Summary The National Citizen Survey™ (The NCS™) is a collaborative effort between National Research Center, Inc. (NRC) and the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). The survey and its administration are standardized to assure high quality research methods and directly comparable results across The NCS communities. This report discusses differences in opinion of survey respondents by annual household income, race, age and sex.

Responses in the following tables show only the proportion of respondents giving a certain answer; for example, the percent of respondents who rated the quality of life as “excellent” or “good,” or the percent of respondents who attended a public meeting more than once a month. ANOVA and chi-square tests of significance were applied to these comparisons of survey questions. A “p-value” of 0.05 or less indicates that there is less than a 5% probability that differences observed between subgroups are due to chance; or in other words, a greater than 95% probability that the differences observed are “real.” Where differences were statistically significant, they have been shaded grey.

The margin of error for this report is generally no greater than plus or minus three percentage points around any given percent reported for the entire sample (828 completed surveys). For subgroups of responses, the margin of error increases because the sample size for the subgroup is smaller. For subgroups of approximately 100 respondents, the margin of error is plus or minus 10 percentage points.

Notable differences between demographic subgroups included the following:

Respondents with the highest income ($100,000 or more) rated the general Community Characteristics higher than respondents who make less, with the exception of ratings for Denver as a place to raise children and the overall appearance of Denver. Female respondents tended to rate their neighborhood as a place to live, Denver as a place to retire, and the overall appearance of Denver higher than male respondents. The ratings for overall quality of life were highest among the 18-34 year olds, with ratings dropping at each increase in age group.

Respondents over the age of 55 or those who make less than $25,000 per year feel the least amount of overall safety in Denver. These two groups also feel the least safe in Denver's downtown/commercial area during the day. Respondents who make $25,000 or more feel equally safe in their respective neighborhoods; respondents who make less than $25,000 don’t feel as safe in their neighborhood as the other respondents.

Ratings within Governance for the value of services for the taxes paid to Denver, the overall direction that Denver is taking and generally acting in the best interest of the community were highest among respondents who make between $50,000 and $99,999 a year, who are white and who are within 18 and 34 years of age. White respondents and respondents who make between $50,000 and $99,999 a year are among those who are most satisfied with fire services. Respondents who are not white and those who are 55 years of age or older are the least satisfied with animal control.

When rating Recreation and Wellness within Governance, respondents whose yearly income is between $50,000 and $99,999 and white respondents gave the highest ratings of satisfaction for recreation centers or facilities and their recreation programs or classes. White respondents and respondents who make $100,000 or more a year gave the highest satisfaction ratings for City parks and health services.

When rating Denver’s sense of community, respondents who make less than $25,0000 yearly, who are not white, who are female and residents who are 55 years of age or older each provided the highest ratings among other respondents in their subgroup.

The higher the annual household income, the more likely a household was to use the web, mobile application, or e-mail to conduction financial transactions with the city. Those who make less than $25,000 a year and who are not white were least likely to conduct financial transactions via the web or e-mail and were most likely to conduct in-person financial transactions with the city.
