Stack/system problem solving with membranewith membrane
16 juni 2010 PowerCell Sweden AB Confidential Information 32
Why solve a problem with membrane?
By choosing different membrane types
• system control might be easier and more stable
• more stable performance at a larger variety of operating parameters
• reduce number of system components
16 juni 2010 PowerCell Sweden AB Confidential Information 33
What can be done and what is the effect
Things to manipulate:
Ionomer
• increase conductivity (higher power density, more cost competitive)
• increased H2O2 resistance (increased life time)
• better performance at dry condition operation (reduce system complexity)
• reduced H -crossover (increased life time) • reduced H2-crossover (increased life time)
• resistance to higher temperature (decrease system cost)
Reinforcement
• reduces H2-crossover (increased life time)
• increased stability towards shrinking and swelling (increased mechanical
stability)
16 juni 2010 PowerCell Sweden AB Confidential Information 34
What can be done and what is the effect
Things to manipulate:
Thickness
• thin gives improved performance (higher power density and better
performance at dryer condition)
• thicker decreases crossover rate and increases lifetime (regular good for
stationary applications where current density is low)stationary applications where current density is low)
Additive
• defense against H2O2 , i.e. increased chemical stability (increase life time)
