The City of Denver is the largest city and capital of Colorado. Denver is the second most educated city in the US and the second most populous county in Colorado. The downtown district is located approximately 12 miles (19 km) east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the Mile-‐High City because its official elevaGon is exactly one mile or 5,280 feet (1,609.3 m) above sea level. With less water vapor in the air at this alGtude, the sky really is bluer in Colorado. !The state of Colorado is the third fastest growing state in the United States. The city of Denver has spent more than 8 billion in the last decade on new aOracGons including building three new sports stadiums; a new downtown amusement and water park; a new world-‐class aquarium; three new art museums; a new opera house and doubling the size of the Colorado ConvenGon Center. Denver has the second largest performing arts complex in the naGon with 10 theaters seaGng 10,000 people for theatre, symphony, opera and ballet. FUN FACTS !!• The state of Colorado is home to many world-‐class ski resorts. World-‐renowned ski areas such as Vail and Aspen are just a drive away from Denver.
• The 105th meridian west of Greenwich passes through Union StaGon and is the temporal reference for the Mountain Time Zone.
• The sun feels warmer in Denver because you are closer to it. • Denver has 300 days of annual sunshine, more annual hours of sun than San Diego or Miami. • The United States Air Force Academy is located in Colorado Springs (Douglas County). • The largest mineral hot springs pool is located in Glenwood Springs, about 2 and a half hours from Denver.

!Abraham Lincoln High School was founded in 1959 and is named aXer the President Abraham Lincoln. The school is located in the Harvey Park neighborhood on the southwest side of Denver. Abraham Lincoln High School was one of 16 schools naGon-‐wide (one of 4 in Denver) selected by the College Board for inclusion in the EXCELerator School Improvement Model program in 2007-‐2008 school year. EXCELerator includes a college prep curriculum designed to help students focus and succeed in college. The school has a special relaGonship with the University of Denver. Each year DU invites Lincoln freshmen to the campus for tours, workshops, and helps students with planning a college preparatory high school class schedule. In 2005-‐2006, Lincoln sent 11 graduaGng seniors to the University of Denver. Abraham Lincoln High School is also proud of its team sport achievements. The men's soccer team was state runner-‐up in 2009 while the baseball team set a school record with 17 wins in 2010.
