The Demons kicked four unanswered final quarter goals to run away with a 10.14 (74) to 8.8 (56) victory. South had momentum for most of the match and took a 10-point lead into the final break, but simply ran out of gas. The Kangaroos, minus key players Toshie Kunoth and Dustin Briscoe, jumped the Demons to lead by three points at the first change. But, it was a four goals to one third quarter which sparked the game into the Kangaroos’ favour. The defending premiers, who were missing Bradley Turner and lost Nathan Mutch to a calf injury in the opening minutes, rose to the challenge and peppered the goals during the final 30 min- utes. Jai Pumphrey was every- where for the Demons, while Kangaroos captain Charlie Maher again led from the front, with Caleb Hart a pillar in defence and up forward. Pioneer gained a mental edge against Rovers with a 16-point win at Albrecht Oval on Sunday. The Eagles came from one point behind at three quarter time to record a 14.9 (93) to 12.5 (77) win. Both sides will meet again in this week’s qualiyfing final. Ltyentye Apurte finished their 2012 season on a high, defeating finals-bound Anmatjere by five points on Sunday at Traeger Park. The Saints held a two-goal lead at quarter time and never gave up thier advantage, win- ning 12.7 (79) to 10.14 (74). Hodgins’s title DRAG RACING DAN Hodgins has taken out the Top Comp at the Alice Springs Titles on the weekend. Hodgins was too good for Mark Probst and won with a better reaction time. Lathan McNicholl took out the Junior Dragster with a 16.20 dial-in, to defeat Lachlan Cole. Johnson Bernie won the Street Car event with a 14.10 dial- in, defeating Ashley Turnbull. In Street Bike, Darren Savage took the honours against Dave McKenna. Sean Baney won the Super Street com- petition with an 11.10 dial-in, to defeat Glenis Wilkins. Ray Baney won the Super Sedan section, with a dial-in time of 11.29, defeating Lenny Cole. Modified Elimin- ator champion went to Gavin Chisnell, who was too good for Nicki Bowen. Best Reaction Time went to Lathan McNicholl with 0.002, while the Best Burnout was per- formed by Mick Pfitzner, Best Pres- ented was Gavin Chisnell and the Most Outstanding Racer was Malachi McMurtrie. Leaders show strength NETBALL Steve Menzies Lasseters Seasons’ Ra Schwalger looks to find a teammate Picture: MICHAEL POTTS THE top three sides showed the clear differ- ence in class in the McDonald’s Alice Springs Netball Associ- ation A-grade games at the Pat Gallagher Centre on Saturday. Wests’ Gillen Club defeated Neata Glass Giants 51-29 in the closest game of the day. There were only 11 goals the difference at the final change but a near-perfect shooting term by Kathline Carlile, with support from Dani Wenske, when Wests goaled 86 per cent of their shots, made sure the points were safe. Better shooting was the story of the game as Wests’ led 12-5 at quar- ter time despite having fewer shorts than Giants for the period. Giants fought back and performed better in the second and third quarters, winning the penultimate term, but Wests’ always held the edge even though Jess Johannsen was rested for the second half. Kathleen Carlile, after playing the first half at wing attack and the third term at goal attack, was moved to goal shooter for the fin- al term. And shoot goals she did — 12 of them at 92 per cent as Wests’ ran away with the game. Sundowners Gapview scored 30 goals or more against competition leader Federal Trusty Glass for the fourth time this season. But they could not prevent Federal from running away with the biggest win of the day — 69-33. Federal, with Tegan Hatzimihail in close to her best dominating form scoring 14 goals at 93 per cent, took control from the first whistle and led 20-7 at quarter time. Joanna Sheridan and Crystal Dixon took it in turns, swapping at half time, to partner Hatzimihail and it made little difference who was in the circle as the goals kept mount- ing up. Although it was an- other big loss by Sun- downers, they did enough to stay ahead of Giants by 3.5 per cent, with two games left in the season, in the battle for the wooden spoon. Reigning premier Memo Rovers did enough to overcome the Lasseters Seasons op- position and the cold, as the temperature dropped from the day’s high of 18.1C at 3.11pm towards the overnight single digit. They won 58-29 in a game where neither played to their poten- tial. Seasons, already without key players Mai Segi and Sandy Warner, suffered a further blow on the eve of the game when Codie Ford injured her back and could not play. But the side battled with what they had and, at times, again showed the ability to compete against the best. Rovers showed their class and, despite Katie Pickett uncharacterist- ically missing her first six shots, took early control and, once Pickett regained her usual accuracy, Rovers steamed ahead. The Rovers defence of Carlie Martin and Geogia Brunsdon, with centre court support from Nicole Ashworth and Shannan Rosier, proved a formidable barrier cutting off many of Seasons at- tacking moves. This was especially so in the second quarter, when Seasons had only seven shots for four goals, so despite the de- fence of Raewyn Beale and Loata Quami keep- ing Rovers to 12 goals the game had slipped away. A highlight of the game was when Rovers wing attack Kelsey Rodda passed the ball between the legs of Seasons defender Raewyn Beale to set Jemma Pringle up to score the first goal of the final term.
