LEARNING MANAGEMENT AND BUSINESS REFORM (LMBR) We are nearing the Go Live date for us moving onto the new system. We are moved onto this system on the 24 th July (Monday Week 2 Term 3). Lisa Wishart and Katrina Taylor have undergone training and along with myself will be overseeing the implementation of the new system into our school. Their expertise in the area of administration has meant that they have been able to learn the new system and to work out how it will work most effectively in our school. Over the period of the end of this term and the start of next term there will be some changes to way things are done within the administration side of the school. A letter has already been sent out which outlined how the financial system will change and the fact that if you have the school’s bank details saved you will need to change these. Further information will be distributed over the coming weeks. HEADSPACE ARTICLES We have included two articles in this week’s newsletter that have been provided to us by Headspace. The two articles are titled Supporting your young person during the holidays and If your friend is not okay… The article Supporting your young person during the holidays focuses on providing information to parents to assist them to support a young person’s mental health and wellbeing over the holidays. It provides 6 ways to support a young person as well as listing some signs for parents to look out for that may suggest that their young person is struggling. The article If your friend is not okay… is aimed at students and provides them with some suggestions on what to do if a friend says that they are not okay. It also provides some ideas of things that can be said or asked to encourage someone to seek help as well as some suggestions of things not to do or say. I would recommend these as a worthwhile read for all members of our school community. LAST NEWSLETTER OF THE TERM This is the last newsletter of what has been another busy term at Deniliquin High School. It has been a term with its obvious difficulties but it has also been a positive and productive term. A large number of students have been involved in sporting endeavours ranging from athletics to cross country (with a number of students making it through to state level in both areas) through to our senior girl’s netball team making it through to the state finals for the second year running. We have also been involved in debating, had students out in the community undertaking work experience and run our Indigenous Parent Morning Tea. Our Duke of Ed students have been involved in their two day practice hike and Year 11 have been involved in Mock Interviews and exams. Next term promises to be another busy term where students will continue in their academic endeavours including our Year 12 students who will be busily preparing for their Trial HSC exams and then for the actual HSC at the start of Term 4. We look forward to a fantastic term of learning and extra-curricular opportunities. NSW GOVERNOR’S VISIT Deniliquin High School Captains Simon Barclay and Millie Joice recently travelled to Sydney accompanied by their Year Advisor Mrs Sue Laing. The trip was a leadership opportunity as the trio were treated to a tour of both the NSW Parliament House and the Governor’s house. In the morning they attended the legislative assembly and the legislative assembly where they listened to a session appealing for a change to the laws surrounding medical marijuana. In the afternoon the Governor his excellency David Hurley and his wife Linda met the students from many districts across NSW.

ENGLISH NEWS It has been a busy few weeks in English, with many of our students engaging in excursions and extracurricular activities. On Thursday 1

st June Year 12 Advanced English

students headed to Melbourne to view Duncan Macmillan and Robert Icke’s adaptation of George Orwell’s ‘1984’. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, engaging with their studied novel in a new context and sophisticated manner.

Debating is in full swing once again and the students in the Year 8 and Year 9 Debating Teams have been working well, constructing arguments in response to a number of relevant topics such as; the purpose of NAPLAN and formal assessments, violence in sport, and compulsory voting. They have competed against a number of schools from the local area, including Barham and Hay War Memorial. Unfortunately, the Deniliquin High teams have not had a win yet but with continued practice, they will hone in on the skills necessary for success in future debates. School holidays are only a week away and once again we would like to remind all students to continue engaging with and reading a range of texts at home. The English and Library staff members are always excited to hear about new books you have read and recommend future possibilities. Melbourne Theatre Company’s Production of Macbeth, directed by Simon Phillips and staring Jai Courtney and Geraldine Hakewell, is running at Southbank Theatre. Year 9 and 10 students will both study Shakespeare this year and we encourage those that can, to go and see this adaptation over the holidays.

YEAR 10 AGRICULTURE VISIT AMAROO FEEDLOT Last month two excursions were run which involved Years 10 Agriculture classes travelling down to the Amaroo Feedlot at Mathoura. The second excursion was on a terrible rainy day so we got a bus tour around the farm and saw all of the different aspects; there were many different breeds of cattle and we saw where they make and produce the feed. The feedlot clients all have special requirements for their cattle. For example one client is a carrot grower and he sends all of his second carrots to the feedlot for his cattle to eat in part of their ration. Warren Barnett, the feedlot owner spoke about how they use horses around the cattle, as it is more calming and the cattle are less stressed. Some cattle are going to the overseas markets and some cattle are used for the local supermarket chains. When we were being toured around the farm in the bus, we got bogged for a whole 35 minutes. Luckily Warren had a tractor and pulled the bus load of children out of the mud. Soon after that we thanked Warren and gave him a small thank you present. As a class we gained so much knowledge and we are much appreciative to Mrs Dunmore for taking us to the feedlot and we are all thankful for Warren, for taking us around his farm and giving up his time out of his day for our class. SCIENCE IN THE SUPPORT CLASS This term for Science we have been looking at Our World, focusing on living and non-living objects. We spent lots of time exploring plants and animals in our local environment, including ones we found both around the school and within the community. Tallying different animal species at the lagoon was a favourite activity and we also learnt about animal and plant life cycles. We completed experiments where we grew plants in different conditions, including in eggshells and with and without direct sunlight. It was great to learn about our living environment.

GIRLS NETBALL A fantastic day of netball by the Deniliquin High School Open Girls team saw them win their first game against Yanco Ag 23-5. With Amy Rodda and Tessa Bulmer accurate in the ring and assisted beautifully by Elly Blake in Wing Attack. The girls then had a tough game ahead with Billabong High School, who the girls had played last year in the final. With Billabong’s strong and experienced defence, our girls composed themselves extremely well with Georgia Richards providing multiple opportunities for turnovers in the mid-court. The girls victorious with a 9-6 win over Billabong. Griffith High School was the next match which saw the girls with another win 15-8. Amy Rodda shot well in a must win against Murray High to finish at the top of the pool. Emma McCallum was quick and effective in Wing Defence as the team pulled off a 19-12 victory. Finishing at the top of the pool, the girls now had to face a determined and eager Finley High School in the final. A huge team effort as Finley proved to be in it to win it with it tied at half time. Defenders Jackie Thorpe and Emily Mildren worked tirelessly in the ring shutting down the Finley shooters whilst Rachel Hare controlled the ball down the court. The defence all over the court was impeccable and everyone played magnificently to win by 3 goals over Finley, 11-8. This now sees the Open Girls off the Wollongong for the CHSSA play offs at the end of August, for the second year in a row. A huge thank you to Georgina Mildren who umpired the girls all day and displayed professionalism on the day. Also to Mrs Hall and Miss Gallagher who coached and supported the team all day. A great achievement girls.

THE MAD SQUAD On Tuesday the 6

th of June, nine MAD Squad

students travelled to Mater Dei Catholic Primary School in Wagga Wagga to take part in the Youth Mental Health Forum for 2017. Throughout the day we took part in “Starting the conversation” by playing games to interact with other schools that attended. One of the games including “Speed Dating” which consisted of talking to someone from a different school for two minutes about a certain topic that was provided by one of the “Burn Bright” representatives. One of the guest speakers was Jarrad Hicknott he talked about his own lived experience of social anxiety and recovery. The second part of the day included a question and answer panel, where panel members answered questions from the audience we could even text a question to them. The panel members were Anne Egan – School Counsellor, Senior Constable Troy Fisher – Youth Liaison Officer, Jarrad Hicknott – a person with a lived experience of mental illness, Kylie Hamblin – Psychologist and Sean Hodgins – Psychiatrist. After lunch we then got together in our schools and brain stormed ideas of a project to raise or smash the stigma associated with Mental Illness. We came up with an idea that is yet to be approved and organised. Thank you to Tracey Page, Renee Beehag and Miss Gallagher for coming with us and making our attendance possible.

CAREERS NEWS Tiarna’s visit to NIDA

My work experience at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney was a trip of a lifetime. I was luckily accepted into their work experience program after completing a lengthy application process. Whilst there, I was participating in a vast range of dramatic centred classes such as pure acting, voice, movement, dance, physical theatre and much more. At NIDA, only 24 students out of around 2000 are accepted into the actual acting program, and the course goes for three years. I spent my time with mainly the first years and two other work experience students where we were taught by numerous world-renowned teachers and professional actors. I was able to see famous faces such as Judy Davis and Di Smith walking around the campus as they are very involved in the NIDA community. During my time there, there were 4 performances being rehearsed and created in some of the 6 theatres NIDA has to offer, and we were able to sit on in some of the rehearsals and overlook the costume designs and props being built. We also spent time with some musical theatre students and even sat in on a class being taken by a third year class. Many famous Australian actors have studied at NIDA including Cate Blanchett, Mel Gibson, Luke Hemsworth, Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why and many more. Overall, the experience was eye-opening and amazing; I learned so much and met so many aspiring actors and amazing people. YEAR 11 MOCK INTERVIEWS The Mock Interviews were a roaring success yet again, thanks to the wonderful support of our generous community. We had over 70 employers from all facets of the work force who gave up their time to interview our Year 11 students, who all benefited greatly from the experience. Students are to be congratulated on the manner in which they conducted themselves. They were nervous but they performed brilliantly to leave a positive impression on our wonderful panellists. Heartfelt thanks to all who participated to make this another wonderful learning opportunity for our students.

SUBJECTS FOR NEXT YEAR … HOW TO DECIDE? Where to Start? For students in Year 10, the next few months usually bring some important decisions about subjects for Year 11. Have you started thinking about what you might want to do/study? Also, middle school students may be selecting electives to study. What things should be considered? Things to Consider What am I best at? Think about the subjects you excel in – with content that inspires you, and learning experiences you enjoy. You may like to continue with them – or select others that have similar appeal. What do my teachers think? Your teachers know your strengths and aptitudes in their subjects. Seek their help! It is important for you to select subjects where you will find success. If you need information about particular subjects, seek out teachers of that subject to discuss what the expectations are. Also, teachers know your capacities, and can help you discern whether you will be able to manage particular subjects. What about courses I might want to do in the future? The UAC Year 10 Guide is available on the UAC website. It gives comprehensive information about choosing subjects, study pathways and school subjects that are prerequisites for courses after Year 12. This is an invaluable guide for current middle-school and Year 10 students. Printed copies will be distributed to schools shortly, and the online version can be found at the following link: UAC Year 10 Guide - http://www.uac.edu.au/documents/publications/year10-booklet-20.pdf
