CORBIN Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times Team depth throughout, team speed and a number of returning veterans, who experienced a wild and crazy ride that ended at the Group 4 cham- pionship game last year, may make it a very exciting season for this year’s Westfield High School baseball team. “We got, what I believe, is a very deep team. If one guy goes down, we have enough people that we will have absolutely no problem filling in. They got a lot of experience last year going to the county finals and the state finals, playing in some big situations. I think this team has the potential to be pretty, pretty strong,” Blue Devil Head Coach Bob Brewster said. The Blue Devils, who appeared mediocre in the first half of the sea- son, caught fire at the right time to win the sectional title and the Group 4 semifinal game before falling to the No. 2 Eastern Vikings, 8-1, in the NJSIAA Group 4 Championship game. Additionally a number of the JVs, who won the county tournament and finished 20-3, will help fill any vacancies and add to a nine-strong pitching staff. “We are very deep with our pitch- ing staff. We got nine, four lefty pitch- ers and five righty pitchers. The big thing is making sure we get enough innings for all of them. As it is now, our pitchers give us five good in- nings, I have enough confidence with the guys coming in to get the final two innings,” Coach Brewster said. Senior co-captain Brad DeMartino is the Blue Devils’ mound ace. “He’ s becoming a student of the game. He’s understanding what to do on the mound. His control is improv- ing all the time. I have a lot of confi- dence with him on the mound,” Coach Brewster said. Seniors Brad Norris, Mike Androconis, Anthony Perconte and Luke Iorio, and juniors Andrew Malacrea, Ben Herbster, Sean Elliott and Jack Bunting will all get the opportunity to scuff their cleats on the mound, and they all will have the luxury of having senior co-captain/ catcher Mike Ionta behind the plate. “That helps tremendously. Our kids love throwing to him, because they know nothing is going to get by him,” Coach Brewster said. Defensively, Androconis, senior Calvin Robertshaw and Herbster will play first base. Senior co-captain Tyler Bowman and junior Matt Catanzaro will play second, while senior Matt Storcks and junior Danny DoCampo will play short. CORBIN Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times More is expected this year from the Westfield High School softball team that features a senior heavy squad that includes five four-year starters. Last year, the Lady Blue Devils, who finished 20-7 and won their con- ference, achieved their major goal of capturing the Union County Tourna- ment (UCT) championship, and they did it with emphasis by toppling the two-time defending champion Gov- ernor Livingston Highlanders, 15-1, in five innings. Unfortunately, their run in the sectional tournament was cut short with a 3-1 loss to North Hunterdon. “We are definitely looking to de- fend our county title. We also want to play deeper into the state tourna- ment. It’s important that we play bet- ter in our independent games than we did last year,” Blue Devil Head Coach Caitlin MacDonald said. Last year, Crissy Ferraro, Cali Chambliss and Julia Criscuolo, all now seniors, were the Blue Devils’ 1- 2-3 punch in the batting order, and that same lineup beginning is ex- pected this year. “We are really still working on figuring out our lineup, so I’m not positive, but those look like the top three spots in the lineup right now,” Coach MacDonald said. As the leadoff hitter, Ferraro with her fleet of foot and slap-shot hitting style earned her a .424 (36-for-85) batting average (BA), 15 walks and 13 stolen bases in as many attempts. Her speed was also an asset while she was covering centerfield. Chambliss batted second in the lineup and had a .432 BA (41-for-95) and was the team’s power hitter with 11 doubles, four triples and four home runs. She led the team with 34 RBI and 36 runs scored. Defensively, she ruled the infield with her intensity at shortstop. Julia Criscuolo led the team with a .465 BA (47-for-101) and produced key RBI with Ferraro and Chambliss on base.
