Ah, Pierre, South Dakota, in the spring! The very mention of this brings memories of courtship and kisses. My husband called Pierre home during our college years. Oahe Dam is a lovely sight on starlit nights. You, however, may think first of Pierre as our state capital city, and I would ask, how long has it been since you have experienced it? Our Alpha Pi State Convention will give you the chance for a complete update. Come in time for the preregistration tour and stay through the Presidents’ Ban-quet that begins with out going chapter presidents handing over flags to new biennium presidents. Plan to lodge at Kings Inn to help Beta chapter manage the expenses of the meeting rooms we will use there. See how this chapter has worked to provide us a full convention experience at a very reasonable price. CEU credit will again be available for attending our convention. I call your attention to the society workshops on the schedule. They are important. One is a DKG update by our International Guest Maria Vera Palerm-Ferri (Mury) including, no doubt, the newly proposed International Constitution, Saturday at 11:45 -12:30 a.m. This is our chance to discover what change will result from the new constitution to be voted on at the society convention in Spo-kane in July. I would suggest that each chapter ask someone with an interest to study the copy of the new constitution mailed out to all members in March and be ready to ask any questions that your chapter has. The other is the workshop from 10:15 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, which will be a panel organized by our Leadership Committee to answer questions you have. This is meant to be especially helpful to new chapter presidents. If your new president cannot attend convention, please plan to have someone at this session in her place prepared to ask questions and to take notes for her. Materi-als mailed from International meant for each chapter will be handed out at this gathering. Some-one needs to pick these up for each chapter. The morning tour scheduled during the time of these workshops is repeated in the afternoon so that no one need miss out, just schedule accordingly. Thank you, now, to all who do so. I hope to provide updated Alpha Pi State Contact Information Sheets for each chapter and each state officer. Please send me address, phone and e-mail information for a new chapter president so that these sheets are accurate. If you are a state committee chair and have a change in your contact information, please send me that information. The new sheets will be blue, meaning the yellow ones used now will no longer be current. Lastly, I am feeling the inadequacy of this one-way communication. If you, as one of our always appreciated society members, have a comment or question for me, please call or e-mail at any-time. I promise I will be attentive to your concern about any topic. Alpha Pi-State
From our 2010 International Guest My name is Marìa Vera, but almost everyone knows me as Mury. I have been a member of DKG Beta State Jalisco, Chapter Alpha since 1989. Since then I have had several positions at a chapter and state level. Through International I have been part of the Travel and Study committee (no longer exists), I have been an ISF speaker twice, and now International Latin American Representative and part of the ISF committee. I am still working at a high school (in the mornings) and in the afternoon/evening at the Uni-versity of Guadlajara, coordinating a programme for researchers and teachers exchange with the UE. I have two sons one in Pasadena, Ca. and the other in Barcelona. Both of them have a PhD and Cesar, the oldest, is a diabetes researcher for Medtronics, and Juan a free-lance for the UE for environmental politics and assessment. I like to travel, read, animals, all that has to do with nature. I also like to cook and bake. I am very happy and glad to be part of DKG, as it has allowed me to meet teachers from the 17 countries, have new lovely friends and had the opportunity to attend the Golden Gift Seminar in 2001.

Epsilon: Epsilon Chapter recently initiated two
new members - Ann Paradise and Colleen
Waiflien. One of the most common comments
we hear from all our initiates is "I didn't realize I
would know so many people!" Programs have
included a presidential visit from LaRee, a legis-
lative discussion by the Aberdeen school super-
intendent Gary Harms, a musical extravaganza
by Mary Beth Kelly (piano) and Gregg Magera
(violin) and a basket auction. Our basket auc-
tion proceeds will be going to help fund several
area programs such as Camp Dreammakers, His-
tory Day, Future Problem Solvers and DKG Hai-
tian members. We were able to give our NSU
Scholarship Fund $2,600 for future teachers following our involvement with
the Aberdeen Area University Women's organization. As this year comes to
a close we are looking at installation of officers and preparing for the new
year. Hope to see you all at convention!

Mu: Rhonda Morse gave an update on our Building a School in South Sudan project. As we work together to help educate the girls of South Sudan knowing of all the chal-lenges that people face in third world countries, it has brought our group closer to-gether. We will continue our support with a gigantic rummage sale in April. In March our speaker will talk about the young women in Thailand and the Be Free Organiza-tion which is committed to ending human slavery, trafficking and exploitation, locally and globally. Check out the website www.befree58.org. We will end the year on a lighter note; our dinner meeting in April will feature “Life Lessons Learned in the Gar-den”. Kappa: The President's Day theme was carried out in the decorations and
table favors at the February meeting of Kappa chapter. Diane Kludt, a mem-
ber of the hostess committee, showed how she made the coasters that
were given to each member in attendance. Members discussed educational
issues that are before the state legislature for action. The next meeting will
be in April and will focus on World Fellowship. Members are asked to bring
along foreign exchange students that are attending area schools. A collec-
tion will be taken to send to World Fellowship with concentration being on
Haiti and Chile where schools have been devastated by earthquakes.

Marilyn A. Lee
Mu Chapter, Charter Member
1965-2010
Marilyn A. Lee, age 77, died January 9th at Sanford
USD Medical Center. Her Funeral Service will be at 7:00
pm on Friday, January 15th at First Baptist Church. Visitation with family pre-
sent will be from 5-7pm on Friday also at First Baptist Church. A second funeral
service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday at the Altamont Baptist Church in
rural Harlan, Iowa.
Marilyn was born to Virgil and Alma (Klindt) on November 17, 1932 in Harlan,
Iowa. She attended and graduated from Harlan High School. She then attended
Sioux Falls College, where she graduated with her B.A. in 1959. Marilyn later
continued her education and graduated with her Master's Degree from the Uni-
versity of South Dakota in 1969. She was employed for thirty-six years with the
Sioux Falls School District and retired in 1995. She began her teaching career
with 6th grade at Hawthorne Elementary and then moved to Lowell Elementary,
teaching 6th and then 5th grade.
Marilyn was very involved with First Baptist Church. She was also a member of
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Church Choir, International Reading
Association and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved sewing, reading, knit-
ting, quilting, traveling for pleasure and mission trips, baking and making jams
for relatives and friends.
Marilyn is survived by her brother John (Sherrie) Lee of Avoca, IA; nieces and
nephews: Kathren Messenger of Walnut, IA; Mark (Kathy) Lee and Steven Lee
of Ellendale, MN, Dennis (Jeri) Messenger of West Des Moines, IA, Judy (John)
Pixley of Logan, IA, Ron Lee, Jeff Lee and Rhonda (Rodney) Knudson all of
Harlan, IA; great nieces and nephews: Holly (Jasin) Gallagher of West Des
Moines, IA, Derek and Katie Lee of Ellendale, MN, Jared and Joel Pixley of
Logan, IA and Tara, Ethan, and Kyle Knudson of Harlan, IA; sister-in-law, Anna
Mae Lee of Ellendale, MN; brother-in-law, Jack Messenger of Avoca, IA and
several cousins, church family and several friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Alvin Lee; sister, Velma
Messenger and great nephews, Aaron Messenger and Mathew Lee. Memorials
preferred to First Baptist Church or Altamont Baptist Church in Harlan, IA.

Alpha Pi State State Finance Committee January 30, 2010 9:30 a.m.
Members Present: Margaret Lyons, Ruth Ann Anderson, Janet Shelver, State Treasurer, Carol King, State Secretary. President LeeRee Mayes, by phone contact. The meeting was called to order by Chair, Margaret Lyons. Janet reported that the chapters did a great job of turning in their dues in this year. State dues were paid to International in a timely manner. Banking Update: Bank First dissolved and was changed to First Dakota. The consequence is that there were some account closures and transfers necessary. We now have some investments at First Dacotah and a Checking account at Wells Fargo. We have some good CDs at Dacotah Bank receiving 5% interest through 2014, which fund Elderhostel and Leadership funds. Janet tried to do electronic banking and has reverted to receiving a printed copy of bank transactions monthly.

Present Financial Status $4,388.72 is available in the Wells Fargo Checking Account to complete the 2009-2010 year. The board reviewed the funds and availability and determined how to meet the financial needs through the current fiscal year.
Considerations for Executive Board review Marilyn Lee Award, funded from Scholarship funds: Consider expansion of the Marilyn Lee Award from one $50.00 award to awarding $50.00 to all 1st tune attendees to either a regional or international convention/conference. (instead of providing only one $50.00 award.) CEU Credit :Suggest the collection of a small fee ($3 or $4) for CEU be accessed at the state convention.
Developed the 2010-2011 proposed budget: The committee prepared the proposed budget. Board suggestions and recommendations: Suggest that expenses could be cut on printed materials for the convention. One way would be to provide one printed pro-gram/report, condensing items to be printed. Eliminate history from the program and focus on the immediate convention, cut costs on binding cover and by using staples or brads. Suggest that the awards for Woman in Art and Scrapbook be changed to Voter’s choice, eliminating the need for judging and multiple awards and focus on enjoyment and participation. This would help cut costs. Suggest that the schedule for the convention allow extra time to view exhibits. Alpha Pi State History: The committee discussed a request by Marge Bohn for statistics for the Alpha Pi State 2000-2011 His-tory. The committee would like to be involved. Honorarium: Considered a request for a monetary gift to the outgoing International President, to express appreciation for her leadership and service. Recommendation by the finance committee that $25.00 should be sent to International Headquarters as an Honorarium for the outgoing President, Dr. Carolyn Rants along with a note of appreciation for her accomplishments and achievements. A few items I found interesting... NEW CREDIT CARD RULES What has changed.: 1. The credit card company cannot change the interest rate on existing balances. (Some exceptions to this.) 2. The credit card company cannot change the interest rate on new accounts for 12 months. 3. The credit card company may not charge a fee if you go over your credit limit. 4. If balances on a credit card are subject to different interest rates, the company is required to apply any payment to the balance with the highest interest rate. 5. Your statement must be mailed or delivered at least 21 days before payment is due 6. Payment due dates must be the same every month, and if the due date falls on a weekend, the payment must be credited on the NEXT business day. 7. The credit card company can no longer use a customer’s avg. daily balance over 2 months to calculate in-terest. 8. The credit card company is required to give at least 45 days notice before changing annual or cash ad-vance fees. 9. Individuals under the age of 21 must have a cosigner in order to get a credit card. (Parents of college stu-dents rejoice!) What has not changed.: 1. There is no limit on the amount of interest which a credit card company can charge. 2. The interest rate on future purchases can change. 3. The credit card company CAN CHARGE AN INACTIVITY FEE as well as annual fees. The inactivity fee is probably going to be used by companies more often.
