UNDERSTANDING YOUR OFFER OF ADMISSION

Exemptions

Exemptions have no credit value and are given if the studentearned 75% or higher in certain CEGEPs. If you have beenawarded an exemption for an Economics course, do NOT takethe course again at Concordia. You will need to replace thatcourse with another Economics course.

Math & Econ ExemptionsEcon 201, 203

If you have exemptions for Econ

201 and Econ 203 you need to

replace them with an Econ

course at any level. Example

Econ 200 – Economics & Issues

Math 203, 206 and 209

If you wish to retake Math 209,

you will need to complete a

student request acknowledging

you will not retain credits for the

course.

If you have an exemption for

Math 206 we recommend that you

enrol in Math 209 in your first

semester.

Potential ExemptionsTo update your potential exemptions contact your Admissions Officer. This

person’s name and contact information is on your letter. If you do not meet the

minimum grade cut-off for exemption, your potential exemption will be

REMOVED.

If you have been given a potential exemption but you know that you will not meet

the 75% cut-off, sign the Potential Exemption Waiver form. Otherwise, you

cannot register for the class until the potential exemption is removed

Deficiencies and Transfer Credits

Economics CurriculumDegree Program in Economics:A Bachelor of Arts degree takes a minimum of three or four years (90 – 120 credits)

of full-time study, depending on your academic background.

Options:

Honours in Economics (60 credits)

Specialization in Economics (60 credits)

Major in Economics (42 credits)

BA DEGREE PROGRAMS IN ECONOMICS

Math Prerequisites

Econ 221, 222 have Math prerequisites.

Econ 221: Prerequisite; Math 201 or Math 206.

Math A: Equivalent to Math 436, too low of a level for Econ

Math 201 Exemption: Passed Math 536, scored less than 70%

Math 201 and 206 Exemptions: Math 536 scored above or equal to 70%

If you do not have any math exemption or just Math A, register for Math

206 in the upcoming semester.

Econ 222: Prerequisites; Econ 221 and Math 203 or Math 209.

Math 203 Exemption: Passed Calculus I, grade below 75%

Math 203 and 209 Exemptions: Calculus I, grade 75% or higher

If you do not have Math 203 or Math 209 exempted, register for Math 209 in the upcoming

semester.

If you want to take Math 209 even though you have the Math 203 and/or Math 209

exemption(s) fill out the Student Request form, indicating that you are aware you will not

earn credits for the course and neither will the grade of the course count in your cumulative

GPA. The grade, however, will count in your current annual GPA.

Statistics course equivalences

Different Departments require their students to take statistics

courses.

Examples:

Econ 221 = Stat 249 = Psyc 315 = Geog 362 = Biol 322, etc.

Econ 222 = Stat 250 = Psyc 316, etc.

For the Department of Economics: Econ 221 = Comm 215

For JMSB: Econ 221+222 = Comm 215

You can earn MAX = 6 such statistics credits. For econ majors,

we strongly suggest you take Econ 221, 222.

When in doubt speak with an Economics Academic Adviser!

Degree Requirements

Refer to Section 31.003 in the Concordia University Calendar.

For example, CEGEP students in 90-credit program:

Econ major = min 42 credits

Non-econ courses = min 24 credits

Subtotal = 66 credits

The remaining 90-66 = 24 credits can be anything. You can add a

second major (42 credits) or a minor (24-30 credits).

General Education Requirement

Concordia requires students to take at least 24 credits outside of their major, of

which six (6) of the 24 credits have to be outside of their area/field.

Example: Economics is a social science.

For Econ students, six (6) of the 24 credits have to be outside of social

science (such as science, humanities, fine arts, business, etc.)

Concordia assesses all students every April/May if the student has completed at

least 12 credits in the previous 12 months.

Grade Point Average (GPA):

Three outcomes:

Good standing: GPA ≥2.0

Conditional standing: 1.5 ≤ GPA < 2.0

Failed standing: 0 ≤ GPA < 1.5

Consequences

Good standing: Business as usual.

Conditional standing: Blocked account, view an appropriate

video. In the subsequent year, students will be re-assessed. If

GPA<2.0 again, have to withdraw from Concordia.

Failed standing: Withdraw from Concordia, may have to stay out

for one year, can apply for readmission for September. If re-

admitted, students will be reassessed in the subsequent year. If

GPA<2.0 again, stay out of Concordia for three (3) years.

Next Steps

Register for course on or after your enrolment appointment date

Register for the fall and winter terms

Get your student ID at the Birks Student Services Center at least 48

hours after enrolling in courses

Bookmark the Academic Dates and Deadlines page and pay

attention to the DNE and DISC deadlines;

DNE (Did Not Enter) withdrawal has no academic or financial impact on the student.

DISC (Discontinued) withdrawal has both academic and financial impact on the

student.
