, as school also backed he
up she was really ready for the fresh year with a big bang. This year saw Devaki progressing
very well and was runner up in 2 tournaments conducted by All India Tennis Association and
may events she had good progress on to Quarter and Semi-final stages. This progress was on
both 16 and 18 categories as well as in women category.
Currently Devaki is ranked in 200 + in All India Tennis Association (AITA) in both Under 18 category. At the
state level she is ranked in side top 10 in Under 18 categories.
