some excerpts relating to broadcast radio and the music industry. Broadcast Radio: Dickey is optimistic about radio largely because it still owns the means of distribution and its content. Further, radio’s value proposition remains strong and he expects it to maintain a dominant in-car advantage “well into the next decade.” “[Radio] remains strong as a free, convenient, entertaining, informative and local companion in the car,” he writes. “Radio has protected distribution, limited broadcast competition through the FCC and enjoys the lowest content rights fees in the music business. Radio’s content and distribution both have comparative strengths against most other media models.” That’s not to say radio’s challenges aren’t formidable, however. Dickey expects ad pricing to continue to erode, making the development of other revenue streams crucial. “Radio needs to expand its vision of the customer relationship, which it owns as the last mile distributor,” he argues, a suggestion harkening back to the development of Cumulus’ Nash brand when he was still CEO. “Radio has a unique relationship and loyal bond with listeners, which can be leveraged into an expanded business model including subscription-based audio on demand, live streaming, audio and video, live and recorded entertainment, themed events and digital commerce.” Viability is there, Dickey says, “but the business model has to evolve to create more advertising and sponsorship opportunities as well as a share of the listener’s entertainment dollar.” Music: Dickey sees even more disruption within the music industry. “Labels controlled their distribution when it was sold as a physical medium, but controlling digital distribution has been elusive and the free services have trained a generation of millennials that they don’t have to pay for music,” he writes. “Labels need to systematically attack both issues to preserve the viability of their industry or it will be increasingly difficult to show growth even though demand for their product is strong. Ultimately, the profitability of the industry will depend upon the size of the addressable market of consumers who believe in the intrinsic value of music content and are willing to foot the bill for a $100 annual music subscription.” This new landscape will give rise to other headaches as well, he argues. “The labels’ next existential threat will come from the most bankable artists and their management companies who have the newfound leverage to potentially circumvent the labels by going directly to radio, streaming services, SiriusXM and digital music stores, as well as continuing to deal directly with

concert promoters,” Dickey explains. “Recorded music was the first entertainment medium to be disrupted by digital distribution and the threat continues almost two decades later as artists and managers aggressively work to capture greater value for the art in the face of declining revenues while their popularity as well as the consumption of their music is on the rise.” Dickey grants that subscription services are “growing nicely,” but points out that they collectively represent less than 15% of industry revenue. “On its present path, the music industry is slowly transitioning into primarily an ad-supported model with revenue growth relying on increasing the number of ad impressions in a market already burdened with oversupply.” he summarizes. Internet Radio: Dickey argues that the challenges ahead for internet radio businesses are many. “Consumers have not yet embraced subscription-based music streaming as they’ve done with video because they’ve been conditioned that premium music content is available on demand for free with inserted ads,” he says. “This naturally limits the addressable market for paid subscribers and negatively impacts the perceived value of the subscription offering.” And there’s more. “Largely unprofitable, internet radio companies are beginning to face growing challenges because they are low margin, ad-based digital distribution businesses that sell an undifferentiated product with low barriers to entry.” Dickey continues. “It’s an inviting target for key strategic competitors like Apple, Google and Amazon to aggressively compete for users in both on-demand and playlist services. Internet radio will also face increasing competition in spoken-word content broadcasters looking to create new revenue streams as well as SiriusXM as they likely expand their digital product offerings as the transition occurs over time to the connected car.” The New Modern Media is published by a division of the Dickey family’s Modern Luxury publishing group and is available in Kindle and hardcover editions here. –Russ Penuell

Chart Chat Congrats to Thomas Rhett, George Briner, Ashley Sidoti and the entire Valory promotion team on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “Star Of The Show.” The song is the fourth chart-topper from Rhett’s current album Tangled Up. And kudos to Katie Dean and the MCA crew for landing 106 adds with Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road,” which tops this week’s board.

UPDATE

Eagle Rock's Mark Collie discusses his most influential music:1. Ray Charles, Modern Sounds In Country & Western Music: I felt like I got to know Ray Charles. But he also was introducing me to some great songwriters, like Hank Williams and Cindy Walker. 2. Johnny Cash At San Quentin: I was a young kid trying to play the guitar and looking for a musical hero – and he was mine. 3. Kris Kristofferson, Jesus Was A

Capricorn: There was a guy who could write songs. A lot of people thought he couldn't sing. A lot of people thought I couldn't sing – and still do. (laughs)4. Bobby Bare, Lullabys, Legends And Lies: Every song on that record is great. Every songwriter should allow themselves to hear Shel Silverstein's "Sure Hit Songwriter's Pen." It's brilliantly clever, satirical and brutally honest.5. Waylon Jennings, Honky Tonk Heroes: That introduced me to Billy Joe Shaver and I didn't even know it.• Highly regarded music you've actually never heard: Shawn Mendes. I've heard a little bit of his work, but I guess I need to listen more to him. • An "important" piece or style of music you just don't get: People who make music in any genre don't do it just because they can. They need to. It's part of who they are. So, who am I do try to judge that?• An album you listened to incessantly: Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger. In high school I got a job at my hometown radio station WAAN-AM/Waynesboro, TN as a part-time DJ on the weekend. They had all these great albums I could listen to. I remember when they sent us this record. That changed my thinking. I was trying to write songs, and I fell in love with the conceptual way Willie wrote.• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: The Boxmasters, featuring Billy Bob Thornton, have a song called "What Did You To Today?" It has a great message.• Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: I don't hate to admit it, but a lot of people may not know I love to listen to Frank Sinatra.

not to mention Altitude TV, the Outdoor Channel and [some of] Arsenal Football Club in London, so it’s a big company with great resources. That said, its businesses are all run differently. And since this is their first radio venture, they’ve been as open to learning our ways of dong things as we’ve been to theirs. The general attitude has been, “Okay, tell us about radio and what you need.” And as long as we can tell them why we need it, they’ve gotten it for us. One big difference is that there aren’t these big VPs over us telling us how to do things according to some company blueprint, which leaves a lot of room for creativity. How important are the company’s sports properties to the stations? Owning the sports franchises in town is very helpful. The Nuggets, for example, are very appealing from date-night and family-night perspectives. I mean you’ve got LeBron James, the Lakers and Golden State coming to town and those are big deals. So we use those opportunities across the board. They provide sports tickets locally for contesting and promotions, but it’s not like they’re just sitting there all the time for us to use. You’ve been in Denver for more than four years now. What’s the market like for radio? Very competitive, very compressed. There is some heritage, but it’s really become a melting pot and is similar to Vegas in its monster-growth days. There are tons of companies coming here and home values have skyrocketed, a lot of which has to do with tech and oil. And the marijuana industry has brought in a lot of people and companies. One thing I tell my jocks is that they can’t rest on their laurels or on the way they did things years ago. They can’t be afraid to tell their story because there are a lot of people who are brand new to the market. I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with callers off the air who say they just moved here. To me that means there is a lot of new cume to capture and we just need to get a meter on them. Your direct competitor, KYGO, is obviously a well-known and successful heritage Country station. How do you see KWOF in relation to it? They’re our direct competitor and have been the heritage here for a long time, but we feel we are the “new Country” station that’s after the 18-34 crowd. That’s apparent when we do concerts and club nights. So when we create promotions and contests it’s all about concert tickets and meet-and-greets. We’ve

got to get them backstage and give listeners something they can’t get on their own. Our No. 1 goal is to satisfy that niche in the market. We’re very focused on new music, which we’re clear about in our “New Country” slogan. Overall we’re just going to be a lot hipper and more aggressive. What does that mean for the airstaff? We’re doing new, fun things, and that’s a focus I try to bring to the morning show. Life is so hard and the news is so depressing. You’ll drive yourself crazy with that. So we’re focused on being the listeners’ release and smile. And I’ve got a great staff around me who have bought in to that vision. Everybody rolls up their sleeves and puts their hands in. We’re entertainers, not just jocks. And when we go out in public, we’ve got to have an idea. We’ve got to do some great video for social tie-ins for the event we’re doing, for example. Not just enter-to-win boxes – no way. We want to have some fun with people and we want to engage with them. Other PDs may put chokers on, but I’ve never been like that. The biggest names in radio had the work ethic and vision to do things differently. They didn’t go in and read lines, so we’re not going to do that. Do you see KWOF’s smaller signal as a vulnerability? A lot of people have used that in the past, but I don’t. And KYGO has some signal issues, too. They’re just more minimal than ours. In theory we need get a little more strength in the south and we’re aware of it. But that’s out my control, you know? There’s plenty of territory they cover and there’s plenty of territory that I cover. So at the end of the day it’s mano a mano. I don’t have excuses. You gave me a challenge and I’m going to win in my own way. You can’t worry about what you can’t control. Your introduction to Nashville must be a new experience. How’s that going? Well they’re all my best friends right now! I have hundreds of emails I’m still catching up with. For me it’s just about getting to know everyone first and that’s what I’ve told them – just give me a clean start. I’m a good partner, I shoot straight and we’re going to have open dialogue. I just haven’t been able to catch up with everyone yet. I hope to fix that if I get out to CRS. I’m a handshake and look-you-in-the-eye type of guy, so I’m looking forward to that. Welcome Jaxon to the club here. –Russ Penuell
