GEN-SETS

For a 100KW (Gross power) engine, only around 35% of the fuel energygets converted to electrical energy.

The balance is thermal loss and wasteheat.

Capture this waste heat and you notonly increase the gensets efficiency(which is invariably by a substantialamount), but you also provide yourcustomers with free heat and hot water. You've also turned your genset intosomething that is very desirable - acombined heat and power (CHP) system. The means by which this is done is quitesimple - heat exchangers.

One of the companies at the forefront ofthis 'genset revolution' is EJ Bowman, thespecialist UK manufacturer of heatexchangers for power generation.

“We have definitely noticed a shift inattitude,” EJ Bowman's Sales Manager,Jamie Pratt, tells WIP. “With fuel pricesrising again, diesel powered gensetmanufacturers are looking to CHP as away to offer a premium product, withbetter margins and provide customerswith the ultimate tangible benefit - freeheat and hot water.”

To illustrate just how tangible thatbenefit is, Bowman has developed the

following illustration. A typical 100kwdiesel engine will generate around 35kwof electrical energy, giving an averageefficiency of around 35%.

Recovering the heat lost from theexhaust system and converting it to hotwater provides another 40kw of energy, increasing the efficiency to 75%.

When waste heat from the coolingsystem is recovered, this is increased by afurther 10kw, increasing the overallefficiency to 85%.

"It's possible to achieve an engineefficiency level of up to 92% by includingoil, fuel and charge air coolers, puttingthe overall efficiency of a genset on a parwith the latest condensing heatingboilers,” says Jamie.

“The fact that the gen-set is providingelectricity, heating and hot water at sucha high efficiency, makes it an increasinglyattractive proposition for independentpower applications,” he explains.

EJ Bowman has developed one of themost comprehensive ranges of heatexchangers for gensets and, using theirproducts, up to 60% of all heat lost fromthe engine can be reclaimed andconverted into energy.

Bowman's standard range comprises heatexchangers for genset engines withpower ratings from 16KW to 1MW

“Over the past few years, thetrend towards smaller, morecompact engine powered gensetshas accelerated and these units arebecoming increasingly important forindependent power generation,”reports Jamie Pratt. “With that inmind, developing our new '2-25'and 2-32 compact unit was alogical extension to our range ofheat exchangers.”

Product quality is at the heart of EJBowman's success and this can be seen inboth the materials used and themanufacturing processes employed.

“We use a fully-welded, all stainless-steel construction on all our exhaust gasunits, as this provides the level ofdurability needed to handle the extremetemperatures found in modern exhaustgas systems,” concludes Jamie.

“We don't compromise either - the samestandards and specifications apply to allour units, from the largest to thesmallest.”
