Delroy’s Mirrikie breaks

31-year-old 400m record

A 31-year-old school record for the 400 metres has been

broken at this year’s Dubbo College Delroy Campus Athletics

carnival, and the original record-holder could not be happier.

Former Delroy High School student athlete Colleen Bragg set the

record of 1:15:00 in her Year 7 athletics carnival in 1984, not

realising at the time the record would remain hers for the next

31 years.

The Moree-based PDHPE teacher, 43, was overcome with

emotion when she heard the news and passed on her best wishes

to the new record-holder, 12-year-old Mirrikie Shaw, who set a

new time of 1:13:38.

“When I was at Delroy I had to work really hard to beat the

Aboriginal girls because they were so naturally talented, so I am

not surprised that Mirrikie is Aboriginal and has broken the

record,” she said.

“I was a really keen runner and I used to really look forward to

the athletics carnival, which was always held at Victoria Park

number one oval”, Colleen said.

“I would always run in bare feet on the grass track and I took part

in every running event from the 100 metres to the 1,500, and in

every throwing and jumping event from Year 7 to Year 12.

“I was very competitive in those days.

“We lived out of town on the Narromine Road and runn

ing and cycling were my favourite pastimes, but I also played basketball and netball.”

Colleen who married her partner Alfred Priestley, a Gomeroi Aboriginal man from Moree, three years ago, now has two

young sons who also excel in athletics.

“My seven-year-old is very fast and always likes me to compete with him in the parents’ race at the sports carnival,” she

said, “while my six-year-old is more talented in gymnastics.”

For current Delroy Campus student Mirrikie, breaking the record set three decades ago brought a gentle smile to her face.

The youngest child of six, including five older brothers, doesn’t practice a great deal and has a natural running ability.

“I haven’t tried the 1,500 but I do compete in everything from the 100 metres to the 800, she said.

“I always wear joggers when I run and I would say the new track at the Barden Park facility has helped me pick up a bit of

speed.

“I also play netball, basketball

and touch football and I come

from a very sports-oriented

family. My older brothers are all

involved in sport, my mum was a

swimmer and horse-rider and my

dad was good at athletics and

rugby league.”

Mirrikie has received a

scholarship to boarding school in

Sydney next year where she plans

to continue her sporting endeav-

ours.

Colleen said she wished Mirrikie

good luck for the future and urged

her not to give up on her athletics. Colleen Bragg Delroy High School

Dubbo College Delroy Campus heavy

metal fan, 14-year-old David Woods,

will join a throng of voices making up

this year’s Moorambilla Outback Choir.

Together with his brother Johnathan, 12

years, and sister 10-year-old Jessica, both

students at North Dubbo primary school,

David successfully auditioned for

Moorambilla last term.

As part of the choir, David will join up to

200 students from rural areas of the State

to access quality and often life-changing

opportunities not usually available in

regional areas.

The Moorambilla program, the brain-

child of former Coonamble resident

Michelle Leonard, has been operating

now for 10 years and encompasses

30 regional towns and more than 55 schools. As many as 12,000 students have taken part in the program, including talented

Dubbo College students Nathan Bryon, who is now spending time at the Washington State Opera, and soprano Billie Palin.

David and his brother and sister will attend special camps including individual girls’ and boys’ residency camps in August,

as well as a week of residency in Baradine in September, culminating in a Proms Concerts at the Baradine Memorial Hall

and a gala concert at the Dubbo Theatre on September 19. David is very excited about the opportunity and looking forward

to meeting other students interested in music. “My mum, Elizabeth, sings a lot at home so I suppose we have all picked it up

from her,” he said. “As well as singing, I also play the trumpet and piano at school, but I really like heavy metal bands like

Metallica.”

Delroy Campus music teacher Katie Bell-Lange said students like David and his siblings require a strong sense of rhythm to

participate in the program. “Access to Moorambilla is based on musical ability so to be involved students need to have raw

talent,” she said. “We are really proud of David’s achievement and he will now have amazing opportunities to develop his

talent by working with top class composers and musicians.”

FROM DUBBO TO DARWIN I had the privilege to represent Dubbo College at a meeting

with representatives of the Northern Territory Government

to inform them about the Aboriginal Girls Circle that Delroy

Campus has been running for the last 6 years. Twenty

representatives from various areas of Government heard from

Dr Sue Roffey, the instigator of the program,

Dr Brenda Dobia, head of the research team that evaluated

the pilot of the Aboriginal Girls Circle program in Dubbo,

Madelene McGrath, representing NAPCAN, the organisation

that supported the implementation of the program at Delroy

and myself, the coordinator of the program in the school.

Many questions were asked of us and answered thoroughly

with positive feedback about how successful the program

seemed to be. The timeframe for our presentation was from

10.am until 11.30am on Wednesday 10th June, however,

12.20pm saw the wrapping up of the conversations. Overall a

very positive experience and we look forward to the Northern

Territory implementing the Aboriginal Girls Circle across

their communities.

In addition to being part of a successful presentation, I also

had the privilege of meeting Evonne Goolagong Cawley at

the Qantas Lounge in the Darwin airport. As a tennis player

this was an absolute thrill.

Delroy Art Club: Walking amongst the trees in the car park today the Art Club Drawing students collected the first of their inspirations for a

larger work. We took the leaf litter back to the room to draw and the students took their time rendering the details. These

will lead to the making of lino prints and combining their works into a larger composition. The sculptures being created

on Mondays are taking shape, taking up a lot more room. Soon there will be colour and details, it is very exciting. I have

been measuring the space in the Music room where some of the works will be finding their home.

Music News… Year 7 Instrument Making

Year 7 have been busy making home-made instruments using all different kinds

of materials. Some students had help from Mr Martin in TAS or from parents/

carers. They were marked based on their initial ideas, the sounds quality and

how they made it. Students then had to perform/demonstrate their instrument.

Year 7 and Year 8 Artmaking Year 7 – Most, if not all students have begun using clay to build their mythical beast they have designed in their visual arts

diary. Some students may wish to bring gloves in if they are not happy with getting their hands dirty using the clay.

Students may also wish to bring in an old oversized t-shirt or apron to help avoid dirtying their uniforms.

Year 8 – Students have been busy designing a sculptural piece that signifies the human form and an ‘issue’ that is relevant

to themselves and the world. Some issues students have chosen to express include war, gender, drug use and science.

Students are now busy sculpting their design using clay and/or plaster.

Drawing Class (Interest Group) – We have been exploring the art of sketching. We had a few students model in the

centre of the classroom for 10 minutes at a time whilst the remainder of the class quickly sketched their position. There is a

great deal of talent in this class, I am eager to see what their capabilities truly are. From Mrs McConnell

Year 9/10 Industrial Technology Engineering Elective It has been very rewarding watching both the Year 9 and Year 10 Engineering students design and construct a bridge that

will be put ‘under the pump’ when weights are added to see just how much weight their bridge can bare. Students have been

working in small teams of 3 or 4 to construct their bridges in the practical rooms. The students will be publicly testing the

weight bearing of their bridges to their fellow colleagues during a Friday recess. The bridge which withstands the greatest

weight will win a small prize for their efforts.

Once this assessment has been completed, students will begin working on designing and building an F1 race car using Balsa

Wood. It is part of a state wide competition held every year where school groups compete for the fastest F1 race car design.

We have already begun researching and had a quick play with some plasticine on making a F1 race car and constructing our

very own race track.

We look forward to seeing what these students can create.

Country Cup League Report Delroy Campus recently competed in the Country Cup divisional day

held in Dubbo in the U/13 and U15 division. A big thanks to Mr Wade

(U/15) and Mr Boon (U/13) for taking the teams on the day.

Both teams were great ambassadors for the school, displaying good

sportsmanship and doing their best in all games played.

In the U/13’s the team started the day with a strong 10-4 win over

Mudgee High. In the next game the team were defeated by Wellington

High 14-0. In their final game of the day the team went down to

St Johns College 26-10. Throughout the day Callum Dowling was the

standout for the team tackling everything that moved and setting up our

attack into numerous try scoring opportunities. Prop Billy Bateup and

Captain Quincy Ross also played strongly on the day.

In the under 15’s the team played matches against Wellington High and

Narromine High. In both matches the team had some great passages of

play, particularly in attack. Randall Dowling and Tim Boney were the

stand outs for the team on the day. While “pint sized” Harry Ritchie was

a crowd favourite with his fearless play.

College Sport-Girls Hockey Dubbo College has had a very strong year in Western Area Hockey

with the team finishing as Western area runners up. Delroy was well

represented in the team with Kenzie Macfarlane (Year 7), Chloe

Goodee (Year 8), Maddi Cafe (Year 9) and Lilli Campbell (Year 8)

all important members of the team. Kenzie was a leading striker,

Chloe a speedy winger, Maddi a solid defender and Lilli the all

important goalkeeper. Earlier in the year Lilli was selected as a

shadow player for the open Western Area Girls representative team.

After having a bye, defeating Gilgandra High and Wellington High

the team took on Orange High in the final. The Orange High was a

very talented team with several state representatives. Unfortunately

Orange High despite the best efforts of Dubbo College won the game

5-1 to progress to the state finals.

All girls were commended on their sportsmanship and the way they

represented Dubbo College by coach Alice Maher (South Campus).

Given the girls’ ages we look forward to their continued success in

hockey for Dubbo College.

On Thursday 28th May, Year 10 attended the program LOVE BITES. This program is based around domestic violence and

assult. Students participated in classroom workshops until lunch facilitated by NSW health, Child health, NSW Domestic

Violence, and NSW Police. Students were very engaged in the activities which made them more aware of domestic violence

issues within the community and where help is available.

The afternoon session involved practical sessions of mosaic art, painting, gym activities and traditional Aboriginal games.

Students choose an activity that they would use for relaxation time after stressful events occurred. All students filled out an

evaluation and all students stated they found the sessions interesting and engaging. They gained a better understanding of all

issues and gained excellent resources if they (or friends) ever need advice or help. A very big thank you to Krystal Pilon

from NSW Health for the time and effort she gave Delroy for running the course. It was very much appreciated by all staff

and students.
